Re: A New Era | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show)
Hernandez's Late Homer Snaps Twins Win Streak
The Toronto Blue Jays handed the Minnesota Twins their first loss in nine games with a 6-5 victory. Teoscar Hernandez's second home run of the ball game in the top of the ninth inning proved to be the difference maker between the two first-placed teams.
Toronto jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a solo home run off the bat of outfielder Billy McKinney. The homer marked McKinney's 21st of the season, setting a new career high in what is turning out to be quite the breakout season. Teoscar Hernandez and Rowdy Tellez both went deep as Toronto staked themselves to a 5-1 lead after four innings of play.
However, the Twins were not going down without a fight. After coming from behind to claim the victory in last night's ballgame, Minnesota answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to a Mitch Garver two-run blast. The breakout catcher wasn't done there, as he added another solo blast in the bottom of the seventh inning as part of a two-run inning that tied the game at 5-5. This set the stage for Hernandez, who took a hanging slider from Twins reliever Cory Gearrin into the left field seats for the decisive blow.
The Blue Jays and Twins go back at it in the third game of their four game series tomorrow afternoon. It will be the battle of international starters tomorrow as Korean Hyun-Jin Ryu gets the ball for the Blue Jays against Minnesota's Kenta Maeda from Japan.

Re: A New Era | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show)
Blue Jays Waste Stellar Start From Ryu, Guerrero Jr. Error Hands Twins Victory
A Vladimir Guerrero Jr. defensive error in the bottom of the eighth inning set the stage for the Minnesota Twins to pull off a late come-back win in extra innings on Saturday afternoon.
Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning, a routine ground-ball destined to be turned into a double-play ended up rattling against the left field fence after an errant throw by Guerrero Jr. On the play, pinch runner Jake Cave came all the way around from first to score the tying run, effectively wasting a masterful outing from Blue Jays ace Hyun-Jin Ryu.
Ryu, making his final start before the All Star break, showed exactly why the Blue Jays paid a hefty price tag to land him this past offseason. The former Los Angeles Dodger turned in seven innings of two-hit work, keeping a powerful Minnesota offence at bay with nine strikeouts. Unfortunately for Ryu, he will be tagged with a no-decision after surrendering just one unearned run.
Minnesota Twins starter Kenta Maeda was equally as dominant on Saturday afternoon, holding the Blue Jays lineup to just one run on four hits over six innings of work. The Blue Jays' lone run came in the second inning, when Teoscar Hernandez continued his red-hot week at the plate with his 26th homer of the season -- a monster blast into the second deck in left field.
With a Blue Jays bullpen that had been already running on fumes, manager Charlie Montoyo called upon closer Ken Giles in the ninth and tenth inning, but a base hit from Lamont Wade Jr. in the tenth inning landed just beyond the reach of Hernandez in center field, handing the Twins their 58th win of the season in walk-off fashion.
The Blue Jays will aim to secure a split of the four game series tomorrow afternoon as both clubs play their final game before the All Star break.

Re: A New Era | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show)
Seventh inning Outburst Leads Blue Jays To Victory
Jake Odorizzi was wheeling and dealing and the Minnesota Twins looked like they were headed to their 59th win of the season before a seven-run 7th inning from the Toronto Blue Jays put a halt to any premature celebration plans.
In the final game for both teams prior to the All-Star break, an error by Twins right fielder Max Kepler opened the flood gates for Toronto's offence, who had already scored three runs in the inning prior to Teoscar Hernandez crushing a grand-slam to cap off the offensive explosion. Hernandez's homer was his team-leading 27th homer of the season, while Logan Warmoth, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Billy McKinney both added RBIs in the inning.
Minnesota had been stoked out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a Nelson Cruz homer and RBI single from Alex Avila. Toronto starter Chase Anderson worked through 5 1/3 innings, but was worked hard by the Minnesota lineup. The Twins' were relentless at the plate, fouling off pitch after pitch. In the end, Anderson finished the game with eight strikeouts.
Twins starter Jake Odorizzi matched Anderson pitch-for-pitch and was utterly dominant up until the seventh inning. Odorizzi had managed to keep the Blue Jays off the scoreboard heading into the seventh, but a walk to Reuben Tejada kicked off a offensive on-slaught for the Blue Jays. Odorizzi was charged with two of the seven runs that would come around to score in the inning, handing the Twins ace a no-decision.
The Blue Jays and Twins will get some rest as they both enjoy a week off as All Star festivities take place. The Blue Jays are hoping that the extra week will give their players some rest and hopefully see the return of young stars such as Bo Bichette and Cavan Biggio.

As the 2020 MLB season rolls into the All Star break, the playoff races across the league are starting to slowly take shape. With the exception of some of the league's biggest stars, players across the league will get a much-needed rest.
In the American League, the Toronto Blue Jays have surprised many with an impressive 61-36 record through the first half of the regular season. Toronto is currently in a neck-and-neck battle with the powerhouse New York Yankees at the top of the American League East standings. Entering the break, New York trails the Blue Jays by two games. Aside from the top two teams in the AL East, the rest of the division has failed to put up a fight. The Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, and Baltimore Orioles all hold records below .500, with the Orioles competing for the worst record in all of baseball.
Another surprising team, the Minnesota Twins, hold a solid six game lead over the Chicago White Sox in the American League Central. As it stands, the White Sox appear to be the only threat for the Twins in the playoff race. Minnesota has been lead by a strong offensive performance in the first half, pushing across 473 runs on their way to a 58-40 record.
The race isn't as close in the American League West, with the Houston Astros once again running away with the division. The Astros are the owners of an American League-best 64-31 record and sit a comfortable 10.5 games ahead of the Los Angeles Angels. Those same Angels hold the second American League Wild Card spot, with the New York Yankees currently holding to the top wild card spot in the American League.
Over in the National League, there are fewer surprises.
The Atlanta Braves hold a 5.5 game lead over the New York Mets in the National League East standings. Atlanta has been elite at preventing teams from scoring runs against them, allowing only 359 runs to cross the plate while their team is in the field. The Mets themselves currently sit tied with the Cincinnati Reds for the second National League Wild Card spot.
The Chicago Cubs may be the biggest surprise in the National League. Chicago currently leads a weak National League Central division with a 49-37 record. The National League Central holds two of the league's worst teams this season. The Pittsburgh Pirates are the owners of an awful 26-70 record while the St. Louis Cardinals have run into some unexpected struggles and currently hold a sub-par 43-54 record.
The National League West is a different story all together. The San Diego Padres sit 15.5 games back of the first place Los Angeles Dodgers, but it's no fault of their own. The Padres own an underwhelming 50-47 record but Los Angeles has been on an absolute tear since the first pitch of the 2020 season. The Dodgers hold an MLB-best 65-31 record and look poised to comfortably make the playoffs once again this season.
