Miracle In New York| The GM Career Of Josh Rudd [MLB 12]

Hey guys, this is my first MLB 'chise on this site. I really hope you guys enjoy it, as I see we don't have too many out there yet. I will be using the New York (Failure) Mets, and try to rebuild them and make them a better team in the future. Josh Rudd will be taking over the front office of the team. I've always enjoyed making moves and acting like a GM. Hopefully it works out very well with the Mets.

I will be posting weekly recaps, as it's very difficult to just post one game at a time in the MLB. I'll try to make some Around the MLB format, every week or month. I don't expect our team to be too competitive the first year, so I'll take that year as a rebuilding year. For the MLB draft and offseason, I'll be posting news on all teams. There might be a very GM interviews, but I wouldn't expect many.

For this franchise, I will be using updated offseason rosters (link down below). They will have all the free agent signings and trades, like in real life. I will play the year like it's 2013. The Mets will be in full rebuild mode. I hope you guys enjoy!

New York Mets 2012 Season Review

The Mets ended the 2011 season with a 77-85 record and a fourth-place finish in the NL East. They trailed the division-winning Philadelphia Phillies by 25 games.

The mood heading into 2012 was not good as the full effects of the Wilpons' involvement with Bernie Madoff were taking hold on the club. The departure of Jose Reyes and the lack of big-name signings gave Mets fans little hope. The media predicted that the Mets would be one of the worst teams in baseball, and the expectations for the team were zilch.

Then the Mets went out and surprised many. The club's first-half play made even us cynical Mets fans believe that perhaps miracles can happen.

Then the All-Star break came, and the Mets that we were expecting early on came out. They played poorly, and the losses kept mounting.

Now that the season has wrapped up, it’s time to take a look back and see how the Mets performed in relation to my predictions.

              Mets 2012 MVP: R.A. Dickey

Back in 2010, R.A. Dickey was the first man cut from the New York Mets spring training. A mere two years later, he was not only the clear cut ace of the staff for the Mets, but he is a serious Cy Young contender.

What didn't Dickey do this year? For the first time in his career R.A. Dickey won 20 games, which is no small feat on a team that only won 74 games all season. Dickey's 2.78 ERA and 1.05 WHIP were good for second in the NL and his 230 strikeouts led the National League.

Those numbers are of course impressive on their own, but factor in that he is 37 and throws a knuckleball and they are almost unfathomable.

Dickey also had one of the most dominant stretches of starting pitching this season that we've seen in years. From May 27th through June 18th, Dickey won all five games he started, allowed no earned runs, tossed three complete games and became the first National League pitcher since Jim Tobin in 1944 to throw back to back one-hitters.

As for the Mets specifically, no player was more valuable than R.A. Dickey. Wins aside, Dickey provided leadership and consistency throughout the season, both when the team was winning, and more importantly, when the team was falling apart.
              Honorable Mentions
              :

David Wright: Was the hottest hitter in baseball for a time back in May and overall was the only consistent offensive presence on the Mets, despite his average coming back down to Earth and settling at .306.

Ike Davis: For a guy who went into hibernation for the first two months of the season, his final stats weren't half bad, including leading the team with 32 home runs.

Jonathon Niese: After inking a big offseason contract, he won 13 games and blossomed into a more mature, legitimate major league pitcher.

Mets 2012 Biggest Surprise: Ruben Tejada

Mets fans were dealt a serious blow over the offseason, when longtime fan favorite Jose Reyes decided to depart with the only franchise he's ever been with, in favor of the revamped Miami Marlins. This left a gaping hole offensively and defensively that many Mets fans thought could not possibly be filled.

              Enter Ruben Tejada.

The 22 year old shortstop was told the moment Reyes left that shortstop would be his spot this year, and he rose to the occasion all season. Not only did Tejada fill the void left at shortstop, but he even proved himself to be a more than capable leadoff man—something most critics said that he couldn't do.

Impressively, Tejada's stats managed to stay neck and neck with Reyes all season. Despite playing 46 less games due to injury, Tejada hit 25 doubles with a .333 OBP and a .289 average. Compare that to Reyes who had 37 doubles, .347 OBP, and a .287 average, and it's safe to say that Tejada filled in admirably for his expensive counterpart.

What impressed me the most about Tejada, though, was his defense. Reyes was known for his incredible range and cannon arm, yet Tejada throughout the season made spectacular plays and actually finished the season with six less errors than Reyes.

Obviously, the triples and stolen bases weren't there compared to Reyes, but they never were expected to be.

Overall, Tejada was put in a situation where he was supposed to replace the reigning NL batting champ. He was supposed to fail, but instead, he shined, and I believe that Tejada's success in making Mets fans not lament the loss of Jose Reyes was the biggest surprise of 2012.
              Honorable Mentions
              :

Daniel Murphy: We all knew Murphy would hit, finishing with a .291 average, but his transformation into a bona fide second baseman was a pleasant, and frankly, unexpected surprise for most Mets fans.

Scott Hairston: He played the way we all expected Jason Bay to play for three years now. Who penciled in Scott Hairston for 20 home runs? Anyone? No? I thought so.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis: He started to fall off at the end before being injured in the minors, but for a good chunk of the season, Captain Kirk was a starting outfielder, showing great range in the field and a solid bat at the dish.

Lowest Point of the Mets 2012 Season: Blowing It Against the Nationals (Twice)

All season, the Mets had trouble with the upstart Nationals, and in the end, their struggles against Washington led to their undoing.

Going into their July 17th matchup with the Nationals, the Mets were already going in the wrong direction. They had opened the second half of the season with three straight losses to the Atlanta Braves and the season already felt on the verge of spiraling out of control.

The Nats had taken a 2-0 lead into the 9th inning and it seemed as if the Mets were getting ready to drop yet another game, putting them a solid seven games behind Washington.

Then, pinch hitter extraordinaire Jordany Valdespin, drove in a replay upheld three run bomb to give the Mets the lead.

Bobby Parnell came in to try and nail down the potential season saving victory, but with two outs in the 9th, he allowed a Danny Espinosa single to tie the game. The Mets again took the lead in the 10th off a Josh Thole double, but the madness was just beginning.

The normally reliable Tim Byrdak was roughed up, allowing rookie sensation Bryce Harper to tie the game with an RBI triple and loaded up the bases with only one out. Byrdak got Adam LaRoche to hit into a fielder's choice at the plate before he was pulled for Pedro Beato.

Beato proceeded to lose the game, not on a base hit, but a wild pitch.

This game hurt the Mets on a whole host of levels and it was the punch that the Amazin's never seemed to recover from for the rest of the season. Yes, the game put them in a deep hole if they wanted to win the division, but it did much more than that.

It showed the weaknesses of the bullpen. It showed that even when the Mets put on some of their late game magic, it still wouldn't be enough. It showed that the Mets may be headed for yet another second half collapse.

Worst of all, blowing two leads in two innings to a division rival, especially losing on a wild pitch, was just downright demoralizing and was really the final nail in the coffin for any optimism people had about the Mets in 2012.

              Dishonorable Mentions
              :

June 5th: Another game with the Nationals, another three leads blown, another extra inning loss. This time, the festivities featured an error filled 10th inning and another two out game winner from Bryce Harper.

Subway Series: The Mets were embarrassed by the crosstown rival Yankees this year, losing five of their six games with the Bombers, featuring everything from blowouts to walk offs.

August 22nd: Probably the ugliest, most embarrassing game the Mets played all season, and part of a four game sweep from the lowly Rockies that showed that the Mets had truly hit rock bottom.

Highest Point of Mets 2012 Season: "NoHan" Santana -

What more can I say about this game that I haven't already said?

After 8,019 regular season games, on June 1st, 2012, Johan Santana threw the first no-hitter in New York Mets history.

The game had everything that you could want in a no hitter.

It had controversy. Carlos Beltran lined a ball that looked like it hit chalk for a sixth inning double, but it was ruled a foul ball.

It had a fantastic play. Mike Baxter joined Endy Chavez and Ron Swoboda in Mets lore as he crashed into the wall in the seventh to rob Yadier Molina of a sure hit, breaking his ribs in the process.

It had karma. The losing pitcher was Adam Wainwright, who ended Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS by striking out Carlos Beltran, who was the victim of an umpire's call to preserve the no-no. Yadier Molina, who broke New York's heart with the game winning home run in that same NLCS, was the victim of Mike Baxter's legendary moment.

Most of all, it had drama. Terry Collins battled with his emotions all night due to Johan Santana's insane pitch count in his first season coming off major shoulder surgery, but left him out there to chase history. Santana finished with 134 pitches.

I think I speak for most Mets fans when I say that I never thought a no-hitter was going to happen. After so many great pitchers came and went and after so many close calls, it just felt like the Mets were doomed to never post a zero in the opponent's hit column. But when it did finally happen, it felt surreal.

Being born in 1990, I've only seen the Mets in one World Series, and I've never seen them win a championship, but I have to imagine that if the Amazin's do ever win one in my lifetime, it will feel a lot like how this game felt.

For Mets fans, watching Johan Santana throw a no hitter was absolute euphoria and it is the undisputed best moment of the 2012 New York Mets season.

              Honorable Mentions
              :

May 7th: The first game of what would be the first Mets sweep of Philadelphia in Philly since 2006 was highlighted by Jordany Valdespin's first big league hit: a go-ahead, three run home run in the top of the 9th against Jonathon Papelbon.

              June 18th
: The Orioles fell victim to R.A. Dickey's second one hitter in a row, featuring 13 strikeouts from the knuckleballer. This game put Dickey in rarefied air in terms of consecutive one hitters and also skyrocketed him into the forefront of the Cy Young race.

September 27th: R.A. Dickey became the first Met since Frank Viola in 1990 to win 20 games and the first knuckleballer to accomplish the feat since Phil Niekro in 1980. This game featured a major milestone of Dickey, as well as one of the only real reasons for Mets fans to celebrate throughout the entire second half.

Re: Miracle In New York| The GM Career Of Josh Rudd [MLB 12]

Fred Wilpon Resigns, Josh Rudd To Take Owner, And GM Spot

Today, The Mets and former Owner Frank Wilpon announced, that Frank Wilpon will be resigning from his position. No one had expected Wilpon to resign this quickly. Shortly after that they announced the hiring of Josh Rudd. Rudd will not only serve as the Mets owner, but he will be taking the duties of being the General Manager of the team. We haven't heard any news why Wilpon decided to sell the team.

Wilpon bought a one-percent stake in the Mets in 1980, when Charles Shipman Payson sold the team, with Doubleday & Co. holding the remaining interest. In 1986, Doubleday president Nelson Doubleday, Jr. sold off his company, and he and Wilpon each bought a 50 percent stake in the Mets to become full partners. In 2002, the Wilpon Family purchased the remaining 50% of the Mets from Doubleday for $135 million. Wilpon served as president of the team between 1980 to 2002, as Chief Executive Officer since 1980 and as Chairman of the Board since 2003. Wilpon currently serves as Chairman of Sterling Equities. His son, Jeff, is the COO of the Mets and executive vice president of Sterling. Wilpon is a 1958 graduate of the University of Michigan.

Wilpon's will always been known for his famous "scandal". Wilpon was one of the investors who invested a significant amount of money with Bernard Madoff which was lost when the Ponzi scheme collapsed in December 2008. It was reported that Wilpon had "lost" about $700 million because of Madoff, which has led to speculation that he may be forced to sell the team. As a result in December 2010, Wilpon was named in a lawsuit filed by Irving Picard on behalf of the victims of Madoff's investment scandal and on January 28, 2011 Wilpon issued a statement seeking “one or more strategic partners” interested in buying 20 to 25% interest in the Mets to offset pending losses due to litigation (which may total up to $1 billion). Wilpon and his partner and brother-in-law Saul Katz were involved in another Ponzi scheme which was orchestrated by Samuel Israel III and they were forced to pay $13 million to investors when Israel's hedge fund collapsed. It was revealed that Wilpon utilized Madoff in running the Mets' finances. It became a common practice to negotiate deferred money into players' contracts and then put that money with Madoff to invest because they were able to make money for themselves before paying players. In an interview while in prison, Madoff claimed that Wilpon "knew nothing" about his Ponzi scheme. After it was reported that Major League Baseball loaned the Mets $25 million in November 2010 to shore up their finances, Wilpon is now willing to sell up to a 49% ownership stake of the team at a cost of $200 million. On March 19, 2012, Wilpon agreed to settle Picard's lawsuit for $162 million.

On the other side, Josh Rudd hasn't had any experience ever running a MLB team. There was never any reports that he would be taking over the team. Rudd (25 years old) now becomes the youngest owner or general manager to ever take over in the MLB. Thursdays, when the Met's announced Rudd's hiring, there was a lot of mixed reaction. Most fans where very happen that Wilpon left, but they where also worried about having Josh Rudd running their team now. Rudd said "Wilpon did a pretty good job running his team, but now it's my turn to take over. I wish (Fred) Wilpon the best in the future, for what ever he does. As for the Mets, we will be headed in a full rebuilding direction. I will have a players and coaching meeting tomorrow, to see where we stand right now. No one's job is safe, as of right now." This Met's team right now has some interesting parts, but they will need to build from the ground up. It'll be interesting to see what moves Rudd makes this offseason.

                        New York Mets Offseason Preview

                        Areas of need:

Outfield: The Mets' outfielders, collectively, had the league's second-worst OPS last season (.236/.308/.384). The Met's projected lineup will be Lucas Duda in left field, Kirk Nieuwenhuis in center field and Mike Baxter in right field. That's not exactly major league-quality, and Rudd knows it, even quipping, "We have a outfield?" when speaking to reporters in early November. In a perfect world, it'd be totally remade. The Mets may have to make due with adding two players there and running with Duda in left. At the very least, the GM adds platoon-types or guys who have been in part-time roles but want to prove themselves with the everyday job. At the most, the Mets "splurge" on guys like Ryan Ludwick, Cody Ross and/or Shane Victorino.

Catcher: The other black hole on the roster is at catcher, where the collection sported an MLB-worst OPS last season (.218/.281/.286). Josh Thole is still in town, but he's regressed over the past three seasons (1.6 WAR to replacement-level 0.1 last year). He's also not very good against lefties, so the ideal add at catcher would be a right-hander. The Mets may have to think outside the box here with a trade because the free-agent catching options aren't especially strong.

Bullpen: This is not a priority area at the winter meetings; Rudd will likely gauge the reliever market and sign a few guys later on in the offseason, but he has other more pressing needs to worry about. We're not saying the bullpen doesn't need him though. The Mets had the second-worst ERA (4.65) in the majors last season. Frank Francisco is still in town, while Jon Rauch and Ramon Ramirez are out. New York does have a few interesting arms who could work in the bullpen.

Players who could be on the block

3B David Wright : The franchise player, said to Rudd he didn't want to talk a extension until next offseason. David Wright is one of the best players in the league with a career 301/.381/.506 slash line. If Rudd does trade Wright, he will surely get a huge offer. There has already been fourteen to fifteen offers that Rudd has got in less than 28 hours. Rudd hasn't came out and said if he was interested in any of the deals, but I'm sure at least one of the teams where over paying for him. It should be interesting to see if Wright stays, or gets dealt this offseason.

                        SP R.A. Dickey
: The Mets were reportedly "stunned" to learn 40-year-old Andy Pettitte received a $12 million deal from the Yankees, so they upped their two-year offer to Dickey. Until Dickey signs on the dotted line, the front office has every reason to find a trade partner. There are reportedly six or seven teams that will meet with Alderson in Nashville about Dickey. It's hard to believe a trick-pitch 38-year-old could net enough value, but Dickey is coming off a Cy Young year and teams are desperate for pitching. There's big-time risk here: Dickey wants to be in New York, he's willing to sign below market value and New York's rotation would take a significant hit. That's why Alderson is paid to make those decisions and not the fans.

SP Jon Niese: There is some thought that Niese could actually command more in the trade market: He's only 26, more proven, a lefty and signed to a very team-friendly deal (he signed a five-year, $25.5 million pact he last April.) The contract aspect is what will make him so valuable on the market: Niese has settled in as a solid No. 3 starter and he's controlled for most of his prime seasons. He finished last year with a 3.40 ERA, 7.33 K/9 and 190 innings pitched. Starting pitching is an area of strength, so there's more of a reason (or comfort level) to move one of these two arms.

Trade that could work: Niese for Dexter Fowler

The Mets need a center fielder. The Rockies need pitching. It seems like this could at least be the framework for a deal. Fowler is arbitration-eligible for the second time in his career (he made $2.35 million last year) and Niese is a cost-controlled lefty. The Mets may balk at Fowler's splits away from Coors Field -- .295/.395/.487 at home to .248/.331/.367 -- but Fowler is coming off his best season: .300/.389/.474 with 13 home runs, 12 steals and 72 runs, worth 2.9 wins, and he's 26 and talented. Not saying this will happen, but it's worth mentioning in this hot stove season.
