Who's To Blame In Powell/Paul Saga?

News broke early on February 26th that the Los Angeles Clippers had fired their long-time athletic trainer, Jasen Powell, due to his mistake in diagnosing Chris Paul with an ankle injury.

It seems a major overreaction by a franchise that has seen its fair share of turbulence in the past years. Powell was a longtime member of the organization, with this 2014-15 season his 14th with Los Angeles. He was the Eastern Conference All Star team's trainer in the 2004 All Star game. Powell is a big force in the National Basketball (Association) Trainers' Association. So why did the Western Conference's #1 team let him go?

The Clippers have had their normal allotment of bumps, bruises, and sprains. One injury stands out—the loss of Spencer Hawes for 9 games with a bruised knee. Since his return, the Clippers have gone 16-9 and vaulted their way to the top of the West. 9 games seemed to be the proper amount of time missed, and Hawes was clearly rested and performed well in his return to the line-up. Yet there was a rumour—a possibility perhaps first postulated by Powell himself, was that Hawes would miss the year.

Paul played 42 minutes in a 107-93 loss to the surging Houston Rockets, scoring 18 points and handing out a game-high 13 assists, but the star point guard did turn the ball over a ghastly 7 times. With 5 minutes to play, he landed hard after making a 3-pointer to close the gap to 5, but then looked slow and staggered through the rest of the game, which he played out. Paul went to the locker room quickly and the Clippers feared the worst.

And on February 25, a Clippers off day, they heard it. Powell gave the team an initial diagnosis of a broken ankle for the team's most important player, meaning Paul would miss 4-8 weeks and likely a quick playoff exit. The Clippers were silently devastated, searching for a possible replacement, but waited for a confirmatory MRI to announce Paul's injury to the media. The confirmation never came; doctors from UCLA Orthopaedic Surgery, in Los Angeles, and the all-important MRI, showed that Paul did not have a broken ankle, merely a twist, and that he would not need to miss any time.

The next day, the Clippers fired Powell.

Who's to blame? Is it Chris Paul, for not recognizing that his injury wasn't that serious? Is it the clear scapegoat Powell, who deleteriously energized the entire organization? Or was it the Clippers themselves, for taking things at face value and not admitting to a mistake?

Mistakes happen, and bad mistakes happen too. This was a bad one, but Powell should be picked up soon by another team. Paul will continue to play and lead the Clippers, life goes on. It will merely go on with a new face, not a 14-year familiar face, in the Los Angeles Clippers' dressing room.

Cavaliers Big 3 All Post Double-Doubles In Win
Kevin Love scored 33 points and chipped in a game-high 14 rebounds despite the dark clouds circling around him due to questions about Love's decision vis à vis his player option, in the Cavaliers' 111-109 win over the Golden State Warriors. Kyrie Irving scored 32 and dished out 12 assists and LeBron James put up 18 and hauled in 13 rebounds in a night where he relinquished the spotlight. David Lee led the Warriors with 19 points, Steph Curry scored 17 and Klay Thompson matched Curry exactly as Thompson continues his path back from a broken ankle. The Warriors surrendered 48 fouls, and the Cavs capitalized by way of 37 points off Golden State's 34 fouls.

Durant Scores 41 As Thunder Crush Suns
Oklahoma road a 34-23 third-quarter to a 120-105 win over the Phoenix Suns, but more so road the coattails of Kevin Durant and his 41 points and 7 rebounds to get the W. Russell Westbrook also added 27 points and 7 assists, and backcourt mate Reggie Jackson scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Steven Adams also hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds for the Thunder. Markieff Morris scored 17 points and notched 12 rebounds for the Suns in their loss.

You Can Call Him Mr. Superbeard; Timberwolves Shoot Lights Out To Top Bulls; Grizzlies Best Brick-Shooting Clippers; Postgame Interview With Andrew Wiggins

You Can Call Him Mr. Superbeard
James Harden scored 39 points and added 5 assists in what was just the latest in a string of superior performances by the big-bearded Rocket. Houston also got 25 points and 14 rebounds from Dwight Howard, but the Rockets only had 1 other play score in double-digits (Jason Terry, who had 10 points) and as a consequence fell to the Brooklyn Nets 117-106. Deron Williams had 23 points and 12 assists, and Joe Johnson (23) and Jarrett Jack (21) added 20+ points apiece for Brooklyn.

Timberwolves Shoot Lights Out To Top Bulls
The Minnesota Timberwolves shot 58% (45-78) from the field as a whole and 10-22 from long range en route to a 120-108 win over the Chicago Bulls. Minnesota had 7 players score 10 or more points, with Kevin Martin leading the way with 17 and Troy Daniels and Andrew Wiggins close behind with 15 points apiece. Nikola Pekovic also added 13 points and 10 rebounds in the win. For the Bulls, Derrick Rose scored 21 points and dished out 8 assists but turned the ball over 7 times, and Doug McDermott added 16 points. The Timberwolves' win was spearheaded by jumping out to a 37-20 lead after the first quarter.

              Grizzlies Best Brick-Shooting Clippers
Memphis beat Los Angeles 100-83 in a gritty game. Marc Gasol scored 12 points and was a major force on the boards all night, eating glass for a meal of 19 rebounds, leading all players. He added 3 steals as well. Mike Conley led all players with 20 points and 7 assists. Blake Griffin record a double-double for the Clippers with 18 points and 11 boards, and DeAndre Jordan had 14 rebounds, but the points were few and far between for Los Angeles as they shot a mere 42% (32/77) from the field but an absolutely paltry 27% (6/22) from beyond the 3-point line.

              Postgame Interview With Andrew Wiggins
Andrew Wiggins scored 15 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, and recorded 4 blocks in Minnesota's 120-108 win over the Bulls.
Q: You played, and beat Derrick Rose tonight. How did it feel?
A: It's always nice to get a win, and always just a little more so when you beat a player like Rose.

Q: 3 blocks in pretty impressive, what led you to that?
A: I was in the right position and I got my hand on the ball, that's how a block works and I had that combo 3 times.

Q: How do you keep focus in a season where playoffs aren't in the question—not this specific question, of course—?
A: For me it's a learning experience, so I try to learn something new each game.

Bo-ris Knows Scoring; Knicks Can't Find The Hoop Or The Ball; Thornton Gets New Deal; Postgame Interview With Andrea Barngani

                  Bo-ris Knows Scoring
Boris Diaw led the San Antonio Spurs and all scores with 25 points, helping San Antonio to a 106-102 victory over the Phoenix Suns. Diaw shot 9-18 from the field, 3-7 (43%) from deep, and added 6 rebounds to help the cause. Kahwi Leonard scored 17 points and hauled in 7 rebounds, and Danny Green scored 16 for the Spurs. Goran Dragic scored 22 points and dished out a team-high 6 assists in the loss, and Miles Plumlee led all players with 15 rebounds. Isaiah Thomas also scored 20 points for the Suns. The Spurs won this game in the second half, outscoring Phoenix 72-55 in that timeframe.

Knicks Can't Find The Hoop Or The Ball
The New York Knicks fell 98-73 to the Toronto Raptors in yet another disheartening, offensively challenged loss for Phil Jackson's triangle warriors. Andrea Bargnani led the Knicks with 17 points, but didn't record a rebound or an assist. Jose Calderon scored the second-most points for the Knicks, dropping 10 while also putting up 6 assists, but turned the ball over a ghastly 9 times in the loss. The Knicks as a team had an egregious 25 turnovers. DeMar DeRozan led Toronto with 18 points, but Kyle Lowry stole the show with 18 points, 5 boards, 7 assists, and a game-high 6 steals.

                  Thornton Gets New Deal
The Boston Celtics announced that they had signed SG Marcus Thornton to a 3 year, 8.78 million dollar extension. The Celtics said that they wanted a somewhat longterm option to develop and mature alongside Marcus Smart. Thornton will return for the Celtics' upcoming game against the league-leading Cavaliers. He missed time with a dislocated finger.

                  Postgame Interview With Andrea Barngani
Andrea Bargnani scored 17 points and recorded 1 steal and block each in the New York Knicks' 98-73 loss to the Toronto Raptors.
Q: How does it feel, facing your old team?
A: Well, you have to look at it like any other game.

Q: You led the team with 17 points, but you guys struggled collectively on offense. What's wrong?
A: I think tonight was a blip because we turned over the ball very much.

Q: How can you gear up for a playoff push?
A: Have to understand that every game is a little more important than the last one, and play hard as you can.

Three Things We Learned From February
                          1. Scoring Wins Games, Defense Wins Championships
The Houston Rockets are the prime example, boasting the leading scorer in the NBA in James Harden (30.1 PPG) and the most points per game as a team, at 111.1 points. However, the Rockets are 4th in their division at 34-24 and currently slot into the 7th seed, mostly because they allow 107.2 points per game, 2nd in the NBA. By comparison, the Memphis Grizzlies lead the Rockets’ division at 35-23 while only scoring 98.3 points per game. The Grizzlies allow the fewest points per game in the league at 94.2 and have two players (Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph) averaging 9.6 rebounds per game.

                          2. Team Play is Good Play
Of the top 10 teams in the NBA, only two (the Southwest Division-leading Atlanta Hawks and the Oklahoma City Thunder) average fewer than 20 assists per game. And 7 of the top 10 (the aforementioned two and the Memphis Grizzlies) average more than 22 assists per game. The NBA-best Cavaliers lead the league in APG, with 24.8 per game, and the top 8 teams in assists per game are all 10 games or more above .500.

                          3. The East is Weak; The West Is Strong
The Toronto Raptors (35-24) are slotted for the Eastern Conference’s fourth seed. Their presumed opposition is the 4.5 games-worse Miami Heat (30-28). The East’s discrepancy is so large that the third-seed Atlanta Hawks (35-24) aren’t slotted to play a team with a winning record—their matchup would be the 28-28 Charlotte Hornets. On the other side of the spectrum, the Western Conference’s second-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder (36-23) are slotted to play a team that is only 1.5 games behind the Thunder… the heavy-duty 34-24 Houston Rockets.

                          Big 3: Teams
                          1. Cleveland Cavaliers (44-16)—February: 12-1
Cleveland is riding the coattails of their own Big 3. They’re 26-9 in Eastern Conference play and 9-1 in their last 10 games. They’re 6.5 games up on the second-place team in the Eastern Conference (which happens to be the divisional-rival Chicago Bulls) and 5.5 up over the entire NBA. They also score 105.4 points per game and allow 96.8, the best differential in the league. LeBron James leads the race for MVP voting, because a) he’s LeBron, and b) he’s second in the NBA with 26.9 PPG and is also hauling in 7.5 RPG and dishing out 5.7 APG… and leading the league in minutes per game, with 38.6. Kyrie Irving is 7th in the NBA with 21.8 PPG, and is also recording 7 assists per game. Kevin Love is averaging a double-double, putting up 18.9 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. In short, this is the best team in the league and one that nobody will want to face come playoff time.

                          2. Oklahoma City Thunder (36-23)—February: 11-2
Oklahoma City hasn’t lost in two weeks and their wins haven’t exactly been nail-biters. The Thunder are consistently doing what they do best: scoring points and then scoring some more points. OKC is third in the NBA with 106.6 points per game and first in shooting percentage, hitting at a clip of .488. Kevin Durant leads the team in both points per game (28.4) and rebounds per game (8.3), but Russell Westbrook has arguably been better, carrying the team recently and scoring 26.7 PPG, grabbing 6.7 RPG, and dishing out a team-high 8.8 APG. Guard Reggie Jackson has also stepped up big-time, and with 18.7 points and 5.0 assists per game, the Thunder may have found their long-term replacement for James Harden.

                          3. Los Angeles Clippers (38-21)—February: 6-7
Los Angeles has slipped lately, going 6-7 in February, but despite the repercussions of the Chris Paul ankle saga the Clippers are still in first place in the Western Conference. Paul, with 10.5 assists, is averaging nearly 2 more assists than the nearest player, and Los Angeles’ superstar point guard is also putting up 18.9 points per game and leading the league with 2.3 steals per game. The Clippers allow the third-fewest points per game at 96.3 and also score 103.7 per game. They also shoot for the fourth-highest percentage in the NBA, at a mark of .469. Blake Griffin leads the team with 21.4 PPG and also grabs 8.5 RPG. DeAndre Jordan leads the Clippers with 10.2 RPG and 1.7 BPG. 6th man Jamal Crawford is in a tight race with Isaiah Thomas for the 6th man of the year award; Crawford is averaging 17.6 points per game.

                          The Case For…
                          Kyle Lowry
Lowry has been the major force for the Raptors this year, leading them to a probable third or fourth seed in the Eastern Conference on the strength of a 35-24 record. The Raptors lead the Atlantic Division by 5.5 games, going 9-2 in the division itself, and Lowry is a major reason. He scores 17.2 points per game, second on the Raptors only to DeMar DeRozan, who scores 17.3. Lowry also hauls in 6.4 rebounds per game, including 1.6 on offense, which is second only to Jonas Valanciunas. Lowry leads the team and is third in the NBA in assists, at a clip of 8.5 per game. He leads Toronto in yet another category, steals per game, with 2 in that category. He’s played consistently, healthily, and he provides the Raptors with a major spark each time he steps onto the court. A 35-24 Toronto team, which features Lowry and his 8.5 APG, is the case for Kyle Lowry.

                                Around The NBA—3/1/15

Gibson's Double-Double Helps Bulls Best Clippers; No Love For Rockets; 76ers Hold Pacers To Dismal 59 Points; Westbrook Carries Thunder To Victory

Gibson's Double-Double Helps Bulls Best Clippers
Taj Gibson scored 13 points and led all players with 14 rebounds as the Chicago Bulls overcame a 53-47 deficit at halftime to beat the Los Angeles Clippers 98-94. Jimmy Butler led the Bulls with 20 points, adding 6 assists and 3 steals, and Derrick Rose tallied 15 points and 5 assists in the win. Chris Paul scored 20 points and dished out 12 assists, but turned over the ball a ridiculous 13 times. Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan both had double-doubles, with Griffin recording 16 points and 12 rebounds while Jordan scored 10 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. A large portion of Bulls' points came on free throws (26/31) as the Clippers recorded 21 team fouls.

                                No Love For Rockets
The Cleveland Cavaliers roared back and outscored the Houston Rockets 31-18 in the final quarter to record their 45th win, 109-101. Kevin Love's double-double (19 points, 14 rebounds) was a key factor, as was LeBron James' 27 points, 5 boards, and a game-high 8 assists. Kyrie Irving also chipped in 212 points and 5 assists, and Tristan Thompson grabbed 13 boards and 3 steals. Dwight Howard had a monster double-double for Houston, scoring 21 points and hauling in 17 rebounds. James Harden scored 27 points in the loss.

76ers Hold Pacers To Dismal 59 Points
The Philadelphia 76ers scored all of 6 points in the 4th quarter, but still walked away with a double-digit defeat of the horrid Pacers, 73-59. Philadelphia scored 27 points in the first quarter, which would have been enough for a lead at halftime had they scored 0 points in the 2nd quarter (as it was, they led 42-24 at the half). Jason Richardson led all scorers with 16 points, and Michael Carter-Williams scored 14 points, grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds, and dished out 5 assists. The two teams combined for a mere 23 assists. The Pacers were "led" by George Hill with 13 points, while David West hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds. The Pacers took 57 shots, two fewer shots than they had points.

                                Westbrook Carries Thunder To Victory
Russell Westbrook demanded, hunted for, and melded with the ball en route to an incredible triple-double in the Thunder's 121-108 win over the Los Angeles Lakers. Westbrook led all scorers with 36 points, all rebounders with 15, and all passers with 12 assists, topping it all off with 3 steals. Serge Ibaka provided the secondary scoring, putting up 32 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Kevin Durant scored a mere 10 points, while hauling down 7 rebounds and recording 7 assists. Kobe Bryant scored 21 points and led the Lakers with 8 assists in the Lakers' 43rd loss of the season.
