Punk vs Cena made me realize something

....before you came along no one tried to kill me...or stuff me in a potato...

Oh wait I am confusing myself and a killer AI

...it made me realize: how the hell can they have Cena vs the Rock for the main event at WM? At 14K yesterday that crowd was hot, the match had everything you could want and hot damn that was some of the best in-ring psychology you could ask for.

How can a match with the Rock top it? Rock vs Hogan was novel....it was something the fans had never really seen and frankly at the time Hogan was still a legend and the Rock was still at the top of his game. Right now 50% of the crowds have turned on Cena and unless the Rock is training day in and day out I do not think he is in main event (or possibly even undercard) shape. I do not think the Rock has the movie star power or sway with younger WWE fans to make it a spectacular main event....

Punk vs the Undertaker on the other hand....

I want the main event at WM to be spectacular. I want it to be like what I watched yesterday. I want to turn off my TV not caring that it was sports entertainment. Yesterday me and my family watched the PPV. All of us cheered, my kids booed, and I oohed and ahhed at some of the great spots. That's what I want as a fan and consumer paying money we don't really have. I am investing in being entertained and I just do not see Rock vs Cena doing that.

You don't think people have been wanting to see Rock v. Cena?

Some, but not as much as other WM matches. I do not think it is main event quality.

LOL are you serious? This would be the rock's first match in almost a decade. People are WAYYYY more interested in that match.

What the Punk vs. Cena match made me realize is that McMahon and the WWE, for the most part, do not utilize their roster talents properly. Last night's ppv was one of the best I've seen in a long-time and it's because the Smackdown and Raw main event matches had guys that can actually wrestle and put on a show in Christian, Punk, and Orton. Cena has definitely improved and is much better than he used to be, but those title matches last night were great and it's because they allowed Christian and Punk to do what they do best and their talents were on full display. I think far too often McMahon buries guys like that in mid-card level fueds and pushes the bigger names, lesser talent guys, in the main event matches and they never live up to the hype and don't even come close in comparison to the matches from last night.

I am serious. Perhaps I am looking at it from the perspective of a longtime fan and see it in a different light.

i don't know that it will have a high workrate, but the wrestlemania event is going to move major units and be a fine spectacle.

I think I get what the OP is getting at...or maybe this is what I am taking from his post.

He just wants a great match, not one sold on novelty. Sure the Rock was a great wrestler...that was years ago now. The match could stink. It would not be the first time a match hyped to the moon fell flat on it's face. Goldberg vs Lesner?

I don't think that will happen though. Rock won't show up out of shape, I really doubt that...plus Goldberg was not much of a performer any ways... But I think WWE should focus more on whose in the company and not the Rock. The Rock will come and go as usual.

A alternate Main Event I'd like to see is scrap the HHH-Taker thing. Let HHH build up a feud with Punk. Punk vs HHH would steal the show IMO. Especially if Punk is still in this 'Austin-lite' F the company tweener mode.

The buying dont buy PPVs because primarily because the main event is going to be a great match. They buy it because of the spectacle. I promise you that MITB will do a huge buyrate and that has nothing to do with the actual match. If they dont run the angle with Punk's "shoots", this buyrate for this PPV gets cut in half. People were excited about the angle and thats why they bought it.

Same with WM. People will be excited about the angle, seeing the Rock do his signature moves and the nostalgia of the match.

I have no doubt in my mind Rock can get into ring shape by April. Lol. Hes not exactly sporting a beer belly as we speak.

You think Punks hometown crowd was hot? wait until you see Rockys....hey, his "birthday bash" pop in MIA was bigger than most superstars now...

Last night was truly something special. It was our Wrestlemania. It was everything WE (the voiceless, the IWC) have always wanted to see, delivered perfectly. It was an amazing night culminating in the perfect match with an atmosphere that could have ONLY been cultivated in Chicago. This whole angle, leading up to Punk going over in one of the IW capitols of the wrestling world was all for us.

Rock-Cena, that's for them. Wrestlemania has always been about the mainstream, the people, those with a voice, the spectacle. It will be huge, the atmosphere will be electric, and it will be amazing in it's own right.

Of course it won't live up to last night because that was for us. In the grand scheme of things on a mainstream, buyrate level, it will live up to the hype just fine and be huge in it's own right.

Thank you WWE for catering to both for once!

Remember, Goldberg-Lesnar fell on it's face because everybody knew they were both leaving and the fans completely pooped on it as a result.
The New England Patriots cheated to win four Super Bowls.

Great post. Rock and Cena will have NOTHING on what happened last night. I'll be excited obviously, but I was one who thought Rock/Hogan was supremely overrated. I imagine this to be the same.
