I sincerely doubt that McMahon actually goes up to a performer these days and says "Hey Fred, if you'd like to make it in my company, and feed your family, then start shootin up buddy." He may have done this in the past (I don't know), but I highly doubt he does that these days.
What I'm referring to are his actions. I haven't watched in years, but it seems he would only push the massive beast dudes. To me, this is a subtle way of telling his employees: "You see who's at the top? You see who's not at the top? You do the math".
In addition, it's clear that these wrestlers popularity lifespans are extremely short lived. They're all recycleable parts, for the most part. When one of them gets injured, there HAS to be extreme pressure to get back into the ring. To quicken the process, they turn to pain killers, sedatives, or whatever gets them through the pain. I think the nature of their job (24/7/365) just takes a tremendous physical toll, and wears all of them down. There's no set off-season to recuperate and just do nothing. They get injured, spend time recovering, then get thrown back into the fire and get pounded again.
I think it would do them a lot of good to have at least 1 or 2 months where there are no shows at all, but that'll never happen..
