Last Two Meetings
1/2: at UMKC - W - 59-57
2/9: vs UMKC - W - 74-58
There were a lot of storylines coming into this game. Most notably UMKC upsetting North Dakota State who was the hands down favorite to win the Summit League. Southern Utah had never beaten North Dakota State. The Thunderbirds have won 9 of the last 13 games and freshman F A.J. Hess is averaging 30.5 PPG and 7 RPG in the conference tournament. The message for both teams was the same: Win and in.
UMKC would jump out to an early 5-0 lead but Southern Utah would control most of the half from that point. UMKC would recapture the lead with 1:00 left and strut into the locker room up 28-27.
The big story of the first half was the Thunderbirds inability to score. Most notably A.J. Hess who struggled in the first half. Jordan Johnson lead Southern Utah with 11 points (4/9 FG, 3/5 3pt). Southern Utah shot just 32% (4/13 3pt) and only scored 8 points in the paint. UMKC had 4 points in the paint but shot 44% (5/13 3pt). They were led by Kirk Korver with 10 points (4/8 FG, 2/5 3pt). For those wondering, Korver and A.J. Hess match up as they both play the same position.
The second half would be a continual struggle for Southern Utah - especially A.J. Hess who couldn't find his shot in the second half either. UMKC, on the other hand, shot much better in the second half and no matter what Southern Utah threw at them defensively they out played them. It was a sad way for the Southern Utah seniors to go out.
