Potential Traded Targets for Reds - April

This will be a series I do every month of players that are on the Reds radar.

Starting Pitching - With Johnny Cueto being the ace of the staff, you would think they are petty set here. However, the bottom half is not good at all. With Anthony De Sclafani almost at his peak, they will probably be looking for someone to fill this gap. Johnny Cueto is also eligible for Free Agency this off-season.

Suitors - Jon Niese, NYM, Cole Hammels, PHI

Set-Up man - The Reds desperately need a set up man to get to Aroldis Chapman, but they don't have anyone capable in the MLB, or the minors. Who is on the block to fill this role?

Suitors - Tony Sipp, HOU, Mike Dunn, MIA

Back-up Catcher - Bryan Pena is the current back-up catcher, but GM Archie Wagner has shown signs that he isn't confident if starter Devin Mesoraco gets hurt. Who is on the market to take his place?

Suitors - Andrew Susac, SFG, John Jayso, TB

Utility Infielder - The Reds don't have a utility infielder, but it is a key part of most teams to get the regulars a rest. Who is GM Archie Wagner looking at?

Suitors - Ben Zobrist, OAK, Willie Bloomquist, SEA

4th Outfielder - The Reds currently have some veterans manning the 4th and 5th outfielders, but in an attempt to get younger they may trade these guys for a younger, and better 4th outfielder. Who are potential targets?

Suitors - David Murphy, CLE, Andre Ethier, LAD,

Reds score 4 in 9th, Win Game 1 vs Cubs

Chicago, IL - Up until the 9th inning, the Reds vs Cubs game looked like it would be heading into extra innings, but the Reds had other plans. Tied at 2 after scoring 1 run in the 8th, 1st basemen Joey Votto hit a double to the left field gap. In an effort to get some speed on the base paths Kristopher Negron pinch ran for Votto. Devin Mesoraco then played good team baseball, sac bunting Negron to third, but this did not make much of a difference. The very next batter, veteran Marlon Byrd hit a wall-scraping home run to left center field to put the Reds up 4-2, but they were not done. Another veteran, Jay Bruce, started rally number two of the 9th inning. Bruce walked, bringing up pitcher spot, who was pinch hit for by Bryan Pena. Pena struck out which looked to be a rally killer, but it wasn't. Jay Bruce stole 2nd because the pitcher was not paying much attention. Eugenio Suarez, who was brought into the game earlier as part of a double switch grounded to left field, which scored Bruce, making the stolen base very crucial. Brandon Philips finished the party with a base hit to center putting the Reds up 6-2. Todd Frazier also had a home run, and an RBI double earlier in the game. Tony Cingrani got the victory, going 1.1 innings, allowing 1 hit and walking one. Jumbo Diaz pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to secure the victory.

Win - Tony Cingrani (2-0)
Loss - Jason Motte (0-1)
Save - N/A

Simulated Games Recap

Cubs Game 2

CIN (4-4) - 1/0/0/1/1/0/0/0/0 = 3/5/1
CHI (3-5) - 0/0/0/0/4/1/1/0/x = 6/9/0

Joey Votto and Zack Cosarts' home runs would not be enough to match the Cubs 4 run 5th inning. Chris Couglans' 3 run home run, and a solo shot by Jorge Soler was all the Cubs needed to win this one.

Cubs Game 2

CIN (5-4) - 0/0/0/3/0/1/0/0/1 = 5/11/0
CHI (3-6) - 0/0/1/1/0/0/0/2/0

The Reds used late inning magic once again to take the game, and the series from the Chicago Cubs. Marlon Byrd hit a 3 run home run in the 4th, and also added on a double. Bryan Pena hit a pinch hit single in the 9th to put the Reds up 5-4, and Aroldis Chapman slammed the door.

Reds Cruise behind Cueto's strong performance

Saint Louis, Mo - After allowing a run in the first inning, it looked like the Reds may be in for a beating, because the Cardinals ran out their best pitcher Lance Lynn. Lynn is one of the best pitchers not only on the Cardinals staff, but in the entire National League. Thank goodness the Reds ran out their own star pitcher Johnny Cueto. Today Cueto was defiantly better then Lynn, because Lynn was roughed up for 5 runs, including an inside the park home run by Joey Votto.

The Reds bats were red hot against Lance Lynn, and it is the main reason they won todays ballgame. 7 of the 9 players in the line-up recorded hits. The only two players who failed to record hits were Brandon Philips and Zack Cosart. Even though it is very early in the season, you have to wonder how much longer Archie Wagner will stick with Cosart as the everyday shortstop. He is batting under .200, and strikes out often.

Another key player in the game was veteran outfielder Jay Bruce. Bruce hit a home run over the right field wall. He also hit an RBI single earlier in the game. Billy Hamilton also causes havoc on the bases, swiping two bags. The only ugly play in the game was made by Brandon Philips, when he failed to field the ball, and then threw it over the first basemen resulting on two errors on one play.

Pitcher Johnny Cueto went 7 and 2/3 innings, and held the opposition to two runs. Although the ball was being hit hard off Cueto, he managed to last for quite a while. He was commanding his fastball well, and did not give up a walk. He only missed 4 bats, which may be a bit concerning, but a win is a win in my book.

Win - Johnny Cueto (2-1)
Loss - Lance Lynn (1-2)
Save - N/A

Simulated Games Recap

Cardinals Game 1

CIN (5-5) - 0/1/1/1/1/0/0/1/0 = 5/12/0
STL (6-4) - 3/0/0/0/0/0/0/3/x = 6/7/1

After taking a two run lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, it looked like the Reds would be on their way to victory. The bottom of the order was up, but they came through. The Cardinals managed to bat all the way around, with RBI's coming from Matt Holliday, Johnny Peralta, and Kolton Wong.

Cardinals Game 3

CIN (6-6) - 0/0/0/0/0/0/0/1/0 = 1/6/1
STL (7-5) - 0/0/3/3/0/0/0/0/x = 6/11/0

With back to back 3 run innings by the Cardinals, the game was out of hand early. Kolton Wong hit a 3 run home run in the 3rd, and also had a RBI, and stolen base. Matt Carpenter also had a 2 RBI double, and the Red Birds take the series.

Series 5 Review

Reds out hit 12-1, drop game 5-1

Milwaukee, Wi - The first six innings of the Reds-Brewers game looked like it was going to be a game for the ages, and that it might take 15 or 20 innings to complete. Matt Garza had a perfect game going into the 6th, before walking two men, and then Billy Hamilton got a single, and an RBI. Billy Hamilton's single ended up being the only hit in the afternoon game for the Reds. Reds starting pitcher Anthony De Sclafani had only given up 4 hits to the point, and they were up 1-0 in the bottom of the 6th.

Most of the fans in attendance probably thought the game may have been over, despite it only being a 1 run game, but it wasn't. Carlos Gomez started off the inning with a single, and then stole 2nd putting him into scoring position. This brought hope into the stadium, which later turned into a dream becoming a reality. Adam Lind then hit a sharp base hit up the middle, which scored Gomez and tied up the game.

The way both pitchers had pitched up to that point, it looked like neither would give up another run, but that was not the case. Garza cruised through the top of the seventh, and then when it was the Brewers turn to hit, they did not disappoint. Veteran Aramis Ramirez had a base knock to center, followed by a Khris Davis ground ball turned hit to right. The Brewers and the fans attending could smell trouble for the Reds, as Martin Maldonado singled to left loading the bases. Gerardo Para pinch hit for Matt Garza, ending his night, and Para would come up with the bases loaded, and no outs in a tie ball game.

Para did not disappoint, doing exactly what he needed to do. He hit a long fly ball to the warning track, scoring Ramirez. The Reds then brought in lefty Sean Marshall, but that may not have been the smartest move. The Reds then turned a near double play, but Gomez beat it out scoring another costly run. They also tacked two insurance runs on in the bottom of the eighth inning.

After this game Reds fans and Reds front office management may be wondering if it is time for a new bat. It is still early in the season, but the Brewers are a team they should beat. Some names on the market include 1st basemen Adam LaRoche and Kendrys Morales.

Win - Matt Garza (2-0)
Loss - Anthony De Sclafani (0-2)
Save - Micheal Blazek (1)

Simulated Games Recap

Brewers Game 1

CIN (7-6) - 1/0/0/0/0/1/1/1/0 = 4/8/0
MIL (6-7) - 0/0/1/0/1/0/0/0/0 = 2/3/2

This may have been the ugliest game of the year for both teams. Reds pitcher Mike Leake only managed to get through 2 innings before being removed due to injury. Wily Peralta threw 6.2 innings, allowing 6 hits for 3 runs. Joey Votto hit a RBI triple, and a solo homer leading the team to victory.

Brewers Game 3

CIN (8-7) - 3/2/0/0/1/0/0/0/0 = 6/12/1
MIL (7-8) - 0/0/1/0/0/0/1/0/0 = 2/8/0

The Reds jumped off to a hot start from the get go as Billy Hamilton hit a lead off double, and was then driven in by a 3 run Marlon Byrd home run in the first. Hamilton also hit a two run double in the second inning. Rookie Micheal Lorenzen got his first win of his career, going 8 strong innings.

Brewers Game 4

CIN (9-7) - 0/0/0/2/4/0/0/0/0 = 6/9/0
MIL (7-9) - 0/1/0/0/0/2/0/0/0 = 3/13/1

Despite the Brewers 11 hits off star pitcher Johnny Cueto they only managed to score a total of 3 runs off of him. Brewers pitcher Kyle Lohse only logged 3.2 innings in the ball game. Slugger Joey Votto homered again, this time a 3 run shot.Jay Bruce also hit a homer in the ball game.

Brennan Boesch, Skip Schumaker Traded

In an effort to gain a bullpen arm, and create a roster spot for top prospect Jesse Winker, Reds GM Archie Wagner decided to trade some veteran bench player. Brennan Boesch and Skip Schumaker were both veteran players ad did not see much of the field, so Archie shopped for relief pitching in a package deal. The Nationals offered relief pitcher Evan Meek, and Archie accepted the deal. Meek will probably be used in games greater than 3 runs, and won't pitch in many pressure situations. The Reds have also called up one of the top prospects Jesse Winker. Manager Dusty Baker said Winker will arrive in Cincinnati for game 2 vs Chicago, and he will be in the starting line-up.
