I don't even understand why folks are shocked by that. It totally seems like something Ronda would do.

Dana White was on both ESPN SportsCenter and Colin Cowherd’s show on Fox Sports One Thursday promoting Saturday’s UFC 199, and also updated the status of Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey while he was…

                  Re: OS MMA Random Thread

There is a conversation in the UFC 199 thread regarding championship reigns, or lack thereof. It kind of got me thinking.

I feel like due to the nature of MMA it's kind of different when you look to evaluate a champions legacy. For me personally me, I don't need a decade of dominance to consider someone a great champion or an all-time great in general. On the flip side of that though. I have a hard time considering a newly crowned champ a "legit champion" right off the bat. You have situations like Bisping, Stipe, and Tate who all wouldn't surprise me one bit if they don't defend their title once. Bisping especially, he probably won't be the favorite against anyone he's matched with next. Stipe to a lesser extent. I favor him against most of the top 10. There are 3 ladies in the top 10 I would favor over Miesha. But I guess that's just MMA.

When I look to evaluate a champions legacy, here is how I look at it:

                  Newly crowned: Probationary champion
                  One title defense: real champion
Two title defenses: a "good champion"
Three or Four defenses: a "great champion"
Five or more defenses: an all-time great/legend/hall of fame status

I'd be curious to look at the stats and see how many fighters have 5 or more title defenses. I feel like guys like Anderson, GSP, and Jones were the exceptions.

How do you look at it when you evaluate a championship legacy?

                    Re: OS MMA Random Thread

I think your guidelines are a pretty decent base. In terms of which runs were the most impressive to me, I'd rank the top dogs as follows:

                    Jones
                    Silva
                    GSP
                    Rousey
                    Mighty Mouse
                    Aldo
                    Hughes

Outside of that, I can't really think of anyone else who deserves to be in the discussion of great champions. That's not a knock on anyone who else who has been a champion because it's hard to stay on top in this sport, but that's just how it's panned out.

I listened to Ariel's words today, twice, from beginning to end. I really feel for the guy. I posted a little fanpost over on that site. He's a good guy, I can really feel where he is coming from.
