Three losses in one game. Unheard of, right? Well that's how tough a season it has been for New Hampshire thus far. As for the game, an abysmal 14-37 shooting along with 17 turnovers doomed the Wildcats from the start as they trailed by ten at halftime. But more bad news was brought to Coach Rizzo and the team in the locker room.

Just two week ago, the Wildcats lost their best shooter in Ryan Herrion
with a lower back strain. He's expected back within the the next week. At halftime of the Long Island game, two more players were diagnosed with much more serious injuries. Freshman shooting guard DeAndray Buckley, now the 6th man of the team with Herrion out, broke his hand after landing awkwardly on it when he fell to the floor on a layup attempt that rolled in and out.

With Buckley now out, senior shooting guard Alvin Abreu was called on to replace him. He hit his first shot on the floor, a three from the corner, but he also had the unenviable task of guarding Jaytornah Wisseh of LIU. Wisseh went off for 13 straight points against Abreu, who then decided that punching a nearby wall would help get out his frustration. Like Buckley, he also has a broken hand. Both players will miss the next month of action.

With the guard depth taking a terrible hit, the coaching staff has the tough decision of whether or not to burn the red-shirt given to freshman point guard Jordan Bronner. If not, the Wildcats will run with just nine healthy bodies until Herrion comes back. While walking off the court at the end of the game, Coach Rizzo was spotted asking one of his assistants "is there a light at the end of the tunnel?"

The lack of depth really hurt the Wildcats against Iona today as UNH allowed to Gaels to combine for 40 points. With fatigue a huge factor, Iona got a ton of open looks, allowing them to shoot over 50% for the game, including 10-13 from three-point range. It was a valiant effort, but the Wildcats need good health before they can seriously compete for more wins this season. Ferg Myrick's broken finger really hindered his performance as he missed all five of his shots and turned the ball over three times. He'll be leaned on heavily with Buckley and Abreu out for the next few games.

Injury Update, Brought to you by WebMD

        December 23, 2010

        Durham, NH
        - In what could be called an early Christmas gift for the Wildcats, backup point guard and sixth man Ryan Herrion has finally been cleared to return to basketball activities. With the entire week off of games and UNH not taking the field until December 30th, Herrion will have plenty of time to get back in to the flow of playing again.
"We don't have time to ease Ryan back in. We need his shooting, so he will be ready to play against Colgate. I would imagine he'd be the first one off the bench and could see some playing time at the two as well." -AJ Rizzo
As for red-shirt point guard Jordan Bronner:
"We tinkered with the idea of activating Jordan and burning the red-shirt, but at the end of the day, we figured that one game undermanned would be the best decision rather than jeopardize his future. This is a year for him to sit back and learn and develop and we weren't looking to make a selfish move just for one game. With Ryan [Herrion] back now, there is no pressure to force Jordan into playing time." -AJ Rizzo
With Ferg Myrick's broken finger fully healed, UNH will be as close to fully healthy as they can possibly be for the next couple weeks. With the America East schedule right around the corner, it is time to start gelling together and securing some wins.

Thanks for being a fan. Definitely gives us "chisers" some incentive to continue to do what we do. I actually read through my Kentucky NCAA 11 dynasty last night and having second thoughts on re-buying the game. But for now, I'm going to stick with this. I'm about to fire it up now and see how much I can get done in the next hour or so.

In the final game before the conference schedule begins, the Wildcats get that ever elusive second win of the season over Colgate, 46-41. The scoring output was well distributed across the board and it seems like this team has bonded through all the injuries. With only ten active players, Coach Rizzo plays all ten of them and they all have a role on the floor. This chemistry can only be a good thing with the America East teams filling up the remaining games.

Don't call it a streak just yet, but the New Hampshire Wildcats have just won back-to-back games for the first time of the season. This win is the biggest of them all as it gets UNH started off on the right foot for conference play. The keys to the win were defense (held Albany to 11-37 shooting) and teamwork as they got everyone involved tonight. The Wildcats are a much better team when they aren't focused on getting just one player the ball. If the other team has to respect every player on the floor, it makes everyone's job that much easier.

New Hampshire was led in scoring by their two freshmen starters in Scott Morris and Ferg Myrick. Both players gave nine points on 3-5 shooting with four rebounds each while combining for only three turnovers. To be able to put the ball in a couple pairs of freshmen hands that often and to have such great results is something to be excited about this season as well as the future.

Even though UMBC had a horrible loss to Stony Brook just three days ago, their upset of then #4 Ohio State the week before sat in the minds of Coach Rizzo's Wildcats. They knew this was a good team and should not be taken lightly. With a slim five point lead going into the half, a defensive struggle of a second half took place. Some were heard saying that the last 15 minutes looked like a rock fight with the two teams scoring a total of 26 points. Luckily, New Hampshire held off a last second shot by UMBC's star freshman Chase Plummer who led the team with 10 points. UNH had a freshman of their own that showed what he was made of in Ferg Myrick who finished with 14 points and seven rebounds on the night. he is now averaging a respectable 6.4 points in what seems to be a very low-scoring season for the Wildcats.

Man, those are some PAINFUL box scores to read. I prefer an up-tempo, fast-breaking, full-court press style, so seeing those scores in the 40's hurts my eyes.

In my St. John's dynasty, I was all about the run-and-gun style of offense. Now with my best rated player being my center with shooters around, I have a slow it down offense and run the 4-out playbook to utilize him on the inside with the shooters around him. I have intentionally made it a slower paced team just to switch it up from my dynasty. It definitely does hurt to see the scores so low, but the skill level definitely keeps us from scoring more points.

Nice job so far, 4-8 is a bit of a shaky record but the 2-0 record in conference play makes up for it. Hopefully you can finish the season around .500

Very entertaining read and I'm definitely enjoying following your season. I feel your pain with recruiting and game results. I started a legacy with Long Island a little while back and had 5 scholarships to offer in my 1st season, and had it not been for a few 1* guys from NY signing with me, my first recruiting class would have had 0 signees. I simmed and played games as well and finished the year with 8 wins. I suffered through a 50 point blowout at the hands of Kansas, a 35 point loss to Syracuse, as well as a 30 point drubbing to UMass. The lone bright spot on the season was my upset victory over then #5 ranked Illinois thanks to a last second desperation heave from 35 feet away. Oddly enough, it was only my 2nd 3-pointer of the game as I went 2-16 from outside on the day. Luckily for me Illinois had one of those rare games in which they couldn't buy a basket and shot only 30% for the game. I should mention, however, they went on to finish the year with only 15 wins so they were overrated at the time of my victory. LOL
