Wow both BSU and Gonzaga go down in Round 1

Looks like you added some nice size in recruiting. I expect Willis will be a go to player for you next season..

Southern Utah Thunderbirds @ #3 Kansas Jayhawks

Vegas had Kansas favored by 20 points coming into this game. With in two minutes Southern Utah lost forward J. Willis and center J. Cheeseman to foul trouble (two each). That's when things got weird.

Freshman forward Steven Laksa would completely takeover offensively and Kansas wouldn't be able to hit a shot. With 1:15 remaining until halftime Southern Utah led 38-22. Allen Fieldhouse was dead silent. Kansas would be able to close the game a bit, but Southern Utah still led at the break 38-26.

Kansas would shoot 33% from the field (1/3 from 3pt), 9/13 from the charity stripe and only get 10 points in the paint. Southern Utah, on the other hand, shot 51% from the field (3/7 3pt), 3/8 from the charity stripe but had 24 points in the paint. The player of the half was hands down Steven Laksa: 20 points (9/13 FG), six rebounds and two blocks.

If you thought the second half wouldn't get any weirder - you were wrong. Kansas would storm back in the second half. They'd cut it to 46-44 (So. Utah lead) with 10:20 left. Three minutes later Kansas would capture the lead 54-53. After Kansas hit an and 1 to go up 63-60, sophomore A.J. Hess would drain a three to tie it with 4:30 left. Kansas would regain a two point lead but see it fade to a 68-67, Southern Utah lead. Kansas would once again capture the lead 71-68 with 1:15 left. They had all the momentum in the world and looked poised to avoid the upset. Southern Utah wouldn't go away. A.J. Hess would drill another three with 41.4 seconds left to tie it 73-73.

Kansas' Naadir Tharpe had completely taken over all second half and got help late from FR G Romas Sterley - who drilled a three pointer to put Kansas up 76-73 with 14.8 seconds left. Kansas had been turning Southern Utah over all second half, and knocked the ball out of bounds. A.J. Hess would then miss a three pointer but Southern Utah would grab the rebound. Southern Utah would take a timeout with 2.3 seconds left. Coach Haas' would draw up a play during the timeout and only hope his team could execute in such a tough environment and situation.

The ball would be in bounded to A.J. Hess who would pull up and drain a three to tie it 76-76 with 0.7 seconds left. Allen Fieldhouse would once again get dead silent with a bunch of shocked looks on everyone's face. Kansas would fail to do anything with only 0.7 seconds left and the game would go into overtime.

Kansas would start overtime dominating going up 84-76. A.J. Hess would drain a three, Kansas would get an easy bucket after breaking the Thunderbirds' trap, but Hess would once again drain another three pointer. Southern Utah would steal the ball and Hess would get a lay up to make it 86-84, Kansas, with 42.0 seconds left. Kansas would get another basket to extend their lead to four, but A.J. Hess would hit yet another three pointer. 88-87, Kansas, with 16.7 seconds left. Steven Laksa would be fouled by Joel Embiid with 2.6 seconds left. Southern Utah down 91-89. He would unfortunately go 0/2 BUT, Cal Hanks would grab the offensive board and get the putback to tie it 91-91 with 0.6 seconds left. Once again, Allen Fieldhouse was dead silent. Astonished looks all across the fanbase.

Luckily for Kansas fans they would dominate the second overtime enroute to a much unexpected, hard fought victory.

                        Southern Utah: 98
                        Kansas: 108

Interesting tidbit: Boise State is now 1-0 on the year after a 72-66 victory over Longwood. I mention this because their SF is the leading scorer in the country..

                            NIT Season Tip-Off

                            Southern Utah (0-1) @ Texas A&M (0-1)

Coming off a double overtime loss at Kansas, Southern Utah was booming with confidence. They played like it as well. That was until the 7:10 mark when Steven Laksa got his second foul. The Thunderbirds were down just 22-18 at the time. They would be outscored 20-5 the rest of the half and trail 42-23.

Texas A&M shot 54% from the field (1/2 3pt) and a whopping 15/18 from the FT line in just the first half. They also controlled the paint outscoring the Thunderbirds 20-12. Southern Utah shot an abysmal 25% from the field (0/8 3pt) and just 9/17 from the charity stripe. Steven Laksa had 11 points (4/7 FG) and five rebounds. For the Agggies J-Mychal Reese had 15 points (5/7 FG, 1/1 3pt)

The second half would provide no epic comeback. Albeit, Southern Utah would play better in the second half - the Aggies would shoot better in the second half than they did in the first en route to an easy win.

                            Southern Utah: 55
                            Texas A&M: 81

Wow. Incredible game against Kansas, a real shame you couldn't pull out a victory, although you never really had a shot to win it there at the end of regulation or OT. Expected let-down against A&M after such a tough loss.

You have a young team, you thinking NCAA bid this year?

                                NIT Season Tip-Off

Southern Utah (0-2) vs Southern Miss (1-1)

Southern Miss started the game off knocking down back to back threes to go up 6-0. Southern Utah would respond with a 13-0 run and control the rest of the half and lead 37-32 at halftime. A big reason for the lead was the distinct height advantage Southern Utah possessed. They'd out rebound Southern Miss 25-14 (11-3 offensive rebound advantage) in the first half alone. Southern Utah shot 40% from the field (1/7 3pt) but did go 8/13 from the charity stripe. Southern Miss shot 48% from the field (3/8 from 3pt) but only 3/9 from the free throw line. Thunderbirds' Cal Hanks had 11 points (5/6 FG) and five boards to lead all scorers. Southern Miss was lead by Thaddeus Hall with nine points (4/8 FG, 1/2 3pt) and three rebounds.

For about half of the second half Southern Utah would take surprising control. They wouldn't blow the door open, but they wouldn't let Southern Miss get it to one possession. Southern Utah would go up 54-44, but Southern Miss would cut it to a six point game. Thunderbirds would extend it to 61-52 but with 1:15 left Southern Miss would tie it 68-68.

Steven laksa would get a bucket to put his team up two but Southern MIss would tie it again with 33.5 left. Laksa would then be fouled with 9.3 seconds to go. He'd step to the free throw line, where has had severely struggled this year, and he would miss both. However, J. Willis would grab the board and get the put back. Thaddeus Hall would get a decent look at three but fail to convert.

                                Southern Utah: 72
                                Southern Miss: 70
