Chaz Roe brings some much needed help to the back end of the bullpen

Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks have traded Yasmany Tomas to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for reliever Chaz Roe. Tomas played 309 regular season games with the DBacks, hitting .266 with 48 home runs and 163 RBIs, but has spent most of the past three years in Reno. His best season was 2016 when he hit .272 with 31 home runs and drove in 83.

Chaz Roe is a 33-year-old how made his Major League debut with Arizona in 2013. He has played in New York, Baltimore, Atlanta and Tampa Bay compiling a career 3.93 ERA in 253 appearances. He is a solid setup man for the back end of the bullpen for a team that has had some bullpen issues this season.

Re: Los DBacks - An MLB 20 Franchise Presented by BigJDotCom

      June 9-11: ARIZONA (38-30) @ COLORADO (40-28)

      June 9: DBacks 7, Rockies 4
      June 10: DBacks 10, Rockies 5
      June 11: DBacks 7, Rockies 4

The Diamondbacks opened up a ten game road trip with a three game sweep at first place Colorado as the DBacks moved to within two games of the Rockies in the N.L. West.

In the opener, the DBacks blasted four more home runs as they defeated the Rockies 7-4. Is there anyone in baseball hotter than Kole Calhoun? Tuesday evening he hit two more home runs and drove in four after hitting two on Sunday and driving in five.

Arizona jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first on a Kole Calhoun three run home run. Travor Story hit a two-run bomb in the third to cut the DBacks lead to just one run.

Madison Bumgarner lead off the fifth inning with a home run into the visitor’s bullpen. It was his first on the season. David Peralta followed that up with a rocket into the seats in right as the DBacks moved out in front 6-2.

Nolan Arenado would get one back with a solo home run to left in the sixth. It was his 19th on the season.

Kole Calhoun hit his second homer run in the ninth. The solo shot was his 15th on the season, most on the DBacks.

Reliever Chaz Roe made his Arizona debut working a perfect eighth inning. Andrew Chafin gave up a run in the bottom of the ninth, which allowed Archie Baradley to come on and get the final out with two runners on base to lock down his 15th save. Madison Bumgarner (5-5) also pitched well. He went seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on just five hits. He struck out five and walked one.

Jon Gray (9-3) took the loss, lasting just five innings and allowing five runs on six hits.

More home run derby on a rainy and cold Wednesday evening at Coors Field. The Rockies hit four home runs in a 10-5 loss to the DBacks. This game also featured a 65 minute rain delay in the fourth inning.

Arizona scored twice in the top of the first thanks to a couple of sacrifice flies. They would add three in the third on a Kole Calhoun RBI single and Nick Ahmed two-run triple to make it 5-0.

After a lengthy rain delay in the fourth, Trevor Story lined an RBI double to get the Rockies on the board against Arizona relieve Merrill Kelly.

Eduardo Escobar homered to dead center in the sixth. The two-run shot made it 7-1 and the DBacks cruised to victory from there. Nick Ahmed went 4 for 4 with a double and triple while driving in three runs.

Merrill Kelly (2-3) picked up the win in relief, since starter Mike Leake only went three plus due to the rain delay. Antonio Senzatela (7-3) was saddled with the loss. He lasted just 2 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits while throwing 82 pitches.

Notes: David Peralta left the game in the first inning after pulling up with a hamstring injury running into third. It was just a pull but the club has placed him on the 10-day Injured List and recalled first baseman/outfielder Kevin Cron from Triple-A Reno.

In the finale the DBacks jumped all over Jeff Hoffman, scoring runs in each of the first four innings as they led 6-0 after four. Ketel Marte led the game off with a solo home run on the very first pitch of the game as he went 4 for 4 with a double, home run and three RBIs.

Luke Weaver (6-2) picked up the win, tossing six innings and allowing two runs on six hits. Junior Guerra worked a three inning save, giving up a couple of solo home runs to Daniel Murphy and Ryan McMahon.

Tim Locastro went 4 for 5 with a double and two runs scored.

Arizona now travels to San Diego for a three game weekend series with the Friars.

Re: Los DBacks - An MLB 20 Franchise Presented by BigJDotCom

        June 9-11: ARIZONA (40-31) @ SAN DIEGO (31-42)

        June 12: Padres 5, DBacks 4
        June 13: DBacks 6, Padres 2
        June 14: DBacks 2, Padres 1

Arizona keeps rolling on as they took two of three from the division rival Padres in a weekend series down in San Diego.

The Padres took the opener in a very exciting game, 5-4. Francisco Mejia broke a 4-4 tie with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning off of Yoan Lopez to send the hometown Friars to the victory.

Arizona jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings and it looked like the beat would continue with young ace Zac Gallen on the bump. But the Padres were very patient and ran up his pitch count, getting to him for two runs in the third and one in the fifth on a Tommy Pham solo home run. The Padres would take the lead in the bottom of the seventh when newcomer Chaz Roe walked in the go ahead run after being called in from the bullpen.

Eduardo Escobar immediately tied the game in the top of the eighth with a long solo home run to right off of Emilio Pagan. That set up Francisco Mejia’s heroics in the bottom half, hitting a solo home run off of Yoan Lopez to give the Friars the late lead.

Kirby Yates came on and got the first two outs before Kole Calhoun singled. He got Eduardo Escobar to bounce into a 5-4 force out to end the ball game and end the DBacks winning streak at four games.

The DBacks won on Saturday evening with a very workmanlike 6-2 victory over the Padres. Rookie Daulton Varsho had a big night going 2 for 3 with a double, home run and two RBIs.

Once again Arizona jumped out early, this time leading 4-0 after 2 ½ innings. They had some help in the third though, scoring three runs thanks to two big Padres defensive miscues.

Jon Duplantier picked up his third win to improve to (3-1) on the season. He allowed two run son five hits in 7 1/3 innings of work, striking out four. Garrett Richards (4-5) did not bring his A game, tossing five innings and allowing four earned runs.

Eduardo Escobar homered for the second straight game, hitting a solo shot in the eighth. He now has 12 home runs on the campaign.

Ketel Marte went 0 for 5 to end his 21 game hitting streak.

The DBacks had just two hits in the finale. Luckily they were both solo home runs as Eduardo Escobar and Starling Marte both homered in a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at a sun splashed Petco Park in downtown San Diego. Madison Bumgarner improved to (6-5) as he tossed seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits, while striking out five.

Yoan Lopez and Archie Bradley were both perfect out of the bullpen with Bradley picking up his 16th save on the season as the DBacks won their 40th game to move a season high nine games over .500 at (40-31).

Arizona now heads to Los Angeles for a four game series with the Dodgers (39-32). This is the first meeting between the clubs in 2020.

Re: Los DBacks - An MLB 20 Franchise Presented by BigJDotCom

          June 15-18: ARIZONA (41-34) @ LOS ANGELES (42-33)

          June 15: DBacks 6, Dodgers 2
          June 16: Dodgers 5, DBacks 2
          June 17: Dodgers 6, DBacks 3
          June 18: Dodgers 3, DBacks 2

The Dodgers took three of four from the DBacks at Dodgers Stadium in the first meeting of these two teams in 2020. Los Angeles hit 12 home runs in the series, but scored just 16 runs as they moved ahead of the DBacks and back into second place in the National League West.

In the opener, another nice pitching performance from Mike Leake sent the DBacks to a 6-2 victory over the Dodgers. The DBacks used a five run second inning off of Clayton Kershaw to move ten games over .500 on the season.

Mookie Betts gave the Dodgers a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning, hooking a home run down into the Dodgers bullpen. It was his 18th home run on the season.

Arizona responded in the second, scoring five times. Kevin Cron laced an RBI double to score Eduardo Escobar. John Jay singled home Kevin Cron. Starling Marte tripled home Josh Rojas and John Jay, and Tim Locastro capped it off with an sacrifice fly.

The DBacks would add a single run in the sixth on a John Jay RBI single.

Mike Leake (4-3) pitched eight innings, allowing the two first inning runs on just six hits. He struck out five and did not issue a walk. Clayton Kershaw (8-4) took the loss for LA, allowing five earned runs on six hits in five innings of work. He struck out three and walked one.

On Tuesday evening, the Dodgers hit four solo home runs in a 5-2 victory over the DBacks. Julio Urias tossed six innings to pick up the win, allowing two runs on seven hits, while striking out three and walking two.

The Dodgers bullpen was perfect over the final three innings, getting the final nine outs without allowing a base runner. Kenley Jansen picked up the save, his 22nd on the season.

The Dodgers got home runs from Max Muncy, Joc Pederson, Will Smith, and Mookie Betts. Betts homered in Monday’s opener also and now has 19 on the season.

Arizona scored its two runs on a Nick Ahmed two-run double in the sixth. Luke Weaver (6-3) took the loss, working just four innings and allowing four runs on five hits including three solo home runs.

Notes: Tim Locastro left the game in the sixth inning after pulling up going into third with an apparent Achilles injury. It was determined after the game that it was a tear and he will miss the remainder of the 2020 season. The DBacks placed him on the 60-day Injured list. Locastro was having a great season, hitting .335 with two home runs, 15 RBIs and 14 stolen bases in 49 games.

Arizona recalled third baseman and utility infielder Wyatt Mathisen from Triple-A Reno. He was hitting .282 with seven home runs and 33 RBIs for the Aces.

On Wednesday evening, the Dodgers once again relied on the long ball as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead then held on for a 6-3 victory. Joc Pederson, who came into the series hitting .184, went deep twice in going 3 for 4 to lead Los Angeles to the victory.

The Dodgers broke a scoreless tie in the fourth, getting to Zac Gallen four times in the inning. Mookie Betts and Cody Bellinger hit back-to-back RBI doubles, and Max Muncy hit a two run shot to right to cap off the four run inning.

Joc Pederson hit a solo home run off of reliever Merrill Kelly in the sixth, and Joc Pederson hit his second on the evening in the eighth off of Chaz Roe.

Jake Lamb hit a two-run double in the seventh and Eduardo Escobar hit a solo home run in the ninth accounting for Arizona’s runs.

David Price (7-2) earned the victory, working seven innings and allowing two runs on five hits. Kenley Jansen picked up a one-out save in the ninth for his 23rd on the season.

In the finale, the Dodgers hit three solo home runs, all off of Jon Duplantier, as they held on for a 3-0 victory over the DBacks to take three of four in the series.

The Dodgers got home runs from Jurickson Profar, Corey Seagar and Mookie Betts in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings as they built a 3-0 lead.

Eduardo Escobar hit two solo home runs for Arizona’s only offense. One in the seventh off of Tony Gonsolin, and one in the ninth off of Kenley Jansen. They were Escobar’s 14th and 15th on the season.

Tony Gonsolin (4-7) picked up the victory for the Dodgers, tossing seven innings and allowing one run on just five hits. Kenley Jansen earned his 24th save as he worked the ninth.

Jon Duplantier (3-2) was saddled with the loss despite pitching pretty well. He allowed all three Dodgers runs on solo home runs. He went six innings, allowing seven hits, while striking out three.

The DBacks will return home for a weekend series with the Milwaukee Brewers (33-40) beginning tomorrow evening.

Re: Los DBacks - An MLB 20 Franchise Presented by BigJDotCom

            June 19-21: MILWAUKEE (35-41) @ ARIZONA (42-36)

            June 19: DBacks 1, Brewers 0
            June 20: Brewers 6, DBacks 5
            June 21: Brewers 4, DBacks 1

The DBacks recent woes continued over the weekend as they dropped two of three to the red-hot Brewers at Chase Field.

The DBacks took the opener 1-0 behind a great pitching performance from Madison Bumgarner. Bumgarner went 8 1/3 innings, scattering six hits while striking out seven as he picked up his seventh win.

Arizona would get the only run of the game in the bottom of the second on an Eduardo Escobar solo home run to left off of Trey Supak. It was his 17th on the season and third straight at-bat with a home run.

Archie Bradley came on in the ninth with one out after Christian Yelich doubled off of Bumgarner. He got Keston Huira to bounce out and then struck out Avasail Garcia to end the ball game as he earned his 17th save.

On Saturday evening the Brewers got a late home run from Keston Huira to pull out a 6-5 victory over the DBacks. Huira hit the first pitch that he saw from Kevin Ginkel to open the ninth inning. He went 3 for 5 with that home run and he also added a double.

Milwaukee pitchers struck out 16 DBacks batters in this one including eight straight late in this one. Corbin Burners (5-3) picked up the win out of the bullpen for the Brewers working the seventh and eighth innings and striking out all six men that he faced.

The DBacks three-run rally in the sixth inning was capped with a Carson Kelly two-run home run to move the DBacks in front 5-4. But a Justin Smoak RBI single in the seventh off of Hector Rondon tied the game at five. Yoan Lopez came on to get the DBacks out of a bases loaded jam to keep the game tied at 5-5.

That set up Huira for his late game heroics as the Brewers won their sixth game in the last seven and Arizona dropped its fourth in their last five.

David Peralta made his return to the lineup after coming off the injured list and went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBI.

In the finale, Eric Lauer spun a gem, tossing eight innings and allowing just a run on three hits as the Brewers took the rubber match of the weekend series, 4-1. The Brewers scored three times in the top of the eighth to blow open a tight pitchers duel.

Luke Weaver (6-4) was the hard luck loser, going seven plus innings and allowing two runs on seven hits. He struck out six. He lasted into the eighth where he gave up a lead off double to Luis Urius. Former Brewer Junior Guerra came on and was he was not good, allowing two runs on two hits and leaving after getting just two outs as the Brewers built their lead to 4-0.

Arizona would get their lone run on a solo home run from Starling Marte in the bottom of the eighth. It was his third on the season.

The DBacks will close out the home stand with a three game series against the Dodgers (44-34) beginning tomorrow evening at Chase Field.

Re: Los DBacks - An MLB 20 Franchise Presented by BigJDotCom

              June 22-24: LOS ANGELES (47-34) @ ARIZONA (42-39)

              June 22: Dodgers 6, DBacks 2
              June 23: Dodgers 8, DBacks 4
              June 24: Dodgers 7, DBacks 5 (11)

The Dodgers came into Chase Field and swept the stumbling DBacks to take over first place in the National League West.

In the opener, the Dodgers used the long ball late to pull out a 6-2 victory over the DBacks. Jurickson Profar went deep off of Zac Gallen in the sixth to put the Dodgers up 3-2 before Cody Bellinger hit a three-run blast off of Chaz Roe in the seventh to seal it.

Arizona had taken a 2-1 lead in the second on a two-run double from Starling Marte, after Max Muncy had given the Dodgers a lead in the top half with a solo home run off of Zac Gallen.

Gallen (6-5) really pitched well, but made two mistakes and they cost him. He went 6 1/3 innings, allowing the three runs on six hits. He struck out seven and did not issue a walk. Yoan Lopez and Chaz Roe combined for the rough eighth inning that sealed the DBacks fate as they dropped their sixth game in their last seven.

David Price (8-2) earned the win for Los Angeles. He wasn’t particularly sharp, but he went six innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He walked on and struck out one.

On Tuesday evening, the Dodgers jumped out to an early lead and cruised to an 8-4 victory over the DBacks. Mookie Betts continues to haunt the DBacks as he went 3 for 5 with a double, home run and 3 RBI in the Dodgers win.

Los Angeles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first off of Jon Duplantier thanks to two wild pitches and a ball that should have been an error but was ruled a double. In the third, Mookie Betts slammed a long two-run home run to make it 4-0. Cody Bellinger then homered for the second straight night, hitting a two-run shot off of Duplantier in the fifth to make it 6-0.

The DBacks did give the fans a bit of excitement in the sixth as David Peralta, Ketel Marte and Kole Calhoun hit back-to-back-to-back homer runs to cut the Dodgers lead to 7-4, but they would get no closer.

Jon Duplantier (3-3) took the loss, lasting just 4 1/3 innings and giving up six runs on eight hits. He struck out two, walked one and uncorked two first inning wild pitches. Tony Gonsolin (5-7) picked up his second win in a week over the DBacks, going six innings and allowing the four runs on just four hits.

The finale was a microcosm of the 2020 season for Arizona. They jumped out to an early lead then watched as the bullpen imploded once again with Archie Bradley giving up a two-out, two-run home run to Cody Bellinger tie it in the ninth and Andrew Chafin serving up a meatball to DBack killer Mookie Betts in the 11th.

Bellinger went 3 for 5 with two home runs and three RBI. He hit four home runs in the three game series and just feasted on some below average pitching in this series.

David Peralta homered to lead off the game for Arizona, hitting the ball an estimated 474 feet off of Walker Buehler as the DBacks built a 4-2 lead after two innings, but they could not make it stand.

Los Angeles saved Kenley Jansen for the 11th and he was able to set the DBacks down in order to pick up his 26th save. Arizona left runners on third in the eighth, ninth and tenth innings in the loss.

The once red-hot DBacks (42-39) are now reeling, having lost 8 for 9 as they head out onto the road to take on Philadelphia (50-30) and Kansas City (45-38).

                June 26-29: ARIZONA (45-40) @ PHILADELPHIA (51-33)

                June 26: Phillies 8, DBacks 3
                June 27: DBacks 11, Phillies 6
                June 28: DBacks 7, Phillies 3
                June 29: DBacks 13, Phillies 1

Just when you thought that the season was slipping away from the DBacks as they dropped eight of nine, they explode for 31 runs over the final three games of their weekend series in Philadelphia, crushing the previously red-hot Phillies in taking three of four to open their road trip.

In the opener, the Phillies hit six home runs as they crushed the DBacks 8-3. Didi Gregorius hit two home runs and drove in three in the victory as the Phillies won their eighth straight and the DBacks lost their sixth straight.

The Phillies got the party started in the second off of starter Mike Leake as Gregorius hit a long two-run home run to right. Leake would then leave the game with an undisclosed injury with Merrill Kelly coming on. Bryce Harper hit a home run to dead center off of Kelly in the third to make it 3-0.

Eduardo Escobar hit the first of his two home runs in the fourth off of starter Aaron Nola to get the DBacks on the board.

The Phillies would go deep again in the sixth with Andrew McCutchen unloading on a Guerra slider for a two-run shot. Scott Kingery went deep on the very next pitch to make it 6-1.

Chaz Roe came on in the seventh and gave up home runs to Gregorius, his 20th on the year and second of the game, and J.T. Realmuto.

Ketel Marte and Eduardo Escobar would each hit solo home runs in the eighth as the teams combined for nine home runs in the game.

Aaron Nola (8-5) picked up the win, going eight innings and allowing the three runs on eight hits. Mike Leake (4-4) took the loss after going just one plus innings and leaving the game.

[b]Notes:[b] The DBacks said that Mike Leake’s injury was a blister that broke open and he will likely be out a few days.

The DBacks scored six times in the top of the first on Saturday afternoon, then cruised to an 11-6 victory over the Phillies to put an end to their six game losing streak. Eduardo Escobar remains white hot, going 4 for 6 with a double, home run and 2 RBI in the victory.

The DBacks set ten men to the plate in the first, chasing starter Zack Wheeler after he could only record two outs. Josh Rojas keyed the first inning rally with a three-run home run to right, his first on the season.

The Phillies tried to make it interesting as they hit three more home runs after hitting six on Friday night. Didi Gregorius and Bryce Harper each homered again for the first place Phillies.

Arizona pounded out a season highs in runs (11) and hits (21) after struggling offensively for the past two weeks. Ketel Marte also added four hits with a double, home run and two RBI.

On Sunday afternoon, the DBacks brought the big bats again, hitting three home runs in a 7-3 victory over the powerful Phillies. Ketel Marte homered for the third straight game, going 3 for 5 with a triple and home run as the DBacks won their second straight.

Arizona grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning off of Zach Eflin on a Kole Calhoun RBI double and Eduardo Escobar RBI single. They would extend that lead to 3-0 in the third on a David Peralta sacrifice fly, scoring Ketel Marte.

A Josh Harrison RBI single in the fourth with two outs got the Phillies on the board against Zac Gallen. Gallen (7-5) went seven innings, allowing that one run on six hits. He struck out four and walked one.

Starling Marte led off the fifth with a solo home run, his 4th on the season. Daulton Varsho then blasted a two-run shot into the second deck in right in the sixth to make it 6-1. Ketel Marte got into the party in the seventh with a solo home run off of Jose Alvaraez, his 17th on the campaign.

Scott Kingery hit a two-run home run off of Yoan Lopez in the eighth but it was too little, too late for the Phillies. Zach Eflin (7-5) took the loss, leaving in the fifth with back tightness after allowing four runs on seven hits.

The finale was another slugfest for the DBacks as they pounded out 17 hits and a season high 13 runs in a 13-1 victory over the Phillies. David Peralta went 3 for 6 with two home runs, including a second inning grand slam, and drove in six as the DBacks won their third straight game.

Nick Ahmed went 4 for 4 with two doubles, a home run, two RBI and three runs scored. He went 12 for 17 in the series just killing the Phillies pitching in the four game series.

Jon Duplantier (4-3) tossed a relatively stress free complete game, allowing one run on seven hits. He struck out three and walked one. He also added a base hit in going 1 for 5 from the plate.

The DBacks will now travel to Kansas City (45-40) for a two game series with the first-place Royals.

                Series27_20
All of the sudden, Ketel Marte and the DBacks are red-hot.

                    June 30 – July 1: ARIZONA (46-41) @ KANSAS CITY (46-41)

                    June 30: Royals 7, DBacks 4
                    July 1: DBacks 3, Royals 0

The Dbacks earned a split of a quick two game series at Kaufmann Stadium in Kansas City.

The Royals used a five run second inning on Tuesday evening to help them to a 7-4 victory over the DBacks at Kaufmann Stadium. Maikel Franco went 2 for 4 with a double, home run and two RBI to lead the Royals.

Kansas City got home runs from Jorge Soar and Maikel Franco in the second inning off of Madison Bumgarner to build an early 5-0 cushion.

Carson Kelly homered to left in the fifth. That two-run shot was his eighth on the season and cut the Royals lead to 5-2.

Jorge Solar hit a pop fly to left with two outs in the bottom of the fifth that David Peralta lost in the sky, allowing Hunter Dozier to score to make it 6-2. They would add a sacrifice fly in the sixth to put themselves up by five.

David Peralta hit a two-run home run to right in the eighth, his 21st on the season as the DBacks tried to claw their way back into this one. But Ian Kennedy came in to lock down a four-out save, his 23rd on the season for Kansas City.

Madison Bumgarner (7-6) went the distance in the loss. He allowed seven runs on ten hits, while striking out five and walking one.

IN the finale, Mike Leake tossed seven shutout innings and got some help from Jake Lamb to pitch the DBacks to a 3-0 victory. Lamb went 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBI.

Leake (5-4) who lasted just one inning in his last start, tossed seven shut out innings and pitched very well. He scattered eight hits and struck out three while allowing no walks.

A David Peralta RBI single in the fifth got the DBacks on the board. Jake Lamb then connected on a two-run shot to center in the sixth to give them a nice cushion.

Hector Rondon worked a perfect eighth and Archie Bradley struck out two in the ninth to pick up his 18th save.

Arizona now returns home for a quick three game home stand against the Cincinnati Reds (49-39) before a six game road trip finish out the first half of the season. The Reds hold the second National League Wild Card spot, leading the DBacks by three games.

                      June 3-5: CINCINNATI (51-40) @ ARIZONA (47-43)

                      June 3: DBacks 5, Reds 3
                      June 4: Reds 4, DBacks 1
                      June 5: Reds 13, DBacks 9

The Cincinnati Reds came into Chase Field and took two of three from the DBacks before the DBacks head out onto the road to end the first half.

In the opener, the DBacks walked it off as Daulton Varsho hit the first pitch that he saw over the pool in right center to send the fans home happy as the DBacks won 5-3.

Arizona jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings on a Kole Calhoun sacrifice fly and Jake Lamb RBI double.

Luke Weaver carried a no hitter into the sixth before getting touched up and ending up with a no decision. The Reds got an RBI double from Joey Votto in the sixth and RBI singles from Nick Castellanos and Tucker Barnhart in the seventh to tie the game at 3-3.

The Reds had a chance to take the lead in the ninth but Hector Rondon came on in relief of Yoan Lopez to get the final out with the bases loaded.

Cody Reed came on to start the bottom of the ninth for the Reds, but had to leave the game with an injury after he got Kole Calhoun to strikeout. Raisel Iglesius came on and gave up a single to Eduardo Escobar and then the game winning home run to Daulton Varsho. It was the rookie Varsho’s sixth home run on the season.

Notes: The Texas Rangers made a move to the future on Thursday, trading second baseman Rougned Odor and right fielder Joey Gallo to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for 24-year-old starter Shane Bieber. Beiber was (8-5, 3.17 ERA) in 2020 for a Rangers team mired in fourth place in the AL West. Gallo was hitting .254 with 15 home runs and 35 RBI, while Odor was hitting just .223 with 16 home runs and 44 RBI.

The Reds won 4-1 on Independence Day behind a strong team effort on the mound. Robert Stephenson picked up the victory, working 1 1/3 innings and striking out three.

Shogo Akiyama went 1 for 3 with a home run. His solo shot in the eighth gave the Reds some breathing room.

Michael Lorezen came on in the ninth to pick up the save, his 24th on the season. The Reds used five pitchers and held the DBacks to just one run on six hits. They struck out twelve and did not issue a walk. The DBacks left five runners on base, all in scoring position.

The Reds won the finale in a slugfest, hitting seven home runs in a 13-9 victory on Sunday afternoon. Eugenio Suarez homered twice and drove in three to help pace the Reds to the victory in the rubber match.

Cincinnati would jump out to a 6-0 lead in this one after an inning and a half on three two-run home runs, but Arizona rallied, scoring the next eight runs to go up 8-6 after four innings.

Jon Duplantier could not make it through the fifth though, giving up a game tying two-run home run to Jesse Winkler. Merrill Kelly would come on and give up a solo home run to Eugenio Suarez in the sixth to put the Reds up 9-8 and make Kelly the pitcher of record.

The Reds would add two in the eighth and two in the ninth as they pounded out 17 hits, 10 of which went for extra bases including the seven home runs.

Arizona scored nine runs and had 15 hits, nine for extra bases with three being home runs. Eduardo Escobar remained white-hot as he went 4 for 5 with three doubles, a home run and 2 RBI. David Peralta homered and went 3 for 3 with two RBI before leaving the game in the fourth with what appeared to be a triceps injury.

Arizona (47-43) will now head to Colorado (51-38) and Chicago to take on the White Sox (44-47) to close out the first half of the 2020 season. The DBacks are just one game out of last place in the highly competitive NL West as the Giants and Padres are both (46-44).

                        July 6-8: ARIZONA (49-44) @ COLORADO (52-40)

                        July 6: DBacks 6, Rockies 3
                        July 7: DBacks 9, Rockies 3
                        July 8: Rockies 4, DBacks 0

The Diamondbacks took two of three from Colorado to inch a bit closer in the National League West.

The DBacks rallied in the opener to secure a 6-3 victory at Coors Field. David Peralta keyed the victory going 4 for 5 with a double, home run and three runs scored.

The Rockies took a 2-0 lead after three innings thanks to a Ryan McMahon first inning solo home run and a McMahon sacrifice fly in the third, scoring Trevor Story.

David Peralta homered to start the fourth, his team leading 22nd on the season. Eduardo Escobar would tie it up with an RBI double in the sixth. Dalton Varsho’s RBI single in the sixth put the DBacks up for good 3-2.

The DBacks would add some insurance runs in the eighth as they sent nine men to the plate, scoring three times. Eduardo Escobar had an RBI single. Kole Calhoun lined an RBI double, and Starling Marte added an RBI single.

The Rockies would get one back in the bottom of the ninth on a long David Dahl solo home run to open the inning. But Andrew Chafin came on and shut the door to earn his second save. Madison Bumgarner (8-6) picked up the win, pitching 5 1/3 before leaving with some abdominal discomfort. He allowed two runs on five base hits and struck out five.

Notes: In an interesting trade, the Dodgers have sent 25-year-old starting pitcher Walker Buehler to division rival San Diego in exchange for 24-year-old starter Chris Paddack and closer Emilio Pagan.

The DBacks won again on Tuesday evening, pounding out 14 hits as they took a 9-3 decision over the Rockies in a game that was delayed by a 90 minute rain delay in the fifth inning. Kole Calhoun was the star in this one, hitting for the cycle and driving in five runs to help pace the DBacks.

Mike Leake (6-4) earned the win, allowing three runs on five hits in five plus innings. He was lifted for Hector Rondon following the rain delay. Rondon worked two scoreless innings and Yoan Lopez finished with two solid innings to pick up the save, his second.

Calhoun came to the plate in the ninth with the bases loaded and needing a triple for the cycle after he doubled in the second, homered in the fourth and singled in the eighth. Jake McGee threw a fastball that Calhoun lined over second baseman Ryan McMahon’s glove and it rolled all the way to the wall in right center allowing Calhoun to cruise into third with the bases clearing triple.

Daulton Varsho continued his great rookie campaign, homering and driving in two as he went 2 for 5.

The finale featured a sparkling pitching performance from John Gray as the Rockies shutout the DBacks 4-0. Gray picked up his National League leading tenth win, tossing 7 1/3 innings and scattering six hits while striking out seven and walking two.

The Rockies would get all the offense that they would need in the first inning on a Daniel Murphy two-run double. They would add a couple of insurance runs in the eighth as Nolan Arenado hit a two-run home run to center off of Chaz Roe.

Luke Weaver (7-5) took the loss despite pitching well. He went six innings allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven.

The DBacks now head to Chicago for a three game series with the White Sox (44-49) to close out the first half of the 2020.

                          July 10-12: ARIZONA (50-46) @ CHICAGO (46-50)

                          July 10: DBacks 6, White Sox 4
                          July 11: White Sox 5, DBacks 3
                          July 12: White Sox 5, DBacks 2

The DBacks bats went cold in the Windy City as they dropped two of three to end the first half of the season.

The DBacks used the long ball in the opener, hitting four home runs in a 6-4 victory on the South Side. Jake Lamb went 2 for 4, hitting two solo home runs to lead the charge.

The DBacks would score twice in the first on a big error by Yoan Moncada that allowed both David Peralta and Nick Ahmed to score. Leury Garcia would get one back in the nottom of the frame with an RBI single to center.

Kole Calhoun and Starling Marte each hit solo home runs in the fourth to put the DBacks up 4-1.

Jose Abreu hit a two-run home run off of Zac Gallen in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-3. The teams would exchange solo home runs in the sixth with Lamb hitting his fourth on the season and Yoan Moncada blasting his 13th on the year.

Hector Rondon came on in relief of Zac Gallen and was excellent, working three scoreless innings of relief. Archie Bradley came on in the ninth to nail down his 19th save. He got a little breathing room when Jake Lamb homered to open the ninth, his second of the game and fifth on the season.

Gallen (8-6) earned the win, working five innings and allowing four runs on eight hits. He struck out six.

The White Sox rebounded on Saturday afternoon thanks to a three run fifth inning as they held off a late DBacks rally to win 5-3. Michael Kopach, making his 2020 debut, was excellent, working 7 2/3 innings to pick up the win.

The White Sox grabbed an early lead in the second on a solo home run from Eloy Jiminez. It was his 15th in the season. They would add three in the fifth thanks mainly to a big two-out, two-run double from Leury Garcia. Luis Basabe would add an RBI double in the seventh with a big insurance run.

Arizona would finally get on the board in the eighth and a Ketel Marte RBI double and David Peralta two-run double that would chase starter Michael Kopach from the game. Aaron Bummer came on in relief and struck out Kole Calhoun to end the eighth.

Alex Colome worked a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up the save, his 22nd as the White Sox ended a three game skid.

Jon Duplantier (4-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings of work.

Notes: The Minnesota Twins acquired starting pitcher Mike Cleavinger from the Texas Rangers in exchange for right fielder Max Kepler. The Twins also received Isiah Kiner-Falefa in the deal. Cleavinger was (5-10) with an ERA of 3.97 in 115 2/3 innings of work in 2020. He moves to the top of the Twins rotation. Kepler was hitting .246 with 14 home runs and 43 RBI in 309 at bats for the Twins and is a nice addition for the Rangers under team control for three more seasons.

In the finale, the White Sox scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to rally for a 5-2 victory to take the rubber match of the three game weekend series to end the first half of the season. The key blow was a two run blast to left by Yasmani Grandal off of Andrew Chafin that gave the White Sox the lead.

Madison Bumgarner picked up the no decision despite tossing 6 2/3 shut out innings.

Danny Mendick came into the series hitting below .200 and just torched the DBacks pitching. On Sunday he went 3 for 3 with a home run, two RBI and a walk.

Nick Ahmed went 3 for 4, collecting three of the DBacks seven hits on the sun splashed afternoon on Chicago’s south side.

The DBacks head into the All-Star Break at (50-46) and still very much alive in both the NL West race and the NL Wild Card chase.

Los Angeles, CA (AP) – Oakland’s Matt Chapman won the 2020 State Farm Home Run Derby as he put on a power display at Dodger Stadium, belting 70 home runs as he cruised to his first ever Derby win.

Chapman, the 8th seeded player, defeated the top seeded Anthony Rendon 22-19 to open the evening. He then hit 26 home runs in the semifinals, defeating the Tigers Jonathan Schoop 26-20.

In the finals, he took care of Nolan Arenado, the seventh seed, 22-21. It was an impressive display of power throughout the evening. One of the most exciting battles took place in the opening round as Dodger Cody Bellinger hit 24 home runs, and then Bryce Harper homered on his final 13 swings to defeat him 25-24.
