Chicago Cubs: Time to Break that Curse

Hey guys, most of you probably don't know me... but who cares! I'm posting my dynasty anyways, and if you've made it here then you will probably have a fun ride following this... or I hope so... I wish I could make this as detailed as some of the other dynasties on here... but I just can't.

    Basics
    Playing on All Star
    TNK's Sliders
Going to try and be as realistic as I can
I'll attempt a storyline but doubt I will succeed

I won't be playing many games as I'll be looking at trades, waivers, free agency and all that good stuff, so expect a quick season 1 guys. I'll be playing 50% of the games in season 2 though, and will update mostly every series.

Re: Chicago Cubs: Time to Break that Curse

"Ugh... we can't have another unsuccessful season...." Said Jed Hoyer as he sat by himself in his office
"R-r-r-r-r-ring ring" the phone suddenly rang. It was Theo(Epstien), Jed answered.
    "Yes Theo?"
"Jed, we cant have another unsuccessful season. We need to make some moves and start rebuilding-- if we don't get anything done this season Jed, we may be... looking at some options for front office spots..." Theo had hung up the phone after that
"Crap..." Jed Hoyer screamed in his office.
    ----------
    Fast foward opening day

The cubbies lineup looks like this:

    1. SS, Starlin Castro
    2. OF, David Dejusus,
    3. 1B, Anthony Rizzo
    4. OF, Alfonso Soriano
    5. OF, Nate Schierholtz/Scott Harriston(platooning)
    6. 2B, Darwin Barney
    7. 3B, Ian Stewart
    8. Weilington Castillo/Navarro(platooning)

    Pitching Rotation:
    Jeff Samardjiza
    Edwin Jackson
    Travis Wood
    Scott Baker
    Carlos Villenueva

Season starting moves and goals: Cubs will pick up Brian Wilson and sign him for two years-- this move was made by giving Wilson a cheap contract and to make the fans know we're still trying, plus, in the future he will be a great piece. Our goals are to 1. Get SPs in the A/B/C potential range to improve on future rotation. 2. Ship out any OF not named Almora, Soler, and Brett Jackson. 3. Trade an SP or two for some talent. 4. Get young MIF depth. 5. Get a good catcher.

Re: Chicago Cubs: Time to Break that Curse

As I said, I won't be playing many games.... so season 1 will go by fast!
        --------------------------

        After July:

"Theo, how do you feel about the trades you've made?"
"I feel pretty good about them and I think we will be a real competitor in a few years"
"Was it hard trading all those guys, especially 7 year Cub Alfonso Soriano"
"It's always hard, but it was best for the team, so we had to do it"

        -----------------------------
        July: The Trading month

With Soriano on the trading block he has been rumored to Pittsburg, LAA, and the Giants, but out of the three teams, he went to the Giants for a good return for the Cubs!

        Cubs trade: Alfonso Soirano
Giants trade: Chris Heston, Erik Surkamp

Harriston has been on the trading block since the beginning of the year, and was being rumored to go to Pitt, but he really went to the Angels in a deal for youn MIFer Yarbrough

        Cubs trade: Scott Harriston
        Angels trade: Alex Yarbrough

Matt Garza, the Cubs ace was not an expected canadate to be traded, but he was placed on the block anyways. Teams interested were the Phils, Reds and Nats, but he went to the Red Sox.

        Cubs trade: Matt Garza
Red Sox trade: Allen Webster, Drake Britton and Bryce Brentz

"Not a bad year... 74-88... got a lot done..." Jed Hoyer was jumping up and down in his office mumbling those words to himself for hours, until he finally got a call from the President, Theo Epstien.
"Hello Theo, how are you today!" Hoyer said, maybe a bit more excitedly then he should of.
"I'm doing just fine Jed, and your job is too. It was a successful year for us."
"Uhhhhhhhh-- thank you Mr. Epstien, a fine year indeed." Jed was astonished.. not by him keeping his job, but by the way he had said it.
"Indeed so Jed, now get ready for next year."

As the offseason begins, the Cubs have some work to do. They have a vacant spot at hitting coach, and fired their pitching coach. Though they quickly hired men, making Robin Hancock there hitting coach for 3 years, and Terry Collins the pitching coach for 3. The Cubs have retained most of their players, including Jorge Soler, (all A POT players, and all B POT prospects) and also have signed Rizzo to a 7 year, 20 MIL deal(hahahaha so cheap!)

"Hello everyone and welcome to Cubs TV! Today we have the very own cubs writer and analyst, Mr. John Crow!"
              "Thank you, thank you everyone!"
"Hello Mr. Crow, how are you today?"
              "I'm doing just fine, you?"
"Doing fine as well, but lets get to why you're here. What do you think of the Cubs offseason?"
"I think it was fantastic, they got all they're key components back, although they did lose Travis Wood. Rizzo is now locked in for 7 years, and top prospects Brett Jackson, Albert Almora and Jorge Soler are signed, and they also picked up powerful catcher Jarred Saltalamachia."
"How do you think the Cubs will perform next year?
"I think they can maybe make it over the .500 mark this year. With Soler becoming a star, and Jackson's fielding and hitting skills starting to devolop, I think they're in good shape. A lot of their AA and AAA, have raised their potential this year, moving from just end of the rotation guys, to mid-rotation guys. Baez will be I think MLB ready at the end of the year as well, I think they're in good shape to break that curse."
              "Thank you Mr. Crow!"
              "No, thank you"
              --------------------------------------------
"Mr. Epstien, what are your expectations for this year?"
"Well... every year... you win some... and you lose some, we just have to hope we win more then we lose"
              --------------------------------------------
Hey guys, on to my second season I'll be updating you guys on around 75% of the games, I kind of really wanted to get through my first season, but I'm excited for this second one. Spring training will be like the MLB, if you perform well, you get the spot and all that. I will give you guys player and record updates every 5 games through spring training, although not many box scores, as I'm not looking at how many we win or lose, only who will make the MLB squad. A lot of our C potential guys have grown into B's, including MIFer Alex Yourbrough I got in the Scott Harriston trade. This season expect 30 pages on it guys--becuase it's time to break that curse.

Re: Chicago Cubs: Time to Break that Curse

Week 1 Update: Pitching: Hey guys, the pitching here has not been great in week 1, never giving up less then 3 runs, and giving up 9+ runs twice. Allen Webster had a strong first outing then came back with a rough one giving up 10 ERs. Chris Heston hasn't been looking pretty either, with a 4.50 ERA. But Erik Surkump, another SP fighting for a rotation spot, has a 1.80 ERA and is pitching fantastic. Alex Wood, and Jose DeJusus, also fighting for spots, are also doing well, with a 1.80 ERA for wood and 2.08 for DeJusus.

Week 1 Update: Hitting: The hitting has been their though, Anthony Rizzo has 3 HRs and is batting .356, and Salty has 2 HRs. Albert Almora is showing that even though he is 19, he can play. Batting .280. Alex Yarbrough, fighting to be the utility man is hitting .308.

                Record 2-5.

Week 2 Update: Pitching: Week 2 is just like week 1, the same guys doing well and the same guys struggling.

Week 2 Update: Hitting: Darwin Barney and Willie Bloomquest are both dead cold, batting .209 and .154. Rizzo is still scowlding the ball with 6 HRs, and Salty bombed another HR as well to have 3 already. Brett Jackson and Soler are both below the .260 mark, in the mid .250's. Darnell McDonald is also making a case to be a bench player, batting .286 with 1 HR. Andres Torres was on track to make the roster, but his BA is .250.

                Record: 4-9

Week 3 Update: Pitching: The pitching still hasn't been there with Webster having an ERA of 7.13-- he was on track to have a rotation spot but his stats are showing otherwise. Chris Heston has calmed down and now has a 3.50 ERA. Surkamp still has a great .287 ERA. Drake Britton and Alberto Cabrera, both strong minor leaguers last year, both have ERA's above 7. Jose DeJusus is doing fantastic with a 1.42 ERA, and Michael Bowden lowered his 6 points, to a 3.68 ERA.

Week 3 Update: Hitting: The hitting has calmed down a bit, with Bloomquest raising his to .193 and Barney raising his to .226, Rizzo is batting .333 with 8 HRs. But Salty is hitting .211 with 3 HRs. Schierholtz and Brett Jackson are dead cold, as well as Albert Almora. Torres rose his BA to .300 and Yarbrough is dead cold. Darnell is now batting .300 and is on track to make the big leagues.

Week 4 Update: Allen Webster lowered his ERA a point to 6.75. He will likely make the roster as the 5th man in the rotation, but will have a short lease. Surkamp and Heston both will make the big league roster, and Jose DeJusus as well, as he has a 1.35 ERA. Alex wood has a 2.03 ERA and will likely make the big leagues as well. With a terrible spring for Alberto Cabrera, he will be sent to AAA, as well as Drake Britton. Bowden will be one that will be the 25th man to make it or, or the top player in AAA. On the offensive side, nothing really changed. Yarbrough pushed his average up to .280 and will likely make the roster on the bench, with Torres, McDonald, and another player TBD.

This series flew by, as the Cubs swept the 'Stros easy. Soler and Rizzo were fantastic in the series, both with multiple Extra base hits, and the pitching was FANTASTIC. The cubs are off to a hot start!

It was a tough loss for the Cubs as they had so many chances and left what seemed like a million men on base. Springer got CS with the game on the line in the 9th and the whole teams confidence went out with that. The cubs now sit at 4-2 after winning game 2 10-4 and losing game 3 5-3.

                          BAKER PITCHES 9 INNING GEM

                          Game Recap:

Inning 1: It was 1, 2 3 in the first for the Cubs as they just couldn't stay dsiciplined. Castro and Barney swung at a combined 4 pitches in the dirt.
Pitt had two hits but couldn't capitlize as they left with nothing.

Inning two: Soler leading off the inning, as he is batting .476 takes a close pitch then swings at a high one. 1-1 the count and Soler crushes one to shortstop and can't beat it out. Schierholtz batting .350 now up, takes two pitches in the dirt then pops one out, Bloomquist batting .105 continues his slump and pops out on an infield fly.

Baker comes out strong in the bottom of the 2nd getting Jones out on 3 pitches, then Castro makes an amazing play followed by a great scoop by Rizzo. The inning then ends with a hit and an out.

Inning three: With the cubs looking for their first hit Jackson comes up and gets robbed by Walker at 2nd base. Baker and Castro follow suit by making outs.

Baker makes it a quick inning, strikes out the first then an error by Jackson puts a man on, then a sac bunt and an SO.

Inning four: Barney leading off, weak hit to the center of the diamond... looks like he can run it out... OVERTHROW! He gets 2nd base. Probably would of been a hit if it wasn't an overflow but the Cubs still don't have a "real" hit. Rizzo then crushes one to second to get the man to third with 1 away. Salty then crushes one for a double to knock Barney in! CUBS SCORE! Soler singles but can't get salty home and then Schierholtz hits into a DP.

                          Baker follows with a 1, 2, 3 inning.

Inning 5: Bloomquist makes another out and flies out to shallow RF. Jackson then grounds out. Baker then comes up and SOs.

Baker then strikes out 2/3 of the outs on 3 pitches then grounds the other one out in 1.

Inning 6: Castro... deep CF... way back... caught at the wall! Was the first pitch of the inning. Barney who reached on an error last time now up, grounds out to the pitcher. Now stud Rizzo is up with two away, Rizzo swings at one way over his head, then swings at a low an away pitch just on the corner. Rizzo then strikes out on another high pitch, another bad inning.

After giving up a hit and then letting Tabata steal second, Baker came back strong by getting the next three in a pop out, ground out and strike out.

Inning 7: Salty starts off with a ground out. Soler now up, first pitch a curve ball, Soler takes a whack at it... THAT BALLS GOING.. GOING... GOING... GONE! SOLER A SOLO SHOT! Schierholtz does the exact opposite and grounds out and Bloomquist gets out on a bad call on a bunt.

Get up and stretch... and sit right back down in 5 seconds, was the bottom 7th. Baker retired the Pirates in 5 pitches.

Inning 8: Jackson leads off with a single then Baker sac bunts him over to second, with 1 away. Castro the future star is now up, flies out to first base. Barney now up; he flies out to RF.

Baker still going, handles the inning smooth in 7 pitches, a 1, 2, 3 inning.

Inning 9: Rizzo leads off with a close play at first but is called up, Salty then rips a single, looking for insurance. Soler then swings at a low one, then crushes a line out which turns into a double play, as walker robbed him and got Salty with his quick reaction.

Baker going to finish the game now, makes it a smooth 9th in 5 pitches.

Thanks! Yeah I think once Jackson and Soler develop even more it'll be great. Soler's power is at like 70 right now. Anyways, thanks for the good luck and the kind words!
