It didn't take me long to get sent into action as we are facing the Colorado Rockies in my first spring training game. I come in to start the bottom of the 9th with the White Sox leading, 3-1, and I get hit pretty good. I allow one run on two hits and pick up my first save for the spring.

    Code:
                   1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E

I'm back in two days later as the White Sox are playing the Arizona Diamondbacks. I enter the game in the bottom of the 9th and pitch a 1-2-3 inning to preserve a 2-0 win. I even made a play in the field as I caught a popup near the mound on the third base side.

      Code:
                     1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E

It was over a week before I was back on the mound. The White Sox are on the road again as they take on the San Diego Padres. I enter the game in the bottom of the 9th with the White Sox leading, 3-2. After giving up a single to the lead off batter, I field a bunt and got the batter out at first. Two batters later, I have my third save of the spring as the White Sox win, 3-2.
        Code:
                       1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E

I am back on the mound for the second straight night and I am in front of the crowd at the White Sox spring training home for the first time. I certainly didn't give the fans something good as I allow the tying run to score as I am belted for 3 hits and one run by the Seattle Mariners. Jim Thome belted a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 9th to give the White Sox the win, 8-6, and I get my first blown save and my first win on the same night.

We are on the road and are facing the Texas Rangers as I make my third appearance in three straight nights. I got the first batter to ground out then after allowing a single, I get the next two batters to pick up my 4th save in 5 tries.

I haven't pitched in about a half a week so I am back on the hill tonight. The White Sox are back at the Arizona Diamondbacks' training camp and I enter the game to start the bottom of the 9th with the White Sox ahead, 2-1. I get them to go down 1-2-3 and picked up my first strikeout as I got Justin Upton to swing and miss on a 72-mph curveball after throwing two straight 4-seamers in the upper 80s.
              Code:

It's another five days between games as the White Sox are on the road to face the San Francisco Giants. I enter the game to start the bottom of the 9th to hold a 2-run lead. I set down the Giants, 1-2-3, for my 6th save and I also got my second strikeout, fanning Dan Ortmeier.

                    Thanks.

I hope that I don't end up having the same problem that I did with Nolan Ryan. He was out of baseball for some of the time before things started happening while with the Dodgers.

Spring training is about to end as the Diamondbacks are here at our camp. I enter the game to start the top of the 9th with the White Sox leading, 1-0. I give up three straight singles, the last two on bunts, to load the bases with no one out. The next batter flies out to tie the game and then I get a double play grounder to end the inning. I was offered a 1-year contract by the White Sox for $115,000 and asked them if I could have a second year added for a total of $230,000. They agreed and told me to report to Birmingham in Double-A. I will be starting out in the bullpen.

I arrived at the Birmingham Barons manager's office and met with him and the pitching coach.

I am going to be in the setup role and I was given four goals to reach over the next three series.

                          My Goals
                          1. Increase arm accuracy over the next 3 series
                          2. Increase arm strength over the next 3 series

                            4/6/08

Tonight is my first official appearance as a pro.

The Tennessee Smokies are in town and I enter the game to start the top of the 8th inning with the Barons leading, 3-2. I got pounded as I allow 5 hits and 3 runs, including a 3-run blast, in the 8th and then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning. We came back with a run in the bottom of the 8th and then two more in the bottom of the 9th as the Barons won, 6-5, and I pick up my first official minor league win and blown save.

Welcome to life as a pro, Rich!

I'm back on the mound as the Barons are on the road to take on the Chattanooga Lookouts. I enter the game at the start of the bottom of the 8th with the Barons in front, 3-2. I pitch a 1-2-3 eighth inning, including striking out the first batter, and our closer comes on in the 9th as the Barons win, 4-2.
