Ospreys Get a Much Needed Win
”Beat Savannah St. for 2nd time this year."
    February 12, 2008

    Code:
                     1st 2nd Total
    Savannah St. 27 22 49
    North Florida 40 37 77
In a rematch of a game played earlier this year, nothing was different. The outcome was the same, and the game played pretty much the same way. Savannah St. was again no match for North Florida, even without James Grimball.

    Coach Matthews’ Minute
“It’s nice to finally go out there and get a win. The guys needed to go out there and get a game to boost the morale back up, and I hope that this game did it for them. The only thing I wish that was different about this game was that I wish it was a conference game. We could really use a conference victory right now because we have been falling pretty hard..”

      Coach Matthews’ Minute
“This isn’t good at all. We started out 6-0 in conference play, and now we are 7-5. That makes me look really bad, and I don’t like looking bad. We really need to win at least one of our two games next week. If we can manage to do that I think we can win our final two games once we get Grimball back. If not, we’re going to be in trouble in the conference tournament, and will probably have to play Belmont in the 2nd round.”

Another Great Game Between Ospreys and Owls
”UNF wins battle of the birds."
        February 21, 2008

        Code:
                         1st 2nd Total
        Kennesaw St. 37 39 76
        North Florida 40 39 79
For the 2nd time this year, the game between North Florida and Kennesaw St. went down to the wire. Last time the Owls had a chance to win it at the buzzer, this time they had a chance to tie the game. Ronell Wooten couldn’t hit the 3, giving the Ospreys the “W.” Both teams were missing their best players, James Grimball for North Florida and Shaun Stegall for Kennesaw St. who scored 22 pts the last time these two teams met.

        Coach Matthews’ Minute
“Whew! Man we needed that win B.A.D. I don’t know about you guys, but I want to get the 3 seed for the conference tournament. After what Belmont did to us a couple weeks ago I DO NOT want to have to play them in the 2nd round. Hopefully we can win these last 3 games….hopfully.”

        North Florida Ospreys Player Stats
        Justin Cecil – 17 pts, 9 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl
        Tom Hammonds – 17 pts, 6 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl
        Brent Wood – 17 pts, 1 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl
        Chris Timberlake – 13 pts, 8 ast, 2 reb

        Kennesaw State Owls Player Stats
        Zach Berry – 0 pts, 2 reb, 11 ast
        Ryan Daugherty – 16 pts, 4 reb, 1 ast
        Ronell Wooten – 19 pts, 2 reb, 2 ast

Re: Coaching Career of Chris Matthews (CH2k8)

So yeah, sorry guys but I played the last 3 games without posting anything. You didn't miss much, just the collapse of the century. Seriously I went from 6-0 in conference to 8-8. 2-8 in the last 10 games = bad. Here's the scores....

          Mercer - 78
          North Florida - 73

*Grimball was back for these two games, but his confidence was like 10*

          North Florida - 56
          Stetson - 78

          North Florida - 66
          Florida Gulf Coast - 79

          --
Up next will be an interview with Coach Matthews, followed by the conference tournament preview. Thanks for following!

            Interview With Coach Matthews

Now that the regular season is over, what are your thoughts on your performance this year?

Ummm….well let’s see. We might have had the collapse of the century there Mike. We started out 11-7 with a 6-0 record in conference. We should have won 20 games the way we were playing. It’s a shame our best player missed over 10 games this season, because I think we could have easily won 20 games.

How do you think you will do in the conference tournament?

We’re going to win it all. If our team plays like they did earlier in the year, no one in that tournament can stop us. If not, then we might have problems.

Has North Florida had any success recruiting this year, you’ve remained awful quiet about it and has many fans doubting the team next year as well?

Well, as you all know we are losing two players next year….Chris Timberlake and James Grimball. Those are two starters, and the two leaders of our team. We have 3 scholarships available, and so far it looks like we’re going to have one player commit. Let’s just say there’s going to be a new big man on campus next year, but my focus right now is the tournament so you’re going to have to wait on that.

What do you have to say to all the criticism that has been flying around the media lately? As you know many are saying you had beginners luck and think that you should be fired before the team gets in even worse shape.

I say f-you to them. This team was projected by those same people to win maybe 5 games this year, and we won 3 times that. These people also projected that we wouldn’t even be in the conference tournament, guess what they were wrong again. This is a very young team, and some of you experts need to actually learn something before you go making ish up.

                  Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Preview
                  2008 Edition

                  (1) Belmont vs. (8) Jacksonville
Season Matchup Results: 2/7, Belmont beat Jacksonville at home 63-57
Insight: Belmont is the clear favorite to not only win this game, but to represent this conference in the NCAA tournament. They are projected as a 13 seed in most brackets at the moment. Jacksonville does have a very good team, and could surprise a lot of people in this game.
                  Prediction: Belmont

                  (4) Lipscomb vs. (5) North Florida
Season Matchup Results: Lipscomb beat North Florida at home, 73-67
Insight: While it appears that Lipscomb should be favorite, they barely beat North Florida at home when UNF didn’t have their best player, James Grimball. Lipscomb also has no notable wins outside of conference this season, and UNF had two huge wins to start the season. On a neutral court, we think the Ospreys can win this game.
                  Prediction: North Florida

                  (3) East Tennessee St. vs. (6) SC Upstate
Season Matchup Results: 1/5, E. Tenn St. beat SC Upstate at home, 56-53
3/1, SC Upstate beat E. Tenn St. at home, 87-81
Insight: SC Upstate beat the Bucs just 4 days ago, but again this is going to be on a neutral court. In the end we think that East Tennessee St. is the dark horse to somehow win this thing, they just have too much firepower to not have a good shot. If Pigram is on, they go to the finals easy.
                  Prediction: East Tennessee St.

                  (2) Gardner-Webb vs. (7) Mercer
Season Matchup Results2/7, Gardner-Webb beat Mercer at home, 82-72
Insight: Gardner-Webb might have some trouble with Mercer. Mercer’s starting SF Calvin Henry, who is averaging 7.3 pts and 7.2 rebounds per game will miss the entire tournament…..but Mercer also has the conference’s leading scorer in sophomore PG James Florence. We still think Gardner-Webb wins a close game.
                  Prediction: Gardner Webb

Januska Leads North Florida to 2nd Round
                    ”Ospreys hold off Lipscomb."
                    A-Sun Conference Tournament – Round 1

                    Code:
                                     1st 2nd Total
                    North Florida 43 44 87
                    Lipscomb 32 46 78
North Florida started out extremely slow. They only had 2 points after seven minutes of play. You could hear coach Matthews screaming during a timeout that someone had to step up, and that man was Stan Januska. The Ospreys had been losing the majority of the half until Januska caught fire. He wound up scoring 17 of UNF’s 43 points in the first half, and also played a key role by making some key shots down the stretch when Lipscomb was coming back. The Bisons actually took the lead back with 4 minutes to go, but North Florida stepped it up and got the job done.

                    Coach Matthews’ Minute
“THAT….WAS….AWESOME!!!! Seriously man, big ups to Stan the Man tonight. That dude is gonna get laid, motha buzzaaaaa! But in all seriousness, we played really well, and finally won a game. It’s not getting easier though, we have Belmont next.”

                        Belmont 45 51 96
North Florida did what not one person predicted they would do, beat Belmont. While Belmont has a very good record (21-10) and an RPI of 62, this loss probably cost them a place in the NCAA tournament. You could see the emotion pouring from that team as the clocks ticked down. North Florida came out fired up, you could tell that Coach Matthews had them motivated. One must wonder what he said to them, but it probably isn’t appropriate for this story. North Florida led almost the entire game, with the only scare being when Belmont cut the lead to 3 with under 2:00 to go.

                        Coach Matthews’ Minute
“Payback, my friends, is a bitch. You do not embarrass Coach Matthews or his team and just get away with it. East Tennessee St. is next on the chopping blocks, you better believe we’re going to come out gunning in that game as well."

                          Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament
                          2008 Conference Championship Preview

                          The Matchup
                          vs.

In their only meeting this year, East Tennessee St. handed North Florida their first conference loss after the Ospreys had started out 6-0 in conference. UNF's lone big man James Grimball only played 19 minutes due to foul trouble, and as he proved against Belmont he can still make an impact in a short amount of time. We expect this to be a great game, but as we predicted East Tennessee State was the dark horse to win this tournament, and we stand by that prediction.

                          Players to Watch
Courtney Pigram is one of the best players in the conference. He was 3rd in the conference in scoring, averaging 16 ppg. He has been dominant in this tournament, scoring 32 points against SC Upstate, and added a team high 20 points against Gardner-Webb.

Brent Wood was a surprise player this year. He had a breakout year, and after playing the first 10 or so games off of the bench, earned himself a starting spot as a freshman. Wood was 4th in the conference in scoring, averaging 15.9 ppg. That number is misleading however, because he did come off the bench the first 10 games of the season. Brent has had a great tournament, putting up 18 and 19 points in the two games. If North Florida wants to win this game, he is going to have to be on fire.

This is what March is all about, great games with very high stakes. Both of these teams needed a win to get into the big dance, and only one came out victorious. North Florida came out similarly to how they did against Belmont, and got to the early lead. They went cold as quickly as they went hot during the 2nd half, and couldn’t hit anything. Sharpshooter Brent Wood really struggled to find his rhythm. The game was going back in forth in the waning moments, with the Bucs taking the lead with 3:10 to play.

After going back and forth, Hammonds hit a huge shot with 14 seconds to play to make it a one point game. Courtney Pigram missed the first half of a one-and-one, so North Florida had a chance for the win. After rushing the ball down the court, Brent Wood let an 18 footer go, and it clanked off of the side of the rim. North Florida’s unimaginable season ended in the worst way possible. Mike Smith was the hero for the Bucs. UNF did a great job limiting Pigram’s opportunities, and Smith stepped up with 25 points to lead the way.

--Rhode Island was in the Top-25 much of the year, and had they not lost in their conference tournament, they could have easily been a 5 or 6 seed.

                                Surprises
There is no way Toledo should be a 12 seed. Fresno St. deserved to be there more than Toledo.

                                (1) Memphis vs. (2) Georgetown
No surprises here really, even though it's going to be difficult for both teams. Both Stanford or Clemson could give Memphis a run for their money, but we think they win. Gonzaga and Connecticut are both very good 3 and 6 seed teams who could very well knock off Georgetown.
