It's gotta be our year Eventually: Bobcats Association

The 2012-13 season was another disappointing one for the Bobcats as they finished 21-61. The Heat's "Big 3" went on to repeat as NBA Champions. Meanwhile the Bobcats were left wondering if 3 of the players on their team could even be serviceable NBA players. Of course some of their younger players showed promise but 21-61 is a telling number. Should Michael Jordan have stuck to playing? I present to you a great challenge: Bringing the city of Charlotte an NBA Championship.

        Bobcats Net 3rd Pick

The draft lottery has been completed and the Charlotte Bobcats have landed the 3rd pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. The 1st pick went to the Hornets and the 2nd to the Blazers. Now the fun part is guessing who the Bobcats will select.

        Bobcats Prospect Watch

Roger Fox, SG , Miami - A player often compared to Kobe Bryant put up 26.1 PPG as a freshman while leading The U into March Madness almost single handedly. The Bobcats will jump all over on him if we is still available at #3.

Mason Sweetney, SF, Kentucky - Sweetney is an interesting prospect. After a solid freshman year him and coach John Calipari had a heated disputed over Sweetney transitioning to the pros. He came back for another year and had improved his stats averaging 20.8 PPG. Scouts are concerned over his attitude problems and a low ceiling.

Kenny Caballero, PG, Duke - Caballero is known for his reckless abandon of play. He is an explosive athlete often compared to Derrick Rose. The one knock on him is his injury problems. he missed nearly half of last year with nagging injuries

Mike Fordham, SG, Indiana - Maybe one of the less risky picks in the draft. Fordham averaged 6.8 APG his Junior year. To go along with his amazing passing abilities, Fordham has a consistent jumper and is a great free throw shooter. The only knocks on him are his lack of ball handling and his speed.

Hawkeem Freeman, SG, Kansas - A freshman leaving college fresh off of a National Championship, Hawkeem Freeman possess the leaping ability that might be greater than Vince Carter. He is a great attacker and finisher but is often time too aggressive and gets called for charges. He also needs to develop a more consistent jumper to go along with his vicious high-flying dunks.

          Dunlap Out, Corbin In

The Babcats have not renewed head coach Mike Dunlap's contract and have now hired Tyrone Corbin (pictured above) to coach the team. His deal is for 2 years and 6 million. The Bobcats have also renewed assistant coach Stephen Silas' deal to a 2 year, 1 million dollar deal.

              Gordon Declines Option

In an interesting turn of events Ben Gordon turned down his player option for the 2013-2014 season. Had Gordon accepted the option he would've been payed 13.2 million dollars the upcoming season. The Bobcats now have a lot of cap space to work with and can be flexible in free agency. The team is unexpected to resign Gordon. The team also picked up the options for Kemba Walker and Bismack Biyombo. The team hopes that they can be an important part of the team for years to come.

              Notable Options Declined

              Andre Iguodala, Player Option, Nuggets
              J.R. Smith, Player Option, Knicks
              Vince Carter, Team Option, Mavericks

              Ishmael Smith, Player Option, Bucks
              Brandon Rush, Player Option, Warriors
              Robin Lopez, Team Option, Hornets

Report: Bobcats could deal No. 3 overall draft pick for Chris Bosh
By Zach Harper | NBA writer
                June 9, 2013 9:43 am MT

Could Chris Bosh find himself as the top player on a bad team again? (USATSI)

The Charlotte Bobcats are deep into their rebuilding process right now. After having the worst season in NBA history in 2011-12, they made some progress in 2012-13 with 21 wins. Their core currently includes 19-year old Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (second pick in the 2012 draft), 23-year old Kemba Walker, and the big man duo of Bismack Biyombo (20 years old) and Byron Mullens (24 years old). The Bobcats could really use a big splash in free agency with their cap space to bring in some veterans.

Even if the Bobcats can't manage to attract a big-name free agent this summer, they can target expensive veterans via a trade with all of their cap flexibility. In a draft that isn't considered to be very top-heavy, the Bobcats are reportedly looking to move their pick (No. 4 overall) to bring in a veteran player. Could that player be Miami Heat big man Chris Bosh? The Boston Globe is reporting Bosh could be a prime candidate:

The Charlotte Bobcats are looking to make a splash this summer and are open to trading their first-round pick in a package for an All-Star-caliber player. There are rumors the Heat will be looking to deal Chris Bosh, and the Bobcats, who are under the salary cap and could accept Bosh's near-maximum deal, could be a prime candidate.
                (Via HoopsHype)

I'm not really sure why the Heat would be thinking about trading Chris Bosh while they're in the middle of the NBA Finals, and once the Finals are over, they could be sitting on back-to-back championships if they find a way to beat the San Antonio Spurs four times. If that's the case, it doesn't seem likely they'd break up a core that has the potential to three-peat the following season.

But if they are targeting big name, high-priced veterans like this report indicates, you can see Rich Cho and Michael Jordan are serious about galvanizing this rebuilding process. A lot of teams sit around and continue to stockpile young players, hoping to either flip them for a veteran down the road or hit a homerun with the development of that young player like the Oklahoma City Thunder plan has shown. The Bobcats giving up potential in order to have more substance on their roster is a good thing.

They just have to target the right veterans to mix with their young guys as they attempt to return to the playoffs.

                    Bobcats Prospect Watch: Part II

Bryce Cole, PF, Michigan - Coming off of his junior season at Michigan Cole is known as a scrapper. He has a nose for the ball and averaged 8.2 RPG last year. He needs to work on his passing abilities and screen setting.

Tiajo Jacobsen, PF, Ohio State - An absolute monster on the boards, Jacobsen is a great defensive player who is very raw. If he develops a post game he can get scary good.

Ramon Uwawah, C, Kansas - A stud on the boards and defensive. He averaged 3.1 BPG his junior year. Unfortunately he is basically useless on offense.

Dante Cage, SF, Syracuse - One of the fastest guys around, Cage has quick hands and plays the passing lanes well. He can throw down a monstrous dunk at any time. He needs to get stronger and become a better finisher and ball distributor.

Dennis Lambert, C, Georgia Tech - Lambert is a great player in the low post, on offense at least. Needs to get leaner and improve his defense. At the offensive end he is as solid of a low post player you could ask for, averaging 16.3 PPG his senior year.

Report: Bobcats trying to trade 3rd Pick

There have been numerous reports that the Charlotte Bobcats are shopping the 3rd pick in this year's NBA Draft. The Bobcats have discussed trades for Danny Granger, Eric Gordon, Rajon Rondo, Chris Bosh, and O.J. Mayo. GM Rich Cho is quoted as saying,"Besides that kid from Miami, we don't really think there are any bona-fide superstars in the making that will be available for us to draft. Well, there is this one other kid, well nevermind about that. We would like to make a splash by trading for a big name guy. We just don't want to pay a guy top 3 money when in a different draft class he wouldn't get top 10 money." It is unclear if Michael Jordan is on board with this big trade idea.

The Bobcats have traded the 3rd pick in the 2013 NBA Draft to the Indiana Pacers for small forward Danny Granger. Granger only played in 5 games last year due to a knee injury but is a career 18.1 PPG scorer. He has one year and 14.02 million dollars left on his deal. It is unknown whether Granger and the team are discussing an extension at the moment.

"The Bobcats have been rumored to been looking to trade for a star player. What are your thought on the Danny Granger trade."

Skip Bayless: Oh it's a terrible trade. Why would you trade the #3 draft pick in such a deep draft for a player who gets paid too much and has hurt all of last season? They could've drafted Sweetney, Caballero, or Fordham.

Stephen A. Smith: Did you hear Cho said,"Besides that kid from Miami, we don't really think there are any bona-fide superstars in the making that will be available for us to draft. Well, there is this one other kid, well nevermind about that."?

Skip: Yeah I did and I think he's talking about Dennis Lambert, the kid from Georgia Tech. Reminds me of Karl Malone. he has a great low post game.

Stephen: Ehhhh... I think they'll take that mo hawked kid, Cage out of Syracuse.

Skip: Well not now cuz bye bye draft pick.

Stephen: I actually like the trade for the Bobcats . Granger's contract expires after this season and they'll have a ton of cap room. They could go after some big name free agents.

Skip: Why not go after big name free agents this year? They have plenty of cap space now. I'm just saying why would you get one guaranteed year out of Granger when you could've drafted someone and got four guaranteed years out of them?

Stephen: Well I think Michael Jordan and Rich Cho are trying to make a splash, make the headlines. Well congrats, you guys did it.
