Blue Jays, Indians Strike Early Season Business Deal
CANADIAN PRESS
APRIL 25 2014
For the most part, MLB teams do not make trades within the first couple months of the season.
However, this was less a baseball trade, and more a business deal.
The Blue Jays swapped 2B/OF DANIEL MURPHY to the Indians for OF/1B NICK SWISHER and RHP TREVOR BAUER. The deal is rife with under-performing players: Murphy has started off the season with a poor slash of .187/.235/.219 in 64 AB (21 games). While he has looked good in LF with a .981 fielding percentage, he has not been able to repeat his 2014 performance of 12 HR with a .266 AVG in 429 AB. Swisher, recently declining assignment to AAA with his Veteran's Rights, has performed in similarly awful fashion, posting a .067/.222/.267 slash in 9 games. Bauer has perhaps been the worst of the 3, with a 1-1 record and a 6.97 ERA, accompanied by a 22:13 K/BB ratio and 2 HR in 20.2 IP, having been designated for assignment days ago to make room for Danny Salazar on the Indians roster.
So what motivations did each team have for the deal?
The Indians, already bogged down by Michael Bourn's albatross contract with contract extensions looming for Brandon Moss and Carlos Santana, wanted Swisher's salary off of their payroll. With 3 years remaining on his contract, no team would be willing to give anything of value for him. Murphy, however, expires after this season, despite making slightly more than Swisher this season. To rid their future salary obligations of Swisher, they included Bauer in the deal, who, while an intriguing prospect, has continually disappointed at the major league level.
Toronto clears some salary this season, perhaps saving for a large expense elsewhere (whether it be at the trade deadline, through the draft, or even through international free agency), while acquiring an interesting reclamation project in the 24 year old Bauer. Swisher's switch-hitting ways adds utility to the roster, as he enters into a time share with Seth Smith and the struggling Justin Smoak. Bauer could reappear at the major league level after time spent in AAA Buffalo.
As well, Toronto optioned the struggling OF MICHAEL SAUNDERS to AAA Buffalo while calling up OF KEVIN PILLAR.
Spoilerif someone could teach me how to remove the remaining black spots from the MLBTR logo that would be excellent, magic wand tool isn't workingLast edited by AC; 02-16-2015, 12:15 PM."Twelve at-bats is a pretty decent sample size." - Eric ByrnesComment

Blue Jays Lose Hamels
BEN NICHOLSON-SMITH
MAY 1 2015
It just keeps on getting worse and worse for the Blue Jays.
After getting mauled for 8 runs in 4 innings for what seems like the hundredth time this year, Cole Hamels left the game wincing in pain. The MRIs came back the next day: torn rotator cuff.
"It'd been bothering me since a bit before the year started. I thought I could pitch through it but it became too much. I feel like I'm letting the guys down."
A torn rotator cuff is a rather serious injury. Hamels will miss a minimum of 2 1/2 months, but some are questioning if he'll come back at all this year. In a year that the Blue Jays were expected to compete, this is some of the worst news humanly possible.
LHP Daniel Norris was promoted to take Hamels' spot in the rotation.Last edited by AC; 05-18-2015, 02:51 PM."Twelve at-bats is a pretty decent sample size." - Eric ByrnesComment

Off to a Bad Start
BARRY DAVIS
MAY 1 2015
Oof.
That was not a fun month for Blue Jays fans.
Cole Hamels? Out for three months. Russell Martin? Hitting .183. Jung-Ho Kang? .186. Jose Reyes has 0 home runs, despite a .296 average; Encarnacion and Bautista, despite a combined total of 12 home runs in April, have averages below .235 and OBPs below .300. There's no one out in left field; Nick Swisher and Seth Smith are doing their best, but it really isn't good enough. Stroman and Buehrle have ERAs approaching and over 5. So, are there any signs to be optimistic about these Blue Jays, who have started off 10-17, in last place?
There are certainly some.
Josh Donaldson has slashed .283/.319/.496 with excellent defense and 6 home runs so far. Despite Reyes' power outage, he's making solid contact and his defense at second has been more than fine. Drew Hutchison has been a revelation, posting a 2.76 ERA in 32.2 IP with a near-6:1 K/BB ratio. R.A. Dickey has looked more and more like the ace that the Blue Jays acquired, with a 3.23 ERA himself. The bullpen has been mixed; Kyle Drabek has shown great strikeout stuff but the walks and home runs are a problem. Jason Grilli has been pretty bad, but has 6 saves in the team's 10 wins. Miley, Morrow, Loup, Fields, Morrow and Beachy have all performed well thus far.
It's not looking great, but it's too early to tell.
***
From around the league:
- Freddie Freeman: Hitting .402 and slugging over .700. For a player that's been shrouded in trade rumors so far, he's hitting very well; perhaps new GM Jon Hart will look to sell high?
- Madison Bumgarner: On the other end of the spectrum, Madison Bumgarner has been horrible, posting an ERA over 5. Could the Giants look to move him for prospects?
- Justin Verlander: He's worked his magic so far, maintaining an ERA under 1 for the first month of the season.
- Anthony Rizzo: Ouch. This young cub was thought to have lots of potential, but between 2013 and 2014, he hit just .233 and .246 with 23 and 20 homers. Not what the Cubs were expecting. Now, hitting just .181 with 1 HR, he's entering Justin Smoak territory.
- Kenta Maeda: Oh my goodness, where were the Jays on this guy? 1.71 ERA in the first few months of the season, going 4-1. 26 year old is posting huge numbers in his first month, giving Boston the ace they needed.
- Byron Buxton: Can this kid ever stay healthy? Out again with MORE injuries. It's starting to look bleak for him. Gotta wonder when the Twins look to move on.
- Mike Leake: Out a few months with shoulder trouble. Big shame, he looked like he'd put it all together with a 2.2 ERA.

Had to take hitting off of HOF. Can't do it, lol. Think i'll keep it there for just the playoffs, it seems solid for playoff offense. But for 162 games, I swear to flippity floppity **** I'll break my controller, lol"Twelve at-bats is a pretty decent sample size." - Eric ByrnesComment
