Re: UFC 124 - GSP vs. Koscheck 2

Joe Stevenson isnt getting cut per Dana.

"We like guys that fight, we like guys that come in and lay it on the line. Joe Stevenson's had a bad run, it's so tough to cut a guy that comes in and does what he's supposed to do, and he's one of those guys. He got knocked out trying to knock (Danzig) out tonight. That's what happened. We'll see what happens with Joe Stevenson. I respect him, Joe (Silva) respects him, we like him and I wouldn't say he's getting cut, no."
EDIT- To add to this, Dana announced last night that Jake Shields is indeed getting the next shot at GSP so those hoping for the superfight with Anderson will have to wait awhile longer still.

        Nooooooooooooooooooooooo

They had to do it though after bringing him in.

I'm afraid we won't see Spider/GSP when they're in their primes

Jake still wants to fight him after seeing that? That can be 3 wrestlers faces turned to mush by GSP.

They really have no choice. They want GSP to fight in Toronto in late April. Silva fights in early Feb and even if he ko's Belfort with no damage, he probably wont want to fight a beast like GSP with only 2 mos to prepare.

Plus Silva still has Belfort and Sonnen to take care of. Superfight wont happen until the fall at the earliest.

I think at the earliest we see it around the beginning of 2012. I just don't see it happening this year at this point.

Would GSP get a middleweight warm up? Or would he just go straight for Silva... and would it be catchweight or at 185?

By the time it could make the most sense, Silva will be a year or maybe even two older and that much more away from his prime. And that's assuming both guys keep winning.

Sad, because I wouldn't mind seeing GSP/Silva if both guys won their next bouts.

                Screw Sonnen.

I would do the same thing they did with Penn when they made the fight for St. Pierre/Penn 2. No warm up just give GSP the shot (There was a difference with Penn since he fought at WW before the second St. Pierre fight).

Catchweight does nothing because GSP has practically cleaned out WW. He has to move up. So might as well make it a MW fight. The fight will happen in the Fall if both guys stay healthy.

Cant say screw Sonnen though. That fight is a mark on Silva's legacy imo. He was dominated and pulled out a hail mary. He needs to decisively beat Sonnen imo. After that its GSP or a permanent move to LHW now that Machida no longer has the belt.

The only reason I disagree is because that means GSP wont fight again after April (assuming he fights in Toronto). There is NO one left at WW. Maybe they will give him a warmup fight at MW but why risk him losing and ruining a potential superfight with Silva.

Yeah you're right, I would actually love to see Sonnen/Spider II. I'm just not sure if a Fall date is possible.

Spider's got his next three fights lined up it seems, assuming he keeps winning.

                      Belfort, Okami, Sonnen.

If he happens to get through all three of these guys... it'll be closer to 2012. He pretty much averages 3 fights a year.

Silva's gonna be pretty aged by then too... it just sucks.

Best PPV in a long time

We all the saw the card so there's no need for me to talk about what happened last night.

I thought the coverage by the media was excellent. Sportsnet had a 1 hr preview show before the card, OTR had 2 shows dedicated to the event, and I even saw Ariel Helwani on CBC. While the UFC has become a lot more "mainstream" in the past couple of years, it still has a long way to go. I was watching Primetime Sports and the panel tried to "talk" about the UFC. One guy said the UFC is just like the WWF and another guy said he wouldn't be comfortable if his son told him he wanted to be a UFC fighter. Now of course all of these guys are in their 50's, so they're not the target audience.

Outside of the card itself, my favorite part of fight week was Dana White getting ripped by the Canadian media when he said GSP is the most famous athlete to ever come out of Canada. The media basically flipped it on him and made it seem like he was bashing Gretzky, lol.

I think the Okami fight wont happen. Sonnen will jump the line because he was supposed to fight Silva in Feb.

I was incredibly proud to see that on a day when the Heisman trophy was awarded and NCAA and NBA games were on...that GSP was on the front page of ESPN.com. ESPN barely recognized the sport two yrs ago and now its trumped boxing as the biggest combat sport in the world.

At least Koscheck has OK striking, I can only imagine what is going to happen to Shields. He's not getting GSP to the floor and he doesn't have any KO power for GSP to worry about. Will probably be even more of a domination than this fight.

The lightweight division is just stacked with contenders now. Edgar/Maynard on Jan 1st, then you have Henderson/Pettis winner, Sotiropolous, Jim Miller, Evan Dunham, Gomi with another win or 2, and Penn.

I agree with you, but have said in the past that GSP doesn't realize how good his striking is and thus doesn't like standing as much since the 1st fight with Sera.

One thing that I thought was great for him was getting blasted by that strong uppercut - I don't think he REALLY saw it coming either - so that's great for his confidence taking a clean big blow like that and knowing he was alright to keep throwing.

On the other hand GSP gameplans for the opponents weakness (or lowest skill set) so every fight is like a different person in a sense. Last night was a boxing clinic. His jab was fantastic all night. Some nice sharp right hands too.

As for the minority comments complaining about not finishing him. Kos was the same as Howard earlier on the card. Both of them had pretty much acquiesced to lose. It's harder to knock someone out when you're leading by a large margin and the other guy is simply in survival mode sometimes. Very early on in both fights they knew they were effed. Koscheck noticed gsp was punching him almost at will especially when he was looking to throw, was surprised by the speed and crispness and didn't know what to do. At least that's my take on it, coupled with the fact that gsp doesn't really have that big 1 punch ko power either because he just doesn't or doesn't ever throw a punch with all he's got because it puts him out of position/technique.

Sucks for Okami but I don't care to see that fight at all.

I'd prefer Vitor, Sonnen then immediate title bout vs. GSP.

Still though, I really think the GSP won't be until 2012. The Vitor fight is in Feb, the Sonnen fight will prob be in July or August... then the superfight will probably start off 2012.

Then I would like to see Spider finally move up to LHW to end his career.

"If Georges said he was going to go to 185 and stay there, then it would be for the title," White told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "It would be a superfight for the 185-pound title.

"It's hard to say no. It's hard for me to say, 'This fight doesn't make sense.'"
