This will be a shock to many, but Khabib-Tony is likely off. Khabib is in Russia and country is on lockdown, so he's not going anywhere. UFC already looking into replacement options.

Yep it was off once he left the US a few weeks ago. Unless Tony goes to Russia, they cannot fight in the US.Comment

Re: MMA Off-Topic
At the risk of sounding like a complete idiot: why exactly aren't they holding the events? Obviously the public would be banned, causing the income of the gate to lower to zero, but if they test the fighters ahead of time, there can't be an issue, right? There will be foreign fighters who won't be able to make it, but they can be replaced. People won't care that much (events>no events). Sure, it will disrupt your matchmaking, but the show must go on, right?
Their subscription service is still running so I don't see it mattering thàt much financially. I know several people still need to interact with the fighters, but it can't be that much of a problem if you take precautions and have everyone tested. Even with 100 people involved, if they are 100% clean (virusfree, that is).
Or is there just a hard ban on sports, including "darts", "bowling" and other sports without any interaction whatsoever? I know team sports are all shutting down, but there you seem to have more complications.Comment

Re: MMA Off-Topic
In the cage, it's just two people gathering for recreational/sports purposes. Most countries still allow you to have a walk by two, or a bike ride. There's definitely a way to never have more than 2 people in short distance to another at all times.
But like Wimbledon today, it has to do more with the people involved being stuck in their home countries and the prestige of the event being more important than continuity. I forgot that it's unlikely that people can even exit their state, even on "work" ventures.Comment

To have our UFC 245 event approved by a commission we need to keep it below 11 people right?
Now, we can't have 10 people in the Las Vegas Apex Facility and then take them out and have 10 new people come in 20 minutes later. that is a contamination risk (we aren't debating the dangers of the virus, or how it spreads. ONLY what we need to do to for the commission to approve our event.)
Here's my super quick guess for a normal UFC event:- 20 Fighters
- 60 corner men (3 per fighter)
- 3 Judges (From the state commission)
- 4 Referees (for the whole night)
- 2 cut men (from the state commission)
- 5 state security (those guys in red jackets)
- 10 UFC security
- 2 doctors (From the state commission)
- 2 Paramedics
- 1 Ring announcer
- 2 Ring girls
- 2 commentators
- 1 event reporter (Megan Olivi)
- 1 Dana White to wrap the belt around a champion
- 7 Camera men
- 2 Crane operators
- 2 On the audio mixing
- 2 on the broadcast editing
- 2 on the lighting
- 5 assistants running around backstage with water bottles and towels
- 1 to oversee it all
approx. 140 people to make your average UFC event.
Now let's start shaving this bad boy down. What do NEED? Well, first we can kiss our card goodbye, the 20 fighters alone is too many. Let's just put on Khabib vs Tony, in the Apex Facility with one ****ing camera man, bum fight style:- 2 Fighters
- 2 corner men (Khabib gets one, Tony gets one)
- 3 Judges (From the state commission)
- 1 Referee
- 2 cut men (1 for Khabib 1 for Tony)
- 1 Camera guy
- 1 doctor (From the state commission)
- 1 paramedic
Ouch, and that's just for our 1vs1 backyard brawl style production. Oh, and remember those commission guys have to be there for them to sanction a fight.
So how do we get around this? We could go to another country that doesn't have commisions, but that means we have to travel and that's its own logistical nightmare right now. Or we could have the event in multiple arenas with a crew of 10 in each place.
This fun little logistical game we're playing right now is probably exactly what the UFC has been doing for the last week.
bottom line?
Khabib vs Tony in September sounds good to me.Comment

Re: MMA Off-Topic
Thanks for doing that exercise. When you put it all together, it's quite impressive how many people are involved.
But the alternative would involve the fights being held at their performance/training center. In theory it seemed doable to me, but I didn't really seem to know the rules in play. Like: can't they change it so judges can watch from a distance (like a different room)? Probably not, but it seems a bit silly if these are all set in stone.Comment

Why is he an idiot? As long as people all test negative before getting on a private plane, what harm is there? He is just the first willing to spend money to get it done.

They've been paying $2M a year for 17 years. They'll be getting $141M for shutting down this years tournament:
