It'll probably be a slap-on-the-wrist suspension until, say, February. Then CSAC can claim a victory over Sonnen for failing to declare while Sonnen will be fine at the same time and can do Ultimate Fighter with Bisping or fight, whatever comes first.

These are the facts, as best I can ascertain.

- Sonnen is on Hormone Replacement Therapy.
- HRT is a "permanent therapy" and not something you do for three months and then are done with it.
- When he fought Okami in LA, Sonnen declared it, jumped through hoops and did the entire shebang.
- CSAC approved it.
- Sonnen came back to fight in Cali again and, since HRT is a permanent therapy and in his case had been approved by CSAC before, he didn't think he'd have to jump through hoops AGAIN.
- Unbeknownst to him, CSAC had changed since his last fight in California and the new commission wanted to turn over a new leaf and be nothing like the commission of old.

Opinion part:

In other words, Sonnen got caught in a political crossfire. If he's guilty of anything, he's guilty of being a ******* and assuming, instead of going through the process. I will cut him some slack for being down with the flu leading up to the fight, with his main priority being getting better so he can get through the week and the fight.



This is pretty interesting. I still think its shady as hell that Sonnen is on this kind of therapy.

I think he's saying Sonnen didn't really cheat but is involved in some permanent Hormone treatment that the drug testing treats like PED's.

The only reason it's an issue now and wasn't against Okami, was b/c he didn't go through the steps necessary to get it approved. He didn't do that because he believed since he did it once, he wouldn't have to do it again.

LOL. I'll try but I was confused also at first.


-Sonnen claims that he naturally has low levels of testosterone so he needs to go through Hormone Replacement Therapy in order to increase it. (Dan Henderson and Matt Hughes apparently do the same therapy).

-In California, you have to declare that you are on this therapy months before a fight and it has to be approved by the commission. Sonnen declared it to the CA commission before the Okami fight and was approved to use it.

- The rules used to be in CA that once it was approved you only had to declare the therapy once. But that rule recently changed and before the Silva fight, Sonnen was supposed to declare (and get approved) that he was taking the threapy.

So Sonnen will claim that he was going off of the old rules and did not know that he was supposed to get the therapy approved. Since this isnt a clear cut use of steroids or PEDs, many assume that Sonnen will just get a slap on the wrist.

There is speculation that Dana thinks this is what is going to happen and plans to name Sonnen and Bisping as the next ultimate fighter coaches (assuming that Sonnen is only suspended one or two months). This is why the Bisping/Rivera fight in Australia in Feb. hasnt been officially announced.

I didn't know that he had low levels of testosterone... I think that's bizarre that you can get it "replaced" like that in some sort of therapy. How strange.

Seems sort of shady to me the whole process..........

Oh its shady as **** but technically legal. The WWE banned that type of therapy because wrestlers were getting shady doctors to claim that they had low testosterone so they could get PEDs legally.

Yeah, that seems shady as hell to me as well. It seems like it could just be an easy way of masking that you really are using PEDs.

And I personally hope the next TUF isn't Sonnen/Bisping as coaches. I know it would provide a hell of a lot of **** talking, but I hate both guys. Meh.

Just poking around on teh googles a bit.

I've been reading that weight cuts at younger ages can have an effect on your
endocrine system. It will be interesting to see once actual experts weigh in on biological
aspects of this.

Just sayin'..

The CSAC was a joke before, but it's been cleaned up over the past few years. Because Chael failed to comply with the rules, he'll be "suspended" like Sherk, but still be able to proclaim his innocence. No real biggie. Just do TUF with Bisping. Chael is an awesome TV character and this would be a decent MW contender fight.

what does that mean? For the layman, does that mean he was taking the equivalent of steroids and would have all the major benefits that they provide?

I'd like to know if we're talking about real good 'ol fashioned cheating or if we're talking about something that's banned but wouldn't really change him from a loser to a winner.

Sonnen gets the Sherk treatment, CSAC wont fully admit it was wrong, but reduces suspension to a 6 month suspension including time served.

He's already served 3 months, so only 3 more to go. I wonder who the UFC will have him fight when he comes back, since Okami is promised the next title shot?
