Building A Foundation | Josh Rudd's Coaching Legacy [NCAA 10]

Hey Guys, I'm back for yet again another dynasty here. This one will be on NCAA 10, but don't be disappointed because it will have updated rosters (link down below). I'll try to make it as realistic to 2013 as I can I will be trying to work my way up through the ranks of the college system. Let's go and get this thing started.

Illinois State Hires Josh Rudd As Their New Basketball Coach

Bloomington-Normal, Illinois (AP) Illinois State currently holds the longest NCAA tournament drought in the Missouri Valley Conference. The last time the Redbirds reached the Big Dance in 1998, and Josh Rudd was wearing a high school uniform. Now, the former basketball player will look to lead a senior-laden team back to the NCAAs as the school's new coach.

While Illinois State has a ton of seniors on their teams, it looks like their veteran experience can drive them in the right direction. Forward Jackie Carmichael is back from another Missouri Valley Conference First-Team year (the second time he made it to the team). He could be back and better than ever, as he averaged 13.7 points per game and 9.8 rebounds per game last year, and could add a lot of leadership for Coach Rudd's team. This could be Illinois State's best back court in almost a decade, as they have senior Tyler Brown, who averaged 13.5 points per game and 4.1 assists per game last year, and they also brought in 4 star recruit Josh Bradley. Bradley is expected to be a starter from day 1 for Coach Josh Rudd's team. However, Bradley is the only freshman on the team this year, so Rudd will have to hit the recruiting trails early and often. This team could be able to go to the NCAA tourney, if the can play like a team.

Josh Rudd was a coach for Big Red High School, and was 60-4 in 3 seasons for the team. He lead them to 2 state titles also. Rudd is 26, and still has a lot of up-side to him. He is famously known for running a up-tempo offense while he was coaching in high school, and could become "trap-happy. Rudd said his press conference "I hope this can be a great year us, as we have a lot of talent on our team. I talked to most of our players today, and they agreed they all wanted to make the NCAA tourney for the first time in their careers. I think they all have good potential in the class room and on the court. I'm excited to be their coach this year". It looks like Illinois State has found their guy, and hopefully he can do well.

Illinois State has a new coach, but there is a lot of returning talent for Josh Rudd to work with. The key for the Redbirds will be finding a point guard to replace Nic Moore. Fortunately, there are quite a few options. Anthony Cousin started 14 games last season and is an experienced senior who is pretty much a true point guard. Cousin’s lack of scoring prowess could keep him on the bench though. Johnny Hill is not a true point guard and rarely played as a freshman, but he could be in the mix at the point as well. Bryant Allen was the sixth man last season and is known more for his shooting ability than his ball handling skills, but he did run the point off of the bench on occasion last season.

                2011-12 Record: 21-14, 9-9
                2011-12 Postseason: NIT
                Coach: Josh Rudd
Coach Record: First year at Illinois State, 0-0 overall

                Who’s Out:
Moore’s absence will be felt for more than just his passing ability. He is following his old coach to SMU after tallying 10.0 points and 3.9 assists as a freshman. Moore proved to be a quality shooter and that always made him a dangerous player with the ball in his hands. Little used guards Trey Blue and Darious Clark have also transferred, but Moore’s unexpected departure is the one thing that could keep Illinois State out of the race for a Missouri Valley title.

                Who’s In:
The key addition for this Redbird's team is Joe Bradley. Bradley is a guard who his mainly a 3 point specialist, but also loves to handle the offense. Bradley will be pretty much be the starter at shooting guard, since day 1. Bradley is also a underrated passer, but his main issue is taking good shots, as he's a very inconsistent shooter. Kaza Keane will be thrown into the mix at the point guard position and, eventually, he could very well step into the starting role. Keane was a late pickup for the Redbirds, but he obviously fills a huge need. The Canadian has a little more scoring pop than a player like Cousin, but it will all come down to adjusting to this level of competition and picking up the system. When Keane is ready to go, he can be the scoring point guard Coach Rudd wants. Nick Zeisloft will suit up for the Redbirds this season after redshirting last year. The 6-4 wing is a great shooter and he has the potential to provide a great offensive spark off of the bench when his shot is falling. John Jones, a 6-9 forward, could be eligible this season as a sophomore. However, on a squad with a slew of options in the frontcourt, Jones could redshirt even if he is eligible. Yet, he is a fine talent and keeping him on the bench for two years in a row could be difficult.

                Who to Watch:
With or without Jones, the Redbirds frontcourt is in great hands. Jackie Carmichael, a 6-9 senior, will dominate the paint one more time for Illinois State. Last season he led the squad with 13.7 points, 9.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per contest. While Carmichael does spend most of his time in the paint, he can knock down the mid-range jumper and has turned into a solid free-throw shooter as well. Junior Jon Ekey will join Carmichael in the frontcourt once again. Ekey is a more versatile player than Carmichael. He can step outside and hit the three-pointer with consistency, but he can fall in love with the jump shot a little too easily at times. He is not a strong interior scorer, but he can be more than a shooter. John Wilkins is one of the more intriguing players in the Missouri Valley Conference. He is a 6-9 wing who is a matchup nightmare. Wilkins can shoot over smaller defenders with ease or use his quickness to get around the opposition that can match his size. At 230 pounds, Wilkins can easily spend time at the four spot when Coach Muller wants a quicker lineup on the floor. But with all of the talent in the frontcourt, Wilkins should spend most of his time at the three spot. Sophomore Jordan Threloff should be ready to provide more depth in the frontcourt after averaging 10.5 minutes per game as a freshman. If Jones is suiting up this year, no team in the MVC can match the quality depth that Illinois State sports this season. If Threloff is ready to step up as a sophomore, the Redbirds will not even need Jones to be the best the MVC has to offer.

                Final Projection:
The point guard play will determine how good this squad will be in 2012-2013, but the Redbirds have other weapons on the perimeter. Tyler Brown came from the junior college ranks and had a superb debut season in Normal. Brown was the most prolific shooter on a team that is full of quality shooters. Ekey and Allen shot over 40 percent from beyond the arc, but it was Brown who led the way connecting on 45.4 percent of his attempts from long range. But Brown can do more than shoot. He tallied 13.7 points per game and led the team in steals as well. Zeke Upshaw will join the leftovers from the point guard battle providing depth on the perimeter. As much talk as there has been, and will be, about finding a new point guard, Illinois State does not really need the point guard to do much beside handle the pressure and find the scorers. That may be easier said than done, but Cousin is a proven distributor and getting help from a player like Keane will just be a bonus.

                Predicted Record: 19-11

                Projected Starting Five:
                Joe Bradley, Freshman, Guard
                Tyler Brown, Senior, Guard
                John Wilkins, Foward, Guard
                Jon Ekey, Forward, Junior,
                Jackie Carmichael, Senior

Thanks pfeifere, this should be a pretty fun dynasty. I've always enjoying playing NCAA basketball games (I wish they still made them). For the updated rosters, I used Gator's roster update (link http://adf.ly/G6H4K) and I put them onto a Zip drive and downloaded them to my PS3. If you need help doing it just send me a PM, and I'd be glad to help.

Illinois State Controls VCU 68-52, First Win In The Rudd Era

Bloomington-Normal, Illinois (AP) - Well it's that time again for Redbirds fans, the opening game. Usually Illinois State schedules a game vs Northern Illinois or a smaller Illinois team for a easy first win, but this year they played a team about equal to them in VCU. It would turn out to be a great game, but the Redbirds would come out with a 68-52 win. Jackie Carmichael had a double-double, with 22 (10/16 from the field) and 10 rebounds. Carmichael was the leading rebounder throughout the game for Illinois State. John Wilkins also pitched in with 18 points (6/12 from the field, 2/5 from 3pt shooting) and had a career high 4 blocks (1 sky of Illinois State's school record). Joe Bradley, Illinois State's top recruit a year ago missed the game, but is expected to play Thursday vs Wright State. Bradley has a day-to-day ankle-sprain, but doctors say it's nothing to worry about and he is cleared to play. Coach Rudd said after the game "I was very happy how our team played, and I was also impressed by our senior leadership. Our gym was rocking tonight, and we didn't disappoint. We can go as far as our team can take us this year. This is going to be a fun first year." Illinois State was very aggressive throughout the game, running their full-court trap. They forced VCU into a lot of turnovers, and that ultimately won them the game. It's good to see Josh Rudd start his ISU career on a good note, hopefully he can keep it up.

Virginia Commonwealth, coached by Shaka Smart, didn't play as well as we expected them to. Usually a Shaka coached team doesn't commit a ton of turnovers, but today they had a hard time holding onto the ball. Illinois State's trap was working like magic. VCU's leading scorer was Bradford Burgress who had 19 points (6/20 shooting, 1/10 3pt shooting) and also shipped in with 2 assists. Although Bradford scored 19 points, he struggled shooting most of the day. However, he was the only player on VCU to score in double-figures. The closest was Darius Theus who scored 9 points (3/9 shooting) and had 3 assists. VCU's bench was also a problem in the game. Troy Daniels was their leading scorer of the bench, but he did struggle shooting the ball. Daniels had 6 points (2/10 shooting, 2/4 3pt shooting) and 4 rebounds. VCU will have to look for more options on offense if they want to improve. Coach Shaka Smart said after the game "I know we can play better than that. We just didn't hustle enough, and there's much to be desired from that game. We'll have to rebound from this loss." Shaka is right, his team has potential to make it back to the NCAA tournament, but their going to have to play better if they want to make it there again.

Redbirds Defeat Wright State 69-55 To Improve To 2-0

Bloomington-Normal, Illinois (AP) - After starting off the Josh Rudd era in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois State got the win vs Wright State at home too. It would prove to be a good game, but the Redbirds won by a score of 69-55. It was a close game throughout the day, but in the end Illinois State went on a 10-2 run in the final minute to clinch the game, and a 2-0 record. Illinois State's highly touted freshman, Joe Bradley played his first game of his young career. Bradley had 18 points (7/9 shooting, 4/6 3pt shooting) and also grabbed 2 rebounds. Bradley was Illinois State's first freshman to start a game since 2004. He was a driving force throughout the whole game, and turned out to be Illinois State's leading scorer. Redbird's senior Jackie Carmichael also contributed with 14 points (6/12 shooting) and pulled in 9 rebounds. Bradley and Carmichael are looking to be the Redbird's driving force on offense. Coach Rudd said after the game "I was impressed at how Joe Bradley came out and played tonight. It's always rough playing your first game with the team, but he made it look easy today. He was so good knocking down the three-ball. We have a lot of veteran presence, and I think that'll guide us in the right direction." Even though Wright State wasn't the best competition, It's always good to start the season 2-0, and ISU could do some damage this year.

While Wright State wasn't the favorite going into the game, they still put up a fight versus Illinois State. They played them close, even though they never took the lead in the whole game. However, Wright State had a few chances to win the game in the end, but they just couldn't pull it off. Reggie Arcenealix was the leading scorer for the team, having 20 points (8/13 shooting, 3/7 FT shooting) while dishing out 4 assists to his teammates. Wright State was almost too dependent on Arcenealix throughout the game, as they created a lot of isolation players for him. Cole Darling was the only other player to score in double figures. Darling had 12 points (5/7 shooting) while grabbing 7 rebounds and dishing out 1 assist. VCU's next scorer after that however, was off the bench JT Yoho who shipped in with 9 points (3/10 shooting, 3/9 3pt shooting). Wright State might want to look for some more production if they want to put together a winning record, as they looked too reliant on Darling and Arcenealix. While Wright State has started off the season 0-2, they have good potential if they can just find another scorer.

Illinois State Falls In The Hands Of Cincinnati, 65-56

Bloomington-Normal, Illinois (AP) - You could make a argument that this would be on of the biggest games Illinois State plays all year, and not just because of the conference the team is playing in. If Illinois State would've won that game, they would've made a name for themselves, as this was the first televised game for Illinois State in about a year. It turned out to be a really good game, but Illinois State just couldn't win it in the end. Illinois State was lead in scoring by Joe Bradley, who scored 19 points (7/15 shooting, 5/10 3pt shooting) and also grabbed 3 rebounds. Bradley was very consistent scoring, until the last minutes of the game, where he was 1/5 shooting. However, he was pretty much Illinois State's scoring force. Jackie Carmichael also chipped in with 12 points (3/12 shooting, 6/6 FT shooting) grabbing 8 rebounds and rejecting 2 shots. Carmichael had trouble in the post to start the game, but he settled down at the end of the game. Carmichael did a good job getting to the free throw line. Carmichael and Bradley where the only Redbirds in double-figures scoring. While this doesn't look like a problem, as in college teams mostly only have 2 scorers regularly in double-figures, It's always nice to have some more guys to carry the offense. While I'm sure Illinois State is disappointed by the loss, they need to bounce back next game.

Cincinnati has been playing good basketball all year, and that's what you got to do if you want success in the Big East. So far this season, they had wins Mississippi Valley, Alabama, and now Illinois State. Cincinnati this year is lead by guard/foward Jaquon Parker. Parker had 27 points in the game (9/12 shooting, 3/3 3pt shooting, 6/7 FT shooting) chipping in with 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Parker was easily the leading scorer by the team, and the leading scorer in the game. However, Parker did get some help with Sean Kilpatrick and Cashmere Wright in double-figures. Kilpatrick had 15 points (5/7 shooting, 5/6 FT shooting) with 2 rebounds and 2 assists, while Wright had 12 points (6/12 shooting) and 4 boards. Kilpatrick is a very good scorer for Cincinnati, and has developed very well throughout his career there. Some pretty solid play by Cincinnati. Cincinnati had the lead throughout the game, and only trailed early on. Those are the keys to success if Cincinnati wants to be dangerous in the Big East. They'll control their own destiny throughout the whole season, so It'll be interesting to see how they do.

Tough one against Cincy. Parker was hot!

Good start to the season, regardless.
