I think this whole "big name vs. big name free match on Raw" thing was started a little over a year ago when ratings really started to freefall. I thought it was a pretty bold move by the WWE at the time and I get there reasoning now.
Alot of viewers tuned in expecting to see The Rock. Once it was apparent he wasn't going to be on the show they gave us one of the biggest current stars CM Punk against three stars who were pretty well known and have put on great matches with him before. The hope was that viewers would keep tuning in to see the match and all the other surprises that were had (Henry; Brock; etc.) But this doesn't really work for a few reasons:
-It's just too hard to stay interested for a 3 hour show. It was awesome when we got a Mysterio/Cena match for the WWE Championship two hours after it was annouced; but the three hour thing is just too much; especially when you have to sit through recaps; the social media crap; etc.
-It really doesn't help ratings because it's not announced beforehand on the previous RAW that we would see these matches. If you tuned in the middle of the show; you might not even know you were going to see Punk/Jericho later. I think there is a strong overreliance on social media...some people..myself included just want to watch the show because football is over with. I don't want to download an app or go to WWE.com to see what next week's main event is going to be.
