Because their Co-Main got dropped due to injury too. Koscheck was supposed to fight someone, Koscheck wouldnt do Jones numbers but he is still a draw. Injuries decimated the card. Without henderson the fight was gonna see a drop most likely. But Sonnen stepped up to salvage the card. Noone in the history of the UFC has ever turned down a replacement opponent, they declined to take fights on short notice, but never were they scheduled for a fight, their opponent drops with injury, and then they refuse to accept a new opponent. this wasnt a case of they couldnt find someone to fight Jones on 8 days notice with no training camp, which if they couldn't, noone would blame anyone for not taking that offer. This was somone has a FULL CAMP, and then because his opponent dropped with injury, he eclined to fight somone who was coming off the couch. Plus they scrambled and found a plan B, Jones declined it. This is Jones' fault.

It would have been tough to find a LHW willing to take that fight on 8 days notice, but props to anderson for stepping up unlike a certain champion at 205Comment

I see what you're saying, but even with the Kos fight, it was still pretty weak.Comment

Interesting reading through all the pages after the debacle.
I don't have anything against Jon Jones but I do see how people are upset with him. I understand injuries have plagued all of these recent cards so I won't blame "oversaturation" for the cancellation of 151.
However I would like to know: when Dana and others of you say "well, this was the first time a champion has turned down a fight and it's the first time a UFC card has been cancelled", what other champion has had to make a decision on 8 days notice?
That would be interesting to read some of those cards. I understand Jones has more of a responsibility since he is the main event so of course fighters have beef but again what other champs have had to make a decision like this? I'm not mad at Jon Jones at all and to the assertion that he's a brat or that he's acting entitled, seems totally off base. I would like to hear other champs who have been faced with similar situations until I feel otherwise about Jones.
I don't think it's as black and white as he's a fighter, he should do what his boss says. There has to be a give and take between fighter and promoter.. especially when we're talking someone like Jon Jones.Last edited by ex carrabba fan; 08-24-2012, 02:52 PM.Comment

While it's a bitch to comb through every champions reign and find every short notice fight ever. You have guys like Rich Franklin (Any number of fights, he's the ultimate team player.), Matt Hughes (Trigg, Alves off the top of my head), Chuck Liddell (Franklin, Horn), Tito Ortiz (Cote) who always took short notice fights. I'm not even going to get started on all the PRIDE fights with guys like Wanderlei, Shogun, etc that happened on short notice. They had multiple fights in one night against different fighters. That's short notice.
Maybe the sports going that way where fighters have to "worry" about sponsorships and public image but man. Not good PR for Jones at all.Comment

Still don't get the shock and awe act when Jones said specifically that he wouldn't let Sonnen, by name, leapfrog people for a shot. Regardless of the situation. And he's not going to get booed everywhere he goes because end of the day his fights deliver and he finishes.Comment
