Re: The Legacy of Jai Morris(CH 2k8)

    NCAA Tournament Tree:

    EAST:
    1 Clemson
    16 Play-in Game

    8 Memphis
    9 Miss St.

    5 Michigan St.
    12 Liberty

    4 Wake Forest
    13 Idaho

    6 Pittsburg
    11 Texas

    3 Okalahoma
    14 Cleveland St.

    7 Columbia
    10 Portland St.

    2 Auburn
    16 Saint Louis

    Upset Alert:

    Liberty vs. Michigan State
Backed by the best freshman in the country Seth Curry who averages 24.6 points a game, the Flames have upset big time teams this year, Oklahoma and Duke. Look for a great game out in the east.

    Best possible game:
Clemson vs. Oklahoma to go to the Final Four
Both teams are very evenly matched and the only team capable of beating mighty Clemson is the Sooners. Look for Blake Griffin to prove he is the next #1 overall pick.

    Final Four predictions: 1 Clemson

    South:
    1 UNC
    16 Boston U

    8 Baylor
    9 Temple

    5 Florida
    12 Holy Cross-

    4 LSU
    13 Siena

    6 Tennessee
    11 Notre Dame

    3 Auburn
    14 Sam Houston St.

    7 Maryland
    10 South Alabama

    2 UAB
    15 Florida Int’l

    Upset Alert:
Notre Dame over Tennessee, not much of an upset, but seeding wise it is. Luke Harangody is in a class of his own as the Nations top scorer and one of the best rebounders he makes everyone around him better.

    Best Possible Match up:
The NCAA did it for us; look for Baylor vs. Temple to be one of the best games of the tournament. Christmas vs. Jerrells will be a big time PG matches up by 2 of the best.

    Final Four Pick: 1 UNC

    Mid West:

    1 Kansas
    16 UC Irvine

    8 Virgina
    9 Troy

    5 Washington
    12 Davidson

    4 Miami
    13 Wagner

    6 Providence
    11 Wisconsin

    3 UCLA
    14 Loyola

    7 Stanford
    10 Ohio St.

    2 Louisville
    16 Towson

Upset Alert: Davidson over Washington, or Wisconsin over Providence. Both could go either way, Wisconsin has a chip on their shoulder as the Big Ten champion being stiffed or All-Star Stephen Curry leads Davidson.

Best Possible Match up: UCLA vs. Louisville in the Quarterfinals, both high tempo, score at will teams with a lot to prove and a lot of success.

    Final Four Pick: UCLA

    West:
    1 Georgetown
    16 Ark-Pine Bluffs

    8 Princeton
    9 Xavier

    5 San Diego St.
    12 Gonzaga

    4 UConn
    13 Tennessee Techs

    6 Duke
    11 Creighton

    3 Syracuse
    14 E Tennessee St.

    7 NC A&T
    10 Arizona

    2 Marquette
    16 Hampton

Upset Alert: Creighton over Duke, lots of firepower for Creighton and more speed and scoring ability. Duke only has size and talent over Creighton, if anything it will be a fun game to watch.

Best Match up: San Diego St vs. UConn or NC A&T vs. Marquette, both Mid-Major teams with something to prove. If they both escape the first round the sky is the limit.

    Final Four Pick: Syracuse.

Clemson draws the #1 overall seed and will be in the East, they place the winner of the play in game between Buffalo and Oakland. Clemson will play along with 4 seed Wake Forest in the East region. Duke pulled a 6 seed in the West; North Carolina drew the #1 seed in the South with Maryland who is a 7 seed. Miami and Virginia both made it in the Mid West, Miami a 4 and Virginia an 8 seed. Georgia Tech was on the Bubble Watch but had theirs burst and will join Florida State as the ACC representatives in the National Invitational Tournament.

The NCAA tournament will begin Tuesday March 18 at the Dayton University arena.

      ESPN.com

Coach Jai Morris and his team are the #1 seed in the East bracket and have a lot of media, and fan pools with them going all the way. However, looking at the region they have a tough road to hoe with quality teams like 2 seed Alabama who have them a scare early in the year, 3 seed Oklahoma and 4 seed Syracuse. ACC rival Wake Forest is in the regional so is Texas and Pittsburg who have been dangerous. If Clemson can escape Oakland, and they will, their opponent will be the winner of the Memphis/Mississippi State game and both of those teams are very good. The team held a press conference from their hotel Wednesday night to address most of the media’s questions.

“We are a team that likes to run up and score on you, weather it’s a dunk, a lay up, a three or a baseline jumper we find a way. And that’s what I love about this team, we go head to the basket every time, we aren’t timid and step back or try to draw a foul, we just make the basket. I will saw we are physical and love contact, but unlike some teams we have played in the ACC we don’t need it to win ball games. And I think that is the #1 reason we are #1. No matter how far we go in the NCAA we cannot hang our heads because we are one of the best teams and we have proven ourselves, my only regret is not having another year of eligibility to play with these guys one more time next season.” That was senior K.C. Rivers; who is going to go out as one of the all time leading scorers in Clemson history.

Freshman star Catalin Baciu, he is one of the leading scorers in the country and is looking to take his abilities to the next level in the NCAA tournament. “#1 seed in the East is an honor for us, I mean we started this year kinda low on the radar and you know we really haven’t looked back since we took the top spot. It’s kind of amazing, you know, to be where we are so soon. Coach Jai told us freshman that we would be in this place, say, junior or senior year if we really worked hard and brought in the right talent but, hey, here we are after year 1. It’s like a dream, you know, that we came this far so soon. I mean, I grew up like and hour from Clemson in Gastonia but I wasn’t really a fan of Clemson or any school like that, I mean my dad loves UNC and some of my family cheers on Wake or State; but Clemson is a very indifferent school to them and when I got the scholarship I was just blown away because I thought it would be somewhere like Appalachian State or East Carolina. But, here we are and a lot of you folk are saying I’m like one of the best, its just wow. I hope Oakland or Buffalo is ready for this train.”

Coach Jai Morris came on last to talk to the media and answer questions, he doesn’t allow his players to take questions much so he was willing to do an extensive interview. “We play hard and fast, I mean we struggle defensively, but we more than make up for it with the scoreboard. We were almost in trouble against Georgia Tech, but hey, they play us tough game in and game out and I love Paul Hewitt for it. I just hope no one watched that game on TV, ha ha. I think we have a fair chance, we don’t like to be cocky but the team has a lot of “swag” as they say and its scary how well these young men understand and how aggressively they feel about winning this whole damn thing. If I was back at Syracuse, who we might play, I would be scared to face us. I really can’t say more than that about us. Any Questions?”

Reporter, “What if you face a team that can shut you down offensvly?”

Jai Morris, “We, I guess you didn’t watch the Georgia Tech game, which is good. We made adjustments and messed their defense sets up, and we applied pressure on the full court trap to slow Mo Miller down because he can get up the court so quick that sometimes we cant set up. They had way too many fast break points and we got lucky.”

Reporter, “How will you fill the void of K.C Rivers if you don’t sign Wes Maki-Tulokis? And how will you handle the Alexis Raji/Catalin Baciu rotation situation, as Raji is one of the highest rated centers and looks like NBA talent now, will he start?”

Coach Morris, “Wow, and well #1 I cannot answer the first question, you should know that but I will to a degree. We have many options available and never discredit Terennce Oglesby, he is a great shooter he just needs a little work around the edges. Plus we have Tanner Smith who can play 2-4 on the court if need be. I love the potential of Alexis Raji, but since you haven’t watched us play Catalin is one of the best centers in the nation in my and many others opinions, and is up for ACC Freshman of the Year and may make the All ACC list. No matter how good Alexis is, he has a lot of work to do to be out Big C. And, say; he is better well then we have a 7 foot center and a 7 foot Power forward.”

Reporter, “ Can you break 120 against Oakland or Buffalo?”

Coach Morris, “Wow, well maybe but I will be happy with a win if it’s 10-9 or 110-109. Thank you but we need to get ready for tomorrows practice.”

Clemson picks up 1st round win over Oakland 84 to 39.

“I guess it was a lopsided game, but they lead 2-0 to begin.” Said senior K.C. Rivers. “It was a good win to get the jitters off, you know? Most times we have come out kind of nervous or so but tonight we came out ready and we felt like this was going to be a fun run and gun kinda game. They were well over matched.” The Tigers went into the “slow” down offense with 2 minutes and 17 seconds to go in the 1st half when Oakland called a timeout to put in their second string, they were down pretty badly and wanted to give their starters a chance. “For a team that had no seniors they played hard and to their best ability from start to finish, and they made the tournament and that is something to be proud of, even better they beat Buffalo to get an NCAA tournament win. I know the scoreboard was a sad sight but I hope to see these guys next year in the tournament because I know they will be back and will be a better team.” Said coach Jai Morris.

Tigers Advance to the Sweet Sixteen beating Memphis 72-55.

“It feels so great to be in the Sweet Sixteen, its something these boys have dreamed of for a long time and it will be cherished all week.” Coach Morris was ecstatic as any player after the game where it was all smiles and happiness in the locker room, you would have guessed it was the moments after a National Title game but no, it was just a win over Memphis to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. The Tigers were on fire early in the game shooting 45% and getting up 27-11 in the first 10 minutes of play. Things cooled down and the Tigers defense and the play of David Potter to stop freshman star Tyreke Evans from blowing up the scoreboard were big advantages for the Clemson Tigers. K.C. Rivers had a lot to say but can be most noted for this line, “Another day, another win; next up is rival Wake Forest.”

Clemson beats Wake for the third time this season.

Demontez Stitt shows off his sills against 1st Team All-ACC Jeff Teague of rival Wake Forest. Catalin Baciu kept the team in it late in the game with his super rebounding ability. “Facing 7’ 2 Ty Walker was hard because he had such a big wingspan where he could reach a lot farther than me, and Chas McFarland is very strong and really beat me up, so it was a battle to rebounds, but I pulled down a good number when it mattered, I hope tomorrow goes the same way.” The team led most of the game but was caught and almost surpassed late in the game when Demontez Stitt hooked up for an alley-op with less than a minute to go to put away the Demon Deacons 75-71.

            Stats

            Walker 6 points, 5 rebounds, 6 blocks, 4 fouls

Notes: McFarland, 4, Woods, 6, and Weaver, 2, all contributed and played the center position for Wake. McFarland added 6 rebounds and a block. Woods 8 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 fouls. Weaver 5 rebounds and 3 blocks.

            #1 Clemson is now 37-1.

Mighty Clemson takes a fall as the last #1 Seeded team loses.

“Its my fault, you can throw it all on me. As the leader of this team I have let us down, I played my worst game of the year in the biggest loss of the year so throw the blame on me.” Said a tearful K.C Rivers. It seemed like Clemson was struggling at all times of the game always fighting to keep the lead and needed big games from Baciu, and Stitt to keep afloat. K.C Rivers was a phantom playing against All-Big East Lavance Fields, and only having two reserves gave Clemson no chance against one of the best teams out of the packed Big East with a loaded bench. “I hate it for these boys, we had a lot of potential and we will be loaded next year as well, I just hope this is a lesson we wont have to learn next year.” Said a sad but hopeful Coach Jai Morris who knows only losing K.C. Rivers means this team will be packed with talent next year.

Coach Jai Morris held the team’s final press conference of the 08/09 season on the campus in Clemson, Sc. The Team suffered a devastating loss in the Elite Eight to Champion runner up Pittsburg. “We had a lot of talent and we had the best chance to go all the way of any team in the country, and that’s the real talk I can give you. We came out flat and we played the weakest we have all season. We maintained a lead for a good amount of time but eventually we ran out of gas in the tank and Pitt was good enough to surpass us. They had a great run and I’m glad the team to beat us went all the way to the Championship game.” Said Coach Jai Morris. His team returns all but one player from this year’s team.

Freshman Catalin Baciu was a big part of this teams success towards the end of the season as he had 25+ points in each of the last 10 games of the season. “We met our match and it wasn’t an oversized match up they were deeper than us and could score at will on fresh legs. DeJuan Blair is a great completion because even though he is small he is still a great player and gets around you and gets rebounds anyway possible. It was the toughest game yet and especially from my standpoint because I couldn’t go out on the wing and give any help defense because of how good they were on the inside. It just wasn’t our game, but we will be back next year and we will be ready for another battle. I hate to lose K.C. but we are all hoping he gets drafted and will have a good career in pro ball. He was a great mentor this year.”

K.C Rivers finishes his career at Clemson University with 14 points a game average and 4th all time in scoring. He was instrumental in the team’s success in his 4 years and was a leader on the court and off the court. He had a very tearful meeting with the team after the final loss and was the last player out of the locker room. “It feels so weird to know my basketball career started near Charlotte, North Carolina and finished there. I never thought this team would go so far and I hope that I was a big part of leading this team this year and I think I was. I can only look back at the big wins, beating Carolina three times and being the #1 team in the Country. We played so many top 25 teams and won almost each game, team like Louisville, UConn, Alabama and every ACC rival were all tough games. I want to pass the Senior Leadership torch to Trevor Booker; I hope he keeps these guys in line like I tried to do this year. I want Demontez to carry this team next year like he did last year, I think he had the sky as a limit with all his ability and he was the best roommate I had in 4 years at Clemson. I want to tell Big C to just keep pounding the rock, and to be the best he can. I hope I get drafted; I will do my best in the workouts and the combine and be a proud alumnus of Clemson University. I want to thank everyone who had helped me to where I am today, and Coach Morris for believing in me.”

The Tigers lose only 1 player in senior K.C Rivers but look to add 3 freshmen Michael Beckley, Alexis Raji and Gerald Schwartz. They also have scholarships offered to Wes Maki-Tulokais, and Junior College Star Neil Worthington. As of now they don’t have any contracts with schools to play non-conference, as Coach Morris wants to build a schedule from scratch and not the one he inherited from Oliver Purnell.

It feels like when The Boston Celtics singed Ray Allen, Kevin Garnet and Paul Pierce. Wes is a sharpshooter from Utah and coming into next year he will be primed to be the #1 shooter on the Clemson squad.

A tall swingman that will help an already tall Clemson team. Neil will have to take a backseat as the team already had Tanner Smith, David Potter, and stud freshman Michael Beckley also at that position. It will be a good pre-season battle in South Carolina.

                      Grant leaves team
                      ESPN.com

Clemson junior Power Forward Jerai Grant has left the team to be with his mother in Maryland. He had not announced plans on if he will play basketball next year or not but it looks like he will be attending Maryland Eastern Shore.

Coach Jai Morris said in an interview, "I wish he the best of luck and his mother is in out thoughts and prayers as she battles and illness. I hope he is able to find the right fit at Maryland Eastern Shore. He is a great player and an even better player."

Jerai finished his career at Clemson with 1.6 points a game average and was most noted for his 9 points against Louisville.

I've been following along but not posting, but I'll be sure to give feedback whenever possible. Quick question, how do you get Catalin Baciu to put up such monster numbers? I feel like if I ever try to spoon-feed one player, it ends up backfiring.

I usually run some PF/C sets and usually he has a knack for being in the right place (High B-ball IQ, I guess) and alot of times he has a sharpshooter 3 ball (Dirk Nowitzki style) so I like to put him up on the wing and have him pump fake and drive for an easy score. Teams like Maryland, BC, UNC with short centers he easily dunks or lays it in over short centers. Its wild, I have never had a C that was so good.

Plus if you wanna be a cheeser you can take a tall center and run the pick and roll for easy dunks all day but I don't do that. Player lock is also fun.
