NICHOLLS STATE MAKES HISTORY, ADVANCE TO FINAL FOUR
Houston, Texas - The Nicholls State Colonels defeated the UCLA Bruins 78-66 today to advance to their first Final Four in school history. The Colonels controlled the game from the start and never looked back, defeating one of the most storied programs in college basketball. Senior Kalu Ager led Nicholls State in scoring with 17 and also grabbed 7 rebounds. Junior Jadee Palmer, playing in his hometown, scored 15 points before fouling out of the game. Freshman Point Guard Prosper Gastel had a huge game with 14 points, 9 assists, 3 rebounds and only 1 turnover.

Gastel and Ager hail from Southern California, and were very excited to play their hometown Bruins. Palmer, Huertas, Almond are from Houston and were on a high from winning such a huge game in their hometown.

The Colonels only shoot 30% and didn't get a single three pointer all game but they held UCLA to 27% shooting from the field and 29% from three point land. The Colonels out-rebounded the Bruins 32-23 and committed 8 turnovers compared to UCLA's 12.

The Colonels will face 1-seed USC in the Final Four. The other semifinal will see 1-seed Connecticut taking on 3-seed Clemson.

        ROAD TO THE FINAL FOUR

        First Round
The Colonels took down #15 Long Island in upstate New York, 107-83. Kalu Ager had 26 points while Jadee Palmer and L.F. Huertas had 21.

USC topped #16 Florida Gulf Coast 92-48.

        Sweet 16
Nicholls State took on #3 Maryland in a nail-bitter. The Terps lead for a good amount of the game but the Colonels stormed back. Regulation was not enough for these two teams, and Nicholls State edged Maryland 91-88 in overtime. Palmer went for 22 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists while Ager scored 20. Prosper Gastel had 9 points, 12 assists, 2 rebounds and 4 steals.

The Trojans faced a tough #5 Gonzaga squad and prevailed 81-78.

        Elite 8
The Colonels handled #9 UCLA 78-66. Nicholls State took an early lead and never looked back. Ager had 17 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals while Gastel had 14 points, 9 assists and 3 rebounds.

Nah, I am going to stay there and see how much success I can get over a 40 year period.

Good luck. It was great to see other small schools (Gonzaga and Butler having some success as well) I am starting to like the idea of staying at a schoool for the 40 yr plan, but not sure it would be possible to do if you were actually playing the conference schedule every year. I am at UC Davis, and as much as I like the Big West I don't think I could do 40 yrs of playing the Big West, maybe if I put recruiting restrictions on myself to keep my team on the same level playing field...

For me probably the best conference for long term staying would be something like the A-10 or WCC, if it wasn't a power conference.

USC spanked me in the Final Four. It was totally expected though. Their team was ridiculous, four seniors, four coaches on the floor, 97 overall. They went on to win the Championship.

I make the non-conference interesting and since I sim every game, I get through the conference schedule very fast. If I was in the A-10 or WCC I would have won a title already since they are mid-majors compared to the Southland which is small.

I hate losing, so the fact that it is realistic that I can go undeafeted is pretty great

Alright, this is the year. Gastel, Parsons, Palmer, Huertas, Thomasson, remember the names! All of my starters (and 7 of the 8 players in my rotation) have game experience and Palmer is a coach on the floor. I was terrified that some of them would leave early to the draft but no one left early. Ager got drafted but he was a senior.

My team is a 92 overall, looking at the other teams this year, Virginia Tech (96) and NC State (95) are the only teams better overall. NC State is young though.

                      CHAMPIONS!!!
NICHOLLS STATE DEFEAT IOWA STATE 96-81

Thibodaux, Louisiana - The Nicholls State Colonels defeated the Iowa State Cyclones 96-81 to capture the first national championship in school history, and also became the first team to capture 40 wins in the history of college basketball. Nicholls State had three back and forth games before the final but took an early lead against the Cyclones and never looked back.

The Colonels did not have an easy road to the Championship. In the first round they dispatched #16 Binghamton 92-48 and in the second round took care of #8 George Washington 79-51 but the Sweet Sixteen would not be so easy. Nicholls State went up against #5 BYU and multiple players were in foul trouble from early on. The Colonels lead the whole game but BYU stormed back after Palmer and Huertas fouled out. The Cougars forced overtime but the Colonels never looked back from there and won 94-87. The Elite 8 saw Nicholls State take on #2 Texas and the Colonels topped their neighbors 91-81. In the Final Four, Nicholls State took on #2 Virginia Tech, arguably the best team in the tournament. Despite having four seniors on the floor (and four coaches on the floor), the Colonels prevailed 80-74. The Hokies were leading for the first 35 minutes of the game until the Colonels took the lead and never lost it. The Colonels were able to limit the incredible shooters from Virginia Tech.

Coach Berger on the win: "I am at a loss for words, this has been the goal since day one."

NOTE: In all of my excitement I advanced to the next season before being able to write down the box scores to get individual player performances. As always I simulated the whole season but I used hoopscast for the tournament.

COACH BERGER ROBBED OF COACH OF THE YEAR AWARD
The Coach of the Year award was given out today. and surprisingly it was given to Iowa State's Greg McDermott. Coach Berger on the decision: "Well I guess the committee that decided this likes coaches that lose in big games. My team won 40 games and the championship, it is just an individual award so it is not that important but still, you have to question if the committee is smoking crack."

A 40-3 record and a national championship, but you lose the coach of the year award to the coach that you BEAT in the national championship?!

Palmer and Huertas graduated and got drafted but everyone else returns. My team is lead by senior C Harlan Thomasson, senior PF Jeromy Almond and junior PG Prosper Gastel. Senior PG Keithan Parsons with start at the two and junior SG Abraham Guinn will start at small forward. Off the bench I have senior C Claude Weaver as my sixth man. Filling out the rotation is sophomore SF Vladimiras Collier, freshman SF Mario Abbott and freshman SG Harold Shropshire. Freshman PF Russ Dodd, senior SG Dakari French and sophomore SG Teddy Lettenberger will see some time off the bench.

Hoping to repeat as champions. My team is a lot older than last year, and Almond and Thomasson are coaches on the floor. I think I have a very good chance to repeat. I looked at other teams that are ranked this year and I don't see any that look better than mine. My team and Connecticut look to be a step above other teams.

Came close to the repeat but Rhode Island was just too good. They started four seniors and a junior and all-around had a better team. Parsons, Thomasson and Weaver got drafted while Almond did not. Gastel also left early and got drafted, I expected that. Guinn went down midway through the season with a broken patella. Collier took his place as a starter for the remainder of the season.

I have a very young team this year. My team is led by senior Abraham Guinn and junior Vladimiras Collier. Sophomore Russ Dodd moves into a starting role while I am starting two freshman, point guard Mikel Rice and Center Herb Wheeler. Freshman center Ervin Evenstar will be the 6th man while sophomore Harold Shropshire, sophomore Mario Abbott and freshman Felipe Woolley fill out the rotation. Junior Teddy Lettenberger will see limited time off the bench.

Don't think I will be able to make much noise this year. My goal is to make it to my fourth straight final four.

Really whack season. Broke my winning streak in conference games and couldn't even win the conference tournament. Got a bad draw having to face Villanova in the Sweet 16. Collier is leaving early but my team next year will be better and more experienced.

                              Re: Nicholls State Legacy

My team is young but they have experience. I am starting three juniors and two sophomores. The juniors will have to step up, SG Harold Shropshire may be the best shooter I have ever had at the two. SF Mario Abbott is very good but undersized. PF Russ Dodd is a beast down low, providing low post defense that I have lacked in the past. PG Mikel Rice is back and will lead the offense while C Herb Wheeler and C Ervin Evenstar will split time at center. Evenstar is the sixth man and the other players in my rotation are senior SG Teddy Lettenberger, freshman SF Sky Rothbart and freshman PF Al Konate. Sophomore PG Felipe Woolley and freshman C Wesley Annen will see limited time off the bench.

I only have one senior on my team (Lettenberger). I don't think this team can win the championship but they are very capable of making the Final Four. If no one leaves early, I will be nasty next year.

Disappointing regular season, lost too many games. Had a good run in the tournament but friggin La Salle was too good, they beat me three times this year. Wheeler went down early in the year and got a medical redshirt. Next year my team will be as good or better than the team that won the Championship.

                                Re: Nicholls State Legacy

We are going to return to glory this year. I am starting three seniors and two juniors, all of them have a lot of game experience and Abbott is a coach on the floor. This is going to be a defensive team but they can also shoot lights out. I have very high expectations for this season, I have my highest pre-season ranking ever. I am starting five future NBA players in Rice, Shropshire, Abbott, Dodd and Evenstar. Off the bench I have sophomore C Herb Wheeler, sophomore PF Al Konate, sophomore SF Sky Rothbart and junior PG Felipe Woolley. Freshman SG Caron Bowen and sophomore C Wesley Annen will see limited time off the bench.

Never been this disappointed in my team. Had a great regular season but couldn't even make the Final Four. Rothbart went down mid-season which lost a little bit of my depth. I can't believe this team didn't go all the way. Dodd, Shropshire and Abbott got drafted.
