Re: UFC 137: Diaz v. Penn - Oct 29
I believe it has all been pretty much covered. I will reiterate, however, that GSP will not attempt to beat Nick at Nick's strength. I think what is important to note here is that Nick is more of a boxer where GSP is a striker, modifying his tactics based on the opponent. The reason GSP destroyed Kos with that Jab was because their wrestling abilities nullified one another. If GSP were boxing, I'm certain Kos would have been shooting all night long, but he couldn't due to GSP's shoot-aware striking stance.
Nick's stance, in my opinion, makes him prime picking for the jab, however, he is excellent on his back, so is less concerned with being taken down.
I may be in the minority, but I want to see Nick win. GSP lost me with he prima donna ways. Additionally, there is a fine line between fighting safe and fighting scared. Lately, I'm not so sure which GSP is doing. And is it me, or is this guy averaging the longest lay-offs between bouts, or what? In most of his fights, he sustains minimal damage or a nagging injury, yet it seems like he's fighting either once or twice a year.
In any event, I think it will be a good fight. If my dream comes true, and the fight is spent mostly on feet, I can truly see GSP melting from Diaz's onslaught. Going in the other direction, GSP wins by stifling the action against the cage and mat, scoring solely on take-downs.
GSP will ruin Diaz.
I said before Cerrone is a title contender...I think he won the 1st bendo fight and he is a load for anyone
you're right GSP will out jab him, but also out everything him. I don't know what you're talking about scared...he is trying TOO hard to finish...against Sheilds he was telegraphing big righ hands and if anything THAT will be his only weakness against Diaz is trying to silence people by finishing him. I felt BJ won a round, and I just don't see anything DIAZ can do vs GSP.
you know what? Diaz will be a douche in defeat. Condit deserves it, that performance was good, but to be honest, I don't see a GSP killer there, I think Condit and even more Johnson is much more of a threat.
GSP is a standup guy who's been raised well and a solid person - bar none I will always support a guy like that, there is no act there, he is a humble, positive person who anyone should gain inspiration from imo.
sorry to add to that I think condit and johnson beats DIAZ if they foughtLast edited by allBthere; 11-03-2011, 01:32 AM.Liquor in the front, poker in the rear.Comment

Johnson's gas tank is in major question in my eyes, especially in a five round fight. I don't see how Johnson beats GSP either, I think at least Diaz has a chance to try for some submissions on the ground, or can maybe reel off some combinations on the feet to stun GSP. Long shots, but still, a better opponent than Johnson at this time. What is Johnson gonna do? Only thing I can think of is use his size to ward off GSP's takedowns? IDK.
Condit I understand, he's legit to me. I think Condit v Diaz would be an absolute war and would put it at even odds. Not sure what Condit does better than Diaz.
Right now I would peg Kos, GSP as guys who would simply outpoint Diaz by laying on him all fight long.
I think Condit and Fitch would get even odds with me vs. Diaz.
Diaz v Johnson would be awesome, I think Diaz would lull him into a brawl and Diaz would submit him eventually.Comment

Why do I think Condit has a better chance than Diaz? Because condit to me is more of a killer and he has a more dynamic striking game vs Diaz who is basically straight boxing. Straight boxing won't work vs gsp. Condit has a bit of a muay thai game. Condit also avoids punches better than Diaz who ate loads of shots in the Penn fight. when you eat punches your face gets messed up and you're not looking as good to the judges.
Diaz's cardio is amazing, but when's the last time you saw condit gas-out? Or johnson? It's not like they're out of shape.
If GSP wants to move up in weight, he should want to fight Johnson.
Maybe he should fight all 3 and just may do so, before retiring or moving up.Liquor in the front, poker in the rear.Comment

If Johnson is moving up it doesn't matter.
Also I think unlike Daley, he wouldn't beat in his own game striking. Diaz wouldn't be able to get him down, and his one shot power is obvious.Cincinnati Reds University of Kentucky Cincinnati Bengals

I still question if Rumble is a better matchup for GSP than Diaz though.
I love Rumble though. I just question him as much as people question Diaz.
I question his tank mostly. He has one punch knock out power.. I think that's one of the most overrated things in MMA.Comment

Cesar Gracie formally invited BJ Penn to combine his team with Cesar Gracie's team and become one large team. I personally think it would be great for BJ to get back to where he started and a fresh change of pace but I have a hard time believing he would do it.

I like the idea, and that was a pretty nice interview.
However I can't help but to think that Cesar is overstepping his boundaries. I think he basically just took a crap on BJ's coaches. All of them.
I initially was looking for a Machiavellian reason as to why Cesar would do all of this but I think he actually cares.

Circumstances put us to fight each other but let’s put that aside now and lets fight a common enemy from this point out. Let’s fight these other guys, these guys that are the lay n pray guys, these guys that are ruining MMA.Comment

Cool interview. I didn't realize BJ was only 32. He's been fighting in the UFC forever. He definitely has some years left in this sport if he wants to continue doing this.
Being a fan of both Cesar's camp and BJ, I'd love to see them unite. It could only be a positive thing it they made it happen. Down with the lay and prayers!Comment

Yeah no doubt Penn needs a change, only thing that worries me is if they join, how are the egos gonna mix with Cesar and BJ's camp. I am very interested to hear BJ's camp's reaction.
Also, anywhere BJ goes he'll still have to avoid Nick/Shields at WW and then Gil/Nate at LW. Maybe not that big of a problem, but that's the first thing I thought of.Comment

Re: UFC 137: Diaz v. Penn - Oct 29
Agreed but sometimes the truth is harsh and lets be honest, Penn hasnt looked consistently good in ages it seems, or basically since he destroyed Florian and Sanchez before dropping two to Frankie. Penn needs a change of scenery, a coach that will push him and get the best from him and I think going back to where it all started is a good idea. Penn admits he has to change things up if hes going to compete at a high level consistently but hes said that in the past as well and its been short lived so unless hes willing to change everything up then he might as well retire as Id rather he retire then perform like he did in this last fight.Currently Playing:

Penn had arguably the best natural talent ever. Even though he will be a hall of famer most likely, he could have been the GOAT if he actually tried every fight. Partly a waste of talent imoCincinnati Reds University of Kentucky Cincinnati Bengals

According to Dave Meltzer, this PPV only did around 280K buys. We can cross Penn off the list of guys that are able to sell PPV's.
The UFC has very few PPV stars right now (Lesnar/GSP in the first tier and than the second tier with Rampage, Jones, and Silva).Comment

I think Cain is there. Projections were showing that the Cain/JDS would have done 800k on PPV.Comment
