      February 7th, 2006

The Oklahoma Sooners (0-1) started off their 2006 season with a disappointing loss to Sacramento State (1-0) in a one run game.

Oklahoma scored in the 7th inning to close the gap to one and had a bases loaded opportunity in the 8th inning that they couldn't convert.

Sacramento State would jump out to an early lead in 3rd inning when Helm hit a 2 run home run. They would also get another run in the 5th inning. Oklahoma would put up a run in the 6th and 7th innings but failed to score in the 8th and 9th.

Sacramento State's Helm went 1-3 with a home run, 2 RBI's and 2 runs. Webb went perfect on the day going 3-3 in the Hornet's opener.

Freshman phenom Coffie went 2-4 on the day and drove in 1 of the 2 Oklahoma runs in the loss. Pitcher Reichert picked up the loss but had a decent game going 6.0 innings giving up 7 hits, 3 runs, while striking out 6.

Oklahoma and Sacramento State close out their series tomorrow with Dennis taking the mound for Oklahoma against Cadena and the Hornets.

The Oklahoma Sooners (1-1) Bounced back against Sacramento State (1-1) yesterday afternoon by posting a 5-4 come behind win. The Sooners scored 4 runs combined in the 8th and 9th innings to overcome an early 4-1 deficit and get the victory.

"It really shows the character of these guys to come from behind and pick up a victory. I know I didn't want to get swept by this team and I think the players felt the same way and it showed throughout their play during the game," said coach jct32 after the game.

Junior Al Wood led the Sooners offensively going 3-5 with 3 RBIs. Freshman catcher Emmanuel Hess also had a good game going 3-4 with a run and raising his average to .500. Starter John Dennis didn't have the game that he wanted but didn't leave after the 7th inning with a terrible game. Dennis went 7 innings giving up 7 hits, 4 runs, and 1 walk while giving a great strikeout effort with 8 on the books when it was all finished.

Oklahoma will get two days off and will face New Meixco (1-1) on Saturday with the scheduled match-up to be Ryan Friday (0-0, 0.00) against Evan Quon (0-0, 0.00).

Oklahoma continued to struggle early in the season as they dropped a game to New Mexico on Satruday in a 10 inning affair.

The Sooners gave up 2 home runs in the game and once again mounted a late inning comeback. However, it wouldn't be enough as tired reliever Andrew Froemming gave up 5 runs in the 10th inning. In what will be a controversial decision, coach jct32 left in Froemming who lost complete confidence after two errors by Freshman right fielder Tim Coffie.

"I can't stop beating myself up. I'm given a great opportunity and I didn't take advantage of that," said the Freshman Coffie after the game. Coffie seemed to be visibly upset after the game. Though, there wasn't any bat throwing or releasing his rage upon the cooler. Coffie just sat in the corner and didn't speak a word or even look up. It is obvious that the young man is crushed for letting his team down as he so believes it to be.

Junior R.J. Lang would be the leader for the Sooners as he went 3-4 with 2 RBI's and a run. Junior third baseman Ryan Westphal would also add an RBI on his only hit of the game going 1-4. Junior shortstop Chris Gatlin was also a surprise as he went 3-4 with a double and raised his average to .500. Stater Evan Quon went 6.1 innings and only gave up 4 hits with 3 runs and striking out 3 Lobo batters.

The Lobos will try to close out the series against the Sooners on Sunday sending Chip Chambliss (0-1, 5.06 ERA) on the mound against Matt Reichert (0-1, 4.50 ERA)

Oklahoma (2-2) finished up another close game by squeaking pass New Mexico (2-2) in a one run ballgame, the third game the Sooners have either lost or won by a run so far this year.

A strong pitcher's duel ended in the 9th inning when junior DH A.J. Rapp hit a bases loaded single in the bottom of the 9th to break a 1-1 tie. The Sooners got the party started after Ryan Westphal singled and every subsequent batter after him singled until he crossed the plate. The most surprising fact about the comeback is that it shouldn't of happened. Twice the New Mexico pitcher missed a slow roller right to him and allowed all the runners to reach safely, including the game winning hit which would have been an easy play at home if fielded cleanly.

"Sometimes you get the breaks, the kid was nervous and it showed when he missed two grounders right to him. These are amateur athletes not professionals and they are going to make some mistakes, and fortunately for us it allowed us to win the ballgame," coach jct32 told the press after the game.

Freshman Tim Coffie bounced back after a rough game yesterday and went 2-4 with a double. Junior R.J. Lang has hit a hot streak and went 3-4 in the game with 2 doubles and a run, raising his average to .529 this season. Starter Matt Reichert went 7 innings and struck out 5, only giving up 1 run in a no-decision. Junior Garrett Robitaille will get the win after 2 innings of relief and one strikeout.

Oklahoma will play its next game on Tuesday in New Orleans against the New Orleans University Privateers with John Dennis (0-0, 5.14 ERA) taking up the hill against M. Yates (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

Thanks, it's really frustrating that I can't win a series. The worst part is I should probably be undefeated right now. Lots of 1 run loses and the one that wasn't a one run loss I should of pulled my reliever and still won.

The Oklahoma Sooners (3-2) dominated a weak New Orleans (1-2) ball club yesterday in a 4-0 shutout in New Orleans.

Freshman John Dennis earned the first shutout of his young career going all 9 innings with 2 hits and 4 strikeouts. The young pitcher worked the strike zone and most of his outs came from ground balls. The Sooners also exploded offensively and scored 4 runs on 16 hits.

"I can ask for a thing here and there, mainly my complaint is 16 hits and only 4 runs but I don't want to beat the kids down this early. There is a lot of ball left to play and this was a very promising game," said coach jct32 after the game when encounter by the press.

The other star of the show would be freshman catcher Emmanuel Hess. Hess went 4-4 with a run scored in the victory. The Sooners also had a flurry of players that got two hits during the game including Westphal, Coffie, Luisi, Mullen, and Gatlin.

The Sooners will try to get their first sweep of the season tomorrow against New Orleans as Evan Quon (0-0, 4.26 ERA) will take the hill against G. Marte (0-1, 5.14 ERA).

The Oklahoma Sooners (4-2) have had some struggles offensively but showed no remorse when they went up against the New Orleans Privateers (1-3) on February 16th after the game on the 15th was rained out.

The Sooners had some extra time to prepare and it seemed to show as they routed New Orleans 7-3 after being down 0-2 in the first inning. The driving force behind the offense was the designated hitter A.J. Rapp who went 3-4 with a double and 4 RBI's.

"I haven't started off real hot which is really embarrassing because my only job is to hit. Coach has been working with me in the cages and it is help a lot. I'm just glad I could have a game like this and hope to use it as a launchpad for the season," said an excited Rapp after the game.

Freshman Tim Coffie went 1-5 with a run but he gathered up another error in right field making it 4 for the year.

"I can't stand it one bit, I have so much potential and I'm embarrassing myself out there. I know I have 4 years left but I don't want to say well I will fix it next year. I'm not promised tomorrow, it's not that uncommon to tear something in your knee or in your shoulder and then find your have a regular 9 to 5 like your dad. I need to step my game up, plain and simple," said a frustrated Coffie after the game.

"The kid loves the game and puts a lot of pressure on himself. He's good and he wants to be the best. He has the drive to be the best also, so we are going to keep working with him on his defense and hopefully we can make him into an all-american that will lead our team to the world series," said coach jct32 after the game.

Junior Evan Quon threw 6 innings off the mound and gave up 10 hit and 3 runs. Quon also struck out three and had enough support from his offense to win his first game of the year.

The Sooners will travel back to Norman to take on Portland (1-3) on Saturday. Chuck Touchatt (0-1, 13.50 ERA) will take the mound for the Pilots against Matt Reichert (0-1, 2.77 ERA) for the Sooners in game 1.

Wow you are really hitting the ball well early on in the year. It's always nice when 9 hits is a season low. Keep it up and following

We are, but they are almost all singles. Like I said 16 hits is nice but only 4 runs from it is not very good if we want to make it deep into the tournament.

Thanks for following. I follow all of those NCAA basketball dynasties you guys have over there and if you can't tell that where I get my layout style from.

The Oklahoma Sooners came into the series against the Portland Pilots looking for some easy victories and they almost found that for both games.

In the first game the Sooners scored 6 runs in the first inning and then later tacked on two more to get a total of 8 for the game. Almost close enough for a run rule win in the 7th. The reason they were able to get so close was because of pitcher Matt Reichert who threw a complete game shutout with 7 hits and 1 strikeout. The win was Reichert's first of the year and evened his record at 1-1. Emmanuel Hess also had a good game in game 1 and went 4-4 with 3 RBI's.

The second game was much closer for the Sooners. Oklahoma would score 2 early runs but in the 5th inning Portland would score 2 runs to tie up the game. The game would stay tied up and close until the 8th inning when the Sooners would break out and score 4 runs to pull away. 3 of those would come off a bases loaded double by Ryan Westphal. Westphal was the best hitter for Sooners going 3-5 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI's.

The Oklahoma Sooners will play UCLA in their next series on February 21st and 22nd.
