    Under Pressure

Sometimes the heat of the national spotlight is hot. Sometimes it shines too bright, and the danger is that players lose sight of the game and start seeing the court side cameras instead.

The undefeated Vanderbilt Commodores were very tight to start the game. The Drexel Dragons were even tighter. And although the Dragons only found themselves down by two despite only scoring 5 points in the first five minutes, they found themselves in a much deeper hole because Femi Ramsey picked up two fouls during the first minute of the game.

Vanderbilt kept the pace of the game slow, but they kept their attack balanced. They would work the ball inside, although Duncan Sow is still a very powerful defender down low. Sow managed to stay toe to toe with Emmet Frank, a pre-season All-American at PF, and Josh Henderson in the paint. They would work the ball outside and keep it moving to find the best shot. It was an efficient attack, but not one that was able to put much distance on the Dragons. Although Drexel had trouble hitting jump shots, they got a huge boost from Tracey Cottrill off the bench. Although he is not as strong a defender as Ramsey, he is tall, long, disruptive, and good at attacking the basket.

It wasn't until the end of the half that the jumpers started falling for the Dragons, and when they finally did Drexel began to climb back up the scoreboard and finish the half with a 7 point lead. But with Ramsey getting another foul within the 1st minute of the 2nd half, Drexel's lead would be short lived.

All it took was a vicious dunk by Frank over the outstretched arms of Duncan Sow to get the Vandy crowd back into the game. With momentum suddenly on their side, the Commodores rattled off 14 unanswered points. Despite time outs and adjustments, Coach West could not stop Vanderbilt's assault on the basket and transition offense. To make matters worse, the Dragons were beginning to get sloppy with the ball and helping Vandy's cause by giving them easy chances.

Enter Dallas Marsh, the sometimes forgotten Sophomore who was largely invisible during the first half. After subbing in for Perry McCarthy, who had what can be kindly called an erratic start to the second half, Marsh looked down the Vanderbilt Commodores and saw an 8 point deficit and a crowd that was totally backing the home team.

The game was on the verge of getting out of control. But after seeing the defense playing off of him at the top of the key, Marsh drained a three that changed the tenor of the game entirely.

While Vanderbilt kept going strong, slowly but surely the Drexel Dragons were able to chip away at the lead. That isn't to say the game was slow -- instead, it finally picked up the pace. Marsh pushed the tempo for the Dragons, and in turn Nick Low pushed the tempo for the Commodores. The television audience that had been lulled to sleep by fundamentally sound defensive basketball was rewarded when the second half turned to an offensive showcase.

And the man of the hour was Dallas Marsh, whose 13 second half points brought Drexel all the way back to the lead. But he wasn't the one who would finish it, that man would be Femi Ramsey.

The Dragons had suffered a bit in the middle because players were driving to the basket to attack Ramsey as he was defending in the 1-3-1 at the basket. But Coach West countered this by switching to a 3-2 allowing Sow and Ramsey to support each other down low. The result was conceding the middle of the court, but any time any player drove down the lane they were met by two of the trees. Sow and Ramsey performed flawlessly, picking up no fouls, despite Ramsey being at 4 for the last 5 minutes of the half, and drying out Vanderbilt's scoring push. They had no answers for the 3-2 inside, and the outside shots stopped falling with Josh Payton and Duncan Richard harassing the wings.

The result was a double digit lead late in the 2nd half, and although Vanderbilt attempted to make a valiant push, the game has to end at some time. As a result, Drexel leaves Nashville with an undefeated 12-0 record by the hard fought final margin of 88-76. And anyone in the national audience who believed Drexel is a one trick pony with Femi Ramsey leading the show needs to take another look. The Dragons showed they can dig deep and beat the #3 team in the country with big time contributions from players on the bench. Ramsey made have carried the game home, but without contributions from players like Cottrill and Marsh, the Dragons would have never had a shot.

Coach's Take: It's a credit to our team that we did not get overwhelmed by the crowd. Vanderbilt really got everybody behind them in the second half, but I'm proud of Marsh. He showed how much he has grown since the NCAA Tournament last year. Sometimes you need a spark plug off the bench to get things going. Today we had two of them.

What's Next: Both Drexel and Vanderbilt begin their conference schedules next week.

        Colonial Contenders

The CAA conference schedule begins with D a few teams vying for who will finish #3 behind Delaware and Drexel. The Blue Hens and Dragons have been in a class by themselves compared to the rest of the conference, and all bets are on it coming down to those two teams to see who gets the CAA's auto-bid. Yet with Drexel weighing in at being ranked #3 nationally, they have to be the favorites thus far.

Overall the CAA has had a fairly successful time out of conference, with all but three schools managing a better than .500 record outside of the CAA. The question now becomes who can separate themselves from a very crowded middle. Staff writers from each paper that covers the CAA have pooled together to form the following rankings (with the rule that they are not allowed to rank the team they cover). Number in parenthesis is how each team is rated overall in CH2k8.

        Drexel (83)
        Delaware (79)

As I have done in seasons past, I will focus only on a few key conference games instead of giving write ups for all of them. However, I did play every conference game. Note that after starting 12-0 I also adjusted my sliders to further increase the difficulty.

            These Underdogs Aren't Ankle Biters

Don't say the Dragons weren't warned. Not when it took less than a minute to knock their 9 point lead down to 1 with less than a minute left.

"I have been harping on them all year to take every game seriously," said a still visibly irritated Coach West after the game. "They better take something from this."

The third ranked team in the country came in as extreme favorites against James Madison. The Dukes had not beaten a single quality opponent in non-conference play and even dropped games to lowly Winston Salem State and Fairleigh Dickinson as they struggle to rebuild after losing 4 starting seniors from last year.

But tonight it would be the Dukes who came out with a sense of urgency and the Dragons who played lackadaisically. They chucked up unwise shots. They got out hustled on defense and on the boards. And to add a dose of upset-special to injury, James Madison did what no other team had been able to do this entire season. They figured out how to beat Drexel's zone.

By the middle of the first half, the Daskalakis Center was as silent as in the pre-West days. The Dragons were down by 15 points and the game did not even look that close. Drexel had only managed 2 points. With the crowd so quiet, it was easy to hear what was going on in the Drexel huddle after Coach West angrily called time out. His words were a little more straightforward than normal:

"You need to stick with your man. You need to take care of the ball. If you can't do that, get off the court. I'll find someone else who will."

With that, the Dragons switched to Man-to-Man and began to use their superior size and athleticism instead of staying in their zones. The Dukes had nowhere to go with the ball and seemed unable to adjust. The defensive effort jump started the transition offense, and soon James Madison's game plan began to unravel. Drexel wrested control of the game back to the home team with a 20-5 run to close the half that included a beautiful long jumper by Josh Payton as time expired.

But if the Dragons thought the game was over at halftime, they were sorely mistaken. The Dukes may had started with more energy, but they managed to stop Drexel's transition attack in the 2nd half and kept the game tight. It was a back-and-forth half until Dragons thought they had created some breathing room after 3 straight baskets by Femi Ramsey to build back a 9 point lead.

And then, uncharacteristically, the Dragons began to get loose instead of stepping on the throat of their opponent and snuffing them out. Add in a dash of sloppy passing by Perry McCarthy to create some empty possessions, and the Dragons saw their 9 point lead crumble to 1 and no momentum on their side.

West called time out again to have his team face another test of their character. This is not the first time Drexel had been caught in a tight game, but after crushing opponents heavily earlier in the year this was a huge change. Things got heated in the huddle when West yanked senior PG McCarthy for sophomore Dallas Marsh, but West managed to nip the brewing fight in the bud before it could spoil a critical time out.

Marsh, who is probably best remembered for last year's Shining-Moment-that-wasn't in the Elite 8 against Texas A&M as time expired, took the inbounds pass and dribbled to the top of the key. He passed to Payton, who had run to the right elbow of the three point line for a play that was supposed to work the ball to the left after a series of screens.

Marsh faked left as Ramsey set up for a screen at the top of the key, but James Madison PG Adrian McKee was not fooled. The Dukes had stayed with Drexel by playing tight all game. In these final minutes, the young squad was growing up in front of everyone's eyes.

Except that McKee was a little too focused, because when Marsh cut down the paint to the basket McKee ran straight into a 260 pound All-American wall and fell straight to the ground.

Marsh was by himself under the basket with no one within 15 feet of him. It was Drexel's easiest basket of the game and built their lead back up to 3 points. But just as quickly, the Dukes were able to beat the Dragon full court press and grab a quick bucket to take the lead back down to 1 with less than 4 seconds to go.

Dallas Marsh took the inbounds pass and was immediately fouled. The first free throw bounced off the back rim before going in. The second free throw hit nothing but net to build the lead back to 62-59 with 1.2 seconds to go.

The DAC Pack stayed deafening throughout the time out. Who cares if the opponent has three wins on the season -- it's moments like these that make college basketball so great. There was just one shot to go to see whether the Dukes could take the game to overtime. And while the inbounds pass went to the right place, Duncan Richard stood tall and contested the last second three by Lamar Delficio. The shot bounced harmlessly off the rim as time expired, and Drexel escaped with a 62-59 victory.

Coach's Take: It should not have been that close, but sometimes teams have to gut it out. The Dukes came to play, and our team took too long to find the kind of effort needed to take the win. We're not underdogs anymore. Everyone knows who we are. We're the hunted now. Our guys are going to have to adjust to that mentality. Everyone needs to buy in. We can't only make 1 three for the game and expect to win. We can't stop looking for the good pass and just throw up shots. This team can be great, I just don't want us to get in our own way.

Press Pool: Any comment on your altercation with Perry McCarthy during your last time out?

West: No, not really. That's the kind of situation where everyone wants to be on the court. But he knows why he got pulled, and he's okay.

PP: So you do not see this having a long term impact on McCarthy's place on the team?

West: No. Not unless he makes a habit of turning the ball over in crunch time. I don't see that happening.

              Tigers Can't Keep Up

In the first half the Towson starting 5 made a game of it. In the second half, the Drexel bench crushed the Tigers.

It was obvious that Edwin Okpwae had gotten into Drexel's head. The standout center showed he was not only tough in the middle, but also had a knack for stepping out of the block and challenging shots closer to the perimeter. Sure, Towson had to rely on shooting over Femi Ramsey and the other Drexel bigs, but Towson is one of the few teams in the CAA who has the size to match the Coach West's squad and it sowed tonight. Both Ramsey and Duncan Sow got into foul trouble in the first half, and Perry McCarthy and Duncan Richard lost their shooting touch at the wrong time.

The home crowd could smell blood. This would be the night where Drexel's run at a perfect season was snapped.

              Enter Woody Morandais.

Outside of a few blowouts, the Freshman shooting guard from Scranton, PA was, in some circles, beginning to be labeled a bust or a disappointment. He had largely disappeared from games offensively, and on defense if was a solid, if largely unremarkable defender. Not tonight. No, with the Dragons conceding the first 7 points of the second half, West yanked his entire starting line up and told his reserves to make a game of it. And it was Morandais who took the lead attacking the basket, shooting the three, distributing the ball, and doing everything he could to rip the game from the Tigers.

By the time some of the starters got back onto the floor, Drexel had capped off their latest run by taking a 6 point lead. Before the game concluded, that margin would jump to as high as 20 with Ramsey leading the charge against a demoralized defense.

All game Towson's plan was to pack the middle and force Drexel to jump shoot to victory. Last year's Pennsylvanian Mr. Basketball made them pay en route to a 66-53 victory.

Coach's Take: That's what I wanted to see. A lot of credit goes to Towson, they match up with us very well and pushed us hard. They played great, intense basketball. Fortunately, we got a spark from the bench that kept us the game from slipping away. As I've said numerous times, this is the kind of ball I've seen Woody play in practice for months now. Hopefully he can keep putting things together and string together a few more performances like this for us.

January 30 NCAA Media Top 25 Poll

Well, there must be a curse on the top spot of the poll. The last four weeks, the #1 team in the country had taken their new height and lost, leaving quagmire at the top. This week's victim? Ohio State, who took their #1 ranking and promptly squandered away in Columbus against Indiana. That leaves two teams from outside of the power conference structure vying for the #1 spot. The Coach's poll chose to go with Memphis, who has been very strong of late after doing well against a relatively touch non-conference schedule. But the Media Poll broke in a different direction.

That's right, the Colonial Athletic Association has its first ever #1 ranking with the Drexel Dragons, who had been sitting in the top 5 for weeks since their victory over Vanderbilt, finally clawing their way to the top. With no apparent challengers in the CAA, this looks like a spot the Dragons might not relinquish. But then again, how many times have we said the #1 team should stay atop this season? This month?

Something tells me Coach West and the city of Philadelphia won't complain.

In fact, three of the top five spots come from outside the power conference structure as Utah State continues its remarkable stint in the Top 5 by absolutely crushing its conference competitors. Were you hoping for some non-traditional powers to lead the way come March? This might be your year. Meanwhile, NC State breaks into the poll after a convincing victory over UNC, and Notre Dame and Georgia benefit from other lower ranked teams sliding down the ranks.

Thanks! It's something I was not at all expecting to get at Drexel, or ever really.

Bad news though for your promised Final Four rematch: Vandy has lost 11 of its past 12, including starting 1-10 in the SEC.

                            Fall Apart to Start Again

Call this game the mid-afternoon snack of the schedule. The top two teams in the CAA square off later this week, and both top ranked Drexel and Delaware, with a current RPI of 39, are expected to make the NCAA Tournament. Declaring this game a trap for the Dragons would imply that the opponent has the capability to spring the trap.

Except no one seemed to mention just how hard of a time the Tribe gave the Dragons in Williamsburg a month ago. But the cellar dwellers of the CAA came to play, showing once again how a match-up between a RPI 257 team and a #1 RPI host cannot be played on paper.

The problems for the Dragons started all along the perimiter. Most of their in conference opponents try to work the inside out game, but not William and Mary. Everyone in the starting lineup can spot up and space the floor, and Drexel paid the price early. Darron Evenstar, Kyle Ivey, and Kendall Reece all started the game hot, and despite Drexel's pressure defense they kept finding ways to beat the zone, beat the man to man, and create their own shots.

But that wasn't the only damage done along the perimeter. After picking up two fouls in the opening minute, Femi Ramsey was out of commission for the entire first half. And without him, the Dragons lost its offensive punch inside, instead running plays along the outside and settling for jump shots. And they were missing. Badly. Sure, Perry McCarthy can be a streaky shooter, but normally reliably Josh Payton started the game 0-4 from beyond the arc.

And then Payton crumpled to the floor with a hyper extended knee. Anyone could have cut through the silence in the Daskalakis Center with a knife.

The perfect storm was not just brewing -- it was at hand. And everything was crashing down.

By the end of the half, the Tribe were ahead of the Dragons by as much as 11 and were not letting up. The early shooting fire had died, but Drexel still could not get back into the game. It was only a baseline jumper at the buzzer by Woody Morandais that kept Drexel within single digits at halftime.

Coach West had a headache on his hands. His defense wasn't working. No matter what he threw at the Tribe, they were always able to get their shot. Meanwhile, no one on the Dragons were able to hit a basket from any range except for Woody Morandais. The Dragons entered the half 0-9 from beyond the arc. But there is still a half of play, and still time for adjustments. Femi Ramsey would be back on the floor, and surely the Tribe could not keep up the momentum.

The pressure was all on Drexel, the newly minted and somewhat disputed #1 team in the country.

Drexel did what it does best to start the second half -- it fed the ball straight to Femi Ramsey. West decided to go back to basics and throw out the man to man and shifts and different zones and go back to the building block of his defense: the 1-3-1. The Dragons weren't entirely energized, but they were focused and began a workmanlike push back at William and Mary.

But the Tribe hung tough on the road. Despite an improved defense, no one on the floor was having a better shooting night from beyond the arc that the Tribe's sparkplug, Kendall Reece. Add Chris Clemmons getting more aggressive on the low block and out from midrange against the Drexel zone and William and Mary was able to match Drexel score for score.

No matter how hard Drexel pushed, there was always an answer. With the clock beginning to become a factor, Coach West made two lineup changes in hope of changing the course of the game: benching Perry McCarthy in favor of Woody Morandais at PG and subbing in Tracey Cottril in at SF to add to the Ramsey/Sow front line. The result was immediate. Reece could not shoot over Cottrill. Morandais pushed the ball and was able to find shooters on the low block. Ramsey worked his way inside, and Cottrill was able to beat almost any Tribe defender around the corner or off the dribble.

Their lead shrank from 7 in only a manner of minutes, and the crowd erupted when Drexel took their first lead of the entire game. Except the Tribe could not go away. No matter what, Drexel could not build on their lead until the perfect opportunity came in the closing minute of regulation. Woody Morandais managed to jump a pass while William and Mary was settling in the halfcourt. Cottrill picked up the loose ball and thundered down the court with the Dragons up two points. There were two defenders in front of him and the basket, but Perry McCarthy had drifted behind the three point on the baseline corner. His favorite shot. He hits the shot from that spot with his eyes closed all the time in practice and no one was within 10 feet of him.

The only thing louder than the roar of the crowd was the thud made by the basketball. Not on the rim. No, McCarthy missed the shot off the side of the backboard. Down two, William & Mary took a timeout. After also getting overzealous and committing two critical late game turnovers, it would be the last time McCarthy would see the floor that night.

When the Tribe took the floor, they had enough time to run one more play. Kyle Ivey was isolated at the top of the key against Woody Morandais, and despite the freshman stretching out his arms and not fouling, Ivey yelled and punched his fist in the air as he sent the game to overtime.

It had been a long time since Coach West had to face overtime, but obviously he had his team prepared. The very first play of the extra period was an inside cut to Cottrill, who threw down a monstrous dunk and converted the and-one. On the next possession, Femi Ramsey worked the ball from the post and banked a shot off the backboard. And after a few more exchanges, Woody Morandais did something no Dragon could do during the entirey of regulation: he made a three point shot. The Dragons blew the overtime period open by scoring the first eight points. The DAC Pack chanted throughout the entire William and Mary time out.

But just as soon as the Dragons thought they had finally gained control, the Tribe showed they had plenty left in the reserve tank. Clemmons hit a jumper from the elbow and Ivey made a ridiculous driving layup past Duncan Sow. Suddenly the Dragons lead was cut in half, and just as quickly, Drexel was unable to get anything going in their half court sets. The closest they came to scoring was managing to bleed time off the clock every set they ran.

And then Darron Evenstar hit a three with less than a minute left in the extra period to bring the Tribe to within one. The Dragons took possession, but Duncan Richard could not get a good entry pass to Ramsey and did not have time to work the ball back to Morandais for another shot. The shot clock sounded when Richard hit nothing but oxygen with his air ball.

Which left the Tribe down one with 20 seconds left and possession against the 23-0 #1 ranked Drexel Dragons.

The inbound pass went to Ivey, who this time did not call his own number. Instead the Tribe ran Evenstar through a number of screens. Duncan Richard attempted to keep pace, but was only reaching his man when Evenstar got the ball. With Richard still recovering his position, Evenstar took the opportunity to break through a clear lane for the basket. No one was in front of him as he began to rise up for the game clinching layup.

At that moment, Femi Ramsey rose up from the other side of the lane and emphatically swatted the ball out of the air.

It landed in Woody Morandais' hands with under two seconds left. He was immediately fouled. And while the Freshman missed the front end of the one-and-one, there was not enough time to respond. Drexel escaped with a 69-68 win to preserve their perfect record.

The question now is whether the Dragons got exposed to the rest of the NCAA in the process.

Coach's Take: We won. I'll take it. I swear though, I got out X and O'd by [William and Mary's Coach] Stevenson tonight. You have to give William and Mary credit. But out bench outscored our starters tonight. That tells you about all you need to know about tonight's game, for better or worse.

Congrats on the numero uno ranking. But what happened there against William & Mary? Did your boys get a call from the president or something?
