FROM THE DESK OF THE GENERAL MANAGER

      Date: 05/31/2018 03:56:24 PM
      From: Greenleaf, Travis
      To: Moore, Dayton; Glass, Dan
      SUBJECT: Re: Month-end analysis

      Mr. Glass & Mr. Moore:

Wow, what a rough month. I had always thought that the first several weeks were a bit of a mirage, so I wasn't totally caught off-guard by the struggles, but it's still tough to watch it unfold. Unfortunately, Cleveland is beginning to catch fire in recent days, and with the composition of the division as it is with so many teams in flux, it's going to be difficult to overcome that. Some veteran hitters have played out over their skis, and are beginning to regress to the mean. That said, record-wise I think we're somewhat close to where I thought we'd be on the aggregate, maybe a little behind.

Veterans that we've expected to play leading roles on the team also have not performed up to par. I've been really disappointed in Danny Duffy's performance to this point; I know in discussions with Ned, he's mentioned that he wonders if he's hiding an injury, but his medicals have checked out fine. If we're going to compete, Danny's going to have to step up his game. He's not an elite pitcher, but he's a solid guy to have, and he's in the discussion as one of the better lefties out there. I'm pretty confident he can get things turned around, as he's done it before.

On the plus side, we're going to find out what some of the young guys are made of. The young pitchers that were called up are going to have their moments of brilliance, like Scott Barlow. Or they're going to get roughed up a bit, like Brad Keller did. I received a sneak peek of the internal monthly report that Lonnie Goldberg puts out each month; and I'm excited to read the remainder of it tomorrow. He's been effusive about the development of some of the pitching in recent weeks, notably Trevor Oaks, whom we acquired over the winter from the Dodgers.

While we're not out of either the divisional or wildcard races by any means, I still believe that within the first week or so of the month, we should begin to realistically assess if the playoffs are in the cards this year, and then plan accordingly. We can also discuss Lonnie's report. After receiving some phone calls regarding available players in trades in the last few days, I'd like to privately discuss said assets that I believe are expendable, and would provide a reasonable return at the very least. The injuries; especially amongst our veteran pitching, are beginning to pile up, and I fear that we're going to be relying on younger players to keep us in the race at least for the next four to five weeks in the lead-up to the All-Star Break.

I plan on making another round through the minor league affiliates this month, and next month's report will include more information regarding the general mood in the locker rooms of those teams. Both of you have mentioned to me Omaha's struggles and reports of some managerial/player strife, and it's a concern to me as well. I'll make that my first stop in a couple of days to get a feel of the situation once the month-end stuff goes by. As always, our correspondence is confidential.

      Respectfully,
Travis Greenleaf, SVP & General Manager

        TOP PROSPECT LEE PROMOTED

I didn't get to see much of the development report yesterday, but what I did see was favorable. One of the highlights was our top prospect Khalil Lee, who has been recommended for promotion by the scouting department after a .354/.447/.579 line in 229 PA for A-Advanced Wilmington. He's also cut down on his strikeout rate, from around 30% last year, to around 20% this year, contributing to his higher BA and OPS numbers.

A's, Chapman Bash the Royals, 10-2

Matt Chapman drove in five runs in a 3-for-5 day, as the A's shellacked the Royals 10-2 to begin a three-game home series. The Royals have lost five straight home games, and seven of their last ten. Jake Junis had his first poor outing of the season; but still managed to strike out seven with just one walk in six innings of work, eventually being charged with seven earned runs. Salvador Perez homered in the fifth inning for his sixth homerun of the season, and Whit Merrifield drove in the Royals' other run with a sac fly in the eighth inning to score Alcides Escobar.

          Losing Streak Reaches Six

Only Whit Merrifield's seventh-inning single kept the Royals from getting shut out, as the A's led from start to finish in a 3-1 victory. Former Royals farmhand Sean Manaea was largely effective, holding the Royals to one earned runs despite four walks and just three punchouts. Blake Treinen pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to get the save. Oakland hit three homeruns in the game, including leadoff hitter Herschel Powell, who hit the game's first pitch over the right-field wall off Scott Barlow. In his second start, Barlow went five and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs and seven hits, fanning three.

Royals In Freefall As Losing Skid Reaches Seven

The Royals' long offensive slump dragged on for another day, as the A's pulled off the road sweep with a 3-1 victory over the scuffling Royals. Former Kansas City pitcher Trevor Cahill hasn't been good this year, but fired five and two-third innings of one-run ball, fanning six and scattering three hits despite five walks. Danny Duffy allowed a three-run homerun in the fourth inning for his only mistake, but didn't get much support from his offense with four hits and one run. The Royals begin a three-game series with the Angels tomorrow night, and the 2018 MLB Draft also begins tomorrow night with the team making the 18th selection.

ROYALS TRADE JON JAY TO ARIZONA

After receiving some pretty heavy interest from clubs regarding Jon Jay, we've decided to trade him to Arizona for a pair of prospects -- Gabe Speier, a left-handed reliever, and Elvis Luciano, a right-handed pitcher who is eighteen and has barely scratched the surface. Speier will report to Northwest Arkansas, and Luciano will likely start in Burlington when their season begins later this month.

Royals' Offense Explodes; Snaps Seven-Game Skid

Rookie Trevor Oaks pitched seven solid innings, and Abraham Almonte went 3-for-3 with a walk, three doubles, and four RBI as the Royals rolled up on the Angels by a 9-4 score. The win put the brakes on a seven-game losing streak, and keeps the Royals out of the cellar for the time being. Third baseman Mike Moustakas also went 2-for-4 with a homerun, it being his team-high 16th of the season, and drove in a pair of runs. Oaks allowed ten hits in his MLB debut, but zero walks with three strikeouts, getting ten groundball outs and a pair of rally-killing double plays in the process. On the other side of the ledger, every Angel starter had at least one hit, but left six men on base, including five with runners in scoring position and less than two outs.

                MLB SCOREBOARD

                Soler Powers Royals Extra-Inning W

It was his only hit of the game, but Jorge Soler's 12th-inning slam broke a 4-4 tie in the inning, and Brian Flynn went on to lock down the bottom of the frame in scoreless fashion to secure the Royals' 8-4 victory. Los Angeles held a 4-3 lead heading into the ninth, and had closer Blake Parker on for the save. However, Parker's first hitter, Mike Moustakas, drilled a solo homerun to tie the score before getting the last three outs, wasting a great effort from starting pitcher Matt Shoemaker. Shoemaker fanned ten with no walks in seven innings, holding the Royals to just three runs on six hits.

                Royals Fall; Still Claim Series

For the third straight game, the Angels scored four runs, but this time it turned out to be enough as they salvaged the final game from the Royals, handing Kansas City a 4-1 defeat. Garrett Richards put together his best performance of the 2018 season, holding the oft-struggling Royals to just one run on seven hits in seven and two-third innings of work in his return from a rehab assignment in the minors. The only run came via Ryan Goins, who parked a Richards fastball into the left field seats in the eighth inning. Jake Junis was the victim of some shoddy defense, as a Mike Moustakas error in the sixth led to two unearned runs. Junis fell to 6-4 despite a solid performance, allowing two earned runs in six and one-third innings.

Chapman's Three Homeruns Propel the A's Over Kansas City

Oakland third baseman Matt Chapman single-handedly was the difference in the Royals' 7-6 defeat, as he tied the Oakland team record with three homeruns, and also singled twice to go 5-for-5. He homered off Royals starter Jason Hammel twice, and hit a two-run homerun off Scott Barlow in the sixth, which was the game-winning hit. Hammel returned from the disabled list a few days ago, and allowed five runs and twelve hits in five innings, but did fan six with no walks. Barlow gave up the homerun to Chapman with one out in the sixth, but retired the last eight hitters he faced, going three innings in the process. Hunter Dozier hit his second homerun of the season, Whit Merrifield had a two-RBI double in the fourth, and Abraham Almonte doubled twice to give him a team-high sixteen on the season. The Royals have dropped eight of their last ten games to fall to 28-36 on the season, including 0-4 against Oakland in that stretch.

                    Ninth-Inning Rally Falls Short

Hunter Dozier homered for the second time in as many games, but the Royals still managed to fall short again in Oakland, falling 5-4. Dozier's three-run blow in the fifth broke a scoreless tie, and starter Danny Duffy shut the A's down in the bottom of the fifth. But Oakland cut the deficit to one in the sixth, and then reliever Brad Keller surrendered three runs in the seventh to lose the lead. Duffy went six and one-third innings as part of a solid effort, but his winless streak reached seven games, as he hasn't won since May 1st against the Red Sox. The Royals tried to rally in the ninth off closer Blake Treinen, with Abraham Almonte's triple and followed by an RBI single from Alcides Escobar with one out to pull the Royals to within one. Alex Gordon and Dozier struck out, however, to end the threat and the contest.

Gordon, Almonte Parlay Big Nights Into 8-3 Victory

Thanks to a combined 7-for-8 performance, Alex Gordon and Abraham Almonte led the Royals past the A's 8-3. It was their first win over Oakland this season in six tries. Almonte was 4-for-5 with three runs scored, while Gordon reached base in all five plate appearances, falling a triple short of the cycle and walking twice. Trevor Oaks allowed a pair of solo homeruns to Matt Chapman and Khris Davis in the sixth inning, but overall pitched well to pick up his second win in going six and one-third innings. In addition, rookie Rosell Herrera, just acquired via waivers from the Reds a little less than a week ago, went 2-for-4 with a walk and his first career MLB RBI, making his second start in right field.

The Royals couldn't get much going against Kendall Graveman, as he held themm to one run over six innings to pick up his third win of the season in a 3-1 score. Jorge Soler drove in a run with an RBI single in the first, but couldn't get anything else going. Whit Merrifield had four hits, including his team-high 17th double of the season in the first, and would go on to score on Soler's hit. Ian Kennedy took the loss, going five innings while allowing two runs. Burch Smith continues to throw gas out of the bullpen, fanning three more in two scoreless innings of work.

FROM THE DESK OF THE GENERAL MANAGER

                      Date: 06/11/2018 07:06:24 PM
                      From: Greenleaf, Travis
                      To: Moore, Dayton; Yost, Ned
                      SUBJECT: Omaha visit

It's been a few days since I returned from my visit to Omaha, but here are my impressions after visiting with manager Brian Poldberg:

                      • They've had a really solid month -- just one loss in June so far. Now, some of that might be due to having major league players like Lucas Duda, Nathan Karns, Justin Grimm, and Jesse Hahn in and out of the lineup, but it's a pretty impressive comeback. They started out 3-15, but have gone 25-22 since.

                      • It seems to be a clubhouse that lacks a true leader. It's hard to find that in the minor leagues with so many players shuffled in an out. Despite his struggles this season, Bubba Starling has been a key player in keeping the clubhouse somewhat positive. Overall, it's still a bit melancholy at times, but winning has helped that immensely.

                      • Kyle Lohse just submitted his retirement papers to the league. He came off the disabled list a few games ago, and gave up a homerun in four pitches to the first batter he faced, and said that his arm just didn't have it anymore after the game. He's a guy that's given a lot to the game, and we wish him the best as he moves on with his life.

                      • Brian also mentioned to me that he feels that Adalberto Mondesi is ready to sink-or-swim in the majors. He's hitting .305/.340/.441 so far this year, and had similar numbers last year in Triple-A. We don't really have a roster spot right now, but it's something that we've been considering doing anyways.

                      Respectfully,
Travis Greenleaf, SVP and General Manager

Jake Junis went eight strong innings, scattering six hits and two runs (both solo homeruns) with seven strikeouts to lead the Royals to a 4-2 victory over the visiting Reds. He also didn't walk anyone, and has issued just sixteen walks in 98 1/3 innings of work this season. Abraham Almonte tripled twice and singled to lead the Royals offensively, also driving in two of the Royals' runs. Rosell Herrera has been solid early on, going 1-for-3 with a walk, a single, and an RBI. Kelvin Herrera ran into some issues in the ninth, allowing a double to Adam Duvall and a single to Nick Senzel with two outs, but coaxed a line drive out to Alcides Escobar to end the contest. The Royals reached the 30-win plateau with the victory.

                            Springer's Slam Dooms Kansas City

An awful seventh inning from the bullpen ruined another strong start from Danny Duffy, who allowed just two earned runs in six innings as the Royals fell 9-5 to Houston to open their three-game series in Kansas City. The Royals were down 3-0 after four-and-a-half innings, but a grand slam from Mike Moustakas put the Royals in front 4-3 after five innings. It was Moose's 19th homerun of the season, by far leading the team, and ranking in the top five in the American League. However, that lead was short-lived. With three left-handed batters on deck in the seventh, and Danny Duffy nearing one-hundred pitches; Ned Yost turned to the normally-reliable southpaw Tim Hill, allowing just a .218 BAA against LHB. He failed to record an out, allowing two hits and a walk before being pulled for Burch Smith. Smith didn't fare any better, allowing a pair of base hits before George Springer stepped to the plate with the bases juiced, and parked a 1-2 fastball over the right-field wall to put the game away. Gerrit Cole went seven innings for the Astros, allowing four earned runs (all on one hit). He's now 3-8 on the season, but still holds a lofty 5.80 ERA.

Royals Pull Even With 4-2 Victory

Just re-called from Triple-A, Adalberto Mondesi singled three times and drove in a run to help lead the Royals to a 4-2 victory over Houston to even their three-game series. He was one of only three Royals to collect hits, as Alex Gordon and Whit Merrifield had two and one hits, respectively. Ian Kennedy earned the victory, allowing two earned runs over seven and one-third innings of work. Tim Hill was called in to face Josh Reddick, but was ultimately chased from the game for Justin Grimm, who got George Springer to fly out with the bases loaded to end the inning. Kelvin Herrera worked a scoreless ninth inning to convert his 13th straight save opportunity.

Royals Squander Ninth-Inning Lead; Fall In Extras

Derek Fisher's leadoff homerun in the 14th off rookie reliever Jason Adam was the game-winning hit, as the Royals failed to score in the bottom half to drop the game 6-5, and the series two games to one. The Royals actually held a 5-3 lead going into the ninth, but with Kelvin Herrera having been traded to Washington in the wee hours of the morning prior to the game, the Royals called upon Burch Smith to close out the game. However, Smith surrendered a leadoff homerun to Brian McCann, and then was pulled with the bases loaded and one out in favor of the struggling Tim Hill, who was able to get out of a bases-loaded, tie-ball game jam that Smith put him in with a 4-2-3 double play. Adalberto Mondesi and Mike Moustakas each had three hits in the marathon affair, with Mondesi collecting six hits and two RBI in his first two games with the big club this season. Rookie first baseman Hunter Dozier has struggled overall, but hit his fourth homerun of the season in this contest as well.

HERRERA TRADE CAPS FLURRY OF ROSTER MOVES

After weighing multiple offers for Kelvin Herrera, Washington's package of prospects that included Kelvin Gutierrez, Yohanse Morel, and Blake Perkins was the best overall. They were also the only team to offer more than two. Trading Kelvin was one of the hardest moves the team has had to make in recent years, since he was one of the last vestiges of the 2014 & 2015 World Series clubs. However, Gutierrez is only two years or so away, and he was having a great season in Double-A Hartford to this point, slashing .294/.382/.418 with sixteen XBH.

Jorge Soler is also going on the disabled list with a toe injury, with Wily Peralta and Adalberto Mondesi taking their places on the active roster. Peralta's contract was re-purchased from Omaha, and he'll be in the mix in the bullpen after Herrera's departure.

It wasn't his sharpest performance, but Jake Junis managed to earn his eighth victory with six and one-third innings as the Royals opened a three-game set with the Rangers by claiming a 5-4 victory. He allowed nine hits and only fanned a season-low two, but didn't walk a batter and allowed just two earned runs. Elvis Andrus chased him from the game with a solo homerun with on out, and lefty batters Nomar Mazara and Joey Gallo on deck. Brian Flynn came in and got both out, and then retired both Adrian Beltre and Rougned Odor before giving way to Brandon Maurer. Justin Grimm earned the one-out save, getting Tommy Joseph to fly out to Alex Gordon to end the game. Salvador Perez was 3-for-4, including a two-run homerun to the opposite field in the seventh. Hunter Dozier hit his fifth homerun of the season, but in the unconventional way - inside the park. Nomar Mazara dove for a sinking liner from Dozier, and Delino DeShields did not back him up in time, leading to the inside-the-parker.
