Blackjack Shootout A - First Round
Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas, NV

    Barnes dunks over Neal Kingman

LAS VEGAS, Nv. -- Tyler Zeller scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds to help the 2nd-ranked Tar Heels beat Northern Colorado 84-67 in the first round of the Blackjack Shootout A on Friday night.

Freshman Harrison Barnes added 11 points and five rebounds for the Tar Heels (3-1). Kendall Marshall had 10 points and six assists while Dexter Strickland and Larry Drew II scored 15 points each.

Devon Beitzel scored 31 points to lead Northern Colorado, which opened the season with three straight losses. Chris Kaba had 18 points while Elliott Lloyd added 7 points and ten assists.

North Carolina shot 45 percent in the first half to build a 39-36 lead, then opened the second half with an 15-2 spurt that ended with Strickland's three pointer for a 54-38 lead with 14:45 left.

But from there, the Tar Heels seemed content to cruise the rest of the way while the Bears kept fighting. They inched their way back, cutting the deficit to 8 points with 10 minutes left but North Carolina used a 17-3 run to put the game out of reach.

"I don't want to use any terminology like scared or anything like that, because we're not," Northern Colorado coach B.J. Hill said. "Our guys are good players. They respond to the challenges, and we came in here wanting to win this game."

The Bears will play against Jimmer Fredette and BYU Cougars in the losers bracket on Saturday night.

Heck, since you offered (lol), we can throw Virginia Tech into the mix. Surprised they got into the Top 25 so quickly, usually they're aren't in the midst of team sniffing around the polls.

Jimmer's 26 points leads BYU past UNC

LAS VEGAS, Nv. -- Jimmer Fredette wants to have the ball late in games for BYU and it paid off.

Fredette scored 26 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 15 seconds left, to help the Cougars beat Northern Colorado 61-59 on Saturday for the third place in Blackjack Shootout.

"I like having the ball in my hands at the end of the game," said Fredette. "The screen went right and I crossed over and had a little room and took the shot."

Fredette scored thirteen of BYU's last fifteen points and iced the game with two free throws after grabbing Elliott Lloyd's failed jumper with five seconds left for a 61-56 lead. Devon Beitzel hit a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin.

Slowing down The Jimmer? It's possible. Stopping him altogether? Well, as the sign in the stands put it, "Fredette about it."

Noah Hartsock added 10 points and six rebounds for BYU (4-3), Chris Collinsworth also had 10 points on 5-of-11 shooting and added six rebounds.

Chris Kaba led the Bears (0-4) with 17 points, Devon Beitzel scored 16 and Neal Kingman added 10. Elliott Lloyd finished with 7 points and two assists.

"I was proud of the team, they played well and competed hard," Bears coach B.J. Hill said. "They know they played a good team and we played pretty well. If the shot doesn't go in it's a different feeling."

The Bears will look to get their first win of the season on Monday against Santa Clara.

Muscala (L) and Shazier (R) scored in double figures for Bucknell

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Mike Muscala always tells his teammates that he's going to come out shooting.

On Saturday night, that's precisely what he did.

Muscala recorded his second straight double-double by scoring 17 points (7 of 7 from the field) and grabbing 12 rebounds to lead Bucknell to a 73-44 victory over UCLA in the O'Reilly CBE Classic final.

"Our intensity in practice prepares us for all of the big games," Muscala said. "The way we practice makes all of the games easier."

Darryl Shazier added 13 points and Bryson Johnson had 8 for the Bison (8-0), who won its first eight games of the season for the first time in 30 years.

Senior guard G.W. Boon, a smooth 6-4 lefty with a deft touch from the perimeter added 7 off the bench.

"My role is to come out and play hard, keep the team hyped up and motivated," he said. "That's my role, plus staying humble."

Twelve Bucknell players saw game action, eleven of them scored.

Ahead 34-20 at halftime, the Bison ran off the first 10 points of the second half while holding the Bruins scoreless for more than 5 minutes. Bucknell hit 11 of its last 15 shots from the field in the second half and finished 30 of 49 (61.2 percent) for the game.

Malcolm Lee scored 11 points and Tyler Honeycutt added 10 for the Bruins (4-1). Reeves Nelson and Joshua Smith both finished with 8 points.

"It's really, really fortunate we didn't get beat by 50," UCLA coach Ben Howland said. "You get outrebounded 38-18, it could have been really ugly."

The Bruins shot just 29.8 percent (17 of 57) from the field and were outscored by the Bison bench 25-4.
