      Southern Utah downs Oakland, 78-74

      Athletics Center O'Rena, Oakland, MI

Thunderbirds guard Ray Jones Jr. goes up for a shot against Oakland Golden Grizzlies guard Reggie Hamilton

ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Junior Ray Jones Jr. had his third twenty point game of the season with 20 points, his second straight, while sophomore Jackson Stevenett added 14 points and four assists, to lead Southern Utah (7-3, 2-0) to a 78-74 victory over Oakland University (6-1, 1-1) in Summit League men's basketball action on Saturday at the Athletics Center O'Rena.

"It's a good win for us," said SUU coach Roger Reid. "I was worried about them (Oakland) because they have size and can create problems. I was really pleased with us defensively tonight and if it wasn't for that kid (Keith Benson) making all of those shots, the game wouldn't be even close."

The Thunderbirds have now won four straight games and 4 consecutive games on the road. Southern Utah shot 53.7 percent (29-54) in its second conference game of the season.

Senior Ryan Brimley added 9 points and two assists for the Thunderbirds. Junior Matt Massey and sophomore Matt Hodgson scored 8 points apiece.

Keith Benson led the way for the Golden Grizzlies with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Travis Bader and Larry Wright each scored 11 points. OU had 22 assists while SUU only had 10, the Golden Grizzlies outrebounded the T-Birds, 26-20.

The first half witnessed ten lead changes and six ties, the teams went into the break with a 38-38 tie.

The Golden Grizzlies came out on a 16-6 run to push their lead to 10 points, 54-44, with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game. But Southern Utah would use a 14-2 run to regain the lead, 70-68, with just 2 minutes remaining and would never trail again as they cruised to their 2nd straight win over a league opponent this season.

The Thunderbirds will host Weber St. (2-6) on Saturday Dec. 15 for a 6 p.m. tip inside the Centrum Arena. The game can be followed via live web stream on espn3.com.

Looking forward to seeing this start back up. Love all the work you put into it. Can't belive that N. Colorado is playing so poorly.. Hopefully they can get things turned around in Big Sky play.

I knew Bucknell would do well and they have, however I am surprised that they are undefeated.

Looks like my Broncos are not playing so great. At 4-3 things need to turn around come WAC play.
