Coach Anderson: Alright Tigers, today is the JV first offcial team practice so clap it up. We're going to have a tremendous season growing as friends but also as a dominate basketball team.

Today I want us to make are main vocal point our playbook and communication on the floor. We've got our first game in a matter of just a in just a few days so we've gotta really hustle in these practices and we've got to give it are all.

      Practice Planning Schedule
      • Defensive Close Outs
      • Pressuring Shooters *
      • Spacing The Floor *

Alright I liked that work we put in. Great effort and ambition seen out there. We're going to cap this practice off with a 4 on 4 scrimmage. I want to see you guys showcase the majority of the work you just showed as they leads to victories.. So let's get this started, one left basket is as follows Stone, Eury, Cole, Christian, Dontae you guys will have to have a subsitution and on the right basket let's get Jerry, Omari, Jeremy, and Adrian.

Dontae': Coach, Adrian is 6'4. Can this get any easier? Yo Stone, your running point? Dump it inside.

Coach Anderson: I'm not liking that sense of arrogancy Dontae'. This is TEAM basketball therefore you will play like a TEAM member. I don't care if you're ranked or not, nobody is getting star attention on this team as long as I'm coaching here.

Restoring the Fear: A Belltown Tigers Legacy

*Brandon immediately after school, while JV is practicing*

Brandon walks down the crowded hallway. It was frantic, school had just left out after all. JV had practice in the main gym, so that eliminated that gym for him to use. Brandon scrambles around in what feels like a foreign place for him. It feels like hours, but eventually Brandon stumbles onto an auxiliary gym. He looks around for a second and then enters the doors.

The gym is empty, a little dusty as well. It appears it really hasn't been used or paid attention to in some time.

"This'll do," he muttered to himself. Brandon closed the door and unzipped the blue Reebok bookbag over his shoulder, and snagged the basketball out of it. Brandon looks around again and quickly changes into basketball shorts and a t-shirt. He begins running back and forth, first from the baseline to the top of the key, then back. Then to half court and back, then from baseline to baseline. He huffs for air, and hunches over quickly to catch his breath.

He grabs the ball from the ground and dribbles it to just under the basket. Brandon starts shooting bank shots from both sides of the basket, after making a bunch he moves back a little bit. This continues for 10 minutes until he's taking three point shots. Brandon stops for a second after getting to the three point line and runs back to his backpack for something. Brandon pulls cones from his bag, and sets them up inside the key.

"I'm not explosive enough to make an impact at guard in this league...I need to work 100 times harder than everyone else to get there," he says to himself. "I know I can get better, athleticism can't be taught but it can be improved through hard work."

Brandon takes the ball and starts quickly changing directions and dribbling through the cones. As this is happening, Brandon's working on laying the ball in off a hard dribble. The ball won't fall at first, no matter how hard he tried he just couldn't get the ball to fall off his hard dribbles. The frustration built, but it quickly turned to disappointment. "Why can't I make it fall? Damnit!" He slams his hands on the ground in frustration, then calms a bit.

"I can't get down on myself like that. I'm a damn good player and all I need to do is put in more work. I'll get it if I try hard enough." Brandon picks up the ball and looks at it, then the basket, then himself again. He dribbles towards the first cone, crosses over the first cone and quickly shifts direction through the second one. He spins and lays the ball up off the left side of the glass with his right hand. The ball bounces off the glass and sinks through the hoop. Brandon smirks as the ball bounces slower and slower underneath the basket.

                Coaching Staff Chatter

Coach Anderson: Christian Carter, that kid does a great job using his athleticsm to get those rebounds.
Assistant Plath: Definitley but he doesn't look for his own shot on offense. On the other hand Dontae' Brown is doninanting as planned. We're obviously going to start these two correct?
Coach Anderson: Don't ask dumb question Archie.
Assistant Plath: ... But what I'm wondering is what in the hell we're going to do at the guard positions. We have a lot of talented depth at the positions.
Coach Anderson: Uhm well Jerry is definitley the best passer we've got but he makes too many mistakes on offense and doesn't make the right plays. On the other hand we've got Stone, he can burry the jumper, is quite athletic, but unlike Jerry, he isn't a great all handler and passer.
Assistant Plath: Tough sitution, what about Eury? Ever think of him at guard?
Coach Anderson: No, no, no, no. He's an isolation player that will always look for his own shot before finding a teammate. You know what? I'm thinking this would be a great lineup; Jerry, Jeremy, Cole, Christian, then Dontae'. This gives us legitimate height and we're playing at the JV level. That is an contender of an undefeated season right there.
Assistant Plath: Sounds pretty good to me. Have Eury making plays off the bench as a sixth man? Not many bench players will be able to guard him.
Coach Anderson: Exactly, I think we've got a plan.
Assistant Plath: Alright then. Wait, wait, wait. You know about that Adrian Hines guy correct?
Coach Anderson: Yes of course, just realized he was missing today.
Assistant Plath: ... How do you plan to utilize him?
Coach Anderson: Well I don't know. I don't know anything about his game besides his height. Will have to see next practice if he shows up.

Coach Anderson: Alright bring it in everybody. I saw great things in those scrimmages and I think we're ready to take JV by storm.
Only flaw I keep seeing is transititon defense, you guys cannot allow the team to take advantage because we're being lazy and allowing our opponents to run the floor. You've gotta run with them, keep up...
But besides that we're doing great and it's gonna hopefully carry into the season!

Brandon: Stone, what's all this about coach not liking your game? I think he sees the parts you've gotta improve on, you are a freshman after all...got a couple years to get better. Show coach you mean business. Put in the work man. Your time will come.

Anyways, those flaws he mentioned, just happen to be things I'm pretty good at. If you want, I can help you work on them outside of practice.

Yeah you're probably right, it's just tough cause I've always been the best player on my teams and now I'm not! I would love your help after practice man and I can help you as well, get that three point shot locked down so you will be a star on varsity, thanks for the talk!

Belltown Tigers vs Detroit Country Day Yellow Jackets

                            Locker Room Discussion
Coach Anderson: Alright guys this is it, what we've been looking forward to, our season debut. We're at the school of the 2013 regining state champions of Detroit. But luckily this is only their JV team. We're a great basketball team and we're gonna go out there and show these guys.
I want the main focus of the game on offense is ball distribution. I want us to really get the ball in the paint as much as possible and use our size as our key advantage. On defense we'll play zone... I've heard this team doesn't have a great deal of shooters so they shall work out perfectly.
And we've disscused the rotations; Jerry at point, Jeremy at the 2, Cole at the 3, and Christian and Dontae down low.

Assistant Plath: Yes like Coach Anderson said, distribution is key. We're also going to focus on closing out shooters in this zone defense. That is critically important but we've got the length to achieve. AND CRASH THE OFFENSIVE GLASS! Don't rely on Dontae' to be the rebounder, it's got to be a team effort on those boards. But yes I am expecting big rebounding numbers from you Dontae'.

                            Coach Anderson: Alright we're ready!
