Re: The Accidental Career of Guy West (CH2k8)
This Is What You Get
The last two years, Coach Frank Martin managed to lead the Kansas State Wildcats to seven wins in non conference play both seasons. That was considered not good enough, and was part of the reason he was shown the door.
So much for that head coaching upgrade everyone was talking about.
The Wildcats left their home floor today with their ninth non-conference loss, this one by a staggering 91-51 final score. Even then, it wasn't so much the margin by which Maryland pounded Kansas State, but instead the margin of devastation.
Cori Geiger somehow cannot tell white and purple from solid red
Kudjo Coulibaly gets stuffed on the fast break
The home crowd took on the air and pallor of a funeral, and the life was sucked out of the arena almost from the opening tip. Players up and down the depth chart made basic, fundamental mistakes. The Wildcats attacked the basket so little that they only attempted 4 free throws -- and missed three of them. What did settling for jumpers net the Wildcats? How about an 0-12 shooting performance from beyond the arc. And despite Maryland's +17 advantage in rebounds, to be honest they did not have to work that hard to get them.
And to think there was once talk of Guy West taking over the Terrapins if Gary Williams chose to step down. Instead, Kansas State has a problem. What the program needs to figure out is whether it is a Guy West problem or a player-personnel problem.
This is not how the team envisioned entering Big 12 play at the start of the season.Last edited by waytofailself; 07-06-2012, 06:28 PM.Comment

The awful inbounds pass drives me crazy! It doesn't occur very often, but almost always at a critical point in the game (for me, at least).
Good luck on turning things around. The start of your season has been brutal. I was not expecting this considering how quickly you took Drexel to new heights.Comment

A couple questions for the press conference:
"Kansas State is 3-9 heading into conference play, obviously not what anyone in the program was expecting with your arrival this season. What do you feel is the biggest problem facing the team this season?"
"Word is your were unhappy to hear the Kansas State AD make boisterous predictions on the success of the team, all the while placing you on a two-year contract. Is it safe to assume everyone in the department isn't on the same page?"My Dynasties

2) how is the confidence in the locker room, have u had to pep talk any players or not pep talked any players in order to get another scholarship and get more of ur style of players on the team
3) how is recruiting going because of the losing, with the seniors and the lower classmen recruits. Has this losing deterred them?? I mean every kid wants a chance to win...... Either that or memorabilia to be able to sell for a skin drawing.......

2017 Preview
Although it was expected to be a big year for the Big 12, non-conference play has not been kind to power teams like Texas and Missouri. Instead, unexpected losses and upsets have left the Big 12 with only two teams in the top 25. Still, this is a very deep conference this year, and it would be no surprise if as many as five or six NCAA bids came out of the Big 12. The teams are talented, they just have not backed down from scheduling tough opponents. Their bruises should serve them well in the long run.

Oklahoma State and Kansas continue to lead the way for the Big 12, while Iowa State and Nebraska have made surprisingly solid runs through non-conference play this year. Only Kansas State has the embarrassment of having a losing record entering conference play, but at least they managed to beat a few lesser teams.
All eyes will be on a few teams to see whether they can right the ship after stumbling out of the gate, but all eyes will be on one team who managed to dodge a few bullets. Probably the most interesting story of the season is Baylor. The Bears have been in the middle of the Big 12 pack for the past few years, but the stars might have finally aligned for them to challenge for the conference title. Can they keep their run going through conference play?

Guy West's Hot Seat Update
The Big 12 Coaches' Press Conferences are up next, and a number of the press pool are eager to attend the one for the cellar dweller. Not many people have had interest in Kansas State the past few years, but many thought West would be the one to turn them around. Well, nothing is more American than grabbing the popcorn as we watch our stars and success stories fall from grace. Surely there will be a good, quotable line or two from the presser. Re: The Accidental Career of Guy West (CH2k8)
Kansas State Big 12 Coach's Press Conference
Guy West (Head Coach, KSU): Good afternoon, and I thank you all for being here today. I wish it was under better circumstance, but I said it could be like this from the start. It isn't pretty at Kansas State, and we have a lot to work towards. But we will get there. I can say with total honesty that our team has not met my expectations despite the fact that we have faced 5 undefeated teams and a team with one loss. I am sure we have not met our fans' expectations. That starts with me, and so far I have failed. That continues with our players, and so far they have failed. This may be the worst team I have ever coached, and this may be the worst job I have done as a coach since starting at Norfolk State. But we cannot sit and cry about it. We need to use the fresh slate Conference Season gives us to build up something better for next year.
*Floor Opens for Questions*
Houndy (HoopsJunk.net): Let's cut the crap here. What the hell is going on at K-State?
West: I am sorry, you are going to need to be more specific.
Houndy: Well how about it still being in the middle of this season and you are already waving the white flag talking about next year. What happened to the "rah rah NCAA or bust" talk at the beginning of the season now turning into some "worst team ever" talk.
West: There's no white flag, but we have to be realistic here. Our effort has not been good enough. I have not seen the sense of pride I was expecting from our squad. So we have to be realistic: we may not make it to any postseason tournaments with our record but hopefully we can make some noise and play the role of spoiler for someone else. But we have to start playing for pride first. We have to start playing together. So far this year we have not.
PJMoore (Kansas City Star-Sentinel): So is your goal just to play spoiler or to play together? What other goals do you have for the season, and what record do you see the Wildcats finishing at the end of the season and in any tournaments?
West: Well, we have a high roster turnover, but I need to see more of what we have for the pieces who will be here next year. I want to give our seniors a close of the season they can look back on instead of shying away from. Those are some goals. As for a record, I'm not Nostradamus but it will take a lot for us to reach double-digit wins. I would love to make it out of the first round of the Big 12 tournament. That seems like someone we can aim for.
Knickerbocker (USA Tomorrow): Being 3-9 heading into conference play is obviously not what anyone in the program was expecting with your arrival this season. What do you feel is the biggest problem facing the team this season?
West: It's true that I was not even expecting to be 3-9, but I did not think we were going to be 9-3 either. The problem should be pretty obvious from the action on the court: we lack talent and we lack toughness. Other teams give us their best shot and we wilt. Other teams jump on us early and we don't have the shooting touch to keep up or the discipline on defense to get stops. So the basic issue is that the Kansas State Wildcats have just not been good enough to compete. We have got to dig deep and work harder to get there.
Yvette Herrera (Dallas Morning Dispatch): How do you response to charges that your constant criticism of players is doing more harm than good -- and how criticizing them further here today would be hurting the team further.
West: It's simple. My players are anywhere between 18 and 23 years old. If they can't handle someone telling them they're doing a bad job, or not doing something right, then they just need to grow up. And the things I'm saying today are the same things my team has been hearing for weeks. But after putting up a clunker like that against Maryland, sure, what's open and obvious does not need to stay behind closed doors.
PJMoore: Is it true that you have been actively trying to sell your players on the local Craigslist since they refuse to win any games for you?
*laughter*
West: I have been emailed that ad probably 7 or 8 times now. It's funny, but no I did not write it and sent a request in to have it taken down.
PJMoore: In all seriousness, how is confidence in the locker room. Have you had to pep talk any players in particular? Or are reports correct that you are trying to drive some players away in order to pick up another scholarship or two to get players that are more your style for the team?
West: No I am not trying to drive players away. I am trying to coach them, and in some cases take care of some bad habits. But some players get down on themselves pretty easily. Roger Guzman I've had to meet with a few times. He knows he has been letting the team down, and I have been trying to work with him on building him back up. Other players need more work. Jaivon Brinkley comes to mind, especially since he was a starter last year and on the end of the rotation this year. He needs to work on his jump shooting and his defense, but there is a reason he's still riding the pine. I'm not trying to drive players away, but I am not going to give them a free pass just because they have been here.
TheStraightGooch (2kHoops.com): So does PG L.F. Reaser stay your starter going forward? His shooting and lack of leadership cannot be helping the direction of the team. Could we see one of several capable upperclassmen take his place?
West: It's true that I want to see more from Reaser. I expected a lot more from him coming into the year, and while he has shown flashes he has a tendency to free-wheel when the pressure is on instead of sticking with the offense. I want to give him a chance to see how he does in Big 12 play, but when we're sitting at 3-9 no one's job is safe and no one's job is set in stone.
Harold DuPont (Omaha City News): Including your job as head coach?
West: Well, that's grim. Yes, especially my job as head coach. I came here to turn the team around. So far we have regressed.
Knickerbocker: Word is your were unhappy to hear the Kansas State AD make boisterous predictions on the success of the team, all the while placing you on a two-year contract. Is it safe to assume everyone in the department isn't on the same page?
West: I would say we are on the same page. We both want to build a winning program. That has not changed.
Knickerbocker: But you were unhappy with the kind of pressure he put on you given the length of your contract and the time to rebuild?
West: I will only respond by saying that I have shown how well I perform under pressure in the past and that private conversations between me and the AD are not going to be discussed today.
Vandyredskins (SportsNet24.com): Is it true that during the shoot-around before the Drexel game that their were a couple sororities there to distract the players?
West: It's true that the Daskalakis Center is a tough place to play and our team needs to improve on its focus.
Vandyredskins: But what about the sororities, or the huge party the night before with video evidence of Kansas State players drinking and partying past curfew.
West: You know I'm not going to feed speculation. And as has been pointed out numerous times, that video was taken after the game, not before.
Vandyredskins: Well does it send the wrong message to party after a --
West: I coach adults, not kids. And there was no underage drinking alleged. Next question.
PJMoore: How is recruiting going because of the losing, with the seniors and the lowerclassmen recruits. Has this losing deterred them? I mean every kid wants a chance to win...either that or memorabilia to be able to sell for a skin drawing.
West: Well, we're not Ohio State if that's what you're asking. It's true that the losing has probably scared off a few recruits, but given Kansas State's performance the past few seasons it is likely we were not on their radar to begin with. I would say recruitment is going well, especially since we have so many scholarships to give out. Believe it or not, there are plenty of high school Seniors and Underclassmen out there who want the challenge of being the one to help restore a program to its former glory instead of sliding into an established power and maybe getting playing time for one season. I would call recruiting a work in progress, but a good one.
TheStraightGooch: With 5 seniors graduating and with the number of cuts you made, you are looking at having up to 11 scholarships available available next the next two seasons. How do you plan to reinvent the team?
West: We have a few pieces who will be returning, but no one that I think we could build around and be competitive in the Big 12. So hopefully I can land a good difference maker. It may be this year. It may be next year. It may be through a transfer from another program. We need to improve our size, our depth, our shooting, our defense. Really, we need an across the board upgrade. The talent is out there, but anyone can recruit talent. The challenge over the next few years is finding the players with the right mentality and coaching them into winners.
TheStraightGooch: In the past, your hallmark has been dominant post players, such as current Rockets PF Femi Ramsey. Do you plan to continue this trend in Manhattan?
West: So far I have been fortunate to work with some very talented, very coachable big men. Femi Ramsey and Kyle O'Quinn are two excellent players, and I wish I could have had more time with Darwin Peterson because I feel he has a lot of untapped potential. But it just depends on the players we bring in and how we perform. I would love to have a dominant post man to control the middle of the floor. But if our team ends up strongest when we attack the perimeter because we happen to bring in some great jump shooters, I can adjust what we do. Kansas State is going to have a lot of turnover in the next few years, and at this stage there is almost no telling what direction we will go.
*That concludes the time for the Kansas State press conference*

Uh Oh...
MANHATTAN, KS: In light of Coach Guy West's criticism at his most recent press conference, the Kansas State Wildcats have called a players only meeting to discuss the current state of the team. Our source indicates that the current state of the coach may also be in discussion, along with possibly making a recommendation to the Kansas State AD to replace Coach West mid-season.Comment

Re: The Accidental Career of Guy West (CH2k8)
Players Only Meeting Reportedly Intense
West, KSU AD React
Word out of Manhattan, KS is that the meeting between the players was one with a lot of conflicting view points. A few players allegedly advocated getting rid of Coach West, but one player with a lot of locker room influence (the source refused to identify the player) apparently turned the discussion away from a coaching change -- calling it a "band-aid fix." Instead, the team spent most of the night discussing what they needed to do to improve as a unit. The theme of the night seemed to turn into "bring more intensity on the floor," although a few players left the meeting clearly unhappy about how their effort was lampooned by their teammates.
When asked about the meeting, Coach West did not hesitate in responding, "Good. I'm glad to see they care enough to put in the extra work and time. They can rail on me all they want, but it's better they do this than lie in bed quietly at night wishing things were better."
Asked whether he was approached by the team to replace West, the AD responded, "No. No one from the team or the department has approached me. And even if they did, there would have to be extreme circumstances to force a mid-season change. Starting 3-9 is disappointing, but Coach West continues to hold his head high and work with the team. He has my full support."
The public declaration from the AD surely has to help Coach West's suddenly tenuous position on the team. But with the Colorado Buffaloes coming to Bramlage Coliseum tomorrow night, talk could turn quickly from building unity back to the Wildcats' struggles.
