"Nowhere to Hide" The Coaching Legacy of Jason Kidd (NBA 2K13)

No Country for Old Men: A Utah Jazz Story.

Stockton and Malone dominated the league for nearly two decades as teammates on the Utah Jazz. While they were unable to win a championship together — they came up short in the NBA Finals twice, both times against Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls — they're recognized as some of the best players to have ever graced the hardwood, especially at their respective positions. Stockton is often viewed as the ultimate point guard and there are only two players in NBA history who have ever scored more points in their career than Malone.

On the strength of Stockton's passing and Malone's scoring, the two formed arguably the most feared pick-and-roll tandem in league history. In real life, 2002-03 was the final season for the duo, as Stockton retired and Malone joined up with Gary Payton, Kobe Bryant and Shaq to form a superteam with the Lakers. Again Malone came up short, losing the NBA Finals to the Detroit Pistons.

While the Utah Jazz had a decent rebuild when they drafted Deron Williams in 2005 and teamed him with Carlos Boozer, they never made the NBA finals again. Let's see what I can do with the duo in their last season or two together.

            NBA Draft 2002 Review.

            Utah Jazz Draft Review.

            Round 1: Nenad Krstic, 7-1, C, Yugoslavia (No. 19)
Round 2: Luis Scola, 6-9, PF, Argentian (No. 47)

Nenad Kristic was a great pick here. He may not be able to come over and play for another year, but when he does arrive he'll be considered a steal at No. 19. Teams already compare him to a young Vlade Divac. At 7-foot-1 he can rebound, block shots and shoot from the perimeter. The biggest question left? Does he know how to flop?

Luis Scola is a year or two away, but they knew that. All in all, not bad for the 47th pick. Jazz really solidified their frontcourt here with two solid pickups.

Utah Jazz' new European GM shows us his international scouting ability with both of these picks.

            Grade: A-

              Jazz Sign Guard Larry Hughes.

              Jazz Sign Guard Larry Hughes.

              July 18, 2002

Utah (AP) _ Free-agent guard Larry Hughes signed a three-year contract with the Utah Jazz on Thursday.

The 6-foot-5, 184-pound Hughes, who can play either guard position, will have an opening salary of $4.5 million. He averaged 12.4 points and 4.3 assists in 73 games with the Golden State Warriors last season.

He’s averaged 13.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists during a four-year NBA career with Philadelphia and Golden State.

During the 2000-01 season, Hughes averaged career highs in points (16.5), rebounds (5.5), assists (4.5) and steals (1.5) _ joining Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady, Jason Kidd, Steve Francis and Antoine Walker as the only players to average at least 16 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.5 steals that season.

We are confident that Larry Hughes will make a significant contribution to our team,″ Jazz general manager Mike Shields said.

He adds versatility to our roster with his ability to play both of the guard positions and his athleticism will help us on both ends of the floor.″

Hughes left Saint Louis University after his freshman year and was the eighth overall selection in the 1998 draft by Philadelphia.

                Jazz Sign Jose Calderon.

                Jazz Sign Jose Calderon.

                OCT. 2, 2002

SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- The Utah Jazz announced Wednesday they have signed free-agent point guard Jose Calderon. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Calderon, 6-foot-3, 205 pounds, has spent the past five seasons in the Spanish pro leagues, the past f
two with Fuenlabrada. He led Fuenlabrada to a second-place finish in last season’s Euroleague Final Four.

“We are very excited to be able to reach an agreement to bring Jose to the NBA,” said Jazz General Manager Mike Shields. “He is exactly what we are looking for in a true point guard.

“Even though he won’t turn 22-years-old until September, he has plenty of experience in international competition.”

Calderon has averaged 10.9 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 214 regular-season games. He owns a career field goal percentage of .541 (488-902). In Euroleague play, Calderon has averaged 9.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 58 contests.

Calderon averaged 12.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 39 regular-season games in 2003-04. He shot .567 (114-201) from the field and .823 (107-130) from the foul line. In 2003-04, he led Tau to the Spanish National Cup (King’s Cup).

Calderon now joins a somewhat growing foreign legion in Utah now under Irish GM Mike Shields. Nenad Krstic (Yugoslavia), Luis Scola (Argentina) who were just drafted this summer to join Andrei Kirilenko (Russia) and Carlos Arroyo (Puerto Rico) Lets see if the Utah Jazz play style now adds some international flair to complement the Stockton and Malone duo.

Butch Carter out, D'Antoni in, as Raptors change Head Coaches.

Butch Carter out, D'Antoni in, as Raptors change Head Coaches.

                  July 3rd, 2000

                  >Toronto -- Butch Carter was fired Monday as coach of the Raptors after disagreements with some of his star players.

The Raptors are expected to again compete for the playoffs this season with or without the re-signing of Tracy McGrady. After helping to nurture McGrady and teammate Vince Carter to near superstar status in the National Basketball Association and directing the Raptors to their best-ever season, Butch Carter was abruptly fired as the Raptors' head coach yesterday morning.

The news was delivered to Mr. Carter during a meeting at Toronto's Air Canada Centre by Raptors general manager Glen Grunwald, Mr. Carter's friend of 20 years. Mr. Grunwald told reporters later that he is intent on restoring a sense of stability to the franchise.

"The off-court distractions were disconcerting to fans and the organization and there was no other alternative," a visibly uncomfortable Mr. Grunwald said. "This was the final option."

Mr. Carter, who addressed the media later in the day, said he could see his job in danger even before the season had ended.

"I did not want out of Toronto," said Mr. Carter, who got a three-year, $6-million contract. Carter tried to instigate a power coup in Toronto, and also advocated to trade Vince Carter to the New York Knicks.

D’Antoni began his career as head coach for his most loyal club, Olimpia Milan. He remained there for four seasons, from 1990 to 1994, leading the club to a 1992 FIBA EuroLeague Final Four appearance, and a 1992–93 season FIBA Korać Cup title. He was then chosen to coach Benetton Treviso, another major Italian league basketball club.

During his tenure with Treviso (1994–1997), the team captured the FIBA European Cup (later renamed Saporta Cup) and Italian Cup (in 1995), and won the Italian national domestic league title in the 1996–97 season. Coach D’Antoni's Italian club teams went to the Italian League's playoffs each season.

D'Antoni's first NBA coaching job was with the Denver Nuggets in 1997–98 as the club's director of player personnel. He also did some broadcasting work with TNT that season. The next year, he became the Nuggets' head coach, but was fired after a poor performance during the lockout-shortened 1998–99 season.

However the opportunity to jump to an up and coming franchise like the Raptors was just at the right time for D'Antoni. D'Antoni being a younger coach is being brought in to grow with the young superstar Vince Carter and hopefully McGrady too. D'Antoni will appoint Dwane Casey as Assistant Coach.

"I think we have to focus on maximising our offensive talent," D'Antoni said. "I believe offense wins games, coupled with solid defense. We have some superb offensive players and I hope to really unlock them. Hopefully we can retain Tracy and he can become a dual threat with Vince. It's time for him to start if he re-signs."

Carter, in his third year with the team, is the sixth NBA coach to be fired this off season. He was in the final year of his contract. Darrell Walker - Wizards, Lionel Hollins - Grizzlies, Don Casey - Nets, Jim Todd - Clippers, Garry St. Jean - Warriors were also fired within the last month.

"The Raptors can be an even better team than their current record," GM Glen Grunwald said. "We are committed to helping this team achieve its true potential this year as the Raptors have some of the best talent in the NBA.

"Butch Carter is a good person and a fine coach. But we felt that a change was necessary to help the Raptors achieve their goals for the season." NBA writers are sceptical that D'Antoni is the right hire, as NBA coaching legend Lenny Wilkens was also rumored to have interviewed for the role. D'Antoni is unproven in the NBA, but a winner in Europe. Perhaps Primoz Brezec and Radojevic may get more playing time than expected this year.

Trust me, Fields and Johnson aren't worth Humphries in the game. Fields is good from the perimeter but not up close and Johnson is only mediocre at rebounds but nothing else.

                      McGrady re-signs with Raptors.

                      McGrady re-signs with Raptors.

                      August 1st, 2000

Toronto -- The Toronto Raptors' plan to resign Tracy McGrady has succeeded.

Tracy McGrady called a news conference at the Raptors' practice facility at the Air Canada Centre for 3:30 p.m. EDT Wednesday at which time he was expected to commit his future to Toronto in a six-year contract extension worth around $67.5 million US.

The news was trumpeted in Toronto newspapers Wednesday.

"This could be our lucky day," added the tabloid.

McGrady, 21, wasn't speaking Tuesday and Toronto GM Glen Grunwald, saying he was in the dark, could only wait and hope.

After wavering between Orlando, Chicago and Miami during the past week, McGrady has settled on re-signing with the Raptors, his agent said Wednesday night.

"Blood runs thicker than water, Vince convinced Tracy to stick it out with him in Toronto for another few years.” Tellem said.

"We've been talking to Tracy about our desire to make sure he's happy here, and we want him to be a Raptor for life. We have the potential to become one of the best teams in the NBA with Tracy and Vince as our young emerging stars. We have hired a new forward thinking coach in Mike D'Antoni who see's Tracy as an instrumental part of the Raptors future." said Grunwald.

McGrady's extension will be the maximum allowed under NBA rules. He is a three-year veteran of the league.

With his rookie contract expiring today on his existing deal, the extension should keep him in Toronto until he is 27.

After a season spent dodging rumors and questions about his future plans, and giving no inkling to which way he was leaning, McGrady's camp suggested Monday he may be close to signing with the Magic. The Raptors hiring of D'Antoni seemed to be the turning point as D'Antoni impressed McGrady in a 3 hour meeting late last night. D'Antoni's insistence that McGrady is a key starter was apparently the turning point.

The Raptors are coming off their most successful season in franchise history, losing to the Knicks in the First Round of the Eastern Conference playoffs after a 45-37 record in the regular season.

Despite being swept 3-0 the series was a lot closer than first meets the eye.

The Raptors are still looking to fine tune their roster this offseason.

wow interesting story you have here! This made me start a new association with the Nets sans Coach Kidd.

Honestly, I dont like trading Marshon brooks in 2k as he can improve well depending on his potential.

                        Keep this up. Ill follow!

                            Eastern Conference Preview.

                            ATLANTIC DIVISION

                            MIAMI HEAT
Last season -- 52-30. Knocked out by the Knicks in the playoffs three straight years.

                            Additions
F Anthony Mason, G Ricky Davis,
F Dale Ellis, F Brian Grant,
G Rick Brunson, F Todd Fuller,
F Don MacLean, G Eddie House.

                            Key losses
                            C Alonzo Mourning, F P.J. Brown,
F Jamal Mashburn, F Otis Thorpe,
                            F Clarence Weatherspoon.

Outlook -- Losing Mourning for the season to a kidney disorder may be one of the cruelest blows in Pat Riley's career. His first victory will be the 1,000th of his coaching career, and he has much to be optimistic about after remaking the Heat. Questions remain: Can Grant play center in a not-so-rugged East and can Tim Hardaway's aching knees last beyond an 82-game grind? Somehow, some way, Riley will get them to the finals.

                            PHILADELPHIA 76ERS

Last season -- 49-33. Slipped to Pacers in the second round the past two years.

                            Key losses

                            G Kevin Ollie

Outlook -- Beyond all the combustible possibilities between the rap artist/point guard Allen Iverson and the old-school coach/new-school baby sitter Larry Brown, the 76ers have one of the league's more experienced, stable teams. But Claxton, the rookie point guard from Hofstra, is gone with a season-ending knee injury. Still, Toni Kukoc is only going to get more comfortable with his teammates, and a front line featuring Theo Ratliff and Matt Geiger qualifies as loaded in the East. Iverson's crossover is still the most deadly weapon in the conference, lethal enough to combat his off-court distractions. He could lead the 76ers to the finals. Of course, he could also be traded before the season opener.

                            NEW YORK KNICKS

Last season -- 50-32. Two straight conference finals appearances.

                            Additions
                            , C Felton Spencer

                            Key losses
                            None

Outlook -- After Jerry Sloan, Rudy Tomjanovich and Pat Riley, what coach has the most longevity with one team? Jeff Van Gundy, the original survivor. Now, he has to get Ewing to play the good soldier as sixth man, make his big men bring the ball upcourt occasionally and deliver another dramatic playoff run. Allan Houston is one of the best shooters in the league. Ewing is a shadow of himself, but once he is healthy, New Yorkers will have one last run with big Pat. Unless they trade him that is. Knicks are already looking towards next summer for reloading when Houston and Ewing come off the books. Marcus Camby has made it clear he is not a center. The bigger issue is, can he be a healthy forward?

                            ORLANDO MAGIC

Last season -- 41-41. Hasn't made it to the second round since Shaq left.

                            Additions
F Grant Hill, G Eddie Jones
F Andrew DeClercq, F Mike Miller, G Dee Brown,
G Troy Hudson, C Don Reid.

                            Key losses
F Ben Wallace, G Chucky Atkins,
G Corey Maggette, F Derek Strong, G Ron Mercer,
G Matt Harpring, G Chauncey Billups.

Outlook -- Landing Hill and Jones is a nice catch, but the big fish stayed in San Antonio. Without Tim Duncan, the Magic is another high-octane East team and little else. Neither Hill nor Jones has the personality to implode, so chemistry between the two stars shouldn't be a problem. But of all Orlando's key losses, Atkins may hurt the most. When Darrell Armstrong was out, Atkins made that team go.

                            NEW JERSEY NETS

Last season -- 31-51. Nets are on their fourth coach in four years.

                            Additions
F Kenyon Martin, F Soumaila Samake,
                            F Aaron Williams.

                            Key losses
                            F Jayson Williams,
                            F Scott Burrell.

Outlook -- Offering Kendall Gill enough money to spurn an offer from the Lakers may have been one of their best off-season moves. With Kittles's health a major concern and Keith Van Horn missing perhaps the first six weeks with a broken leg, Gill emerges as one of the few players who can keep the ship afloat before January. Stephon Marbury should finally have an All-Star moment. If Byron Scott is patient, the Nets could return to the postseason for the first time since 1997.

                            BOSTON CELTICS

                            Last season -- 35-47. It's Year 4 of Rick Pitino's refurbishing plan.

                            Additions
F Jerome Moiso, G Bryant Stith,
G Randy Brown, G Chris Carr.

                            Key losses
F Danny Fortson, G Dana Barros,
                            G Robert Pack.

Outlook -- Antoine Walker, Paul Pierce and Kenny Anderson qualify as a solid nucleus, but Pitino has yet to find a cast of role players to push the Celtics into the playoffs. One brutal statistic emerges: he is 180-198 as an N.B.A. coach, and if the winning percentage doesn't rise soon, Pitino has said he will not coach the Celtics beyond this season. Pierce, still recovering from a nightclub stabbing over the summer, has All-Star potential.

                            WASHINGTON WIZARDS

Last season -- 29-53. Franchise has not won a playoff game in 12 years.

                            Additions
G Felipe Lopez, F Cherokee Parks,
F Obinna Ekeze, F Popeye Jones, F Mike Smith.

                            Key losses
G Tracy Murray, C Ike Austin,
F Aaron Williams, C Don Reid.

Outlook -- Juwan Howard, Mitch Richmond and Rod Strickland have a huge burden. Because of their salaries, the Wizards are almost unable to trade them or put a nice assortment of players around them. The reality is, Howard has played three playoff games since signing a $105 million contract in 1996; it doesn't appear he will play another in Washington anytime soon.

                            CENTRAL DIVISION

                            TORONTO RAPTORS

Last season -- 45-37. Since Charles Oakley has been there, they've won.

                            Additions
C Primoz Brezec, F Ime Udoka

                            Key losses
                            G Dee Brown

Outlook -- With Doug Christie seemingly now at the point setting up the breathtaking Vince Carter and with Tracy McGrady starting, Toronto looks strong. Throw in a big-man stable of Antonio Davis, Charles Oakley and Kevin Willis, and this is a team capable of advancing to the finals. Keeping McGrady is a big win and D'Antoni is banking on making it back to at least the first round.

                            MILWAUKEE BUCKS

Last season -- 42-40. Came within a defensive rebound of upsetting Pacers in first round.

                            Additions
F Jason Caffey, C Joel Przybilla,
                            G Lindsey Hunter.

                            Key losses
F Billy Owens, F Danny Manning,
G Vinny Del Negro, F Robert Traylor.

Outlook -- Ray Allen is on the cusp of becoming one of the game's top five players. Glenn Robinson still has trouble guarding anyone and Sam Cassell's herky-jerky game has been constrained by minor injuries the past two years. But Caffey was a nice pickup, along with the rookie Przybilla. The Bucks play defense almost as hard as New York. If they don't tune George Karl out, they could win the conference.

                            CHARLOTTE HORNETS

Last season -- 49-33. Charlotte has gone 71-46 with Paul Silas in charge.

                            Additions
                            F P.J. Brown, F Jamal Mashburn,
F Tim James, F Otis Thorpe, G Hersey Hawkins,
F Jamaal Magloire, F Lee Nailon.

                            Key losses
G Eddie Jones, F Anthony Mason,
F Dale Ellis, G Ricky Davis.

Outlook -- Brown and Derrick Coleman will reprise a front line from their Nets days, and Mashburn may play more shooting guard than small forward. If Hawkins has enough left in his jumper and Eddie Robinson and Baron Davis keep maturing, Charlotte will make it out of the first round.

                            INDIANA PACERS

Last season -- 56-26. Three straight conference finals appearances.

                            Additions
                            C Jermaine O'Neal, C Terry Mills.

                            Key losses
                            C Rik Smits,
                            F Dale Davis,
                            G Mark Jackson,
                            F Chris Mullin.

Outlook -- Don't discount the drive and passion of Reggie Miller, who at 35 still wants the ball with the season in the balance. Whether someone can deliver it to him as timely as did Jackson is another story. Miller, Jalen Rose and Austin Croshere are solid veterans, but after that Indiana pins its hopes on a kiddie corps: O'Neal, Jonathan Bender and Al Harrington. Smits is retired and Dale Davis is in Portland. Luckily, for Coach Isiah Thomas who takes over for Larry Bird, Conseco Fieldhouse is already sold out for the season.

                            DETROIT PISTONS

Last season -- 42-40. Swept in the first round by Miami.

                            Additions
F Ben Wallace, G Chucky Atkins,
F Cedric Ceballos, F John Wallace, F Billy Owens,
                            G Mateen Cleaves.

                            Key losses
F Grant Hill, F Christian Laettner, C Terry Mills, G Lindsey Hunter, G John Crotty.

Outlook -- Jerry Stackhouse is now a permanent go-to guy. Although Hill went to Orlando and Laettner moved to Dallas, Atkins, Ceballos and Wallace give Detroit a more up-tempo, seat-of-the-pants look. Like most teams in the East, the Pistons don't need a bona fide All-Star center to win. If they only played defense, they could make a playoff push.

                            ATLANTA HAWKS

Last season -- 28-54. Looking back, getting rid of Steve Smith made no sense.

                            Additions
G DerMarr Johnson, G Anthony Johnson,
                            F Hanno Mottola.

                            Key losses
F LaPhonso Ellis, G Bimbo Coles.

Outlook -- Most coaches didn't want this job. Lon Kruger takes over a tough situation. Unless the Hawks surprise early, Dikembe Mutombo is essentially trade bait, the missing link for a playoff team. Atlanta is not reloading; it is clearly reconstructing.

                            CHICAGO BULLS

Last season -- 17-65. Since Michael Jordan hit his shot in Utah, the Bulls are 30-102.

                            Additions
G Ron Mercer, C Brad Miller, G Bryce Drew, F Marcus Fizer, G Jamal Crawford, F Dragan Tarlac,
                            G A.J. Guyton, C Jake Voskuhl.

                            Key losses
C Chris Anstey, G Hersey Hawkins,
G Matt Maloney, G Randy Brown, C Will Perdue.

Outlook -- Elton Brand has help. Mercer, a late free-agent acquisition after every big-name player told Jerry Krause no, should blossom. The rookies Fizer and Crawford can play. The Bulls have salary-cap money for next summer. The bad news? This is the year the heretofore patient fans revolt, and the United Center becomes vacant.

                            CLEVELAND CAVALIERS

Last season -- 32-50. Zydrunas Ilgauskas has played only five games in two years.

                            Additions
F Clarence Weatherspoon, F Chris Gatling,
                            F J.R. Reid, F Robert Traylor, C Chris Mihm,
G Bimbo Coles, F Matt Harpring.

                            Key losses
F Shawn Kemp, C Andrew DeClercq,
G Bob Sura, F Danny Ferry.

Outlook -- They finally got rid of Kemp and his inflated contract, but they hardly got equal value. Randy Wittman has another tough assignment. If Ilgauskas, the 7-foot-3-inch Lithuanian center, can have an injury-free year, Cleveland could be in decent shape. But the Cavaliers are not good enough to escape the lottery.
