    Re: WWE Network Discussion Thread

I've made it to the Smackdown three days before Wrestlemania X8, right after the nWo debuted.

Man, I forgot how hard they tried to make Hogan a heel, including smashing a semi into The People's Ambulance with The Rock inside and people still cheered him.

It's just crazy to think that I'm a week-ish from when Brock Lesnar debuted and a few months from the debut of Randy Orton and John Cena, three future HOFs who are closing in on 40. All of this taking place 15 years ago. Wow.

TheShiz - I agree with you. JR is the GOAT to me, because his delivery, especially if it involved Austin in a main event match or a major heel going over, was unmatched.

Edit: Late 2001-2002, forget how awesome and absolutely hilarious Booker T was.

I'm almost done with WWE 1998 but still only in May 1998 for WCW. My quest to watch from May 96 will probably never be complete. And I skipped 95% of every show that I have "watched".

You're better than me with WCW. I can't watch those shoes straight through after about 3 attempts.

WCW was far easier to watch in 1997 than WWE was for me.

Really? 97 WWF is pretty classic year to most.

It was good but 1997 was WCW's best year. It wasn't until mid-1998 when WWE really separated themselves from WCW.

Call me crazy, but I never felt HBK/Razor set the bar for ladder matches. I believe Hardyz and Edge/Christian from No Mercy 99 did.

I agree and disagree. When it comes to singles Ladder match I feel they did set the bar. But when it came to tag team action clearly the Hardyz and E/C set that bar.

Just two different types of match when you throw more folks in the ring.

For me personally, I felt they set the bar because of all the new, original things they came up with to do with the ladder. Downward Spiral, Neckbreaker, seasaw etc. Before all you had was maybe a suplex, a splash and a battering ram.

If you go back now, yeah.

If you watched it as it was happening, it was mind blowing at the time.

Same goes for Savage/Steamboat from WM3. The match still holds up as a good match, but it's nowhere near as mind blowing as it was back then. Hell just watch the other matches from WM3 and you'll see why it was so crazy at the time.

Even comparing Razor/Michaels to Hart/Michaels ladder match, I felt that Hart/Michaels was superior.

The Bret/HBK holds up pretty well for sure, and when you think about the fact that it was basically a one off, it makes you wonder what they could have done with months and months of house shows to try different things out. The WM10 benefits from the fact that they had time to try plan it out on the road, and it was the first one at a major PPV.

I put all those tag ladder matches in a different category, because those were more about bravery and irresponsibly dangerous/insane spots.

That's why I hold the No Mercy 99 in high regard. That match didn't have insane spots except for maybe the seasaw which they both covered pretty well.

Agreed - 97-99 was my favorite time period in wrestling.

So, to piggyback off my last post, I finished up WM X8 and decided to stop there...and it felt as sinking and depressing as completing a TV series, lol.

For me, after X8 with Rocky and Austin eventually leaving, the brand split and H beginning his domination on Raw late 2002 and the shows and PPV cards becoming littered with guys I didn't really care about, it was just meh for the most part. Evolution, Deadman Undertaker, Hollywood Rock and a few other wrestlers/storylines helped keep my interest.

I still watched WWE regularly until about 2013ish, but I wasn't as invested as a youngin' as I was from 97-01. So to me, I don't have the desire to revisit those days, at least right now.

Thank you for letting me get that of my chest, y'all.

I would definitely check out wwf 2000. To me it was the best year of the attitude era as far as storylines and ringwork.
