Idaho State Loses to Washington 80-89

    IDST 43 37 80
    Washington 43 46 89
The decisive stat in this game was free throws. Washington shot 43 compared to the Bengal's ten. Early on, Washington and Idaho State went back and forth, neither taking a decisive lead. The game was tied 43-43 at the end of the half. Idaho State picked up fouls early in the second half, with starters Morgan, Busma, and Tatum all picking up their third foul within the first two minutes. Backup Center Tom Taylor couldn't rebound or defend as well as Busma, and often seemed lost on defense. This allowed Washington's 5'8 Thomas to grab many offensive rebounds and put them back. In the end, the lead Washington built up while Idaho State's starters were in foul trouble was too much for Idaho State to overcome.
    Leading Scorers
    Washington
    Thomas- 23
    Gaddy- 20
    Pondexter- 12 (2-12 shooting)
    Idaho State
    Kilpatrick- 25
    Busma- 13
    Gilchrest- 12

Good luck running with the Bungals (I mean Bengals)

I grew up in Boise. Huge BSU Fan, now live in Spokane WA, so I edited the rosters so I could start a legacy with Eastern Washington. Hope to see you do well in the Big Sky..

and hope you all the future wins when playing Idaho, but will never cheer for you against my Broncos.

Good luck with recruiting. It will be tough because if there is a 3* or 4* from Idaho they will probably never sign with you with BSU just 4 hours north of ya.

        Interview with Coach Kevin Anderson
        January 1, 2010
Pocatello, ID-- The hiring of coach Kevin Anderson drew a lot of criticism at the beggining of the season. After going 9-7 in conference play last season, fans saw no reason to hire a new coach, especially one with no prior experience coaching. As the season progresses, it seems like fans are starting to support Anderson more. Wins against in-state opponents Idaho and Boise State are the highlights of the season so far. I got a chance to speak with coach Anderson after the loss against Washington. Here's the interview:

Dan Maggard: Coach Anderson, the Bengals went 9-7 in conference play last season, do you think you'll be able to top that?
Kevin Anderson: I think we have the talent to be at the top of the conference, but its up to the players to decide if they want to win.
DM: The team consists of seven seniors. All of them are key players on the team. How tough will next season be with all of them gone?
KA: It'll be really tough. Baldwin and Taylor need to work harder in order to fill the gaps left by the seniors. The only starter returning is Gilchrest, so I'm going have to count on the incoming freshmen next season.
DM: People have criticized your halfcourt offense. Most of your plays end up with Kilpatrick taking a 3. Do you feel like your offense is varied enough?
KA: I don't really see what's wrong with Kilpatrick taking so many threes. He's making 36% of them. Thats really good for the amount of threes he shoots. He does struggle during the end of games though.
DM: Your team is 5-6 so far. Most of the games are against teams that people think should blow out the Bengals. Are you happy with your record?
KA: I feel like we did great during non-conference play. We beat both Boise [State] and Idaho. The whole team was ecstatic after we beat Boise State. We went on a 18-2 ru-
DM: Most people called it a 20-2 run.
KA: OK, 20-2 run to end the game. We were down by double digits, but Kilpatrick nailed three threes in a row, and then Gilchrest made a few jumpers to take the lead. The guys ran the plays correctly, followed through on their shots, and just did everything right.
DM: One last question, who wins the Big Sky tournament?
KA: I'm confident to say that we will win.
DM: Thanks for your time. I hope your prediction comes true.

The crowd was completely silent starting from the 15 minute mark of the first half. North Colorado didn't start bad, and even had a 11-6 lead early. But when the Bengals switched to the 2-3 zone, the Bears were stopped. It was turnover, after turnover, after turnover for the Bears. The game was over before the first half ended.

The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks hold the honor of being Eastern Washington's first victim. Eastern Washington beat Northern Arizona 70-63 to pick up their first win of the season. They are now 1-14.

Eastern Washington Continues to Lose. 90-45
              Idaho State 38 52 90
              E. Washington 26 19 45
Eastern Washington is one of the worst teams in college basketball in this season, and this game shows exactly why. Eastern Washington was 1-15 coming into this game, and are now 1-16. The first quarter of the game was competitive, neither side going up by more than four points. The Eagles were led by their Center Moore, who had the teams first eight points, and their SF Winford. Those two players could not continue carrying the scoring load, as the Eagles collapsed. Valentine, the Eagle's PG, was terrible. The Bengals subbed in the bench with 15 minutes left in the game, and never took them out. With the extra minutes, Baldwin showed that he will be a capable replacement when the seniors leave next season. He had 16 points on 6-6 shooting. Taylor also did well, and had seven points and a block. The Bengals will need this type of play from Baldwin and Taylor next season if they want to stay competitive.

              Key Stats

Idaho State Stops Late Comeback. Win 70-59
                Idaho State 45 25 70
                Portland St. 27 32 59
Idaho State continues with their great conference play, and now are 3-0. The story of every conference game so far is that the game is close for the first few minutes, but then the Bengals go on a huge run to blow out their opponent. This game looked to be the same, and despite foul troubles, Idaho State had an 18 point lead at halftime. Portland State wouldn't give up though, and slowly narrowed to the lead down with suffocating defense. With four minutes left in the game, the lead was down to single digits. The Vikings never got close than that though, and the Bengals held on to win.

Idaho State Continues to Dominate Conferece Games, 75-52
                      Idaho St. 34 41 75
                      Montana 23 29 52
The Bengals did it again. The Bengals came out strong in the beginning, and took an early 20-4 lead. But then, Kilpatrick lost his stroke, and the Bengals offense stalled. Eight scoreless minutes let Montana back in the game. Morgan then took over for the first time this season. He pressured opposing ball-handlers, and forced many turnovers. By halftime, Idaho State pushed the lead open again 34-23. In the seconde half, Morgan continues to be a force on the defensive end. Montana never made a run back.

                      Key Stats

                      Montana St. 31 34 65
Idaho State never went on a huge run like they did in previous games, but it was a win anyway. It was a close game, and Idaho State steadily built a nine point lead by halftime. The game stayed around the nine point mark until five minutes left in the game. Montana State played solid defense, and forced a few turnovers to tie the game with 2:30 left. On the next position, Gilchrest hit a fadeaway midrange jumper to put the Bengals up by two. Montana St. SG Brown attempted to answer, and drove hard to the rim. The shot was swatted by Busma. Morgan grabbed the board, and walked the ball up court. He passed the ball to Gilchrest, who saw his opponent's were in a two- three zone. He led the defense inside, and then kicked the ball out to Kilpatrick. Kilpatrick let the shot go, and his three put the game away with 1:30 left.

Nice job getting a 5 game win streak, that's always a nice accomplishment.

It helps that the tallest players on most of the conference teams is 6'8 or 6'9 and that I also have the best three point shooter in the conference (Kilpatrick).

The Bengals Win in Fast-Paced Overtime Game, 106-99
                            Bengals 35 58 13 106
                            Hornets 42 51 6 99
Sacramento State's Toles-Bay against Idaho State's Kilpatrick was the matchup to watch coming into this game. Toles-bay is the Big Sky's leading scorer, and Kilpatrick isn't far behind him. Sacramento Stated controlled the tempo of the game early. Toles-bay and his backcourt partner Dickson were lighting up the scoreboard, and were deadly from beyond the arc. Eight minutes into the game, Morgan picked up his second foul. Both teams were scoring at will, but the Bengals were having trouble taking care of the ball, and trailed 35-42 at halftime. At halftime, Kilpatrick had 14 to match Toles-bay's 14. Dickson also had 14 for Sacramento State. In the second half, the Bengals made sure to push the tempo to match Sacramento State's speed. It worked and the scored was tied 48-48 with 15 minutes left in the game. But, Toles-Bay and Dickson continued to dominate the game, and Sacramento State pulled away again. Once Morgan entered the game again with 12 minutes left, the Idaho State started slowly crawling back. With a minute left in the game, the teams were seperated by two points. Sacramento State had the ball. Toles-bay made a curl and got the ball in the corner. He made the three. Down by five with 44 second left in the game, Morgan attempted to drive in for a basket. His shot went off the front of the rim, and Idaho State had to foul. Dickson only made one free throw. The Bengals pushed the ball up the court, and Gilchrest found an opening in the defense, and made a layup. Another foul, and again, Dickson made one of two. On the next possesion, Gilchrest again found a hole, and this time he got fouled. Both free throws were made. On the inbound pass, Busma managed to knock into the air. He got it, and slammed it down. One point game with six seconds left. Idaho State fouled Dickson again, but this time he went two for two. Morgan received the inbound pass, pushed the ball upcourt, and then passed it to Kilpatrick. Kilpatrick let the deep contested three go with less than a second left...... swish! Game tied 93-93. On the first possesion of overtime, Kilpatrick nailed a mid-range jumper. Toles-bay responded by draining a contested three. After that, three scoreless mintues. Busma ended that period with a strong dunk after an offensive rebound. Eller, Sacramento State's Center, made an up and under on the other end to put his team up by one again. Next possesion, Tatum was posting up. He saw that Morgan was open for three. Morgan received the pass from Tatum, and drained his fifth three of the season to put Idaho State up by two. Sacramento State attempted to post up Eller again. Busma managed to poke the ball loose. Morgan ran up the court for an and-one to put the game away with 8 seconds left.
