I think people can get too caught up in what I call the Olympic aspect of it. What I mean is some people look at it like the only people that should be getting title shots are guys that have climbed their way all the way up the ladder, beating every other contender along the way, removing all doubt that they're the number one contender. It's like they want an Olympic-style tournament to decide who gets title shots.
And there's nothing really wrong with that, at least in the 'purity of the sport' sense.
But the UFC is a business, and GSP's gotta fight somebody when he's ready. And if you go through the list of possible contenders, Dan Hardy finds himself surprisingly high up. GSP has recently beat Fitch, Alves, Koscheck, and Hughes, so they're out. Daley, Kampmann, Condit, and Paulo Thiago all have recent losses, so they're out. That really just leaves Swick and Hardy.
Since no one is beating down the door for either of those guys to get a title shot, they're gonna fight each other to determine who gets it, and the hope is a better challengers will emerge by the time June rolls around for GSP's next fight.
If Hardy wins, he's clearly the best choice in the top 15 UFC WWs or so right now. He'll be 4-0 in the UFC (against good, but not great, competition), and he'd be 12-1 in his last 13 with his only loss coming by DQ. Like I said, someone's gotta fight GSP.
