Re: What can Brown do for you? (CH2k8)

When asked about the recent controversy with Brown and Coach Rogers, Drexel's Guy West was surprisingly candid, "I've been there. It's never a recipe for success when an athletic director undermines a coach, especially in the media. It's the coach's job to get the team to perform on the court, and and he should be accountable if they do not. I do not see how running to the media to denounce comments that were clearly meant to motivate the team is going to help Coach Rogers get the most out of his players."

After being read the anonymous comment on Rogers' style, West added, "Good. Work them hard. Make them run off. Whether it's true or not, it looks not everyone is with the program. It takes time to change a culture, and Coach Rogers has the right idea."

Re: What can Brown do for you? (CH2k8)

After a myriad of colleagues chimed in, newly christened UNC Head Coach and former embattled Elon coach Mike Petersen was asked his thoughts on the Brown/Coach Rogers situation. Coach Petersen was mum about Rogers' relationship with this AD, until a reporter brought up the anonymous report about Rogers running his players into the ground. He quickly, and aggressively responded with "Really? Good for him, most kids you get these days have been entitled their entire lives, and believe they do no wrong on the court. I made it to three consecutive Final Fours with Florida Atlantic, you know how? My lauded Point Guard five star or whatever Greg Nielsen, learned he had to play by my rules. His first game we lost to Samford, SAMFORD! He ran so many windsprints the next day in practice, he puked. I sat him down, and told him, if he wanted to make it to the NBA, he could try and get there on talent alone, or he could stick with me, work his tail off, and earn every second of fame he wanted, you guys know the rest." Afterwards a not-so-shockingly candid Petersen added on "As for athletic directors, you'll recall I was reprimanded for walking out on the Elon AD multiple times, but I found, you don't have to like each other, you just have to respect each other, ultimately you both want what's best for the program."

After a few questions on how he felt about taking over the once proud UNC program, now 10 years removed from it's last tournament appearance, Petersen added on before he left, "If Rogers were to seek my advice, and I'm not saying he should, he'll tell that Dukie Bilas to shove his opinion where the sun don't shine, and do his best to prove everyone wrong. And just in case he doesn't have that opportunity, Bilas, suck it"

But coach mode just brings out a whole different kind of game for me. I just love the realism of it.
I generally suck at video games, actually, although I may have acquired some skill in this game since I've had it for four years.

Coach mode definitely does add another dimension of realism to the game, but I just can't do it!

I am getting into coach mode now. Would like to see more depth in the coaching beyond play calling, subs, and a couple other minor things but I am having fun with it

BROWN CONTINUES LOSING STREAK, COACH SPEAKS ON PAST FEW DAYS

12/18/12 - Providence, RI: Brown head coach, Colby Rogers, has been under fire over the past few days and will surely be under fire after dropping another game to Colgate.

"We played a decent game today" said Rogers, "We played solid defense for most of the game and especially in the first half. We just weren't running our offense as well as we should have."

Some of the complaints that Colby Rogers had about his team was their lackluster effort during the season.

"I thought that Andrew McCarthy did a really good job fighting today. He hadn't given much of an effort on the boards until today. He was fighting big bodies all game and he still came down with 8 or 9 boards. I'm proud of him for that."

Coach Rogers also addressed the ESPN article and the overwhelming support of coaches over the past couple of days.

"I was incredibly surprised that Jay Bilas took the time to write about an IVY school. He just doesn't seem to appreciate what we do as head coaches at these small schools. I wish I could take Coach Peterson's advice but I won't. And while we are talking about the coaches who have spoken, I'm so thankful for those guys. I know coach West and Knight from when they wanted to know about my AAU players in Rhode Island. They are great guys and we keep in touch whenever we can. I really don't know who the Coach K is from Sacramento State but I'm assuming he was intoxicated when he made his comment." Rogers said with a smile.

Brown has one more non-conference game against Southern Utah before starting conference play. For coach Rogers' sake, lets hope his Bears can pull out a win.

Hello and welcome back to the Dennis and Callahan Morning Show on WEEI 850. We have just finished our first hour and like we mentioned earlier, we are met by Brown Bears head coach, Colby Rogers! Thanks for your time coach.

CR: Thanks guys for having me.

WEEI: Well coach, it has been an uncommonly interesting preseason for you and your team. What is the mentality of the team right now?

CR: Honestly guys, we are in a good frame of mind right now. We got the feeling of winning back in our blood and the past couple of weeks, we have been more focused then we have been all year.

WEEI: How have the players handled the whole situation with the ESPN Insider story that Jay Bilas has posted and the reaction by coaches nationwide?

CR: Well firstly, I told them to let me handle the situation with the press so that's why you haven't heard any of my guys talking about it on the record. But they have done a good job focusing strictly at the task at hand and that is getting better as a team and getting wins. They have taken it as a challenge since I called them out a couple of games ago and I think that they are up to it.

WEEI: Now lets look at the rest of the conference. Harvard won the IVY League last season in a conference that had 3 teams including you guys fighting for the title all the way to the last day; are they the favorites to win the regular season title again this season?

CR: Well it is really hard to not pick them as the favorites. All 5 starters from last season are back and they only lost one player. They have the preseason player of the year, Keith Wright, and he has been dominating so far getting 20/8.

WEEI: Speaking of last season, your team was in a similar situation coming into the conference schedule.

CR: Very true. Last year we went into conference play with only 2 or 3 wins. Also, last season, we had a ridiculously tough non-conference schedule where something like 7 or 8 teams made it to the NCAA tournament. But to your point, our last 2 months have no say whatsoever on what happens for these next 14 games.

WEEI: Last season, Princeton went on a 7 game win streak during the conference schedule until you beat them after previously winning only 1 game all year. Do you see any team this year making a surprise run like that?

CR: Well in order to have a run like that, you will need a solid overall team led by a reliable point guard. Princeton fit that description. They were led by Doug Davis who thankfully graduated last season, and they just started clicking. My answer to your question is honestly us. I think that if we start clicking, we will be a tough team to beat.

WEEI: Well coach we have to ask, and I will ask this in the most respectful way possible; what makes you think that your team is the team that will surprise everyone in the IVY League?

CR: I truly believe that our team is poised to make a run here at some point. Whether or not we will win 8 out of 9 like Princeton did, I don't know. But we have our stud freshman point guard Daymond Ravello coming back from his injury and he has been practicing the past couple weeks with the team so he will be good to go from the start. Also, our offense has become much crisper as of late and I truly believe that we will be putting more points up on the board.

WEEI: Well it's not a total secret that your defense and rebounding have not been up to par. Will we see any improvement in those areas as well?

CR: Well we have definitely struggled in the paint this season on both ends of the court. That is something that is still a work in progress. Our big guys Andrew and Robert are really putting in a lot of work right now and hopefully it will start paying off for them.

Well thanks coach for coming onto the program! That is Colby Rogers everyone, head coach of the Brown Bears men basketball team. They will be heading up to New York to take on Columbia this Saturday, January 3rd. We will be back shortly after this break! When we return, we will talk to the women's Minecraft coach for Yale and see if they have gotten past those creepers in the diamond mine.

That was a rough OOC schedule as the squad only goes 2-8. Now it's time after the good bounceback win over SUU to try to keep the momentum going as you start the Ivy League schedule. Good luck on the road against the Lions.
