Re: The Career of Bryan Hurst (MLB 14)
June 2, 2014, 3 am
This was the moment he had been waiting for his whole life. He had saved the Starship Enterprise, destroyed the robot Cylons and given the Rebels their greatest victory over the Empire. To the victor goes the spoils of war.
"Kiss me, Bryan Skywalker," said the beautiful Padmé Amidala.
He leaned in closer to her enticing lips. But he heard something distant, a shrill in the night sky over Naboo.
"There is a disturbance in the Force. I can feel it," said Amidala.
He could feel it, too. What was it?
"Baby, baby, baby oooh. Like baby, baby, baby nooo"
It sounded like ... like Justin Bieber?
"No, my love," he said moving his lips closer to hers. "It is nothing it is time for us to-"
She leaned away. "There it is again."
"BABY! BABY! BABY!"
**
Bryan Hurst awoke with his arms hugged around his pillow. His cell phone was flashing on the bedside table. He vaguely remembered changing the ring tone to Justin Bieber to annoy his manager.
Who was calling him in the middle of the night?
He picked up the phone and heard a voice screaming.
"We are so proud of you. I woke up the entire neighbourhood and told them the good news."
He recognized his mother's voice. She was talking so fast he couldn't understand a thing she was saying. It was one giant run on sentence.
"I woke up Linda MacArthur. You remember her? The mother with the two sons who are a lawyer and a doctor! I said who is laughing at who now. Who is laughing now. Who has the better son? I never like her. I didn't want to rub it in her face too much."
Bryan thought his mother sounded like a maniac. Somebody must have died. Yes, that would turn her into a babbling fool.
"Mom, what's wrong. What happened? Bryan asked. He realized he sounded groggy.
"Nothing is wrong. Everything is wonderful. Your dad is so excited he has already packed. Against the Blue Jays of all teams! You know that's his favourite team. His loyalties are going to be torn. Don't worry we'll be there. We'll be cheering you with all our voices. We'll be like: BRYAN! BRYAN!"
He heard his mother clapping on the phone in rhythm.
"Calm down. Calm down. What is going on there?" Bryan said.
"We can't calm down. We are so excited for you." his mother said.
"Why is dad packing? Are you guys getting divorced?" Bryan said. His mother's yelling had him wide awake now.
"I do hate long car rides with your dad since he is a terrible driver. But we're not getting divorced. We're driving to Detroit to see you play against the Blue Jays," she said.
"Mom, what the hell are you talking about?" he leaned up on the bed.
"You don't know do you? You we're called up by the Tigers about three hours ago."
Hurst dropped the phone on the floor and walked over to the computer. He had gone to sleep at 9 pm.
"Hello, Bryan? Bryan?"
There it was in a e-mail to him from Detroit Tigers assistant general manager Al Avila
Four years he had waited for this from the moment he was drafted by the Yankees. It had seem like a lifetime ago. He was finally going to The Show.
A bit belated, but a thoroughly meaningful congratulations! After four long years, Bryan Hurst is going to The Show.Comment
