Myrtle Beach Pelicans (29-21) vs Palm Beach Cardinals (27-23)

Pelicans get 5th straight victory, now tied for first place

Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Victor Payano (3-2, 5.98), Palm Beach- Kyle Helisek (2-2, 4.13)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers knocked 12 hits compared to Palm Beach's 14, but still outscored the Cardinals by 2 runs as Palm Beach left 11 men on base throughout game one of the "Battle on the Beach series".

Runs were scored in every inning except the 5th and 9th. Myrtle Beach Catcher for the evening, David Lyon and 1B Preston Beck got RBI's in the first inning to give the Birds and early lead.

SS Hanser Alberto would add to the Pelcans' lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning with a solo shot off the first pitch he saw in the inning. 3-0 Myrtle Beach.

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans would eventually go up 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth, when 3B Nick Vickerson lead off with a single and Zach Cone continued his excellent at-bats with a 2-run dinger to right, which can be viewed here:

BYE-BYE BASEBALL! Pelicans' OF Zach Cone shoots one to left for a 2-run HR, giving Myrtle Beach a 5-0 lead in the 3rd inning against Palm Beach

The top of inning six is where Victor Payano and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans would allow their first runs of the game. After getting the lead off man to ground out to Myrtle Beach 2B Christopher Bostick, the lefty Payano wildly walked a batter and gave up 3 straight singles before fellow lefty Martire Garcia was called in from the bullpen to put out the fire with one out. Palm Beach would score two runs in the inning, bringing the score to 5-2.

The aforementioned Christopher Bostick doubled to center, his 7th of the year, scoring the 6th & 7th runs of the game in the bottom of inning six. MB still lead, 7-2.

The struggles continued for Myrtle Beach right-hander Jason Knapp in the top of the seventh. Knapp was called upon with a clean sleigh in the inning and after getting a lead off fly out, he quickly gave up back-to-back doubles allowing one run, then gave up a 2-run big fly. The Pelicans' skipper, C. Massey elected to stick it out with Knapp, surprisingly, for the remainder of the inning in order to "lower his sky-high ERA", as Massey told reporters after the game.

Myrtle Beach outfielder Zach Cone did something in the bottom of the seventh that hadn't been done in a Pelicans uniform since Joey Gallo was promoted weeks ago. He homered, his second of the game, a solo shot to put the Pelicans ahead 8-5. Here's a shot of the shot:

    20140703_152143.jpg
Myrtle Beach center fielder Zach Cone hits his 2nd HR of the game against Palm Beach at home

The Cardinals would get one run back in the top of the eighth , but that's all they'd be able to muster against another stuggling Pelican relief pitcher, left-hander Cody Ege.

    Pelican Standouts
CF- Zach Cone: 2-4, 2 HRs, 4 RBI
    SP- Victor Payano: 5.1 IP, 2 ER, 9 H, 2 BB, 7 K
LF- Chris Garia: 2-3, 2 BB, 2B, SB
    2B- Christopher Bostick: 1-3, 1 R, 2 RBI, 2 HBP, 2B
    SS- Hanser Alberto: 1-4, HR

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (30-21) vs Palm Beach Cardinals (27-24)

Crazy back and forth rain game goes to Pelicans!

Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Andrew Faulkner (0-1, 4.11), Palm Beach- Zach Petrick (rehab) (6-1, 5.21)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers got clutch hitting in the late innings to remain tied for first place for another day as the team sees the first half deadline drawing near for a chance at the playoffs.

The Palm Beach Cardinals, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals got things going early in the first inning against Myrtle Beach lefty-starter Andrew Faulkner, scoring two runs on a double by DH Bruce Caldwell.

Myrtle Beach would get one back in the third inning when DH Chris Grayson drove in a run on a single, 2-1 PB.

The top of the 5th saw Palm Beach amass 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk to go up 4-1, heading in to the bottom half of the inning.

That bottom half of the inning saw 1B Preston Beck make a powerful impact. Below, you'll see the view from the eye level of Palm Beach backstop Jesus Montero:

        20140703_161933.jpg
Palm Beach catcher Jesus Montero's view as Preston Beck connects

The solo home run by Preston Beck made the score 4-2, in favor of the Cardinals.

The sixth inning was a very long, exciting inning for both clubs. Myrtle Beach and Palm Beach would combine for 10 runs and 9 hits. Myrtle Beach scored 6 of the 10 runs, tying the game at 8 a-piece going in to the 7th. Vickerson (1), Cone (2), Bolinger (1), Alfaro (1), Grayson (1) all had RBI's in the inning and the Pelicans batted around.

The two beach cities matched each other again in the seventh inning.
The Cardinals got one run from a solo homer by 3B Ildemaro Vargas and the Pelicans got one run from a clutch Nick Williams two out liner over the PB SS's head for a double to tie the game at 9.

Bottom of the 8th: Jorge Alfaro lead off with a single, followed by a Chris Grayson walk. Eventually, Nick Vickerson would break the tie. Here's the highlight of the eventual game winning run:

        https://<iframe width="480" height="...reen></iframe>

Manager Massey was pleased, and he'd be even more pleased when RF Royce Bolinger came up huge, adding a double to deep center scoring both Grayson and Vickerson while giving the good birds a 3-run cushion heading in to the final inning.

Myrtle Beach would need all three runs to remain tied for first place as current-closer Abel De Los Santos gave up 3 hits and 2 runs before lefty Sam Stafford had to come in and get the gut wrenching final out with the bases loaded. The win was Myrtle Beach's sixth straight win.

        Pelican Standouts
        C- Jorge Alfaro: 4-5, 1 RBI
        DH- Chris Grayson: 3-4, 2 R, 2 RBI
        RF- Royce Bolinger: 3-5, 2B, 3 RBI
        SP- Andrew Faulkner: 4.1 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 7 K

I wasn't really planning on actually posting a Bo Batter of the game, but I might start doing that.

Could be fun picking one random guy in their lineup that I have to strikeout and win Bojangle's for the home fans lol

Pelicans win 7th straight, take sole possession of first place!

              20140703_171000.jpg
Myrtle Beach sent Cody Buckel to the mound this evening and he did not disappoint, only giving up 2 hits in 7 innings

Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Cody Buckel, Palm Beach- Samuel Tuivailala

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers wouldn't have much of a contest Monday evening when they held Palm Beach batters to only 2 hits the entire game on their way to a three game sweep in the "Battle of the Beaches" series in Myrtle Beach.

Myrtle Beach starter Cody Buckel has been excellent all season and tonight was no different, despite walking 5 Cardinal batters. Buckel would walk his first batter of the game with two outs in the first, and it would come to hurt him when RF Nick Martini would drive in the only run Palm Beach would get.

The game was all Pelicans from that point forward.

The bottom half of the first saw Myrtle Beach get back to back to back singles to load the bases with one out. CF Zach Cone struck out looking on a questionable pitch low, leaving the Myrtle Beach faithful desperate for someone to come through. That "someone" was David Lyon, who was doing the catching. He would draw a four pitch walk, tying the game, and next batter SS Luis Mendez would ALSO walk, giving the Pelicans a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of inning three, Myrtle Beach would do the rest of their scoring. With one away, Zach Cone got an RBI double to right that scored 3B Nick Vickerson who singled previously in the inning. After David Lyon struck out on a fastball looking, Luis Mendez flied to left for a single, followed by a RF Royce Bolinger walk. Then, the play of the game happened. Myrtle Beach 1B Preston Beck took a 2-2 pitch to right field for a lazy fly ball scoring Cone and Mendez, giving the Pelicans their 5th and final run of the ballgame.

              20140703_171506.jpg
Pelicans' first baseman Preston Beck has been consistant all year for the class-A Advanced farm club of the Rangers, and tonight he drove in 2 runs to help Myrtle Beach sweep Palm Beach

Myrtle Beach would get 2 hits the remainder of the game and Palm Beach would only add one. Neither team even smelled the scoreboard. With the win, the Pelicans now hold sole possession of first place with only a few short weeks before the end of the first half. The winner of the first half automatically clinches a playoff spot.

              Pelican Standouts
              SP- Cody Buckel: 7 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 5 BB, 7 K
              RP- Justin Sprenger: 2 IP, 0 H
              3B- Nick Vickerson: 3-3, 1 R
              1B- Preston Beck: 1-4, RBI

Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Luis Parra (2-2, 4.59), Modesto- Raul Fernandez (2-3, 8.27)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers allowed Modesto Nuts starting pitcher Raul Fernandez, who came in with an ERA over 8.00, look like Cy Young against the Myrtle Beach hitters in game one of a three game set in beautiful Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The Pelicans mustered only one hit through the first 7 innings, meanwhile Modesto scattered 5 hits against Myrtle Beach starter Luis Parra, while Parra had one of his best starts of the season. However, Parra would get himself in to his first trouble of the game in the top of the 8th with one out. After he gave up a lead off single to kick start the inning, he got a strikeout and proceeded to walk the next batter, springing manager Massey in to action out of the Myrtle Beach dugout. Massey went to the lefty Martire Garcia, who got knocked around, allowing both runners he inherited to score making the score 2-0.

Garcia, 24, opened the season with the Frisco RoughRiders has now had six outings with the Pelicans. The southpaw is 1-2 with a 2.25 ERA. He's struck out 11 and walked 10 batters in 16 innings in Carolina League action. He began his time with the Pelicans with 10 scoreless innings. His last outing with the Pelicans came on Tuesday when he fired 1 2/3 scoreless frames and allowed just one hit and a walk.

Myrtle Beach wouldn't get anything going in the bottom half of the inning, but Modesto got back on the scoreboard in the top of the 9th. Right-handed relief pitcher Justin Sprenger struck out the first two batters of the inning, but with only one out left to get, he gave up a solo bomb to the Nuts' catcher, Michael Ramirez, who went 3-3.

The bottom of the 9th saw the Pelicans finally scratch one run on to the scoreboard when 1B Preston Beck picked up an RBI single, scoring DH David Lyon who reached on an error previously in the inning.

With Lancaster beating Palm Beach, the Pelicans lost sole possession of first place, but remain tied for the first playoff spot with just a few weeks remaining.

Chad Bell dazzles again, Myrtle Beach allows 2 hits all game

Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Chad Bell (1-0, 1.35), Modesto- Brandon Erbe (3-4, 5.75)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers knocked around 11 hits last night at home against Modesto, while scoring 4 runs and defeating the under-.500 Nuts.

Saturday night was Coaches vs. Cancer night where the first 1,000 fans received a FREE mini football ft. Steve Spurrier & Dabo Swinny. The fans also had the luxury of witnessing the Cincinnati Bengals' cheerleaders live in action, as they performed a pre-game show. Fans were also strongly encouraged to wear NFL apparel from their favorite team.

The action on the field began in the bottom of the third when Myrtle Beach first baseman Preston Beck singled to center, following a Royce Bolinger (RF) walk. With two outs, probable all-star catcher Jorge Alfaro singled, scoring Bolinger. 1-0 MB.

Through 5.2 innings, Pelicans' lefty-starter Chad Bell had a great ballgame going for himself, but allowed 3 walks in the sixth inning, along with a clutch 2-out double to the Nuts' third baseman, which gave Modesto a 2-1 lead.

The Birds got 2 runs back in the seventh. Royce Bolinger lead off with a double and Preston Beck switched places with him two pitches later driving Modesto to a pitching change. With one away in the inning and Beck on 3rd, after a Nick Williams (CF) single, catcher Jorge Alfaro was up to his games again, driving in a run on a sac-fly, giving Myrtle Beach a one run lead. Here's a look at Alfaro putting a beautiful swing on the baseball:

Pelicans' short stop Edwin Garcia picked up a double in the bottom of the eight inning to add an insurance run heading in to the final frame, but Myrtle Beach wouldn't even need it as closer Abel De Los Santos came in a shut the door on the Pelicans' 33'rd victory on the season.

"He [De Los Santos] seems like he gets better each outing. He's been in some dramatic situations this season in the closer role and Kenny [Powers] and I have been very impressed with his late-game composure"- C. Massey, Manager, Myrtle Beach

Jonathon Gray pitched a game he won't soon forget in Myrtle Beach, striking out 16 batters

Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Sam Wolff (3-3, 5.51), Modesto- Jonathon Gray (4-2, 3.15)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers welcomed a new bat to the lineup with the recent call up of 1B/C Kevin Torres, who was recieved from Low-A Hickory prior to the game. Torres wasn't a factor in the ballgame, but then again seemingly no Myrtle Beach player was a factor, as Modesto Nuts pitcher Jonathon Gray completely had his way with the Texas Ranger's farm club.

Modesto 1B David Bergin got things going in the top of the 2nd with a 2-run double off of Myrtle Beach starter Sam Wolff, who has had a hard time missing bats in recent starts.

The Pelicans would respond rather quickly, thanks to outfielder Zach Cone, who tied the game with one swing of the bat, lifting a high drive to left-center. Two fans would fight over the ball in the outfield before both were ejected from the game. Innocent bystanders were terrified as fists were thrown and the Myrtle Beach City Police took to the scene as soon as possible. The Myrtle Beach Police Department issued a statement after the game; "we feel that the incident would have not escalated so quickly if the argument hadn't been fueled by dollar beer night at the ballpark."

The two teams combined for just one hit until the sixth inning.

In inning #6, split between Wolff and right handed relief pitcher Jose Leclerc, the birds allowed 7 runs on 6 hits and two walks, and the game went from being a pitcher's duel to a blowout over the course of 20 minutes.

The Pelicans would only muster 2 hits the remainder of the contest, with no chance of coming back. After tonight's start, Gray leads the league in strikeouts and is leading the all-star voting for starting pitchers.
