Re: CM Punk has signed with the UFC

I'm eager to see how he does.

Question, when/if he wins the title, will he leave the company and take it with him?
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

It's really not comparable at all. No even in the slightest. Dana actually knows what's best for business.

Working as a commentator or in-studio analyst for UFC would be something Punk could be good at after he gets competitive fighting out of his system.

Glad to see a few people actually understand what Punk is doing and not just jumping to conclusions. I've seen people say hes doing it for the money, publicity stunt, doing it to stick it to the WWE...to be honest I think it's just something he really wants to do and has never had that opportunity while he was with the WWE. It's well known he's been a fan of the sport for a long time and loves to train. Will he do well? Who knows, but I doubt he's in denial and plans on fighting for his weightclasses belt. He's gonna do a few fights and have fun, simple as that.

I reckon that's what will happen. He would be an amazing commentator.

Don't underestimate him though, I reckon he will be better at the fight game than people will give him credit for.

I don't know anything about the guy, I haven't keep up with wrestling since I was 12. But, I wish him the best.

I think this is stupid, especially since he isn't a 265 pound mammoth who was an elite college wrestler like Lesnar, but at least he seems honest about this and not spouting BS which is refreshing. They will probably find a giant tomato can for his debut but even then, I would be surprised if he ever makes any "noise".

Re: CM Punk has signed with the UFC

Punk wouldn't have signed a deal with the UFC if he wasn't capable of competing at a high level. He's a very smart and calculating businessman, so he'll definitely be fully prepared to win when he steps into the octagon for the first time.

That being said, it will be a disaster if they stick him in the octagon with a top-5 guy every fight just to make big money. There's no way he's ready for that kind of competition yet.

He would've been a great guy to throw on The Ultimate Fighter to give that show a boost (not sure they're even doing anymore though), and it would've been much better competition for him than the top guys.

I'm interested to see how it goes, but I would've liked to see him fight once or twice in another promotion before bringing his services to the UFC.

I'm fine with the UFC signing him if he has some MMA fight experience. As he hasn't fought, there is no way I would sign him unless you were putting him in TUF. I know he has trained before, but having no fight experience sounds like a terrible decision. Hopefully the UFC had him tryout and see that he can actually fight.

If he crashes and burns on TUF it doesn't benefit the UFC very much. But they're guaranteed at least one good PPV cash with him on the card. This is a unique situation.

People doubting if this is a good move for the UFC have their eyes closed. His name prints money.

This isn't really accurate at all. He complained that part timers would come in, beat the younger talent while taking their spots then leaving making the guys on the current roster look like chumps. CM Punk was WWE's champion for 434 days yet lost the title to The Rock and lost to Brock Lesnar without getting a chance to "avenge" those losses . That's his main gripe with the part time guys, they're winning when they shouldn't be because they wont be there the next day

Was David Bautista? Was Alberto Rodriguez(Del Rio)? No but they still fought in MMA and the later got KO'ed by Cro Cop. Hell, Hershel Walker was 48 when he made his MMA debut and no one complained then.

People complained about Walker (called it a freak show) but not as loud because 1) it was Strikeforce which was seen as the B league and 2) Walker never wanted to make a career out of it.

I think most of the Punk backlash is because the UFC is the #1 MMA promotion and many feel you should have more experience before getting a shot in the big leagues. I dont have an issue with it as long as Punk isnt headlining PPVs. If they handle him like Kimbo where Kimbo was the 3rd or 4th fight on a PPV, I'll be OK with it.

its presents an interesting dynamic for UFC and MMA as a whole, i do agree he should have picked up a couple fights on some regional circuits and maybe a couple fights in WSOF or Bellator but it is what it is, i feel UFC is in a lose lose situation here, if he gets KO'ed or submitted say within the first round UFC just wasted their time, and if they were to throw a top 15 guy at him and Punk owns the guy it makes MMA look bad

Nah its not lose-lose at all. If Punk gets KOd, the UFC still gets the PPV bump and Punk either goes back to wrestling or takes another fight. Everybody would just excuse it because he is green.

If he KOs someone, the UFC now has a legitimate star who is a huge star. When Brock beat Heath Herring after 2 fights, no one said "Wow this wrestler just beat a legit MMA guy, MMA fighters are weak".
