Oh yeah, that stands out completely. I remember as a kid not liking him because I thought he was trying to hard to be like JR. Now, if he was like that, he'd probably be the best play by play guy.

JR was also feeding Cole lines during that time; you can see an example of that in Beyond The Mat.

Yea I'm going through late 02 to probably whenever Edge/Taker/Batista ended their feud in like 07/08. And Cole/Tazz are the commentary pair for SD and it's actually not that bad. And I wouldn't mind getting rid of extra 3 guys on SD and pairing Mauro and Tazz together.

I never really had a problem with commentary until that JR for Cole swap at the draft about 10 years ago. Ever since then, seems like they had heavy restrictions on guys and try making commentators all follow the same mold.

I think more than anything, commentators don't really try to work together, Raw just feels like it has three guys calling things independently, other than Graves occasionally making fun of Saxton. As awful as I think Otunga is, JBL has been much more tolerable since moving to Smackdown, he seems to have a decent rapport with Otunga instead of just yelling over everyone

Maybe somebody sat JBL down and told him that burying talent/segments seemingly at random wasn't the best way to go.

He could be a great strictly heel announcer, but he picks and chooses his spots based on what he thinks is entertaining. Jesse Ventura used to do that a little here and there, but he'd get away with it because he was on another level.

I really liked his pre WWE stuff to, loved how he would talk about guys college backgrounds or how Mike Rotundo was a punt pass kick finalist as an 8 year old.

Who did you think it should be?

I loved it. I think it's the best storyline ever with the build up/seeds being planted and then what came of it.

It also had the best Undertaker theme.

I'm not sure who should have ultimately been it. I'm trying to remember the landscape of who was available back then. I remember hearing though that either it was a fan theory or an original plan that didn't come to fruition, but if he was capable, Jake the Snake would have been fantastic and would have been a true 'Holy ****' moment.

Vince ended up being fine and gave a memorable reveal for sure, but based on the way things had been built up to that point it didn't really make sense even in the 'Vince's elaborate schemes to screw over Austin' sense. The buildup was great, but the reveal fell flat because it just went right back to Austin/McMahon sort of like the way everything always ended up leading back to the nWo in WCW. Or more modernly the way Agents of SHIELD had Ward as like the forever villain (haven't seen the new season yet so no spoilers for people who do watch).

HBK would have been good too had he not been a pill head at the time.

Does anyone have a good resource for "best of..." lists for different superstars or storylines? I've been trying to get more familiar with some of the WCW/nWo and ECW era stuff that I missed out on but don't have much of a clue where to start. I've found a couple "top 10" lists and WWE just published (on Friday) a "Top 100" all-time list but I didn't know if there was a single great resource for this kind of thing.

Man, don't kill my memories lol. But, I guess you're right. When talking about why it's my favorite angle, honestly I never even think about the two in the middle of it; Austin/McMahon. I always think about stuff like how it involved the best/darkest Taker, formation of the ministry into the corporate ministry, the nice swerve with the video of McMahon saying he'll watch the reveal in the back, and planting the seeds for the McMahon-Helmsley era. But man, it's hard to get mad at more McMahon/Austin because it was so damn entertaining at the time.
