Re: OS MMA Random Thread
Yea I'm surprised that people didn't think that Ronda was getting the title shot right when she came back. I mean she's the best draw in women's mma history. She is the main reason that the UFC first got into women's mma. And she is easily the most dominant fighter in that division. She went what 3 straight years holding that title before the loss to Holm? And dominated every woman she came up against before Holm.

The UFC could use her to make money and build her back up, hoping someone else gets the belt.
Now the UFC is risking future $ money with putting her in the title shot. Tate, Cyborg, Holm all do better than this fight and if she loses, don't know yet if she can mentally take it.
Hopefully she has recovered mentally enough to withstand another loss. While the rest of the females get better, she continues with the same coach and same training.
This will be an interesting lead up to the fights.

I thought they wouldn't give her the shot unless Tate still was champ. Look at what 1 ko loss did to her. Nunes has power to make her look worse and isn't terrible on the ground.

I dont get how you "build Rousey up"? She isnt going to fight Cyborg and even if she was fighting Cyborg is a big risk given her striking deficiencies. She's beat Tate twice so we dont need to see that if Tate doesnt have the belt. Holm is perhaps the most difficult fighter for her to face given Holm's length and TD defense. Who would you have her face? Pennington?
You build up people who arent draws. From a business perspective this makes perfect sense. If she loses again against anyone, she likely retires. So you have her fight the biggest name with the highest chance to win and thats Nunes. Nunes isnt that far away from getting dominated on the ground by Cat Zingano. I'm not saying that Ronda is guaranteed to win but she has a pretty good shot to win this.
With a win, Ronda can retire as a champ or face Pena, Cyborg or Holm (if she gets a win). Those are all money fights and likely will do over 1 million.Comment

What would make you think that? They were going to give her an immediate rematch until Holm said she didnt want to wait til 200 to defend her belt.

I agree that she is done with 1 more loss, but unless she has already told the UFC this is her last fight no matter what then they are risking future fights knowing that she has a good chance to lose.
We haven't even seen what shape she is in. She got huge and she already didn't look in great shape for the last fight. USADA makes it tougher to get back in shape. Who knows if the layoff and rust will effect her. That's why I say throw her out there against someone you know she beats.

Re: OS MMA Random Thread
Ronda by herself will sell fights until she loses again. Let her face bottom top 10 fighters, there is really no risk there. Media will build her back up and forget about her striking and maybe she can actually improve it.

This isnt boxing. Fans arent gonna buy a match against someone who has only been on the prelims when the belt isnt on the line. Plus the UFc is interested in losing money. Ronda makes a good amount of money. The last thing you want to do is put her in a fight that wont sell or draw a gate and then still have to pay her guarantee.Comment

Mackenzie Dern missed weight tonight, think she came in at 118.5. It's her 2nd pro fight
Hope it doesnt become a trend. She didn't seem to look too gaunt on the scale but who knows. I guess she competed at 129 in BJJ"Successful people do not celebrate in the adversity or misfortune of others."

Re: OS MMA Random Thread
I'm meh about her right now just because she missed weight. I don't know why she did, and I understand crazy things can happen when cutting weight. I can't really hold it against her just because she's so new, but I never really am impressed with anyone's performance if they missed weight.
On another note, now that Sholler is leaving UFC I can't help but think it has to do WME/IMG considering Silva is leaving also. Google makes me think the new owners are sort of cleaning house.Comment

Sad to hear GSP terminated his contract hopefully the UFC renegotiate. Otherwise we might see GSP v Askren, Koreshkov, MVP etc good fights either way. GSP may prefer the UFC big money fights at this point but I can see Viacom pricing him up.Comment

Re: OS MMA Random Thread
Missing weight is missing weight. 3 pounds at 115 is like 5 pounds at 185-205, it's not like she just barely missed. People talk smack about bigger male fighters that miss by less than that, she doesn't get any extra special treatment from me.
About WME, if I was them Silva would be one of the first people to go. Considering they are agents and Silva was notoriously difficult and stubborn with agents and managers I certainly wouldn't want him around. I'm not saying they forced him to go, but i would have.
"Joe Silva and Dave Sholler are the big names to go so far, but they won't be the last. WME-IMG want to bring in their own people. I've been told that by January it will be a very, very different company. A lot of people behind the scenes are worried about their future or looking elsewhere."
About GSP, I'm surprised he even wanted to do business with the UFC. Immediately after the Hendricks fight it seemed like Dana was throwing him under the bus. He was treated pretty terrible as soon as the fight was over and he was in locker room. Thing i find interesting is WME pulled current offer GSP had off the table as soon as they took ownership.Comment

UFC claims GSP is still under contract. Oh boy.
Statement from ufc
“Georges St-Pierre remains under an existing agreement with Zuffa, LLC as his MMA promoter,” the statement read. “Zuffa intends to honor its agreement with St-Pierre and reserves its rights under the law to have St-Pierre do the same.”
