Not sure why Brock was there. He's not an intriguing speaker. When I found out that they were only broadcasting a single fight I knew the show was in trouble. 30 mins of talking. Dana had to know that a HW fight with guys throwing like Cain and JDS that this could end quickly. There wasn't much else for the viewer to enjoy.

Also it was tough being on the same night as college football not to mention a major boxing match. I actually watched at a bar and most of the bar cleared out after JDS ended the fight. I'm sure this had to skew the numbers a bit b/c most sports bars in my area were showing the fight.

Also there were a lot of people in bars to see the manny/marquez bout. I know some bars showed both.

Not to mention a lot of potential viewers were at college football stadiums or coming from games earlier in the day.

With other major sporting events going on, bars, and I think a poorly conceived show, this killed the numbers.

I am not surprised by the numbers at all. The whole 1st half hour was nothing but talking and commercials. So I am pretty sure a lot of people turned away after the 1st 10 minutes of nothing.

Plus heavyweights typically aren't all that exciting anyway. They should have had the Ben-Clay fight on there and some more of the lower weight classes.

I agree with your other points, but I think it made a lot of sense to put Brock in the telecast.

Recognizable face, he was Cain's last opponent and also will be fighting for a shot at either Cain or JDS.

For a first show like this, they really had to tailor it a certain way. I am willing to bet FOX 2 is going to look 110% different.

You're right. They needed a mainstream crossover name. Still, and Dana, I know the deal doesn't start until January, but there should have been one more fight.

UFC on Fox postfight: White tells critics to ‘shut up’

UFC president Dana White had to know what was coming.
A 64-second knockout of Cain Velasquez by Junior dos Santos in the one-fight UFC debut on Fox was going to draw strong reaction from both ends of the spectrum.
But 30 minutes after the Fox show ended, the UFC president had already heard enough negativity and seen too many critical comments on Twitter.
So White lashed out during the UFC on Fox postfight press conference.
"For anyone to [expletive] about this fight because they didn't get to see [this fight or] that fight ... shut up! You should've bought tickets if you wanted to see all the fights," White said. "And you don't like to watch them on Facebook? Seriously, shut up."
White went on to explain that too many of the hardcore fight fans, who were loudest critics of the one-fight format, have a narrow-minded view of the sport.
"Every weirdo comes from everywhere, [talking] about how bad fighting is and joining the 'Coalition of I Have Nothing Better To Do With My Life.''" said White. "These are the stories we have to tell to mainstream America. Because most of us in this room live in this bubble called MMA. It's a world of triangle chokes and arm bars, all the [expletive] people have never heard of. They don't understand it. They don't know what it is. We have to ease people into this, so that's what we did tonight."
White said it was also important to expose the new fans to kind of fighters featured in the heavyweight title fight.

I need to see the ratings breakdown. The ratings are skewed because the fight didn't start until 9:40. I would like to see how many people were tuned in at that time. Also, I totally forgot about the Oregon/Stanford game which definitely took away viewers.

I just don't know who they put on Fox 2 if they are intent on having it in January. All the major names are booked.

I think the UFC and Fox has to be disappointed with the rating. It was also weird to see Dana rip into Cain after the match. He would have been better off hyping up JDS considering he's the new champion. Brock has me rolling with some of his comments last night. I'm glad he's back. The UFC is more fun when he's around.

I thought the production was solid although I missed the black and white talking heads intro.

What in the world was Cain thinking? Didn't even try a takedown. After he landed the first two leg kicks he should've went for it. I wasn't cheering for anyone in Lesnar/Overeem before but I'd really like to see JDS/Overeem.

                    Bendo/Guida was real nice though.

Guys, what do you expect from Cain? The fight lasted a minute. How much wrestling and shooting can he do in the first minute?

Yeah I was looking at that in the other thread. That's gonna be a problem for sure.

Overall, I think it flopped to be honest. In terms of drawing in the casual viewer or making new fans. The way they set it up, they weren't exactly making it easy on themselves to begin with by having only one hour and having one televised fight.

The two little background pieces on Cain and JDS were kind of unecessary IMO. I'd have rather had another fight air instead of that.

I think Dana's response was really off base as well. Not everyone has a FB. Especially the older folks, late 20's and up. He sounds whiny, arrogant and I'm sure turned people off who were interested enough to check for post fight reaction.

If their goal was to get new viewers and to use this as a stepping stone to mainstream MMA, I really don't think they started too great.

                        Huh?

UFC on Fox did a 3.1 rating and 5.7 million viewers for the one-hour broadcast, based on the fast national Nielsen numbers. It was the largest audience ever to watch an MMA television show in the United States, breaking the record of 5.3 million set on Sept. 30, 2009, for an episode of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality show on Spike TV featuring a taped match of Kimbo Slice vs. Roy Nelson.
“I’m pumped,” said UFC president Dana White when he got the numbers Sunday. “I wouldn’t change a thing. We had to introduce the sport to a bunch of people who had never been it before.

“It would have been great to have had a three-round war, but we can’t control how the fight is going to go.”

You are joking right? Cain beat Brock like a bum noway does Brock last 30 seconds with Junior....Brock can't take a good punch he goes into shock mode...But I wouldn't mind seeing brock run like a girl again like he did when Carwin and Cain hit him...So sure I'd like to see that fight also.

Alright, let's at least see what Brock does against Overeem before saying he wouldn't last 30 seconds with JDS.

See if he improved at all on his feet. All he has to do is be competent on his feet to really bring out his world class wrestling/strength.

Unfortunately you can't really improve your chin, but you can improve your technique and defense. He doesn't have to improve leaps and bounds in that department, just at least be comfortable. If that happens, it could be a whole new ball game for the HW division.
