Durant, Thunder rally to beat Hawks in overtime

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The emotions ran high as the Chesapeake Energy Arena lights went down. The Oklahoma City Thunder players walk to center court one at a time to receive their NBA Championship rings and say something heartfelt to introduce the next teammate in line.

The NBA champions needed every bit of that family bond just to survive the first test in a season that's sure to be full of them.

Kevin Durant scored 43 points, Russell Westbrook hit the go-ahead lay-up with 18.8 seconds left in overtime and Oklahoma City rallied late for a 116-112 overtime victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Friday night.

James Harden had 22 points off the bench for the Thunder, who hung the banner celebrating their 1st NBA championship since leaving Seattle and handed out their impossibly ostentatious rings in a surprisingly touching pregame ceremony.

The champs then fell behind by 15 points before rallying to tie the game in the fourth-quarter lead behind a 3-point barrage by new addition Tracy McGrady, who scored 13 points in just 14 minutes of playing time, hitting 3 of his 4 three point attempts.

"Getting those rings, you're definitely on a high," said Harden, "You have to come back down, because that's history. That's something nobody can take away from you ever, but it doesn't help us in the next game."

Joe Johnson scored 21 points, and Josh Smith had 20 as the Hawks come up short in their first game of the season.

"They're the world champs, and we knew it was going to be tough," Hawks coach Larry Drew said. "But I thought we responded pretty well. I think [for] about seven minutes, we just didn't play the way we're capable of, and they got back in the game."

Johnson blamed himself for the Rockets' failure in the final seconds after he curled underneath the basket.

"When I caught the ball, I didn't know exactly where I was on the floor," Johnson said. "Then I took a dribble and realized where I was, and I tried to drive, but my leg kind of slipped."

The Hawks didn't make the celebration easy in the Thunder's first real home game since their victory in Game 6 of the NBA finals four months ago.

The Lakers understandably had a little trouble focusing after the pregame festivities.

"I think that the players were emboldened by the ring," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "I think they were excited about it, so that part of it, I thought was good. I just didn't think we played with the right speed and tempo in the first half. We got a lot of shots, not a lot of them good."

Westbrook's layup put the Lakers ahead 114-112 and iced the game with two free throws giving him 24 points to go with his 14 assists in the game.

"It feels great to contribute in the first game, but it's even better to win in the first game," Westbrook said.

The Thunder will have off day before playing on back-to-back days against the Brooklyn Nets and Toronto Raptors.

Thunder overcome Nets for 2nd straight OT win

BROOKLYN -- It only seemed fitting that the last NBA team to relocate would be the visiting team for the most recently relocated franchise.

In their first home game since making the relatively short move from New Jersey to Brooklyn the Nets were unable to hold off the defending champs late charge as the Thunder made it two straight wins to open the season with their 123-109 OT victory.

Kevin Durant led the Thunder with 34 points and Russell Westbrook added 30, but it was James Harden who made the clutch plays late in the 4th quarter and overtime and finished with 22 points off the bench in the win.

After leading the game for 3 quarters the Nets faltered down the stretch and only managed 2 points in overtime while giving up 16 to the Thunder.

O.J. Mayo led the Nets with 22 points and Brook Lopez chipped in with 20 points and 9 rebounds in the loss. Deron Williams finished the game with 19 points and 6 assists as the center piece New York's other basketball team.

Oklahoma City will have a quick turnaround as the return home for their 3rd game of the season tomorrow night against the Toronto Raptors, who are off to a 2-0 start this season.

Thunder start slow, but finish strong to knock off Raptors

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma City Thunder went into overtime in their first two games this season. Early on it looked like the extra court time was catching up with them.

Toronto jumped out to a 31-19 lead after one quarter, but once Oklahoma City found their stride the Raptors never stood a chance.

Dominating the 2nd and 3rd quarters, OKC pulled away from the Raptors for a 100-84 win, bringing their record to 3-0 as defending champs.

"That's the most impressive thing, I think, about our team is our consistency and not having a lot of slippage when we have a bad stretch," said forward Nick Collison.

Russell Westbrook continued his hot start with 24 points and 8 assists and Kevin Durant led the team with 29 points and 4 steals.

"We respect every team we play and every player we go up against but we know we have that mindset of trying to be guys that go out and get after it and have that competitive spirit for 48 minutes straight," Durant said. "That's our brand of basketball here in Oklahoma City, and that's how it's going to be for a long time."

The Raptors were led by Andrea Bragnani who scored 24 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, and had 3 blocks in the game. Jose Calderon added 22 point, 11 rebounds and 8 assists to the losing effort. After a hot start where he scored the teams first 7 points, rookie Terrence Jones cooled off to finish with just 9 points in the game.

"You're not going to get many easy buckets against this team, and they're going to try to make it a transition game and get up and down," Raptors coach Dwayne Casey said. "They did that, and we were not equal to the match tonight."

Oklahoma City gets a 3 day break before resuming their home stand against the Warriors on Friday night.
