Thunder defeat Nuggets 87-77 to stake 2-0 series lead

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma City Thunder are more than just Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.

With Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins already sidelined, Durant gave the Thunder a scare when he came up limping after a lay-up in the second quarter.

That's when Chris Douglas-Roberts left his mark on game 2 of the series.

The mid-season addition made his first 7 shots off the Oklahoma City bench on his way to 17 points that helped the Thunder to an 87-77 win and 2-0 lead in the series.

"Everybody chipped in tonight," said Durant, the NBA's scoring champion, "That's what we're going to need."

Durant didn't seem to bothered by his sore knee scoring 25 points with 10 rebounds and Russell Westbrook recovered from a tough game one with 21 points and 6 assists.

Wilson Chandler scored 17 points to lead Denver, which could only get as close as 6 in the fourth quarter before Oklahoma City put the game away.

"We gave them too many minutes, too many possessions of they were totally in control," Denver coach George Karl said. "They were energized, they were more physical, they were quicker, probably smarter."

The Nuggets three point shooting kept them in the game, as they hit 16 of 29 attempts, but it also cost them down the stretch as they settled for the long ball instead of attacking the rim. Denver played too passively, resulting in just 4 free throw attempts and only one make.

Oklahoma City got large contributions from their bench. Besides CDR, James Harden had 11 points and 7 rebounds and Nazr Mohammed grabbed a game high 11 rebounds.

"We've done it all year," coach Scott Brooks said. "You don't win the games we've won just having one or two guys. I really believed those guys were going to step up and score some points."

Ty Lawson and Arron Afflalo scored 15 and 14 points respectively for the Nuggets in the loss.

Denver will look to recover and get back in the series when it shifts to their home court for game three on Tuesday night.

Thunder rout Nuggets 88-70 to take 3-0 series lead

DENVER -- The Thunder continue their roll through the Western Conference playoffs, making easy work of the Nuggets with an 18 point win to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the series.

Kevin Durant scored 26 points to lead the Thunder, but hit just 8 of 18 shots, as his sore looked to be bothering him all game.

Durant wasn't the only Oklahoma City who had to deal with aches and pains. James Harden tweeked his wrist after hitting the floor on a lay-up attempt but shook it off to finish the game with 19 points.

Russell Westbrook nearly recorded his second triple double of these playoffs with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists.

Wilson Chandler led Denver in scoring for the second straight game with 15 points off the bench. Danilo Gallinari was the only other Nuggets player in double figures scoring 10 points before fouling out in fourth quarter.

Oklahoma City led the game wire to wire and the Nuggets really only threatened to take lead once in the second quarter when they got as close a two points, but the Thunder pulled away soon after to cruise to an 88-70 win.

Denver will have one more chance to make this a series in game four, but their body language after game three seemed as if they already think the series is all but over.

Nuggets avoid sweep by silencing Thunder

DENVER -- The spark plugs energized the Denver Nuggets.

Ty Lawson scored 17 points as did fellow guard Arron Afflalo to help Denver beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 92-82 on Thursday night as the Nuggets avoided being swept in the conference semi-finals.

"This is the biggest game of my life," Lawson said. "I just wanted to come out and just play strong."

The Nuggets still face a huge challenge in trying to become the first NBA team ever to overcome a 3-0 series deficit, but they finally found a formula for beating their nemesis, and Lawson was front and center.

"He was great in the pick and roll," Kevin Durant said. "He made some tough shots. Ty's a great scorer. He can do a lot in that pick and roll."

"We probably found confidence," Lawson said, "because everybody was counting us out."

Durant led the Thunder with 30 points and 9 rebounds in loss. Russell Westbrook had his worst game of the playoffs scoring 12 points, but most of them game at free throw line as hit hit just one of 12 field goal attempts.

The return of Kendrick Perkins to the Thunder line-up was uneventful as he only managed 3 points and 3 rebounds.

Wilson Chandler led the Nuggets in scoring once again with 18 points in just 20 minutes off the bench.

The series resumes Saturday night with Game 5 in Oklahoma City. The Thunder will be looking to advance to the conference finals for the second straight season.
