GORDON PLACED ON DISABLED LIST; DOZIER RE-CALLED
Veteran OF expected to miss two to three weeks with oblique strain

    By artoodeetoo
    06/03/2019

It's back to the disabled list for Alex Gordon, as the veteran left fielder suffered an oblique strain diving for a sinking line drive in the fourth inning of the Royals' walkoff triumph on Friday night.

The man who replaced him in the lineup, Jorge Soler, was the big hero in that one, driving in all four Royals runs by going 2-for-3 with two doubles, including the game-winning double with the bases loaded to turn a 3-1 deficit into the 4-3 victory.

Hunter Dozier was re-called from Omaha to take Gordon's place on the roster; as he'll likely provide some outfield depth, as well as spelling at first and third base. Jose Iglesias played third base for the first time since 2013, as he replaced Cheslor Cuthbert in the lineup to give him a night off, going 1-for-3 with a two-RBI double as the Royals won 3-1 to take the series.

Gordon is not expected to miss more than two to three weeks, but it is unclear at this point whether or not he'll rehab in the minors before re-joining the Royals.

      GENERAL MANAGER'S REPORT (MAY)

      AL CENTRAL STANDINGS

      Chicago White Sox: 29-29
      Cleveland Indians: 27-30
      Minnesota Twins: 24-32
      Kansas City Royals: 24-35
      Detroit Tigers: 21-35

      MAJOR TRANSACTIONS

With a log-jam at first base, it was necessary to try and clear some of that. Unfortunately, Frank Schwindel was the casualty, but we're still waiting on word of who the player to be named later is. Also, we're slowly, but surely bringing up the core of the team that we hope will contend in the years to come. Peter Alonso is the next piece of that, and he's off to a pretty good start.

June is when trade talk begins to heat up, but unlike last season, we're in a winnable division. We don't expect any major moves unless the situation changes rapidly over the next few weeks.

      MINOR LEAGUE AFFILIATE RECORDS

Omaha: 28-21 (3rd, PCL Amer. North)
NW Arkansas: 25-23 (2nd, Texas League North)
Wilmington: 32-16 (1st, Carolina League, Northern Division)
Lexington: 30-18 (1st, South Atlantic League, Southern Division)

      REPORTS FROM MINOR LEAGUE MANAGERS

Chemistry amongst the top four affiliates seems to be solid to this point. Winning will do that, although there have been a few isolated complaints. The only affiliate that seems to be lacking someone stepping up in a leadership role is Lexington, but when you're dealing with a room full of guys in their early 20's, it's a little tough.

PLAYERS OF THE MONTH - MAY

      Kansas City: Cheslor Cuthbert, 3B
Still not sure if the long-ball power is going to come around, but he did hit four homeruns and drive in twenty-three with a .333/.384/.500 slash this month. His reached-base streak is also still alive; pushing forty games while reaching base in every game he played in the month of May.

      Omaha: Dillon Maples, RHP
Maples has been unhittable so far this season, with a 0.60 ERA in fifteen innings of work, fanning a whopping twenty-nine hitters in that time frame with just seven walks. In May alone, he fanned twenty in 11 1/3 innings of work with six walks, while scattering six hits. He struggled in a brief stint with the Royals earlier this season, but it'll be hard to keep him away for much longer.

      NW Arkansas: Erick Mejia, SS
Mejia, acquired from the Dodgers along with Trevor Oaks prior to last season, is carving out a name for himself at Double-A. He collected forty-one hits in May, with thirteen going for extra bases, including nine doubles, three triples, and a homerun. He also stole nine bases in ten tries, and slashed a remarkable .331/.385/.476.

      Wilmington: Jace Vines, RHP
Daniel Lynch and Jackson Kowar get the headlines, but Vines had a great month in his own right. The fourth-rounder out of Texas A&M in 2016 was 2-1 in May, fanning twenty-nine with just two walks in 31 1/3 innings of work, covering five starts.

      Lexington: Kyle Hinton, RHP
Taking over as the closer following Daniel Tillo's promotion to High-A Wilmington, Hinton took to it like a fish in water, posting an 0.57 ERA with six saves in 15 1/3 innings, with fifteen strikeouts and four walks. He also had four wins out of the bullpen, and went multiple innings five times, showing some range.

          BETANCES, YANKEES STYMIE LATE RALLY

Down 4-1 in the top of the ninth, the Royals loaded the bases against Tommy Kahnle with three consecutive base hits with no one out, but Dellin Betances slammed the door shut with a strikeout and two groundball outs to squeak out the victory. Brad Keller got the start for the Royals, going six innings while allowing four runs on five hits, walking four and fanning three. New York picked up all their runs in the fourth, thanks to a pair of homeruns -- a three-run homerun by Greg Bird that he slipped just inside the right-field foul pole into a stiff breeze, and Jacoby Ellsbury flexed his muscles for a 400-foot shot a few batters later that might have been 450 to right-center, if not for the wind. Ryan O'Hearn was the offensive star for Kansas City, going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, and Billy Hamilton drove in the Royals' only run with a single in the third.

ROYALS BLANKED AS YANKS RUN THE TABLE

Kansas City found a tough opponent in Masahiro Tanaka, who shut the Royals out over eight and one-third innings of work before giving way to Tommy Kahnle in a 2-0 defeat at the hands of New York. In his first game against the Yankees since being claimed by the Royals earlier this season, Luis Cessa pitched reasonably well, allowing just two runs in six innings. However, he walked four with just three strikeouts, getting help in the form of two double plays. Nathan Karns pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits, two walks, and fanning two. Jorge Bonifacio led the Royals offensively by going 2-for-3, hitting his first two doubles of the season.

Danny Duffy fanned nine in six innings, and the Royals scored single tallies in the first, third, fourth, fifth, and ninth innings to cruise to a 5-3 victory, with Trevor Rosenthal picking up the save, his seventh. Peter Alonso broke a 3-3 tie to put the Royals up for good in the fifth inning, lacing a two-out single with runners on second and third. Salvador Perez added an insurance run in the ninth with a Salvador Perez solo homerun, his team-best seventh of the season.

ROYALS TAKE RUTSCHMAN WITH TOP PICK
            Catcher considered top-five talent

            By artoodeetoo
            06/06/2019

Kansas City made Oregon State catcher Adley Rutschman the 2019 MLB Draft's seventh-overall selection on Wednesday, and the selection was immediately lauded by most experts, including ESPN's Keith Law and MLB.com's Jim Callis.

"We've been talking about Rutschman as a consensus top-five selection for the better part of the last twelve to eighteen months, maybe to even go 1-1," Law quipped in a tweet. "To fall out of that, even if just a few spots, is remarkable."

Both Law and Callis, who were in Secaucus, N.J. for the draft with their respective outlets, and analyzed the picks in the first round by-one, both conceded that the road to the majors for catchers is the most difficult to traverse, with the exception of pitchers.

"If there were two guys that could do it, hit the major leagues by 2021, it's these two catchers," Callis said after the Rutschman pick. "The one thing that stymies these guys is, can they handle the bat? Both of them are excellent handlers of the bat, Rutschman a little more so. But it's still a tough adjustment."

Another prominent MLB amateur writer, Baseball America's Ben Badler, thought the Royals really didn't have a huge need at catcher, but took the 'best available' route.

"Kansas City didn't really have a pressing need at catcher until Rutschman fell to them," he said in a recent interview with a Kansas City-area radio station. "I think besides Salvador Perez, he'll arguably be the second-best receiver in the entire organization; and while the learning curve is steep for catchers, he might be one of the few to buck the trend and advance quickly. There's not a lot in the minors that's blocking him from doing so, and it might be a big reason why the Royals liked him so much."

And that may have been the impetus for jumping on Rutschman with their first pick. Just two years ago, Salvador Perez hit twenty-seven homeruns with twenty-four doubles, and was worth 2.5 WAR. Fast-forward to 2019, and he's been a 1.2 WAR player in the last year and one-third. He's having an overall solid defensive season (1 E, +2.1 UZR, 1.135 EFF, 35.5% CS), but has OPS'ed just .590 and has just 11 XBH (6 HR, 5 2B) all season.

Most importantly, Perez has a team option pending this offseason that will guarantee him $13M each in 2020 and 2021, and that's a hefty price tag for a player that's barely at replacement level. There's close to zero chance that gets exercised by the organization unless he has a huge season the rest of the way out, and I feel good in saying that they might look to move him in that situation.

Kansas City had all but prepared to take either shortstop Rece Hinds or LHP/OF Hunter Barco, both high school players, with that pick until Rutschman slipped past Detroit, Texas, and Cincinnati. Detroit eventually took high school shortstop C.J. Abrams fourth, and Texas and Cincinnati took University of Kentucky southpaws Zack Thompson and Andy Miller fifth and sixth, respectively. The two high school players the Royals were considering, Barco and Hinds, went eighth and twelfth respectively to San Diego and Seattle.

He has some leverage in negotations, as he has a year of eligibility remaining at Oregon State and could conceivably improve his draft position into the top five. But with a College World Series championship in his back pocket and a huge exodus of talent leaving the Beavers' program, he might feel its the right time to make the jump.

The Royals also made nine other picks in the draft's first two days, including three college pitchers (Derek West - 2nd, Bryan Hoeing - 4th, Nick Spear - 9th, one high school infielder (Gunnar Henderson - 3rd), two high school outfielders (Andre Tarver - 5th, Jasiah Dixon - 10th), one high school pitcher (Jason Diaz - 6th), and two college infielders (Ike Freeman - 7th, Kyle Marsh - 8th).

Of the remaining picks on the first two days, the toughest sign might be Henderson, an Alabama-native shortstop who is committed to Auburn for 2019. The six-foot-two, 190-pound Henderson also projects to third base, and has a smooth lefty swing that doesn't produce a ton of long-balls, but lots of line drives and hard contact.

The rest of the draft continues tonight at 5 PM EST, with Rounds 11 through 40 streamed live on MLB.com. A more thorough evaluation of the Royals' draft will be later this month.

              KANSAS CITY BULLPEN FALTERS

The Royals wasted a fine effort from Jake Junis, as the right-hander allowed just three runs in seven innings, but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead as Detroit turned a 4-3 deficit after six-and-one-half innings into a 6-4 victory. Richard Lovelady, who has dealt with command issues all season long, walked a pair and gave up two runs in the eighth to take the loss to fall to 3-3. The Royals went up 2-0 in the first on a Cheslor Cuthbert homerun, and later added a two-run homerun in the fifth from Peter Alonso. But Mike Gerber hit a two-run shot of his own off Junis to pull Detroit to within one, and then rallied late off Lovelady and Josh Fields, who relieved him with the bases loaded and two out in the eighth.

              TIGERS NO MATCH FOR OAKS

Trevor Oaks continued his strong first-half run, tossing seven and two-third innings of one-run ball in a 10-1 Royals victory. Oaks left the game with nine strikeouts and no walks to a standing ovation, running his record to a team-best 7-3. Kansas City scored early and often, with six runs in the first three innings, including four in the second thanks to an error. Jorge Soler and Salvador Perez each drilled two-run homeruns, and six Royals had at least two hits as they racked up fifteen hits overall. Tigers starter Daniel Norris was lit up for six runs, but only two of them were earned. He went just two innings, allowing seven hits and walking three hitters.

KANSAS CITY PULLS AWAY LATE IN VICTORY

Backed by Jorge Bonifacio's four RBI, the Royals turned a 2-0 deficit into a 6-2 victory to take the series. Brad Keller got the ball for the Royals; struggling through four innings, throwing eighty-eight pitches and allowing six hits and three walks. Salvador Perez tied the game in the fifth with a two-out, two-run double, and Bonifacio broke the tie with his fourth homerun of the season. He would later add an insurance run on a single in the eighth inning. With two scoreless innings, Jorge Lopez picked up the victory to move to 3-5 on the season, and Blake Treinen earned the save, his fifth, by going two scoreless innings. He fanned three while allowing just one hit, continuing his strong play after a disastrous April.

Phillips embarks on rehab stint; Lynch added to 40-man roster

                06/10/2019

In the midst of a disappointing 2019 campaign, the Royals have sent Brett Phillips on a rehab assignment to Omaha to try and rediscover his 2018 form after being activated from the 10-day disabled list. He's slashing just .195/.288/.347 with seventy-seven strikeouts in 219 plate appearances for Kansas City this year, a far cry from his .278/.342/.477 after being acquired from Milwaukee in 2018.

"A lot of it is just in his head," said Royals hitting coach Terry Bradshaw. "When you think everything needs to go 450 feet, it ends up going zero feet an awful lot."

The Royals also designated southpaw Jerry Vasto for assignment, and outrighted Drew Smith to Omaha upon completing his rehab assignment. It's still likely that he'll be with the Royals at some point this season, but the bullpen has righted the ship since a disastrous first month, so there's not an obvious open spot.

To take Vasto's spot on the 40-man roster, the team purchased 2018 draftee Daniel Lynch's contract. He's the first member of the 2018 class to make the 40-man; and the chances we see him in September have jumped dramatically, especially in a bullpen role.

His first start in Double-A on Friday night didn't go as planned this past week, allowing five runs on eight hits in five innings, but still picked up the victory. He was 7-1 with a 2.55 ERA in Wilmington prior to getting the call to Northwest Arkansas, a notoriously tough league for pitchers.

ROYALS SCORE EARLY, OFTEN IN DECISIVE "W"

Kansas City wasted little time getting on the board early, scoring five runs in the first three innings to coast to an 8-2 victory on Tuesday night. They later added three more in the sixth, all with two out. Jorge Soler continued his string of solid games lately, hitting his fifth homerun in the sixth, and Salvador Perez drove in a run with a single. Billy Hamilton then brought Perez home thanks to an error on the pitcher, Sam Dyson, who spiked a throw to first into the outfield to allow Perez to score from second. Luis Cessa pitched a strong game, going seven innings while giving up just two earned runs on one swing, a two-run homerun from Eddie Rosario. He fanned nine with just one walk to even his record at 4-4.

TWINS PULL AWAY LATE; ROYALS BLANKED

Charged with six runs over eight innings, Danny Duffy had one of his worst outings in recent weeks as the Royals fell 8-0 in AL Central action. The Royals entered the ninth only down 4-0, but back-to-back Twins hits to lead off the inning chased Duffy from the game; and Josh Fields surrendered a triple to the first hitter he faced, Tyler Austin, in relief of Duffy; which brought home both runners. Michael Pineda spun a four-hit shutout, striking out five with one walk to improve his record to 4-6. Duffy fell to 5-4, also snapping a string of seven quality starts.

Pitching for the first time in over a week, Trevor Rosenthal allowed two earned runs in two-thirds of an inning, but with the bases loaded and two outs, Treinen retired Justin Bour on a nice diving play from Jorge Bonifacio in right. Cheslor Cuthbert surpassed the 50-RBI mark with a two-run single in the second inning.

                    OAKS WINS BATTLE OF TREVORS

The lower five hitters of the Royals' lineup dominated in the first game of this series, going 9-for-20 with ten runs scored, nine RBI, and three homeruns as Kansas City rolled to a 12-0 shutout victory over Cleveland. The Royals' Trevor Oaks got the better of his namesake in the opposite dugout, tossing seven and one-third shutout innings before being pulled with 112 pitches. He fanned five with two walks, while scattering seven hits. Meanwhile, Trevor Bauer allowed nine runs (five earned) in five innings, although he did flash decent stuff with seven strikeouts and just two walks. His downfall was the homerun ball; surrendering three in his abbreviated outing, and the Royals hit four homeruns in all.

CLEVELAND HOLDS OFF LATE ROYALS RALLY

The Indians led nearly wire-to-wire, with the exception of a 1-0 deficit after one half-inning, but staved off a steady rally over the final innings to claim a 7-4 victory over the visiting Royals. Yonder Alonso and Yan Gomes had the big blows in the game, with Alonso stroking a two-run homerun, followed by a two-run double from Gomes later in the inning off Royals starter Brad Keller. Kansas City chipped away at their 6-1 lead beginning in the sixth; with a solo homerun from Peter Alonso, an RBI double from Nicky Lopez in the seventh, and then Cheslor Cuthbert's RBI single in the eighth. However, the duo of A.J. Ramos and Brad Hand, who both have struggled this season, held the line to secure the victory. The save for Hand was his tenth of the season.

ROYALS CLINCH THIRD STRAIGHT SERIES VICTORY

Peter Alonso continued his onslaught against the Indians, hitting a first-inning grand slam as part of a five-RBI day in the Royals' 6-0 shutout victory over Cleveland. It was his third straight game with a homerun, and he would later add an RBI in the eighth inning on a groundball out. Sandwiched in between those plays was a fifth-inning sacrifice fly from Salvador Perez. Luis Cessa fired seven and one-third shutout innings in his best performance as a Royal, fanning five with just one walk while scattering five hits to pick up his fifth victory of the season. Josh Fields pitched the last inning and two-thirds, striking out two, walking two, and allowing a double.

                      SCHWINDEL SWAP COMPLETED; PTBNL ANNOUNCED
McCauley picked in 14th round in 2018

                      06/17/2019

Back on May 1st, the Royals dealt first baseman Frank Schwindel to the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named later. That PTBNL has been announced as of this morning, as pitcher Riley McCauley was acquired to complete the deal.

A 14th-round pick in 2018, McCauley had a nice 2018 season post-draft, with a 0.56 ERA and twenty saves in 32 1/3 innings for the Cubs' Single-A affiliate in South Bend, Ind. He made the jump to High-A Myrtle Beach for this season, and hasn't had quite the success with a 5.79 ERA in 9 1/3 innings (eight appearances), even though he's fanned thirteen hitters in that time frame.

He'll start out his Royals career with the Royals' High-A affiliate in Wilmington, Del., where they've had a lot of shuffling in the pitching staff recently, with Jose Veras, Daniel Tillo, and Grant Gavin all holding the closer or late-inning roles.

A sixth-inning homerun from Cheslor Cuthbert ended up being the difference for the Royals in their 5-4 victory at Milwaukee to open a short two-game set. Cuthbert homered off Brandon Woodruff with two outs and a man on to put the Royals up 4-2, just a few batters before Brian Goodwin added to the lead with a solo homerun of his own. Making his MLB debut, Drew Smith picked up the victory with five strong innings, fanning four with just one walk and five hits scattered. Trevor Rosenthal pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up the save, his eighth of the season.

                        OFFENSE IMPOTENT IN SHUTOUT DEFEAT

Chase Anderson pitched five and one-third shutout innings, and Ryan Braun was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI as the Royals suffered a 5-0 defeat to split the short two-game set. Kansas City failed to advance a runner past second base the entire contest, mainly thanks to a pair of double plays that they grounded into. They did have one player reach base more than once -- Ryan O'Hearn doubled in the second, and singled in the fifth as part of a 2-for-4 day. The O'Hearn two-bagger was his 14th of the season.

ROYALS AGREE TO TERMS WITH PREP SHORTSTOP HENDERSON

The Royals have finally came to terms on an agreement with third-round selection Gunnar Henderson, as the 17-year-old shortstop landed a $3.15M bonus from the Royals to convince him to ditch his commitment to Auburn University. Henderson was the top high school player in Alabama the past two years; and has tremendous potential as either a shortstop or third baseman, according to most experts that follow the amateur ranks. The left-handed hitter hit nineteen homeruns combined the last two seasons, and committed just two errors in that same time frame.

"He has an uppercut swing that's going to produce more homeruns than doubles and triples," noted MLB.com draft analyst Jim Callis. "There's still room to grow. I could see him hitting 25-plus homeruns in the majors."

Only first-round pick Adley Rutschman remains unsigned out of the team's top ten picks as of the writing of this update, but all indications are he'll be signed by the end of the day tomorrow, and will report to Burlington to begin his professional career immediately after signing. Besides Rutschman, the only other pick that remains unsigned is 24th-round pick Sam Wibbels, a right-handed pitcher who is committed to Kentucky.

                          METS CLAIM HERRERA OFF WAIVERS

Kelvin Herrera's second stint with the Royals was much, much shorter than his first, as he was claimed off waivers by the New York Mets. He was replaced on the roster by Max Povse, who was acquired two days ago from the Mariners in exchange for Jerry Vasto.

In 25 1/3 innings, Herrera spun a 3.91 ERA, but walked eighteen with twenty-five strikeouts, one of the lowest strikeout rates of his career (8.9 K/9). He was replaced on the roster by southpaw Tim Hill, who is now on his third separate tour with the Royals in 2019 alone.

GORDON SENT ON REHAB ASSIGNMENT; PHILLIPS TO RETURN MONDAY

For a brief period of time, Alex Gordon will join outfield teammate Brett Phillips in the minors on a rehab assignment. Phillips has been in Omaha for the last two weeks, while Gordon is not expected to stay more than three to four games.

"It's more of a shake-the-rust-off for Alex," said manager Ned Yost. "Brett's down there because he really needed to get his mind right, and get some confidence in his swing back. I expect he won't be down much longer, but he's not finished yet."

Phillips is hitting .273 in forty-four at-bats for Omaha, with a homerun and four RBI.

                            ROYALS WIN IN EXTRAS

Trevor Rosenthal gave up a two-run double to Alejandro Perez in the ninth to tie the score at five, but Ryan O'Hearn came through in the 11th with an RBI single which was enough to knock off Detroit in extras 6-5. With two scoreless innings of relief in the 10th and 11th, Josh Fields picked up the victory; allowing just one hit, and striking out one. O'Hearn also collected an RBI in the first on a sacrifice fly with no one out and the bases loaded. The top of the Royals' order did the most damage in this one, with the threesome of Billy Hamilton, Adalberto Mondesi, and Cheslor Cuthbert going 6-for-13 with six runs scored, one homerun, two RBI, and five walks. Cuthbert walked three times, and Mondesi hit his eighth homerun of the season in the fourth to tie Cuthbert and Salvador Perez for the team lead. Mondesi was 3-for-5 with a walk, double, two runs scored, and a stolen base in addition to his homerun.

The Tigers kicked the scoring off with a solo homerun from Jeimer Candelario in the first, before getting three more tallies in the second, and one in the third. Oaks hurled scoreless fourth and fifth innings before getting touched for another run in the six, finally chasing him from the game. Adalberto Mondesi doubled home a run in the third, and Peter Alonso singled home a run in the seventh inning for Kansas City's only two runs of the ball game.

TIGERS NIP ROYALS WITH LATE RALLY

Dixon Machado's RBI single off Josh Fields in the eighth was the difference, as the Tigers took two of three from the Royals after their 4-3 victory last night. Kyle Zimmer made his second career appearance, and was tagged with the loss after the RBI hit from Machado, as he was responsible for the runner that scored. He went just one inning, allowing one hit and one walk in addition to being tagged with the Tigers' winning run. The Royals had actually come from behind, as they were down 3-0 after five innings. Peter Alonso drilled his seventh homerun of the season to left-center, and Adalberto Mondesi doubled home a pair of runs off Jordan Zimmermann to tie the game at three. Gerson Moreno picked up the save, his fourth of the season.

ROYALS SIGN TOP PICK RUTSCHMAN; 24TH-ROUNDER WIBBELS

In what might have been the biggest news of the week, the Royals announced the signing of top pick Adley Rutschman, catcher from Oregon State with the seventh overall pick.

They signed the six-foot-two backstop to a bonus of $2,155,500, one of the priciest bonuses handed out to a catcher in the draft's history. He reports to Burlington tomorrow in time for their season opener.

Kansas City also announced the signing of high school pitcher Sam Wibbels, as he netted a $150,000 bonus to skip his Kentucky commitment. With the Rutschman and Wibbels signings, the Royals managed to sign all forty picks, something they haven't done since the draft dropped to forty picks.

TREINEN HEADS TO THE DISABLED LIST

After a strong May and 2/3rds of June, Blake Treinen is headed to the disabled list, according to manager Ned Yost. Following Saturday night's 8-2 loss, manager Ned Yost broke the news to the local media on hand.

He'll miss no more than a week to ten days, and Yost said it was not likely he'd go on a rehab assignment unless there was a setback. Treinen left with an elbow injury in Friday's game, and was diagnosed as simple elbow soreness.

GORDON, PHILLIPS TO RETURN TO LINEUP

Kansas City is expected to welcome Brett Phillips back to the Royals after a lengthy rehab stint with Omaha. After a slow start, Phillips ended up hitting .333/.394/.550 in sixty-six plate appearances with the Storm Chasers.

Also returning from Omaha, Alex Gordon had a much shorter stay, only playing in just five games. He was 5-for-17 (.353) with one homerun and four RBI.

O'HEARN SLAM WINS IT FOR KANSAS CITY

Rising off the bench in the seventh inning, Ryan O'Hearn blasted a pinch-hit grand slam off Nick Gardewine, and that slam proved to be the difference as the Royals claimed a 6-4 victory over the visiting Rangers. The Royals were up 2-1 after six innings, thanks to a brilliant start from Drew Smith, who fanned nine in six innings and allowed just three baserunners (two hits, one walk, one homerun). Richard Lovelady came in at the start of the seventh, and put two men on with two out only to surrender a three-run homerun to Yasmani Grandal to cough up the lead. However, it set the stage for O'Hearn's heroics, as his second grand slam of the season gave the Royals the comeback victory. Trevor Rosenthal worked around a two-out single to pick up the save, his ninth of the season.

                                RANGERS WIN SEESAW CONTEST

Baseballs were flying out of the yard at an alarming rate, as the Royals and Rangers hit four homeruns each in a 9-7 defeat for Kansas City. The lead changed hands four times in the late innings; with the big blow coming in the seventh inning off the bat of Texas' Ronald Guzman, a three-run homerun against lefty Tim Hill. It wasn't the most efficient start for Danny Duffy, who went just five and one-third innings, but struck out seven with three walks and six hits. Adalberto Mondesi went 3-for-4 with a homerun, two singles, a walk, and a stolen base. Peter Alonso, Cheslor Cuthbert, and Brett Phillips also had three hits apiece, with Phillips and Alonso each hitting a solo homerun. Alex Gordon also hit a homerun in this one, his fourth of the season.

                                ROYALS RACE PAST RANGERS

Behind a 15-hit barrage, the Royals upended the Rangers by a touchdown, 10-3. Rookies Peter Alonso and Nicky Lopez led the way with four hits each, with Alonso reaching base in all five plate appearances while falling a triple short of the cycle. Lopez also hit his fifth triple of the season, a two-run three-bagger in the seventh inning. It wasn't his sharpest start, but Jake Junis picked up his fourth victory with five innings of work, striking out six with two walks. In his three games since returning from his rehab assignment, outfielder Brett Phillips continued to rake; picking up three more hits, including a double.

After Kansas City failed to break the tie in the bottom of the ninth, Yasmani Grandal stroked an RBI single with two outs off southpaw Richard Lovelady in the tenth for the game-winning run. Texas' Matt Bush pitched a career-high four scoreless innings to pick up the victory, fanning one while allowing just one hit and one walk.
