      The Loud House

Toward the end of the 1970s, Syracuse University was under pressure to improve its football facilities in order to remain a Division I-A football school. Its small concrete stadium, Archbold Stadium, was 70 years old and not up to the standards of other schools. The stadium could not be expanded; earlier in the decade it had been reduced from 40,000 seats to 26,000 due to fire codes. Therefore Syracuse University decided to build a new stadium on the site of Archbold, which, appropriately for Syracuse's often cold weather was to have a domed Teflon-coated, fiberglass inflatable roof. When it opened in September 1980, it was made clear just how loud it was inside; that night the dome's famous nickname, "the Loud House", was coined. The inflatable roof causes the sound produced to echo many times, exponentially increasing the loudness produced inside. It would also serve as the home for the men's basketball team, as a replacement for Manley Field House. The Carrier Dome has a capacity of 50,000 for football, and the nation's largest for basketball, 34,646 (record set against Villanova in 2010 season.)

          Syracuse History

The Orange has established a strong reputation as the fifth winningest men's Division I basketball team of all-time, and currently holds an active NCAA-record 40 consecutive winning seasons. In its 35th year under current head coach Jim Boeheim, the team has compiled an all-time record 32 20-win seasons, including eight Big East regular season championships, five Big East Tournament championships, 25 NCAA Tournament appearances (and 32 all-time), and three appearances in the national title game. In those games, the Orange lost to Indiana in 1987 and Kentucky in 1996, before defeating Kansas for the title in 2003.

          Past Seasons Records
          2011 | 27-8, 12-6 | NCAA Tourney
          2010 | 30-5, 15-3 | NCAA Tourney
          2009 | 28-9, 11-7 | NCAA Tourney
          2008 | 21-14, 9-9 | NIT

Re: Welcome to the "Loud House" | Syracuse Basketball (CH2k8)

In many ways, the Syracuse Orange (27-8 in 2010-11) has to consider this season a disappointment. After reaching 18-0 with a win over Cincinnati on January 15, the Orange hit a slump that saw it drop to 20-6. Ultimately, Syracuse would go 2-2 in the postseason, losing a tight contest to Big East foe Marquette in the Round of 32.

Jim Boeheim’s program is a perennial Big East and NCAA Championship contender, and one can guarantee that the squad would like to atone for this season’s letdown. Let’s take a look at the Orange’s prospects for the 2011-12 campaign.

              Key Losses

The Orange will lose the leadership of senior Rick Jackson (13.1 ppg, 10.3 rpg) this season. Jackson’s long arms and defensive presence were key components of Syracuse’s 2/3 zone over the past four seasons. His intangibles will be missed as much or more than his statistics. Luckily he is the only senior on last year's team which means the Orange will likely be contenders in the coming season.

              Returning Backcourt

Syracuse’s backcourt will remain intact next season with Scoop Jardine (12.5 ppg, 5.9 apg) and Brandon Triche (11.1 ppg, 2.9 apg) forming a potent combination. Jardine is the type of player who can win or lose a game for his team based on his shooting touch on a given night. He had some brilliant offensive games, but also some stinkers (see the NCAA Tournament loss to Marquette for an example). If he becomes more consistent as a senior, he could become one of the top point guards in the country.

Triche was able to pick up the slack during many of Jardine’s poor-shooting games. He is a solid shooter with good range, but also suffers from inconsistency. If both guards are off, the ‘Cuse has very little shot at success.

Dion Waiters looks like a new man. He has shed some weight and is looking faster, stronger and more confident than ever. Now, hopefully that confidence isn't an issue like it was this past season.

              Returning Frontcourt

The offense will run through forward Kris Joseph (14.3 ppg, 5.2 rpg) in 2011. Joseph chose to return to Syracuse for his senior year rather than test the waters of the NBA Draft. His shooting range presents a problem for opposing defenders, as he raised his percentage to 37% behind the arc.
The rest of the frontcourt is a work-in-progress. Freshman C.J. Fair (6.4 ppg, 3.8 rpg) probably exhibits the most talent and potential, with Mookie Jones, Fab Melo, and Baye Moussa Keita rounding out the rotation. These big men will need to develop for Syracuse to reach its potential.

              On the Recruiting Trail

Five-star McDonald’s All-American Rakeem Christmas (Academy of the New Church, PA) could fill an immediate need for the Orange at center. He is 6’9”, but plays larger than that due to an 88.5” wingspan. Christmas is described as a tenacious rebounder and defender with a developing offensive game. He could fit in the middle of the 2/3 very effectively.

Boeheim also picked up five-star McDonald’s All-American Michael Carter-Williams (St. Andrew’s School, MA). Carter-Williams is described as an incredible shooter who will need to bulk up a bit to survive the physical Big East. He could contribute off the bench immediately next season when Syracuse’s starting guards are struggling with their shots.

Syracuse’s third commitment is from ESPNU 100 shooting guard Trevor Cooney (Sanford High School, DE). Cooney’s shooting ability is unquestioned, but he does not have a great deal of natural athleticism. He will be redshirting this season but come next year he has a bright future in the Orange lineup.

              Outlook

Syracuse should have a strong team next season under the leadership of Joseph and Jardine. I really like the backcourt of Jardine and Triche, particularly with help coming from Dion Waiters. The frontcourt is a question mark, but Boeheim has demonstrated the ability in the past to develop big men. I think Fair and Melo, particularly, will develop into Big East players next season and that Christmas will have an immediate impact.

              Predictions
              Final Record: 28-6
              Post-Season: NCAA Tourney (Elite 8)
              MVP: Kris Joseph
              Sixth Man: C.J. Fair
              Impact Freshman: Rakeem Christmas

Syracuse cruises to a 3-0 record

                  SYR | 30 | 34 | -- | 64

Syracuse, NY -- The Orange came into this game excited for the season to start. They knew Fordham wouldn't be much competition so a lot of different players got a lot of time. Notably, Dion Waiters showed he's for real this season. He came off the bench to play just 19 minutes but put up 24 points and 3 assists on 9/15 shooting. The weight loss is really paying off for him.

Fab Melo grabbed 11 rebounds, and Joseph put up a double double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Overall, the Orange looked good in the season opener.

                  SYR | 42 | 41 | -- | 83

Syracuse, NY -- Manhattan came in to the Carrier Dome expecting to win, and they played like it. They came right out of the gates hitting Syracuse hard and the Orange were not prepared. The Jaspers took a quick 8-0 lead. Jim Boeheim did what he does best, called a timeout and made an adjustment. He brought in CJ Fair and Dion Waiters off the bench and sat senior leader Scoop Jardine who had made a few early turnovers.

After the changes Syracuse played a much more solid game and they turned it around. Manhattan wouldn't quit but their skill level just wasn't on par with Syracuse's patented 2-3 zone which forced the Jaspers into a poor shooting night at 41%.

Syracuse went on to win 83-72 behind a solid game from Dion Waiters off the bench again with 17 points. Feb Melo put up 11 and Joseph racked in 12.

                  SYR | 38 | 43 | -- | 81

Syracuse, NY -- 'Cuse caps off a 3-0 record and a trip to the Mecca of basketball next week after their 81-40 thrashing of Albany. The Great Danes never stood a chance. With CJ Fair off the bench with 15 points and Brandon Triche finally coming alive with 21 points on 5-9 shooting from 3pt range.

The Orange looked solid and got their freshman Carter-Williams and Rakeem Christmas some solid playing time.

New York, NY -- Syracuse and Virginia Tech don't have a major rivalry, most wouldn't even call it one. But the two teams played like they did tonight. Syracuse came out the gate strong, holding no punches. If not for the amazing play of freshman Dorian Finney-Smith of VT, the Orange would have cruised to an easy win. But Finney-Smith's 41 points and seven three pointers kept his team in it.

The Orange put together a great first half. Joseph scored 13 of his 25 in the first, and they seemed to be in total control. But in the second half, the Hokies inched and inched back into the game and before the Orange knew it, there was under a minute and they were only up by five.

After Finney-Smith drained another three, the Orange led 87-85 with 7.3 seconds. 'Cuse inbounded it and evaded the intentional foul, threw it up court and were able to kill the clock to get the victory.

Syracuse was led by Kris Joseph's 25 points, 9 rebounds on 8-14 shooting. Scoop Jardine added 8 points and 11 assists, Triche 15, Fab Melo 10 and 9, and Dion Waiters off the bench with 12 points, 4 assists.

New York, NY -- Most know, that the "Mecca" also known as Madison Square Garden is almost a second home to Syracuse. They love any chance to play there and thrive on the spotlight. Stanford experienced that tonight as the Orange played an almost complete game, one in which Stanford never lead.

'Cuse was sparked by bench production from CJ Fair and Dion Waiters who added a total of 23 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists.

Joseph earned MOP honors averaging 21.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in the tournament.

Stanford never really clicked until late in the second half when they strung together a decent comeback but didn't get anywhere closer than 8 points. Jardine capped off great play with an alley oop to James Southerland late in the second half, somewhat adding insult to injury, but you gotta play 40 minutes to get wins these days, can't take it easy on anyone.

Syracuse, NY -- The Orange may have won this game, but they lost a big part of their team for the next few weeks. On the first play of the game, Fab Melo landed on his ankle wrong, sending him to the bench for the next few weeks until his high ankle sprain heals up.

Onto the game. The Orange big men played very well, but their unsung hero was C.J. Fair who racked in 14 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks off the bench. Fair is developing into a solid player for the Orange and will fit nicely into Joseph's spot next season.

Christmas had his first double digit rebounding game with 8 points, 10 rebounds. The young big man is developing nicely.

Syracuse looks solid heading into their game against Marshall. The next few should be easy wins heading into Big East play. The Orange hope to head into conference play undefeated.

Nice start, though some of your wins have been a bit too close for comfort. A win is a win, though.
