Cena's already been a heel, doesn't have the same support as a face, there's no nostalgia at play, etc...no way it would have the same reaction or impact.

As much as I don't personally like his character, I'm fine with them leaving Cena in the role he's working into now. I don't think they can garner enough heat for him as a heel anyway, ironically enough. If anything, all the booing from the "hardcore" or "grownup" crowd has galvanized his base. It would take him completely breaking character and doing something awful for the kids and women who support him to jump ship at this point.

It's the perfect setup for WWE right now IMO. I think they are playing it well right now too by trumping up the split (as opposed to before when they had the announcers trying to act like it wasn't going on to that extent). He can still occasionally snap off on certain guys and stay in character. He'll be forgiven by his base and dubbed an even bigger hypocrite by those booing. It only further pushes the split and keeps his character relevant.

Very true. In fact, NOBODY saw the Hogan turn coming. Cena, well, Kane is egging him on.

In fact, IIRC, when Hogan came out, the place erupted, followed by shock when he started beating up Sting with Nash's help.And of course the revealing of the NWO t-shirt; the trash started flying into the ring from the crowd.

Doubtful that'd ever happen with Cena.....

I felt more like I was on his side when people booed him and what not.

Yeah, I was the same way with Savage as a kid. I still cheered for him after he turned on Hogan even though everyone else I knew that watched was going for Hogan.

Hogan who had been the good guy forever. I mean forever. When he was coming to the ring, he went something along the lines of "yeah but who's he coming to help?"

Its Hogan. Everyone with half a brain should have known he was coming to the faces aid. Announcer pretty much gave the turn away, because nobody had any reason to doubt until he said that.

That was Heenan. His on-air history with Hogan alone could make it work IMO, but he was also the one kind of building the whole conspiracy throughout the match, as I recall (I think he intimated something about one of the guys in the match turning at some point as well) so it at least made some sense.

Another big reason it went over so well is even the hardcore fans had less of an "inside" without the strong internet presence there is now. Today, everyone but the kids would booing Hogan before he even hit the ramp...lol.
