Drive to be Great - Jeremy Wolfe Legacy (CH2K8)

    In the Year 2007...

It's official the Texas State Bobcats have decided to sign Jeremy Wolfe as their new basketball head coach after firing Doug Davalos a few months ago. A lot of speculation rose but no one knew that Wolfe would be the selected as the new head coach.

Coming off a 10-20 Overall record and a 4-12 finish in the Southland Conference. The fired Doug Davalos will be replaced by 26 year old Jeremy Wolfe. Wolfe has never coached at any college level, however this is what the Athletic Director Dr. Larry Teis had to say about the hiring.

Teis: "Coach Wolfe is exactly the kind of coach we need here at Texas State. He doesn’t have in college coaching experience but he makes up for it in his accomplishments with the mindset of defense wins championships he has won two high school state championships and an ABL championship when he coached in the league for two years. He has that win big or go home mentality and that’s what we love in him.”

Coach Wolfe: "I’m excited to be here and I’m ready to take on the responsibility. I always give myself a goal before each season starts every year. For the 2007-08 season I want to finish at least .500 with no less than 18 wins. I want my players to enjoy playing with me and each other, and with 5 scholarships I want some impact players to commit to our program."

The Bobcats started off winning 3 straight; this includes winning the Air Force’s Hangar Challenge, finishing the non-conference with an impressive 10-4 record. However Texas State was hit with a stroke of bad luck for they lost their leading assist man JR PG Corey Jefferson and 3rd leading scorer SR SG Brent Holden to devastating injuries (strained abdomen and broken foot) causing them to lose 7 games straight. The Bobcats finished 8th in the Southland Conference going 7-9. Texas State would enter the Southland tourney on a hot streak having won back to back games and push through the quarter and semi finals ending their tourney in the Championship game by defeating Nicholls State 82-75.

The Texas State Bobcats’ Big 3 (JR SG Brandon Bush, FR SF Cameron Johnson, and SR SG Brent Holden) dominated through the Southland tournament with Bush averaging 20 ppg 72% 3PT, Johnson averaging 19 ppg 7.3 rpg, and Holden averaging 19.3 ppg 41% 3PT lead the Bobcats to a Conference Championship.

With a Tournament Championship the Bobcats received a 15th seed in the NCAA tourney facing #2 seed Indiana. Texas State would lose to Indiana 103-68 in the 1st round with Indiana’s Eric Gordon scoring 32 points.

Coach Wolfe: "We’re gonna keep our heads high because this season we worked hard. We lost two important pieces at the worst time, but we fought back to earn that last spot in the Southland Tourney and we won it. We accomplished a lot even though we didn’t come close to beating Indiana. We set ourselves with goals and we achieved them."

With hard work and dedication FR SF Cameron Johnson was named Conference Freshman of the Year and him and FR C Johnathan Sloan both earned a spot on the Southland All-Freshman Team.

Recruitment Battle - Coach Wolfe lands 5

The offseason kept Coach Wolfe very busy trying to land players to replace his 4 graduating seniors. Recruits were signing to rival schools left and right, so Coach Wolfe had to turn up his recruitment or he won’t sign anyone. He did all he could and he was able to land 3 3* rated players; 6’4 SG Edmund Sockwell (Overall #115/#27 SG), 6’7 PF Lennox Nabors (Overall #355/#49 PF), and Junior College FR 6’8 PF Fredrick Jefferson. Also we landed 2 2* rated players; 6’10 PF Clinton Pettyjohn and 6’5 SG Rodrick Waleskowski. 3 recruits are from the state of California and the rest are from Texas, they are lead by Sockwell a very dominate all-around player, who averaged 18.9 points, 8.8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals per game in the ABL.

Coach Wolfe: "This was a very tough recruiting year many recruits were going to rival schools, but I’m happy we’re still able to land Sockwell. He was quite impressive in the ABL hopefully his game will continue to be impressive at the college level otherwise he won’t be starting over (Brandon) Thomas at the shooting guard spot. He will be the only one who battles for the 5th starting spot or be our top reserve off the bench, because the other recruits won’t be better than (Cameron) Johnson; he starts at power forward."

    2007-2008 Season Outlook

Re: Drive to be Great - Jeremy Wolfe Legacy (CH2K8)

During training for the upcoming season 3 of the freshmen on the team caused Coach Wolfe to believe that there are gems out there. FR SG Edmund Sockwell proved that he is the best player on this team and gets the nod to start over SR SG Brandon Thomas plus gaining more minutes than both Texas State’s dynamic duo (SR SG Brandon Bush and SO SF Cameron Johnson). FR PF Lennex Nabors showed that though he’s the shortest PF on the team he can pull rebounds like a 7 footer, so Coach Wolfe decided to give him the 6th man spot since he isn’t a better player than Johnson. Last but not least SO PF Fredrick Jefferson promised Coach Wolfe he is good enough to play this season.

Coach Wolfe: “Honestly I didn’t expect none of these freshmen to surpass anyone’s expectations. No one on the team could contain Edmund (Sockwell) he was unstoppable I feel as though he’s gonna have a great freshman year. Lennex (Nabors) is the one who most surprised me I didn’t expect him to battle as hard as he did. I’m going just tell it like it is I was going to redshirt Fredrick (Jefferson), but he proved that he belongs out there on that court so I’m going to give him this opportunity. Hopefully these guys don’t fall off.”

        2008-2009 Recap

Coming into this season Coach Wolfe knew how difficult improving on a 20 win season and going further than the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament, especially with only 3 seniors, 9 sophomores or younger, and one junior who transferred last season barely know the system on the team. However Wolfe has complete faith in his team and know they will do whatever it takes to achieve greatness.

Starting the season off strong the Bobcats wins 5 out of 6 games with their last game a buzzer beater 51-50 win over Miami (OH). They went on to finish the non-conference with a strong 10-5 record. During conference play Texas State lead by the new BOBCAT 3 (SR SG Brandon Bush, FR SG Edmund Sockwell, SO SF Cameron Johnson) started off strong going on a 6 game winning streak before losing a 73-60 nail bitter to SE Louisiana, but finished second behind Stephen F. Austin by 1 game going 10-6.

With determination and dedication on their minds Texas State strived to surpass 20 wins by winning the Southland Tournament Championship. Texas State cruised their way through the quarter and semi rounds winning by a margin of 25 points showing their dominance but would only meet the 19-8 Stephen F. Austin in the Championship game. With upset on their mind Texas State was able to pull off the victory winning a close one 76-71. The Texas State Bobcats was able to show how impressive they were and how much a threat FR SG Edmund Sockwell is, he averaged 17.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 2.3 blocks per game while shooting 63% FG and 60% 3PT.

Coach Wolfe: “Edmund (Sockwell) was extraordinary during the conference tournament actually it was like he couldn’t miss and on top of that he was getting his teammates involved while showing how great he is on the defensive end. I love how he turned his game up to lead us to the Southland Championship. Watch out NCAA Tournament!”

With 23-11 record and a Southland Tournament Championship the Texas State Bobcats received the 13th seed in the West Region where they will go against #4 Maryland. Sadly, The Terrapins came to prove why they’re ranked #4 with 5 players scoring in double figures and SO C Braxton Dupree leading with 25 points. The Bobcats are destroyed 111-70 ending their impressive 23 win season with a loss in the first round.

Coach Wolfe: “We got in foul trouble with 1 of our starters fouling out. We had no choice but to play their game and pretty much let them have their way with us, but we’re not going put our heads down we’re gonna keep them high because we still was able to get to 23 wins this season and a higher seed in the conference tourney and NCAA tourney with no one getting seriously injured. I say we accomplished something.”

Knowing that he was still captain of the team because this was his senior year SG Brandon Bush earned a spot on the 1st Team All-Southland Team. He proved that he could bring his game to the college level FR SG Edmund Sockwell was named Southland Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the Southland 1st Team All-Freshman Team.

        SURPRISE COMMITMENTS

With only 3 scholarships this season and with an already impressive freshman class already gained, Texas State and Coach Wolfe were close to deciding to not sign anyone this season for it seem like no one was interested playing for Texas State, but with more thought put into the decision they decide to go ahead and use all 3 scholarships signing 1 4* rated player and 2 2* rated players. This new class is lead by 4* recruit 6’2 PG Kelyn Page (Overall #77/#23 PG) from Austin, TX he called Coach Wolfe and decided to commit to Texas State, because he knew in someway that Coach Wolfe would turn him into a great college player. Page averaged 11 points, 4.4 assists, and 2.7 steals per game in the ABL.

Coach Wolfe: “(Kelyn) Page is a very interesting point guard. I like him a lot because he is defensive minded, but also pass first. We need that style of play on our team since our main point man Corey (Jefferson) graduated we are left with just Ryan (White) at point. I love Ryan’s scoring abilities but that’s all his abilities are focused on, so this could be another year that Ryan will be coming off the bench unless Page turns out to be not as good as I believe he is.”

Re: Drive to be Great - Jeremy Wolfe Legacy (CH2K8)

          2009-2010 Recap

This is Coach Wolfe’s third year with Texas State and he believes that this school can still become great. Only losing 2 starters from last year they were still able to keep the core intact. With SO SG Edmund Sockwell and JR SF Cameron Johnson still on board and not planning on leaving any sooner Coach Wolfe still believed they could improve from a 23 win season and surpass the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament. With FR PG Kelyn Page proving he has great skills to add to the team Coach Wolfe is expecting the starter to help lead this team to high achievements.

The season was starting off a lot better than Coach Wolfe expected. Coach Wolfe desired a schedule that would be considered pretty tough for Texas State. Impressively they finished the non-conference 10-4 defeating top 25 teams like Texas (76-68) and Memphis (88-79) while also defeating New Mexico (84-66) and SMU (82-75), 2 of the top 10 Mid-Major Schools this season. Even with JR C Jonathan Sloan breaking his wrist early in the season they were able to step there game. No one expected them to do as well as they did in the non-conference it was almost unbelievable, but someway somehow Texas State was able to pull off clutch victories.

Coach Wolfe: “Honestly I didn’t expect us to be 10-4 in the non-conference but with this drive to be great mentality that these guys have, gave them enough determination and dedication to win those games we were considered the underdog. I can’t tell you how proud I am in them especially Edmund (Sockwell) he was extraordinary. If he keeps that up we’ll improve from last season and he might be looking at a Conference Player of the Year Award. We have to stay consistent.”

They dominated the Southland Conference winning Coach Wolfe his first Regular Season Conference Championship going 13-3 in conference play. The Bobcats won 9 out their first 10 games proving they’re consistency and dominance. They seemed unstoppable it came down to the last game of conference play to determine the rankings, because SE Louisiana were right on there tail the whole season but both teams lost their final game causing Texas State to clinch the #1 spot. SO SG Edmund Sockwell proved that he is player of the year potential proving his dominance averaging nearly a double-double in conference play.

Coach Wolfe: “I’m ecstatic! These guys proved their record this year getting exactly 23 wins before the conference tournament. All we need to do is win one more game, but I know with the way we’re rolling we’ll be winning the Southland Tournament as well. The Texas State Bobcats is a team to be reckoned with just check out our overall record. What is it again…Oh yeah 23-7.”

This season the Southland Conference Tournament was tough for Texas State because the quarter and semi rounds were close games. Actually the only time they were actually able to take a breather was when they went up against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, who caused an upset against SE Louisiana in the semis. The Bobcats would destroy Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 91-66 with SO SG Edmund Sockwell getting a double-double 22 points and 11 assists along with 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks.

Coach Wolfe: “I’m very proud of my team right now. Not only were they clutch earlier in the season, but they were also in the tournament. Edmund (Sockwell) did his thing in the tourney especially in the finals. I can’t forget about (Kelyn) Page and Cameron (Johnson) they really took the load off of Edmund. Now we’re 26-7 and heading for the NCAA Tournament, I can’t wait.”

The Selection Committee doesn’t think Texas State is impressive enough for they seeded them #11 in the West Region against #6 Ohio State, the school Coach Wolfe graduated from. The Bobcats played hard and they were rewarded with a close victory upsetting the Buckeyes 82-74 with SO SG Edmund Sockwell scoring 20 points and FR PG Kelyn Page breaking his season high with 12 assists. The determined Bobcats tried to prove that they are good enough to be ranked higher then what they were, but when they faced #3 Arizona in the second round they were quieted down. The Wildcats picked apart the Bobcats 89-60 with SR SF Chase Budinger from Arizona scoring 22 points ending Texas State’s impressive season at 27-8 and a chance to play in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Coach Wolfe: “One of the best seasons in Texas State history! Though it ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament we proved that we are a force to be reckoned with. I’m proud of my guys and with only one player graduating it looks like we’ll be doing this all over again, but I'm expecting better.”

Coach Wolfe is recognized as the best coach in the conference by being named Conference Coach of the Year. The leadership and dominance of SO SG Edmund Sockwell were rewarded though he didn’t earn Conference Player of the Year status he and also JR SF Cameron Johnson earned a spot on the 1st Team All-Conference Team. Coach Wolfe expected a good season from FR PG Kelyn Page, but Page turned it into a great one earning Conference Freshman of the Year (won 3 years in a row by a Texas State player) and a spot on Southland’s 1st Team All-Freshman Team.

BEST RECRUITMENT LAND FOR COACH WOLFE?

With only one scholarship this year Coach Wolfe didn't know what to do. Texas State was officially put on the map, this cause many Top 100 athletes to be interested. Coach Wolfe would love to sign all of them but sadly he had to choose one. With SF John Rybak graduating he decided to go into the direction of landing a small forward who could replace him. With a tough recruitment pool to pick from Texas State lands 4* rated player the 6'8 SF Jeremiah Milton (Overall #37/#6 SF) all the way from Palatine, IL. He is the highest Overall Ranked player that Coach Wolfe landed for Texas State. With a gem he got out of SG Edmund Sockwell everyone believe that Milton could grow into an even better player. Milton took the ABL by strom leading his team to the ABL Championship Game and averaging a double-double 16.3 points and 12.6 rebounds per game shooting 50% from the field and 48% from 3PT. Along with his great offensive and rebounding skills he also averages 1.5 steals per game to show his defensive side. His playing skills are extraordinary and he's seems to be to good to be true, but he could be better his personality is one of the reasons why he didn't get as many scholarship offers that he deserves.

Coach Wolfe: "Jeremiah (Milton) is gonna be a great addition to the team this upcoming season. I actually met him through a family member that I visited in Illinois. I saw first hand what he can do and yes he's a great player but there is one problem; he's hot-headed. If things don't go his way he takes great offense to it. I seen him getting an argument with his coach and he got in a fight with a player. Many people asked me why I would go after a player like this and here's my answer: when Jeremiah and I talked one-on-one he promised me that he will be a changed man. I told him I believe him and I will see to it that he will be. Once we shook hands on our agreement he told me I was the only coach to actually take the time to talk to him about his personality. I believe in this kid, so much that he already has the starting small or power forward spot."

          2009-2010 Season Outlook

The #11 seeded Duke Blue Devils were able to turn a bad start into a great finish winning the NCAA Championship by defeating Oklahoma State 105-84.

Defensive Player of the Year: SR SF Stanley Robinson (Connecticut)

Yeah honestly I was pretty surprised what happened during these seasons The first season I was sure I wasn't gonna do to well especially with people getting hurt and I feel I got lucky with the recruits. I don't want the luck to stop hopefully they keep it up and don't fall off.

At least its keeping everything interesting especially Syracuse winning two years in a row and I am not a fan of Syracuse.

                2010-2011 Recap

With the signing of a Top 50 prospect and defeating Ohio State in the NCAA Tournament last season really got a lot of people looking out for Texas State. However Texas State’s non-conference schedule isn’t tough at all. The only team that everyone considered going to be a tough game is against Texas, who is ranked #12 at the beginning of the season. Coach Wolfe was pretty upset about it, but decided to not stress about it and see what unfolds.

Coach Wolfe: “It’s my fault I should have said something instead of letting my assistants make the schedule. Obviously they don’t believe in our team, but I’m not gonna go into to all that. They already finalized the schedule, so we gonna play on it.”

The Texas State Bobcats came out blazing winning 5 games straight. However 4 out the 5 teams' RPI were 200 or below, so obviously they were suppose to blow those teams out as bad as they did. During 2 of those games 2 key players were seriously hurt; JR PF Lennox Nabors sprained his ankle and SR SF Cameron Johnson strained his Achilles. After those first 5 games they were exposed losing 4 games straight each team having their way, even Middle Tennessee (RPI 86) murdered them 82-50. They were able to bounce back beating Davidson and Dayton to win the Gulf Coast Challenge, Texas State would finish 8-5 before heading into conference play.

Even though everyone was back from injury Texas State would still lose out on the Regular Season Conference Championship placing third place with an 11-5 record in conference play. Many of the games they lost were games they should have won and some games they were just destroyed. Coach Wolfe finally realized the problem, so immediately after their final regular season conference game against Lamar he talked to them about their chemistry and how if they keep having problems with each other they will lose in the Conference Tourney and maybe miss out on playing in the NCAA Tournament. Two days before the Conference Tournament starts Coach Wolfe caught all his players sitting and talking in the locker room.

Coach Wolfe: “First injuries hit us and it really crippled us for awhile. Of course when your key players, your starters, get hurt and can’t play you give players more minutes and with a lot of minutes for a long period of time it got to their heads. Once the everyone was healed up it caused problems because everyone didn’t wanna lose minutes, so I had a underclassmen versus upperclassmen epidemic on my hands. I talked to them about it and it must have clicked because they were having a player’s only meeting. This showed me that they are serious about this team and its success, so let’s see how well it works in the conference tournament.”

The players’ only meeting worked tremendously for they took the Southland Conference Tournament by storm. The Bobcats demolished every team that came their way by an averaged margin of 26 points. Everyone on the team contributed someway, not just 1 player took all the glory every player who played deserves credit. Texas State would come out on top winning Coach Wolfe his 4th straight Conference Tournament Championship and head to NCAA Tournament 4 times straight. The Texas State Bobcats would finish 22-10 overall before the selection committee decides where everyone will be seeded.

Coach Wolfe: “I’m very happy for these guys. They squashed their differences and their problems to accomplish a goal. They all played hard and players who barely play stepped up, so for a reward they’ll get more minutes as long as they keep it up. I’m very excited to win OUR 4th Conference Tournament Title it’s a big achievement and I’m proud of them. If they keep this up we can make it to the Elite Eight for sure depending on our seeding and who we face.”

The Selection Committee punished them for their overall record giving Texas State the 14th seed after being seeded 11th last season. They would go against the #3 seed Ole Miss in the South Regional making the Bobcats’ chances at making their Elite Eight run a tough one, but they were able to win the tough game by a buzzer beater. In the victory SR SF Cameron Johnson would score 19 points and pull down 7 rebounds along with SR C Jonathan Sloan scoring 24 points in 21 minutes from off the bench. They were determined and dedicated to be great trying to begin their Cinderella story, but in one of their hardest games yet that had to be decided in overtime the Bobcats couldn’t pull off the win losing to #11 seed Connecticut 87-84 in the second round. Their dream of at least making it to the Elite Eight were cancelled thanks to Connecticut beating them in a nail bitter with their JR SG Willis Sykes scoring 23 points.

Coach Wolfe: “We wanted to make it to the Elite Eight for the sake of all of the seniors; Cameron (Johnson), Jonathan (Sloan), Ty (Gough), Ryan (White), and Fredrick (Jefferson). We couldn’t do it Connecticut were just 3 points better than us. We played as hard as we could and they just outplayed us in the final minutes, but if I had to choose I would still pick this team over the other. This team we have this year is who I believe Final Four material and I don’t care what anyone say that’s how I feel. I’m proud of what these guys done for me all these years couldn’t of ask for a better group of players.”

Coach Jeremy Wolfe signs New Contract with New Team

With the last coach retiring Miami University in Oxford, Ohio had to look for a new coach and they pursued heavily on young up-rising coach Jeremy Wolfe. Miami (OH) had begun pursuing Coach Wolfe and one other coach during the middle of the season hoping for one of them to jump on the offer. A lot of talk and negotiation had to take place for Coach Wolfe to even consider taking the job. They were planning on signing another coach, but when they noticed how he coached the Bobcats out of a bad situation they decided to not sign the other coach. In the end Coach Wolfe signs a 3 year contract with the Redhawks hoping to bring this Mid-Major school to the promise land.

Coach Wolfe: "Man, this is an honor. I wanna thank Texas State’s athletic board for having me because without them and those players I wouldn’t be offered a job here. Honestly though I wasn’t gonna take this job, but with a lot of thinking and talking with family and friends I knew this was the right choice. Taking the job at Miami University of the Mid-American Conference brings me closer to home and this is where I always wanted to coach near, so that my family could come to the games. I let Texas State know after the Tournament that I wouldn’t be renewing my contract and I would be going somewhere else. I especially got all my players including the graduating ones together and I told them what my plans were. I’m proud of those guys and I wouldn’t leave unless I knew they were in good hands.”

Though Coach Wolfe moved teams doesn't mean that offseason recruiting was over, as he still has 3 scholarships to hand out, and he didn’t hesitate to contact two high school big men; 3* rated players 6’10 C Maynard Coulter and 6’8 PF Damien Akingbala. He met Coulter in Toledo, Ohio, Coach Wolfe’s hometown, this is where Coach Wolfe played high school ball at and where he first started his coaching career, so that was a big reason for Coulter to commit to Miami (OH). Coach Wolfe coached Coulter’s older brother when he was coaching at the ABL level and Coulter’s brother told him bout his younger brother. Coach Wolfe feels that though he is #441 Overall he is a gem, Coulter averaged 9.3 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks in 25.6 minutes per game in the ABL. Indianapolis, Indiana’s own Akingbala was interested in playing under Coach Wolfe ever since he heard about how good of a player he turned SF Jeremiah Milton into his first season on campus, so Akingbala wants the same thing for him. Coach Wolfe stayed in touch with him until the time was right and Akingbala committed. PF Damien Akingbala (#153 Overall/#22 PF) averaged 14.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game shooting 49% FG.

Coach Wolfe landed 5* junior college FR 6’7 PF Chad Blake as well. Coach Wolfe didn’t see him to much but believes he will be a great asset to the team at the power forward spot along with Akingbala. Coach Wolfe takes a big risk landing Blake for he is known to be inconsistent and that’s a big liability that Coach Wolfe doesn’t want to believe is true.

                  Good luck with this, man!

Just curious, why are you simming all the way to the 2011-2012 season, though?

Well I played one full season before I posted and I ended up only losing 4 games and I won the NCAA Championship, I didn't like that. I haven't been able to find the right sliders for me yet to make these season more realistic. When I play even if I have a bad team I find a hole in the defense and I win by a unrealistic margin. By simming I was hoping the seasons would be realistic then when it is time for me to play I would be either with a new team or my team would be really good so I can make a realistic schedule against top schools that way I'm able make realistic and interesting games. Hopefully I can find interesting sliders.
