Felton sparks Suns to 93-85 win over Thunder

PHOENIX -- Many Suns fans thought their team was giving up on the season once they traded Steve Nash to Portland.

As it turned out the Suns improved with the addition of Raymond Felton and the return of Aaron Brooks from China to make the playoffs as the 7th seed in the Western conference.

Phoenix even sent their fans home on a high note after their 93-85 win in the final regular season game against the west's top team Oklahoma City. Granted the Thunder didn't really have anything to play for and rested Kevin Durant how is still dealing with back spasms.

Felton led the Suns with 20 points and Marcin Gortat added 14 points and 9 rebounds.

"You can't take winning for granted," Felton said. "This makes you really appreciate when you win a game and actually shows you how hard it is to win a game."

James Harden led the Thunder with 20 points, Russell Westbrook had 19 points to go with 8 rebounds and 7 assists, and Durant added 11 in limited action.

"Well, that wasn't the way we wanted to finish up our regular season, with a loss. ... I'm disappointed but I'm excited about the opportunity that's ahead," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "I thought we had a very good season. We made a lot of improvements along the way."

Oklahoma City will face the San Antonio Spurs in the the first round of the playoffs. The Thunder were 1-3 against the Spurs this season, so they will need to improve their play against San Antonio if they hope to make it out of the first round.

Durant's 36 too much for Spurs as Thunder take 1-0 series lead

OKLAHOMA CITY -- If anyone had any questions about Kevin Durant being the league MVP, he had all the answers.

Durant started the game with an and-one, back to the basket flip over his head lay-up. He finished the night with 36 points and 8 rebounds in the Thunders 100-75 game 1 rout of the San Antonio Spurs.

The Spurs led by two after the first quarter but things fell apart during the 2nd and only got worse from there.

Tony Parker left the game in the third quarter with a lower back injury and will likely miss the rest of the series. Gary Neal will be replacing Parker in the line-up, but San Antonio will miss Parker's veteran leadership at point guard.

Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook was able to take advantage of the inexperienced Neal scoring 22 points and dishing out 9 assists. James Harden added 13 to the Thunder effort off the bench as well.

Winning game 1 was crucial for a Thunder team who had be questioning their ability to beat the Spurs after losing 3 of the 4 regular season meetings.

"Everything we needed to do, we did," said Thunder coach Scott Brooks after the game.

Game 2 will take place Sunday in Oklahoma City. The Thunder will be looking to take a strangle hold on the series, while the Spurs will have to overcome the adversity of losing a key player like Parker and try to tie things up before heading back to San Antonio.

Thunder win game 2, lose Durant to back injury

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Kevin Durant got off to a 0 for 7 start and thought that things couldn't any worse. They could.

Durant drained a 20 foot jumper with a defender flying at him for his first make of the game, but Kawhi Leonard set to floor hard. The fall re-aggravated a back injury that caused him miss most the final two weeks of the regular season. It is unknown when or if he will be able to the series.

With Durant sidelined Russell Westbrook took over the scoring responsibilities for Oklahoma City.

The Spurs, who had trailed by as many as 13 points, took their first lead since the second quarter at 94-93 on a Tim Duncan jump hook with 10.4 seconds left in the game.

After a Thunder timeout, Westbrook drove hard to the basket and while he missed the lay-up he did draw a foul. He sank both free throws to give Oklahoma City a 95-94 lead, but left 5.6 seconds on the clock, more than enough time for San Antonio to get a good look.

Thankfully for the Thunder, Maun Ginoblil's three point attempt at the buzzer clanged off the front rim giving OKC a 2-0 lead in the best of 7 series.

Westbrook finished with 33 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists. James Harden came up big off the Thunder bench scoring 22 points and Segre Ibaka had 11 points and 9 rebounds.

San Antonio had their own injury issues to deal with as they lost Tony Parker in game 1 of the series. Gary Neal stepped in to the starting line-up in his place and came up big scoring 26 points to lead the Spurs.

Ginobili had 22 points, Duncan had 12 and Tiago Splitter netted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to get the Spurs a badly needed win.

Despite having a 2-0 lead in the series the Thunder will have a tough time closing out a veteran team like Spurs without Durant. The task will be even tougher as the series will shift to San Antonio for the next two games starting with game 3 on Tuesday.
